The Phillies have given us the answer. I am constantly hearing from fans and from local media outlets that if the Eagles win a Super Bowl he/she could handle and ACCEPT any losing that would follow.
Losing seasons would be easy to deal with because Philly could just bask in the glory of a Super Bowl title.
These people are nuts. I can't argue that the Eagles winning a Super Bowl wouldn't be amazing. Victory celebrations would engulf the city. Players would forever have iconic stature in Philadelphia.
But if the following NFL season is filled with consistent losing we Eagles' fan would be right back to our criticism and demands for the QB to be benched and the coach to be fired. This isn't Detroit or Dallas, Philadelphia wants winners each and every year.
If you don't believe me just look at what is currently going on with the Phillies.
Last season the Phillies captured the city's first title in 25+ years. The city was crazy in love with the guys in red. Everywhere you looked people were wearing championship hats and shirts. Fans couldn't wait to purchase their tickets to sell out Citizens Bank Park this season.
If things went badly for the Phillies in 2009 we fans wouldn't care. We could just replay highlights and memories from the championship season. If the team began losing we fans would be accepting and cut the team some slack.
The Phillies might have enjoyed a little immunity at the start of the season, but now we fans have become disgusted with the team's recent play and continued losing.
The comments that Charlie is an idiot manager have again resurfaced. Questions about Hamels being a true ace are being asked. And J-Roll needs to be in the first trade out of town. In short, the true Philadelphia fan has returned. We can't be satisfied by one championship season. We now want champions every season.
For the Eagles the ultimate goal remains the Super Bowl title. But as fans we shouldn't disregard all of the winning that has happened over the past decade. It is pretty sweet to go into every season with hopes of a title and then see those hopes turn into playoff wins.
Give us a champion and then CONTINUE to give us champions. Losing will never be tolerated in this city.
