Preseason Week 3: My Thoughts On The Eagles/Chiefs Game

That wasn’t supposed to be the outcome of last night’s game. When you play the Kansas City Chiefs (4-12) in the third preseason game where the starters play for three quarters, you shouldn’t have to depend on your third string quarterback to bail you out in the end.
The most positive thing about the Eagles 20-17 victory last night was nobody was seriously hurt. DeSean Jackson, Trent Cole, and Mike McGlynn all went down which caused quite a scare. Fortunately, McGlynn was able to return. Cole and Jackson should be fine.
While the defense had a strong outing, the offense was out of sync.  I don’t know if they underestimated the Chiefs, but the Eagles can ill-afford a lot of the mistakes they committed.
Here’s my observations…..
•    It’s good to see that Kevin Kolb is mobile enough to make things happen when needed.  But, it looked like he has no trust in his offensive line and I can’t blame him.
•    Jason Peters is the epitome of why I’m not big on the term ‘proven’.  The ‘proven’ Pro Bowl left tackle has horrendous awareness.  His false starts are so obvious I was throwing flags in my living room.
•    Mr. Maclin, I hope you have a very, very short memory.  Just don’t keep forgetting how to catch a ball the way you did last night, please.  I still have high hopes for you.
•    If Asante Samuel can keep hitting the way he hit Dexter McCluster, teams might just stop throwing screens and swing passes in that direction.
•    It was good to see Todd Herremans out there.  Next up, Jamaal Jackson.
•    This new way the referees are lining up is ruining the flow of the game.
•    Eric Berry is the truth!!  The Chiefs can build their secondary around him.
•    Andy Studebaker is a prime example of why the Eagles shouldn’t waste time with players better suited for a 3-4 defense.  He looks pretty good out there.
•    Hindsight is 20/20.  If the Eagles knew last year that they were going to trade Donovan McNabb, I don’t think they would’ve traded for Peters.  They could’ve saved money, kept this year’s 6th rounder and traded up for Michael Oher.
•    I’ve said it before.  I want Derrick Johnson as the Eagles SAM linebacker if he ever becomes an unrestricted free agent.  He’s not a 3-4 guy.
•    The stats didn’t look good, but Mike Bell plays with a lot of effort.  He’ll get his share of red zone TDs if he can stay healthy.
•    Don’t be surprised if Trevard Lindley moves ahead of Joselio Hanson on the cornerback depth chart by mid-season.
•    Can somebody tell me what was the penalty that kept the Chiefs first TD drive going?
•    Oh yeah, the refs were horrible.
•    If Quintin Demps makes the final roster, it’ll be solely because of his kick return ability.
•    I’m so relieved Trent Cole’s injury was mild.  Him and Brandon Graham are going be a heck of tandem.
•    I think I’m comfortable with Mike Kafka as the No. 2 QB next season.
•    Macho Harris has until next week to make an impression.  I know he’s been hurt, but he looked like he stayed in the wrong spot.

I think I’ve said enough.  There won’t be much else to see from the starters the rest of the preseason.  Next week is elimination rounds for this year’s edition of “Eagle Idol”.
A lot of the Eagles mistakes were self inflicted.  They better be ready by September 12.  Green Bay is not a team you want to make those mistakes against.
GO EAGLES!!

Damn Songs, 43 pts? I’m not ready to anoint our D as the second coming of da 85 Bears, but I don’t think we’ll give up that many points. Actually, let me rephrase that, I’m not quite sure our Defense will allow 43 points. I’m leaving Pick 6’s and kickoff and punt returns out of the equation, so let me shut my mouth.

