Jeremy Maclin Is Thinking Big For Birds Young Talented Offense

DeSean Jackson wasn’t at today’s Eagles OTA and it seemed that the Eagles other starting wide receiver Jeremy Maclin must have caught a thousand balls.¬† Quarterback Kevin Kolb got into a rhythm and he and Maclin were hooking up all practice long.

Kolb was connected with him on come back routes, crossing routes, out routes, go routes and double move routes.  They seemed to be at their best on the intermediate routes.  All this intermediate stuff could make Maclin the most thrown to receiver on the football team.

I don’t know how Jackson would react to that but he may not have a choice, if the Eagles adjust their offense to the strengths of their quarterback. The fact that the speedy Jackson is pursuing a new contract could make things very interesting.

I think Kolb can throw the deep ball but he might focus more on getting the ball out of his hands, so that he takes the shorter throw rather than waiting to see if the deep throw is there.  It could limit some of the deep balls.

Maclin doesn’t look like the same receiver who played for the Birds a year ago.¬† He’s thicker and stronger to the point that I don’t want to see him get much bigger.

After practice he told us, he has put on six pounds of muscle.  This is what I expected from a guy who started his career as a baby-faced twenty-one year old.  This former Missouri Tiger is still growing.

He said his speed is still there, plus his body fat is down and he has no problem carrying the extra weight.

This young man is so confident in himself and his teammates that he’s making some serious boasts.¬† He compared the group they have right now to “The Greatest Show On Turf”.

He believes he and DeSean can perform on the level of what Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce were able to do and Kolb can get the ball to them like Kurt Warner used to do. Maclin grew up in the St. Louis area, so he knows about Holt and Bruce.

Who knows they may wind up being that good, but why not just wait and do it rather than talk about it.  That Rams team won a Super Bowl and lost a close game to the New England Patriots in another.  They were one of the highest scoring teams in the history of the league.

Maclin also compared LeSean McCoy to future Hall Of Famer Marshall Faulk.¬† I don’t see any way that LeSean will ever be the level of runner and receiver that Faulk was, but everybody has their opinion.¬† He could be a great player and still not be as good as Faulk.

We’ll be satisfied if McCoy can duplicate the magic of Brian Westbrook.¬† In fact we’ll be thrilled.

Maclin believes the receivers will rotate having big games and therefore there problably won’t be a clear cut number one receiver.

DRUMMER:
They are young and young players seldom have the wisdom to be CONFIDENT, LOW KEY AND HUMBLE all at once.

Ah… the power of selective reporting… if you go to the team website, there’s a video called ‘building chemistry’ during which Maclin sounds, to use BigE’s words ‘confident, low key, and humble all at once’. Check it out. He says ‘I’m very comfortable, but like I said there’s still a lot to learn… Great players get better every day, and that’s the category I wanna be in, and eventually get in. So I’m just going out there everyday, trying to learn something new and try to perfect it.’ Now, some of you will call this me ‘spinning’ or ‘drinking coolaid’, or ‘working for the team’. It’s on video. I’m just pointing you to it. But tell me that he sounds arrogant and brash. Tell me he doesn’t sound CONFIDENT, LOW KEY and HUMBLE all at once.

Kolb being able to use the intermediate routes should benefit DJax as well. DJax’s 2 longest touchdown receptions last year were from Kolb on 15 and 25 yards passes that had huge run after the catches. Well thrown short to intermediate routes can go for big plays with Maclin and DJax if they don’t have to break stride.

Nothing wrong with confidence or setting the bar high. Sounds to me like he is just talking about what he knows, since he grew up in.

Well once D-Jax holds out and finally gets traded to the Raiders for CB Asamogah,
Then Maclin will become # 1 WR for the Birds…

I don’t under how can comparing this young Eagles offense with The Greatest Show on Turf can be considered humble. If this team had enjoyed some previous success, I could them expecting to build on it. Then, that type of statement would be one of reasonable expectation, but these guys have not played a single season together, and we have an unknown quantity at the most important position on the field. We all hope that Kolb is the next Montana, but our hope is based on very limited information. Realistically, It’s one thing to QB a few games in a season, and another to play a 16-game regular season schedule. Injuries play such a huge role in how players perform in this league. By October-November, everyone is playing injured, and in my opinion, that’s the greatest intangible. By the time December rolls in, you’re not only playing injured, but cold weather comes into play. All the while, the playoffs loom and the NFL greats are taking their game up a notch. Until this team, at the very minimum, plays one season together, I don’t think they should make any comparisons. How do you compare an unknown quantity to a known one?

I personally believe Maclin will eventually be the better receiver. Jackson will probably always be the most explosive receiver but when you take away the deep ball, he’s non-existent in games. Teams will commit more to Jackson and play Maclin 1 on 1 until he proves he can continually hurt them then they have to mix double coverages.

This is the best scenario for Jackson. The success of Maclin will dictate the amount of success Jackson has. If Maclin isn’t consistent then Jackson will see double coverage all the time and won’t make the big plays. But is Maclin plays really well, the coverage on Jackson has to be loosened.

At the end of the day I think Maclin just has the physical skills necessary to be a very good receiver in this league for a long time, consistently over 10-12 years. Now we will have to see if he can put it together on the field. But Jackson is a one trick pony and not to many good teams are going have their tackle broken by an 170 pount receiver like the Chiefs. Just won’t happen against good team.

And yeah, they do need to stop comparing themselves to NFL hall of famers and at least go out there and do something noteworthy on the field.

Bradley’s reported to be ok with a “slight calf-sprain” as was reported by the Eagles..
He was out jogging along the sidelines after yesterday’s afternoon practice….
(my sister at Thomas Jefferson Hospital gave me some bad info yesterday by mistake and stated they have a new x-ray technician working there who is originally from Dallas,Tx and was passing along some bad info to get back at Eagle Fans, Plus my sister is still mad at me for giving her a
cheap wedding gift over 20 years ago.)
