With Halloween a couple of weeks in the rear view mirror, the Eagles performed a masterful case of "coming back from the dead".
I could hear Eagles fans throughout the Delaware Valley moaning in pain as the Birds seemed sure to be headed to their sixth loss. It was at this moment with sure defeat staring them in the face that the Birds came alive. It's still probably too late for their playoff hopes but Birds fans will take it.
The hug at the end of the game said it all. The embattled head coach Andy Reid grabbed his embattled quarterback Donovan McNabb as the Eagles stole a game from the Washington Redskins. Will this mean the Eagles are headed to the playoffs and McNabb will be back next year? No but it was a great win nonetheless. The Eagles defense which had been dominated all day by the Redskins, made a goalline stand to give the Birds "O" a chance to pull it out. When the Eagles got the ball back, McNabb tossed a screen to "Mr. Everything", Brian Westbrook who utilized some great blocks by the "O" line to take the pass 52 yards for a go ahead score. The hug between Reid and McNabb, marked a remarkable come from behind victory, and was pure joy for these two men who have suffered immensely both on and off the field the entire season.
You can say what you want about Reid and McNabb but they're not quitters. Both of them have displayed "never say die character" in the past, and it showed up at the end of the Redskins win. We don't need to get too caught up in the win but it keeps the Eagles bleak post-season hopes alive for another couple of weeks.
McNabb made quite a few errors during the contest. None of them was more costly than the fumble he committed in the fourth quarter with the Eagles trailing by two. He was sitting in the pocket holding the ball in one hand when the Redskins sacked him and knocked the ball free. The way the season has been going, I expected that to insure another Eagles defeat but you've got to credit the Birds by refusing to give up. McNabb got another shot and came back to life when he had to and made the best of the opportunity. On the day Donovan threw for 4 scores.
What can you say about Brain Westbrook? He did it all for the Birds while scoring three touchdowns and making something out of nothing each time he touched the football. Remember that Westbrook continues shining even though the entire Redskins linebacker corps and at times, entire defense was keying on him. I think he's the most complete running back in the NFL
It was great to see Eagles tight end L.J. Smith, who has been sleeping in a casket all year long. He got open just in the nick of time for a touchdown pass. Smith also grabbed a long throw over the middle from McNabb. His emergence should help the outside receiver. It's about time for a guy who only thought is in getting a new contract with the Eagles or some other NFL team.
Again as usual, Reggie Brown was impersonating the invisible man most of the day, but all is forgiven because he made a magnificent catch on a poorly thrown ball by McNabb. We need to see more plays like this from Brown. Good receivers make a habit of making good plays.