Good stuff Haran,
Will be interesting this week to see if many # 1’s even play versus the tough Jets defense on a short week..Do you play Kolb and Starters for the 1st Quarter and potenially risk some of them being injured and even more frustrated than they already are…Or do you play them to hope to find some type of Offensive Rhythm and develope some Confidence before the Regular Season.
The biggest positive so far this camp/preseason is the lack of any serious injuries on either side of the ball. If it was my call, I would not play many of the #1’s and get a good solid 2 1/2 weeks of practice to preapre for the Packers… I would sit Kolb,McCoy,D-Jax,Maclin,Celek and the let Vick/Kafka take a half and use a Backfield of C Scott,Martell,Bucklet & Bell take the brunt of the snaps.. At WR, I would not play D-Jax/MAclin& Avant and let Cooper,Baskett,Washington,Collins and Hall take the snaps. I would have the #1 O/Line in for a 1/4 and then substitute from there
I think about 4-5 spots are up for grabs
On Offense it’s pretty much much Baskett,Washington,Hall & Collins playing for probably 1 Spot and maybe 2 if the decide to go with 6 WR
In the Backfield, It’s 3rd RB Buckley job to lose but C Scott/Martell can earn a Practice Squad spot with a strong perfomance
Along the O/Line, Topou,Dunlap,Reynolds,Shipley are all playing for maybe 1 spot for the Practice
Squad
There are some good battles and roster spots for grabs on the Defense
The 4th Safety roster spot will be a battle of Demps,Macho Harris ( I think Coleman is a lock)
The Linebackers offer the most competitions (with Bradley,Sims,Jordan,Gaither,Clayton as locks)
It’s between Fokou,White,Cheney for the final spot .. I see Cheney going to the Practice Squad and there is a possibilty the Eagles keep 7 LB’s
The CB’s I think are pretty set with Samuel,Hobbs,Hanson,Patterson,& Lindley so Macho Harris will have to make it as a 4th Safety and beat out Demps to earn a spot
The DE is set with Cole,Graham,Parker,Tapp and Teo all locks with Sapp to Practice squad and Moncur probably cut and at DT it’s Bunkley,Patterson,Dixon & Laws and probably J Owens to the Practice squad

here’s some qoutes heard this off season…

“No more throws in the dirt now Mcnabb’s gone” – Kolb threw a ground ball

“No more holding the ball and taking stupid sacks since Mcnabb’s gone” -Kolb runs out of bounds holding the ball on a one yard loss…counts for a sack

“More accurate passes and “YAC” since Mcnabb’s gone. – Kolb overthrows a wide open Avant over the middle that could have easily been intercepted and on another play hits the opposing player between the numbers for a stupid interception.

“The Eagles will get the ball out quick now Mcnabb’s gone” – Kolb quotes “I should have read the blitzes better and got it to the hot reads”

“The Eagles will have more leadership presence in the huddle now Mcnabb’s gone.”

Kolb have “0” touchdowns this preseason – The 1st time in Eagles history that the starting quarterback goes 3 consecutive games in preseason without a touchdown.

“The offense will be fine…it’s the defense we need to worry about improving”.

WHAT?

I understand this is just preseseason and this was to be expected with our Eagles playing against an all world class beast called the “Kansas City Chiefs”…..

you’re not concerned that this Coaching staff and Front Office sold you on moving a franchise QB?

Listen folks…the difference between most NFL teams is the QB play. Without Manning the Colts are just another team..and that’s true about any team that’s successful unless you have a number one defense across the board. The QB is not just another position…it’s the most improtant position in Sports and Makes or breaks a franchise.

The players do ot believe in Kolb…Mcnabb have a resume that makes players who play with him better!!!!!!!

He’s a proven warrior!!!!!!

We are less than what we were before Mcnabb came…believe it and get use to it.

This may take 15 years to fix.

Mr. Garry Wilbert Cobb sir, the next time you update your site, “like” and “unlike” buttons would be a nice idea because I would definitely hit like a dozen times on SONGS previous post. Also, a nice auto email reply message that gets sent to all active participants in a blog would be nice as well. I’m just saying, not hating just adding some ideas.

