Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg have an important decision to make on Sunday. How much should they rely on Brian Westbrook as compared to rookie running back LeSean McCoy?
The importance of this weekend’s Eagles-Cowboys game in the career of Westbrook couldn’t be overemphasized.
He’s making millions of dollars to make the Eagles offense more effective but he hasn’t really done that this year.
It doesn’t take a genius to see that the Birds offense has been more effective while he’s been hurt this season as opposed to when he has been in the lineup.
If he doesn’t a have a big game and show that he can still make tacklers miss, I don’t think he will be an Eagle next season.
Westbrook was once able to stop, start and change direction on a dime but we haven’t seen him show us that he can still do that.
Westbrook was at one time impossible to tackle in one-on-one situations. Can he still hit that turbo button when he needs to get out of a jam.
Reid and Mornhinweg must find a way to get Westbrook out in the open field so he can show Reid, Eagles president Joe Banner and the rest of the league that he still has game breaking skills.
The Eagles need him to rediscover his magic immediately. They need him to beat one-on-one linebacker coverage which would put Cowbosys head coach Wade Phillips in a bind.
The Cowboys can’t afford to put more than a linebacker on him if they want to keep a safety deep to safeguard against DeSean Jackson from beating his man deep.
If Westbrook doesn’t do any more than he did in the Sunday game, I don’t think he will return next season.
It’s that simple. Westbrook isn’t on the team because of his size and ability to run people over. He’s on the squad because of his ability to make big plays and make tacklers miss.
As I said earlier, it’s a very important week for number 36.
