The Overhyped Quarterback Position

Deep down I don’t like quarterbacks because they’re over-hyped by the NFL for marketing purposes.  For instance, have you heard enough about Brett Favre?

At times I regret the fact that I find myself defending Donovan McNabb because I'm not a quarterback lover.  I just don’t believe in leveling all the criticism for a team’s failures on one guy.

A quarterback is nothing without a good support group.  If the offensive line, running game and receivers don’t do their jobs, it doesn’t matter who the quarterback is.

In addition, the defense plays an important role.  If the defense can’t stop anybody, they make the quarterback’s job nearly impossible.

The great Tom Brady managed 14 points in the Super Bowl because he was knocked on his butt 29 times out of 49 pass plays.

There are numerous quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame who never won a Super Bowl.  Dan Marino, Warren Moon and Dan Fouts come to mind.

They both led high scoring offenses but never won Super Bowl.  Marino got to one Super Bowl and saw his Dolphins run out of town by the 49ers in that game.

The Miami defense didn’t even slow down the Niners.

Fouts and Moon never reached the Super Bowl, but made it to the Hall of Fame.

One example of this quarterback stuff was the way the Eagles receivers was buddying up to McNabb during the OTA’s.

Wide receivers have to kiss the quarterback's butt in order for him to throw the ball to them.  I’ve seen this for years.

Fred Barnett told me last week that Reggie Brown should kiss up to McNabb because a good receiver will never let there be a problem in his relationship with the quarterback.

Brown must have had a talk with Fred before the OTA’s because Reggie spent the entire OTA’s following McNabb around like a puppy dog.

He was laughing at his jokes like he was the best comedian on the planet.

DeSean Jackson was right there as well, but he wasn't following McNabb around like Brown was doing.

I read a story about  wide receiver Roy Williams talking about kissing his quarterback Tony Romo's butt.

“Just catch the ball when he throws it to me, any way I can,” Williams said. “And buddy him up, bring him some food, let him borrow some money if he needs some, just be his best friend.

“I’ve just got to continue to be his best friend. Put my arm around him and hug him, tell him that his girlfriend looks good, and we’ll go from there.”

I have never liked this quarterback stuff.

Quarterbacks are given MVP trophies because they're supposed to get them.  Whatever happened to going out and earning them.
Peyton Manning and Eli Manning were given the Super Bowl MVP eventhough neither one of them should have received the award.

With Eli, the Giants defensive line dominated the game against one of the highest scoring offenses in the history of the NFL.  Justin Tuck was monster in the middle of the defense with two sacks and multiple quarterback pressures on Tom Brady.

With Peyton, the Colts ran for 190 yards and the defense scored on a interception return.  Peyton couldn't get the Indianapolis offense into the endzone despite getting into the red zone 5 times.

He was totally frustrated with his performance but got a MVP trophy anyway.
