Jeff Garcia Is Looking To Start, Not Back Up

Former Eagles signal caller Jeff Garcia’s name continues to come up with regard to being brought in here to backup Birds new starter Kevin Kolb.

I hear that Michael Vick isn’t considered the ideal backup because he’s not a west coast system type quarterback pluse he’s made it clear that he wants to start.

Vick isn’t an ideal quarterback for the west coast offense, but going public with a desire to start is no different than Garcia’s desires.

The veteran signal caller couldn’t be the backup in Oakland or Tampa Bay because he wanted to be and thought he should have been the starter.¬† He hasn’t changed.¬† Garcia thinks he should be a starter and it’s not going to change any time soon.

You can bet that If Garcia wants to come back here, it has to be because he thinks he can start.  If Kolb struggles through a poor start or two, Garcia will be salivating to get a chance to start.

There are some quarterbacks who get long in the tooth and realize that their time of being the number on guy is over and accept it.

There are others who never accept it.  Garcia is one of the others.

If Kolb were to get injured Garcia would be a good guy to have around, but if they really want somebody to help Kolb as he matures, Garcia isn’t the guy.

Join me and the other GCobb.com¬† writers at P.J. Whelihan’s on Rte. 70, in Cherry Hill on Monday night April 12th at 7pm.¬† We’re going to do a mock draft and go through all of the options that the Eagles will have in the first round.

Bring your friends and come on by to talk about the Philadelphia Eagles and the new Kevin Kolb era.

Garcia isn’t the answer, his time has long past. Vick isn’t the answer either, at this point he is merely a gimmick. They should get Bulger and draft a prospect they groom in the later rounds.

Disagree – Garcia is the answer – he comes in as #3 so Vick can run wildcat, Kobb goes down he starts. Draft a prospect in the later rounds for the practice squad (like the kid from Fordham) as your prospect. Bulger would work but Garcia knows the coaches, the town and the system.

Garcia would be a good back up and at 40 (i think he is 40) should realize that his days of starting for someone other than in a relief role is slim to none. If he doesn’t recognize this then stay far far away from him. Also to judge him based on thinking he should have started in Oakland is unfair because frankly he is a better QB than both Jamfatbutt Russettpotatohead and bruce gladtobeherekowsky.

I really don’t care who the birds bring in so long as they unload Vick ASAP.

Unfortunately, Vick isn’t worth much of anything these days. They’re going to hold on to him until training camp if they need to in the hopes that someone gets desperate. It probably won’t happen and we’ll have him for 2010, and then he’ll walk for nothing next year in free agency.

Trade him for a 6th or 7th I don’t care. Hell I would love to turn in vick and receive a punter in return. If you can’t get that for him then may the Turk come quickly to his dorm at lehigh.

Garcia says he wants to start b/c that’s the right thing to say. Who wants a QB that says he wants to ride the bench? Realistically, he is as good a canidate that’s out there. He is a team player and would help Kolb mature, while collecting a paycheck. He was popular among the players in the past, would not make waves, and knows the west coast. This is a good move to make.

I’d love to have him as a backup, too, but he did make waves in Oakland. If he can avoid doing that he’d be great insurance, but if he’s going to be a problem the first time Kolb slips up, then no thanks…

It would be a mistake to pick up Jeff Garcia in my opinion when Marc Bulger is out there. Jeff couldnt even start in Oakland! Hell I could start for oakland. Trade Vick for a 5th or 6th rounder Pick up Tony Pike in the draft. You have Kolb as a starter, Bulger as Backup and a Solid Rookie in Tony Pike (who I am very big on btw) Belive it or not Kolb will be 30 in 3 1/2 years.. You know what that means when your and Eagle so I say draft a QB as 1. Assurance for Kolb if he stinks and 2. When they get rid of him in 3 1/2 years you have a developed QB on your team… God I should be a GM!!

I say sign Garcia bulger whoever and have and open competition to see who starts. This includes vick whoever proves they are the best wins the starting job. Bulger Garcia and vick all have won in the playoffs. If vick was to start this would be the best receiving core he had his whole career. Garcia and bulger are probably done so kolb should be able to easily win the job if u believe all the hype the from the eagles. The eagles hype any new starter up like are the hall of fame bound. Kolb so far has proven he is more likely to throw more ints for tds than tds for eagles so far in the NFL. If kolb wins open competition great but to me he has to prove he should be starter as opposed to just giving him the job because Andy drafted him in 2nd round. We. All know Andy has missed on his share of draft picks in 1st 2nd and 3rd rounds.

What the hell are we doing with Vick? Does anybody really expect him to be here Day 1 of the next season? I refuse to.

PLEASE sign Garcia. I would be much more confident about him playing if/when Kolb gets yanked than Vick. I think Vick will be fine, but in another year. If they bring Garcia in now they the entir off-season to see him matched-up against Kolb and Vick.

some how move vick and sign bulger to a two mybe three year deal. if vick were moved and some how a second/third round pick was obtained then grab the top rated qb with their first pick of the second round

Vricchini – Garcia begged to be released by Oakland because it was such a horrible place to play. They were trying to convince him otherwise. It’s not how you painted it, he MORE than ‘made the raiders’, he just ditched them. And McNabb stayed till he was 33 so why do you think the next QB will be traded when he turns 30?

@ Schiller

Oakland bought in Garcia to sort of mentor Jamarcus and then if Jamarcus didnt work out he would start but because the Raiders are for some God knows reason in love with JaMarcus they cut Garcia.. But anywho I look at it like Jeff is 40 years old and the eagles appear to want to get younger. Jeff Garcia Has not started a game in how long? Marc Bulger is what 5-7 years younger than Jeff and has started since 2002 (or some where around there)

One things for sure Mike Vick cant be the 2nd string QB.

Paulman’s Solution to the lasy 2 issues facing the Eagles…

Trade QB M Vick and CB A Sammuel both to the Oakland Raiders for CB Asamogah and their 4th Rd pick and be done with both of them.. Sign Bulger as a back-up and draft a young QB to start grooming be the eventauk back-up to Kolb.

@ Paulman

I wish that would happen cause even though I dont know too much about Asamogah his highlights are amazing. It would be great if we could keep Asante though.

I wonder about Garcia undermining the team starter. It seems to me that is a pattern of his, to cause a locker room issue that whispers the starter into doubt. It seems to have happened everywhere he has gone. I would not want to see him again on our team.

It doesn’t matter who the backup is. If Kolb goes down or plays poorly, the backup would do nothing better than what McNabb did so we’d still either miss the playoffs or early exit. Don’t see the point in bringing in a guy that wants to start but will only continue mediocity. This 40 year old is not Brett Favre or Kurt Warner.

Garcia has become a journeyman QB and nothing more. He’s over the hill and therefore not a starting QB anymore. He is starting to remind me of Kerry Collins and maybe a little jeff George. The truth is, he would make a great backup because of his knowledge of the west coast offense and his ability to throw the football into spaces. He’s shown us in the past that he is capable of running the offense…remember xmas day against the cowboys. The problem with him is “the past” part….He’s not the same QB as he was 4 years ago, and contrary to what Favre is doing with the vikes, QB’s turn to vinegar around his age…not wine

Draft a QB early McCoy, Pike, Snead, LeFevour, Canfield, Robinson, Tebow. As long as Skelton isnt the guy I dont know Im not comfortable with the drafting a guy who plays Ivy league schools. I just see him as another Andy Hall.

Before and after that all defense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