Songs,
Give the McNAbb is a franchise players a rest..
Most football fans know the Eagles Record of 11-5 was a mirage last year and that they were winless versus any team with a winning record and were completely manhandled the last 2 games of the Season when they actually faced a good Defense. In fact, the year before (2008) when the Eagles made the NFC Championship game, they limped in with a 9-6-1 Overall Record and needed help from from about 2-3 othe teams losing their final 2 games of the season just to make it in the playoffs. After checking McNabb’s Win-Lost record since the 2004 Super Bowl Season, it’s barely over .500 Face it, this team is just slightly above average and has been for the last 5 years… It is what it is…

That’s what he is….. and I refuse to ignore his contribution because this incompetent organization decided to move to Hoying Jr.

The Media couldn’t give Mcnabb a break and they are now retracking some of their enthusiasm concerning Kolb…What if what we seen so far is Kolb’s best?

How many games you think we’ll win if Kolb continues with the performance we’ve viewed thus far?

Songs, you are 100% correct, absolutely right that nobody should ignore his contributions to the Eagles franchise. McNabb was amazing, incredible at times – many of them – for a long long time. He should be remembered as the best Eagles QB ever until someone plays better and wins a superbowl, and one of the all time best Eagles QBs ever after that point. But he’s not an Eagle, and whatever Kolb and the team does now, has nothing to do with Donovan. Kolb may struggle, and he may win a superbowl for the Eagles someday, but none of that at all relates to Donovan McNabb. If what we’ve seen so far turns out to be Kolb’s best, then the Eagles will move on after next year, probably with kafka and whoever they have on the roster at QB at the time, or someone they draft. And then they’ll either win or lose with them. In the meantime, this will have no effect on whether you, I, or anyone else is healthy and living and free to live their lifes and prosper. But you’re dommsday bullshit is not part of the future. The Eagles might now succeed. Kolb might not succeed. That’s part of sports – you play and risk losing. Man up and face the reality – Kolb is the QB. The Eagles will have plenty of opportunity to develop and win games this year, and the games will be decided by the points on the scoreboard – your pessimism won’t factor into any of it. Neither will Donovan McNabb.

Thomas, Runyan helped Mcnabb out for a long time. What does Kolb have? Mcnabb was not so hot the last two years that’s because of the aging O-line. I am a Mcnabb fan, but I believe Kolb would have taken us to the Superbowl once or twice during those 4 straight NFC Championship games.

schiller

August 29, 2010 6:27 pm

I agree with tydm in that our O line is pretty poor in pass protection right now so that’s a factor. I think the only correct answer to Song’s question is that we don’t know. It may be. It might not be. We really, honestly do not know. If you think you know, either way – good or bad – I say, you can’t due to not enough games played as starter yet. Games – regular season – you know with game plans and practices geared toward the opponent, plays called to beat the other team not just warm your own up -….you get the idea. We will only begin to know that answer, Songs, after this season, and it won’t be fully answered until the beginning of Kolb’s career as a starter morphs into the middle of his career. We’re not there yet.

schiller
schiller
August 29, 2010 6:30 pm

Meanwhile I think Kolb will continue to show that he’s good at scrabling, passing on the run, hitting Celek, hitting Avant, hitting McCoy, Weaver, and I also think that the line – while sucking in pass protection, can be quite adequate at run blocking – left side (obviously) more so. Reid did give young Donovan a run game with the three headed monsters for a while there early on as part of the development process. I think Kolb can be successful with this offense without using the (outside) WRs much at all. Then you set up situations where the WRs will be open and used as deep threats.

To Songs,
As of Today- McNabb is the Better QB over Kolb as he should be for playing 10-12 Season and starting over 125 games, but I think Kolb will lead a better overall Offense for the Eagles and increase their chances of winning once he gets some experience under his belt..I don’t expect it to happen this year, but I believe the Eagles will be a better offense and team come 2011 and for the future.

