Eagles 2nd Round Will Be Just As Important As 1st

Andy Reid has stressed the fact that there will be a lot of planning that goes on during the night and morning after the first round of the draft. He had talked about how a second round pick will be lot like having a first round pick because each team will have the night and morning to think about what they’re going to do.

There will be trades made involving players and draft picks.  The Eagles must make wise moves and have big days on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Reid talked so much about wanting a pick near the top of the second round that you wonder if the Eagles would be willing to trade that 37th pick to move up in the first round.

I believe they will hang onto that one and package other picks to move up in the first round.

New England’s Bill Belichick feels much the same way and he said as much to Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

“I kind of think the second round will now be like the first round,” Belichick told Grossi.¬† “Take those [top] 32 players out of there, whoever they are, now you’re starting all over again for that second round.¬† And I can see it being approached more as that first round.

“In the past, you kind of rolled into that round.¬† Now, to actually stop and have the whole night to sit there and think about it and talk to other teams and develop a new strategy.¬† Everybody does that on the second day; now we have three days.¬† It’s a different dynamic.”

The fact that these second round picks can be signed for much less money isn’t lost on these organizations.

Join me and the other GCobb.com¬† writers at P.J. Whelihan’s on Rte. 70, in Cherry Hill on Monday night April 12th at 7pm.¬† We’re going to do a mock draft and go through all of the options that the Eagles will have in the first round.

Bring your friends and come on by to talk about the Philadelphia Eagles and the new Kevin Kolb era.

I figure that out of their first 5 picks, the Birds need to get three starters, one of whom should turn into a pro-bowler (not this year, but in time.) The other 2 can be busts and that would still be roughly the league average regarding players, where they are drafted and how they pan out in the league. That would be a successful draft.

Forget Probowlers I Just want consistently good starters out of these 3 picks. If we get guys that make a positive impact it bodes well for this team. If we miss we will be set back at least one whole season in the development of this Next generation eagles team.

I agree RegalEagle they need home runs with the first three picks, if they do there will be no such talk of rebuilding. They will continue to win now!!!

I think the 2nd & 3rd Rounds will both be pivotal to the Eagles Success for the next 4-5 years..
Right now they have 2 selctions in the 2nd/3rd rounds and have a total of 8 selctions out of the first 137 players chosen, they need to hit on at least 5 of these selections with 3 of them being on the defensive side of the ball and compete for playing time and be starter material come 2011 at CB,S,LB positions
(at least)

To me, as well as to many of us, the Eagles have been BELOW AVERAGE in drafting under AR. Look at the predicament of our defense in particular. Look at some of the lousy wide receivers and running backs (yes with the exception of Westbrook) that we took. Too many. Lots of people make fun of Roseman (I think it’s because of his name and background) but interestingly, Hugh Douglas praised him on WIP, claiming he was not getting enough credit for his involvement last year. Maybe this year will be the year we hit it big! We need it, badly!

I agree Fan … outside of a couple years when the Eagles hit paydirt with some players, most of their drafts have been AWFUL. Now I’m not one to kill them for guys like McDougal and Justice, because the Eagles went with the conventional wisdom at the time and took players they were universally praised for selecting. You can’t help it when guys don’t live up to their hype … that happens to everyone. 1st round busts are actually just as common as first round successes, so that is what it is.

The guys I kill them for are the reach picks, where they draft players rounds ahead of where they should be selected. Consistently trading away high picks when they clearly need the talent. That’s another area where I question their direction. And then they just pick WAY too many guys in the later rounds that never contribute or even make the roster. This team has picked far too many Norman Lejune’s and Jeremy Bloom’s and far too few Trent Cole’s.

I think the defensive fall-off was tied to 3 things last year
#1) The obvious loss of JJ
#2) The injuries to LB Bradley right out of the gate, then Hobbs, Suspension of Hanson, then Gaither…
#3) I think the biggest letdown was the lack of play and contribution from the following 4 players who the Eagles drafted a coupld of years back and were expecting some good things and basically got a goose egg from all 4 players in 2009 (Abriami, Laws , Cogong & Demps )
If these players had progresses as 2-3 year players should and could remain healthy and even get on the field, then maybe they could have overcome the loss of JJ and some injuries, but put these “MIA”
players for almost all season and it’s actually remarkable the Eagles did as well as they did..

Paulman – defense was poor due to Hobbs, Hanson and Gaithier? Sometimes I wonder if you work for Eagles. You need to stop overvaluaing talent on this team. Hobbs, Hanson and Gaithier aren’t starters and difference makers in this league. Hobbs may have started in NE but they were desperate for CBs. Besides Cole, Djax, Maclin, Celek who do we have that can be called a damn good player and difference maker? We need major infusion of talent especially on defense. Whiel Reid hit on some good players, he has been pathetic in drafting, especially drafting offensive linemen.

Give it a year ReidSucks- Lets see what this new team looks like. The only draft I will kill reid for is when he drafted Donovan when he could have had all of the saints picks and possibly still gotten Donovan a couple slots down. Since then he has done a decent job of drafting and the last couple years have been pretty good. Celek, Jackson, Maclin and Kolb. Those 4 guys are all 1st round talent but only one was actually taken in the first. This means the eagles were able to get a-lot of value and players they liked.

The birds build through the draft and season with free agents. Over the last 11 years they have been pretty darn successful.

To ReidS
For the Eagles to Finish at 11-5 last season, their defense could not have been all that bad,
but by the time the end of the season rolled on, and the cumulaltive injuries started to add up with the lack of Contribution from the 4 players I already mentioned, then that puts more a stress of the depth which finally gave out by late season whitwashes to the Cowboys..When Hobbs,Hanson,Gaither are used as back-ups and for quality depth, then the Defense is looking strong, but due to the many injuries, susupensions, then these players had to step up and be starters and then they got hurt which really tested the depth (Or the lack there of) of this Eagle Defense…
Do I have to explain everything to you….
