GCobb.com Readers Have More To Say

GCobb.com readers have more to say.  The Eagles are headed into a huge game with the Detroit Lions and a number of their key players are banged up, but many Eagles fans still have much to say about Donovan's comments.

From Mark,
Mcnabb has been unfairly attacked over race, but 2 of the 3 times it was from blacks-TO and Mondesire;
the other time from Rush Limbaugh.

His latest crying, while true, will hurt him with his black teammates. Westbrook has pretty much said he thinks Garcia a better leader.
mcNabb has shown a lot of psychological weakness in 2005 and 2006; signs of it before. I expect him to collapse.

From John,
The e-mail you posted today demonstrates the sender's complete misunderstanding of the Rush Limbaugh comments.  The same misunderstanding that most people seemed to have over those comments.

Limbaugh did not "call out all black quarterbacks."  He did not even "call out" McNabb.  He was making a legitimate point about the fact that McNabb was getting more hype and credit for the Eagles success at the time than he probably deserved, at the expense of the very strong Eagles defense and special teams.  I agreed with Rush on that point and I think many people did.  The Eagles were succesful from 2000 to 2003 primarily because of their strong defense and special teams, but many fans and the media had McNabb in the Hall of Fame already.  The Eagles even won 5 games with Koy Detmer and AJ Feeley as the quarterback – that should have been enough evidence to show how important the D and special teams were.

Limbaugh then tried to come up with an explanation for why McNabb got far more credit than the Eagles defense and special teams for the team's success.  He argued it was becuase the media wanted to see a black quaterback succeed.  How that comment is racist, is beyond me.  It is not racist to make a social comment on how some people's opinions are influenced by racial distinctions.  If it is, then McNabb's comments this week were racist.

Limbaugh did not claim McNabb wasn't a good quarterback or couldn't be a good quarterback because he was black.  He was merely saying that the MEDIA had an inflated perception of McNabb's level of play because the MEDIA wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.  Of course, the over sensitive types jumped all over it and the rest is history.

Personally, I disagreed with Rush's reasoning on why McNabb was prematurely labeled a Hall of Famer and getting far more credit than the Eagles D for the team's success.  I think it's just because the sports media and fans are always just looking for the next great player to hype, whether the guy is black or white, particularly at the QB position.  See all the hoopla over Kurt Warner, Eli Manning, Michael Vick, etc.

From Bill,

In regards to Donovan McNabb's statements, I agree with him.  There is no doubt that questions arise because he is a black player, and also has helped blaze a trail that some of the younger black q-backs of today do not have to experience.  In regards to Rush Limbaughs comments several years ago, they were not racist comments.  What he stated was a simple fact at the time.  The media of today creates the news they feel we should hear or know, which fits a template, instead of simply reporting facts.  Limbaughs comments, simply put, stated that the NFL and the sports media in general wanted to see a Black quarterback stand out, and at that time McNabb was not a great q-back, but had made pro bowl status even though his leadership and precision, on – field skills were avg at best. I love McNabb's abilities and what he has brought to this team and I understood those comments at that time, as I do today.  Racism isn't what it used to be and especially in the NFL, because of players such as McNabb and McNair, who had to shoulder a much higher indignation as black q-backs than do their younger counterparts, but it still exsists.  The botoom line is McNabb is entitled to his opinion and others are entitled to thiers, whether or not they are valid.  Winning football games is all that matters anyway.  I believe McNabb is laying the foundation for his soon-to-be departure.  He will be missed but I also believe this organization will continue to flourish as a winner, the only consistnet winner in the city.

From Greg,

GCOBB,

If Cataldi claims he reads your site, why is he placing so much weight in the stupid responses that came from Young and Campbell on the topic of Donovan's comments.

Even if it's behind closed doors you need to start calling this guy on the carpet.  If he read your article on this before he came on and placed all this weight on their comments, that could be considered racially motivated.