SONGSRME2
SONGSRME2
August 29, 2010 8:06 pm

Schill, let’s make this clear. Kolb had 4 years to develop…he’s 26 years old so don’t give excuses here. The reason this organization was able to sell the public on this guy is because they were confident he was ready. So, let’s throw the develop word out and apply that to Kafka. 2nd we are not going to use the O line problems to excuse Kolb any more than we could use it for Mcnabb. The FO along with Andy gushed about the opportunity to get Peters and gave good money to Stacey Andrews, and resigned Justice, therefore they have confidence in the line an didn’t think it was that big of a deal ignoring it during the draft and Free agency periods.

3rd Waiting for a year to know what we have now is straight garbage. Mcnabb showed us early on why he was drafted so high and it didn’t take a year..Every time he was put in there were results and we knew we had a franchise QB for the future. The same can not be said for Kolb. No more wait and see. Do it now or be gone with the bonehead decision makers who have destryed the cohesiveness of this team. You still didn”t answer the question…Is Kolb a better QB thqn Mcnabb?

To Songs
Again no comparison to when McNabb was chosen and started right away with a brand new Coaching regime on a terrible team that have very little talent, expectations and really had no one else to play QB, McNabb learned quickly and played pretty well his first couple of years to help lead the Eagles to repectability. This is an entirely different situation, where you have an established team and the same coaches, so let’s see how he (Kolb) performs.. I agree that he has had 3years to learn the system and has a lot more talent to spread the ball around than MCNAbb ever had, but like I stated numerous times, It will take at least 10 games and proabably even an entire season to really judge on whether Kolb will be the Franchise QB for the Eagles for the next 10 years..
Any arguments either way, for or against the move is a waste of energy and words, for no one knows until he actually plays the games…What we do know is that the team has moved forward without McNabb and I believe McNabb has also moved on with another team and a job to do for the Redskins which will be his focus.. So lets see what he new QB can do and I am not going to abadone ship for a crappy lack-luster Preseason games,,, Look at the Cowboys,Giants and Redksins # 1 offenses,
are they going to ditch Romo for McGhee, bench Eli for B Rhomar or sit McNabb for Rex Grossman… Your arguments are old, stale and simply put, very child-like at this point…

How did The Giants crawl from a door mat in the NFC East to win a Superbowl while we were the salary cap champs? How do we go from the best team in the NFC east to getting molested by the stinking Cowboys? Now, we are going to see the Redskins excel beyond our “Golden Standard ” and you want me to say nothing?

Here’s the Bottom line with the Eagles over the last 5-8 years as far as I am concerned in relation to the other teams in the NFC East,..The Eagles have continued to get soft year after year and rely too muck on speed, deception and gimmick plays which if you are playing umfamiliar teams works well.
When you play the Cowboys,Giants and Redksins Twice a year and try to rely on schemes, gadget plays and pure speed without the Physical Presence along the line of scrimmage and that hard-ditting safety to take your head off when you come across the middle, you will not be successful
The Eagles have become soft under AR/MM and J Johnson to S McDermott..

Both leaders who knows the system that bring toughness to the field.

Even Sheldon said he would gladly move to safety last year if they were to pay him his worth. This move alone would have saved the drafting of allen so high and maybe addressed a position of need along the offensive line this year. Keeping Mcnabb along with bolstering the linemen would have assured us talking about another run this year instead of a wait and see perspective, along with accepting the fact that this team is not good enough to think about playoffs. We’re hoping Kolb can play QB in this league..Damn, what difference a year makes.

