Reid Was Trying To Save His & McNabb’s Job, Now It’s Just McNabb’s

Reid with the headphonePhilly.com reports that Andy Reid’s agent has started contract talks with the Eagles to extend Reid’s contract past the 2010 season.

This is a surprise to me because Reid seemed to making the type of desperate decisions which coaches make who are trying to save their jobs.  He seemed to be pulling out all the stops.

I had the feeling after looking at Reid’s player personnel decisions, I thought he was in a win a championship or move on type of situation.

The old Reid would have never signed the controversial quarterback Michael Vick or resigned veteran linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, a linebacker who hasn’t played in two years.

This win a championship or else type of attitude seemed to be Reid thinking.

I think something has changed since the beginning of the season and I think that something is the emergence of young quarterback Kevin Kolb.  The Eagles front office including Reid had no idea whether Kolb could play or not.

Reid working the sidelinesThe fact that he looks like he could play seems to have given Banner and Lurie the assurance that Reid still has an eye for talent and that they should keep Reid around.

Reid drafted a star in DeSean Jackson and tight end Brent Celek is also becoming a star.

The Birds have been impressed by rookie LeSean McCoy who will take over for Brian Westbrook, then you add Jeremy Maclin and the Eagles have young nucleus in which they can use to go after that elusive Super Bowl.

I think Reid was making desperate decisions early on to keep his job and his quarterback Donovan McNabb’s job, but I think he’s now just trying to save McNabb’s.

If the Eagles don’t at least go to the Super Bowl, I think Kolb will be the team’s starting quarterback next year.

Reid is now trying to give the quarterback who has been with him for over a decade the best chance he can to win a championship and get his own contract extension.
