Cowboys Release Terrelll Owens

In stunning news, the Dallas Cowboys have released wide receiver Terrell Owens. It had been rumored for weeks but nothing had happened until now.

There are quite a few teams who might greatly benefit from adding the controversial yet amazingly talented wide receiver.

Owens didn't have a great year for his standards in 2008.  He caught 69 passes for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns, which is his lowest yardage total in a full season since 1999.

The reason his release is so surprising, is the fact that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is opening a 100,000-seat stadium and gave him a truck load of money last year.

The Cowboys paid Owens a $12 million dollar signing bonus a year ago, which was part of a four-year, $34 million dollar deal.

The salary cap consequences of releasing Owens right now are very damaging for Dallas because they will have to absorb a $9 million dollar salary cap hit.

It's common knowledge that there were very few people in the Valley Ranch complex, which is home of the Cowboys, who were in favor of hanging onto the Hall of Fame-bound wideout.

The one individual who had been willing was Jones, but the constant urging of his coaching staff and other players got to him and he finally relented.

Owens had an ongoing spat with teammates Tony Romo and Jason Witten, as well as offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.  He accused them of conspiring to throw more balls to Witten.

This wasn't a first-time thing for Owens because he battled quarterback Jeff Garcia and head coach Steve Marriuci in San Francisco.  Then he had it out with Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid here in Philadelphia.

He wound up catching 38 touchdowns with the Cowboys over his three seasons in Big D.