In the Eagles case Songes,
I think the Offense will be more dynamic under Kolb (Not overnight, but by mid-late season)
I think the Eagles Franchise from the coaches, players to many fans and some in the media were a
little “McNabb Fatigued”. It was known in most Eagle Circles that by not extended his deal after 2008 and basically giving him a raise before last season, that his time had come to an end in Philadelphia. They gave him a pretty good deal when you think about it, He was traded to the successful franchise with passionate fans and Super Bowl Tradition, got to join a team with a
a successful coach, in Shanahan, and has a good shot at getting another contract extenstion from a walthy owner in Snyder which is very unlikely to occur at many other organizations right now due to no CBA. so all in all, I don’t feel bad for McNAbb or the Eagles, it was time for all to move on and look to the future with younger players like Kolb,McCoy,Allen,Graham,D-jax,Celek,Bradley,etc,etc
B Dawk was not worth a guaranteed $9 Million that the Broncos paid him, I wish he retired an Eagle but the fact is that the Broncos way overpaid for him at this stage of his career, and BRown was on his way down as far as peed, injnuries were starting to settle in.. What made me the most upset about Dawkins departure is how unprepared the Eagles were in grooming his replacement (which never occurred) and then taking over a year to address it with some quality personne..
Sean Jones last year by most observors, including myself, thought he would be a decent replacement for a year or 2 and not turn out to be the bust that he became.. Appraently he had a real hard time with picking up the playbook… Q Demps had a pretty good Rookie Season but has appeared to regress a little each year to the point that he probably doesn;’t make the squad in 2010
I like N Allen and late draft pick K Coleman who I think becomes the #3 Safety this year and will proabably replace Mickell next year.
Players come and go, time marches on and that’s the nature of the sports and many other things in life in general these days, the only constant thing you can count on in life is change…
As far as taking a legitimate run at the SUper Bowl, I don’t expect one this year with Kolb at the helm and quite honestly, I did not expect one with McNabb the last couple of years he was here
or even if he still was here this year…they have too many holes and lots of young players up and down this line-up in my opinion, not the type of System and Coaching that will win Chanpionships and I am still not sold on D/C McDermott but the Defense does appear to be improved from the last 2 seasons..

First off Paul…there’s no signs that this offense will be more dynamic under Kolb, so you can save that.

2nd I don’t know what circles you’re talking about but the circles I frequent understands what this franchise was before Mcnabb and what to expect from him on the field, so if people are getting fatigued …who cares? Wins and losses matter….QB is not a popularity contest.

3rd BDawk was worth 9 million guaranteed …you’re just repeating what the organization put there as an excuse to railroad a great leader and player that’s still better than any safety on our present team.

Players do come and go but if you look at the league certain players stay put. If this organization was really concerned about developing the young talent they would have kept the veteran leadership and veteran talent. If this stupid organization would have kept Mcnabb and addressed the offensive line and secondary and still drafted Graham…..we would be talking advancing further into the playoffs with the repoire Mcnabb developed with the Young receivers but instead we’re talking about waiting for something that have a greater chance of failure than success…We must wait for Kolb to become close to what we already had…Mcnabb was right when he stated it was unnecessary to draft Kolb when there was other glaring positions that needed attention. Kolb was a wasted pick and cost us a first round talent. We finally have the skilled positions in place with “a deer in the headlights” as the glue to bring it together.

Andy Reid should be called “Blind Spot” Andy

He can not have everything in place at one time.

You’re saying that he’s not a perfect football coach, and he’s incapable of making a perfect football team. WOW – you’re a freakin genius. Newsflash – that’s true about every single frickin coach, and human in life for that matter. Do you see how ridiculous your perspective is now? No team ever has everything in place. You can pretend the SB winnner did every year, but no, they just won the games at the right time, that doesn’t mean they had a great line, LB corp, secondary, Wr corp, RB tandem, QB, OL, ST…etc…. you’re holding Reid to the standards of a superhero – what a surprise that you’re disappointed.

Kolb is better at the West Coast Offense than Mcnabb. He can throw a slant. i believe in the 4 straight championship games that Mcnabb lost, Kolb’s ability to throw a simple slant would have helped. Plus be it Garcia or Kolb, the team for some reason, plays harder for them.that would have helped. Plus under Kolb, i am sure they would have ran the ball more(like Reid did with Garcia) would have given them a better chance for victory. So yes, even with dumb luck, Kolb would have won one.
