Surprising Times For WR’s At Combine

Michigan’s Mario Manningham was supposed to be a speed guy but he ran a 4.6 in the forty yard dash and measured out as just under 6 feet .  He’s definitely not the guy for the Birds. Wide receiver Devin Thomas from Michigan State helped himself mightily by running a 4.4 in the 40 yard dash.

Thomas is the kind of receiver that I could see the Eagles grab.  He big and physical and may be the threat the Eagles need in the red zone.  I don't think there are any receivers in this year's draft who are going come in and give the Birds immediate help.  Hopefully the Birds will change the way they treat their rookies.

The Eagles can't get too enamored with the Combine results.   They've got to take the numbers and compare them to what they see on tape.  You only use the Combine numbers to verify what you see on tape.  You don't let the numbers from the Combine make you think a guy is a good player if he doesn't look that way on tape.

Many have talked about LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey as the number one pick in this year’s draft but he didn’t’ help himself by coming to the combine injured.  He revealed on Sunday in Indianapolis that he had suffered a hairline fracture of his right tibia in 2006.

Dorsey didn’t work out for the scouts because he had stopped preparing for the combine after his grandmother died.  He’s going to workout for the scouts on March 26 at LSU’s Pro Day.

Arkansas running back and possible number one pick in the draft, Darren McFadden didn’t hurt his chances of being one of the first picks in the draft when he ran a forty yard dash officially timed at 4.33.   He was clocked unofficially at 4.27.  When you combine that with his size you’ve got quite a prospect.

East Caroliina's Chris Johnson blazed the fastest time for the running backs .  Four or five of the running backs were in the 4.3's in the forty.  The draft is supposed to be deep in running backs this year and that's why I'd like to see Eagles grab a speedy back to back up Brian Westbrook.

Personally I don’t think he’s going to be the player teams expect him to be because scouts say he’s got poor vision.  Vision is extremely important on the pro level.  You’re not going to be able to just simply outrun people in the pro’s, so you’ve got to have good vision and utilize your blocking.  I think that’s the reason Reggie Bush hasn’t been as productive as expected.