By the way, ask Hugh to stand up for his people on that damn station more often and stop worrying about his radio career.  If he stands up like most don't, everything will fall into place for him.  I have been waiting for a black person to get on that morning show just to hear a voice from a true black perspective and though I hear it sometimes I really don't hear it enough anddefinately stand up when you know Angelo and Rea are talking without knowing how it is to be black.  Especially Rhea, there is definatly some issues there, I'll just leave it at that.  Sorry to rant on Hugh to you but I don't have his e-mail address and couldn't find it.  Please forward this to him.  You guys may not know bu there is a whole segment of blacks that have waited for this.

Keep up the good work because you're on point so often.

HUGH, READ GCOBB'S SITE IF YOU NEED A BETTER PERSPECTIVE.

GCOBB, how about your next story being about Andy Reid being Donovan's worst enemy.  Think about it, 8 years no consistant quality WR's, never running the ball consistantly, not being critical causing a division between Donovan and his team, allowing him to play right now AND TAKE ALL THIS CRITICISM, when it's obvious he is not completely healed and cannot do the things he needs to be able to do.  The list of things goes on and on when you look at it.

How do we know that Andy's success is not only a result of what Donovan has been able to accomplish.

I'm sick of this team and it's so much more Andy than Donovan.

Again thanks for the great insight on your website.

GREG

Yes G,

If McNabb leaves, he leaves about $5-7 Million per year on the table compared to Kolb. That's raises for 6-7-8-9 other guys. An extra Million here, an extra Half Million there. Lotta guys would like to share in that cash.

But I have another question, G. I know Donovan has had his issues, but he always gave it all on the field. And his play has covered a lot of team deficiencies in talent, and in coaching. Yeah, I said it – COACHING!

So now everybody seems to have a reason to agree that he should go when I listen to them comment with subtle remarks. Banner probably doesn't want to pay him. Reid can get a pass for a few more years if Donovan is scapegoated. Kevin Kolb wants to start. And all the free agents coming up the next 2-3 years want to share that money. So it all seems lined up for Donovan to be wearing a number 5 Bears Jersey next year.

But if the Eagles blame Donovan and kick him to the curb, I don't know if I will want to root for them the same way i do now. What do you think, G? You think the Eagles take a hit with the fans if the cut Donovan loose?

Always a nice job, G!!!!

From Kevin,

I noticed with interest Micah Warren's comments in the article posted on your blog. I must admit he irritated me. He pompously asserts that journalists are highly intelligent & were not the subject of Donovan's comments. He did, however assert by personal experience at a bar, which is anecdotal that the fans are boorish, racist louts my interpretation).I have no doubt he reported his experiences accurately, but how does anyone indict an entire fan base from idle comments at a bar?
I've lived in Tampa for ten years & have gone to watch the Eagles at the same bar all along. I've made many friends from all over the country who are transplants. Some think Donovan is great (like me), others think he's overrated, But I can not recall similar comments in any abundance like those of Mr. Warrens. I'm not saying he's wrong nor am I  naively asserting those views aren't expressed, but it is disturbing that he would paint all Eagles fans with such a defammatory broad brush.

From Dan,

Whitlock states that "…the asserttion is neither debatable nor controversial " that black NFL quaterbacks face more secrutiny than their white counterparts. He then offers rediculous reasons. This is not the 1950's. The race barrier for blck quarterbacks was broken successfully and for all time by those who came before McNabb. To blame management/ownership, who have coddled McNabb, for his perception is just wrong. Obviosly Donovan see's many things in his life in black and white and he is entitled to do so, but that doesn't make it correct.

From Dan,

Sometimes perceived adversity brings out the best in others. Westbrook's injury may give Reid a chance to see what Hunt can do, if passing doesn't exceed rushing by a 3 or 4 to 1 margin. As for L.J., it might be best to forget him for a while and give Celek a chance. The biggest problem is what to do if Donovan continues to be hurt and plays like he did in the first two games. To put Kolb in may be giving up the season and may shell shock him like it did  Norm Snead when he was put in too quickly. Personally, I would let Donovan play hoping he can get his timing and touch back and only use Kolb for the last few games if by then the team is out of the playoffs.
