Transition To Kolb Will Mean Purer West Coast Offense

It’s going to be Kevin Kolb hitting DeSean Jackson on an eight-yard slant route on one play, then Kolb will go to tight end Brent Celek on a six or seven-yard option route across the middle.

It will closely resemble what legendary 49er coach Bill Walsh design years ago for his talented San Francisco squad.

There’s no doubt that after listening to Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg yesterday, I couldn’t help but think that the Birds are going to be a offense truer to their west coast roots.

Mornhinweg talked about the different strengths of former quarterback Donovan McNabb and the team’s new signal caller Kevin Kolb, then talked about how he always tried to tailor the offense to what his quarterback did best.

“There’s no question Donovan had one of the stronger arms of all time,”¬†Mornhinweg said yesterday. “He could make the brilliant play. Kolb is very consistent, he handles two or three play selections very well (and is) typically very accurate. He is athletic … but he doesn’t have the athleticism that Donovan has.”

Mornhinweg has been through this process in the past when he transitioned the Niners offense from Steve Young to Jeff Garcia.  Both of those quarterbacks were athletic but Young seemed to ball more on time, while Garcia preferred to throw the ball on the run.

They’re going to continue to get the ball downfield to Jackson and second-year speedster Jeremy Maclin, but you’re going to see a lot more drives of ten to fifteen plays, as Mornhinweg and Andy Reid tailor the offense to fit Kolb.

Last year the Eagles led the league in long pass plays for touchdowns.¬†¬† McNabb’s strength was throwing the ball downfield, so Mornhinweg let him do it as much as he could.

The new emphasis is going to require that the team be consistent and stay away from penalties and mistakes.  Third down execution will be crucial, which will again require that they stay away from penalites and mistakes.

Mornhinweg did a little teaching session at the end of his news conference and talked about how Kolb’s success will depend on the play of the defense, special teams as well as the offensive line, running backs and wide receivers.

Sustaining drives is going to be the key for success for this new Eagle offense & QB Kolb,
no doubt, he doesn’t have the arm strength to throw the ball 60 yards in the Air like McNAbb doesn and have those short 2-3 play drives that would occur.. This new offfense with Kolb at the helm will be more methodical, more short-intermediate passes, hopefully more running the ball and more screens,& passes to the Eagles RB’s out of the backfield which McNabb & Co. got away from a little the last couple of seasons with the emergence of D-Jax and having Westbrook hurt often.
The key to sustaining drivers is very clear.. Stay away from negative plays (sacks and penalties)
and get the ball out quick to your playmakers, but you still have to take some shots down the field a few times a game to keep the opposing teams Safeties’ honest and make them cover the entire field.

I like Jackson in space but the idea of his 165-lb. frame running slants scares me a bit.

Get ready fans for a long season. Reid have Jeff Garcia on speed dial in case this guy kolb end up like Most fans suspect….A dud. At least green bay had a strong armed Rogers out of the 1st round to replace the interception machine Favre Eagles regressed in arm strength and will have to result to a dink and dunk offence

Song, I believe that many fans have a strong opinion one way or the other, but I disagree that most fans expect Kolb to be a failure. Personally, I have a wait-and-see approach. I haven’t seen enough of Kolb to have a strong opinion. He looked terrible against Baltimore then looked very good in relief last year. Obviously, 2 or 3 games won’t define his career. Based on last year, I’m cautiously optimistic.

SONGSRME2….sooo now we know that your word means nothing. What happened to that last post “this will be my last post”? Bullshit…just like everything else you say.

FYI- most fans don’t think Kolb will be a dud. In fact, most fans of OTHER teams don’t even think that..

Rodgers was drafted 24th overall. Kolb was drafted 36th overall. So saying he was a 1st round draft pick holds no weight becuase being drafted 36th is almost like the 1st round.

Arm strength is only one component of a QB. Yes, we regressed in arm strength. But we gained in accuracy and release time. (two key components of the WCO). You have to state the gains along with the loses.

Please do us all a favor and just leave. Leave the city, the team and this site becuase you obviously have taken everything this franchise has done personally. But as a TRUE FAN of the team, there is no room for you as a Philadelphia Eagle fan. Your negativity, clueless uneducated posts and constant bagering of the team is an example of a disgruntled fan who finds anything to complain about. As a fan, it is ok to display displeasure with the team for some things they do. But as a FAN you have to talk about the things that are being done right as well. You have to be fair in your assesment of the team, or you become a bigot. And we don’t have room for those here in Philadelphia.

Please as you posted a number of times, make this your last post…stop making people respond to your posts and stop acting like this is the worst franchise in the history of sports…we are tired of you and your posts so again from the TRUE FANS of Philadelphia…good riddance, we were glad to have you as a fan for so long…but as respectfully as possible….get the fuck out of here!!

10 to 15 play drives will be very nice for our new defense, the less they are on the field the better.

Not only does it keep the defense off the field, but more importantly it doesn’t give the other team the ball back quickly.

You can be up 21-7 in the 4th quarter, but if the other teams scores a td then your offense has to be able to run time off the clock with a longer drive. Too many times i’ve seen this team give the ball right back after a 3 and out.

EB2, ignore him, if you reply you are feeding the trolls and they will never go away. No responses works better. Just an opinion, not telling you what to do…

Sustained drives will allow the defense time to A: Rest and B: Make Adjustments. How can you make an adjustment if your offense is off the field before you can even review what happened on the last defensive series. 2-3 play scoring drives aren’t bad but they give no time for coaching just like 3 and outs and turnovers. Good teams can both quick strike and sustain drives.

This guy Kolb couldn’t carry Vicks Jock strap yet they committed to this bum. Can’t wait to week 5 when the spin machine can’t spin, and everybody see the obvious. I want to see all these optimistic fans who are saying give kolb a chance when they’re 1-4. Desean Jackson will talk at this point and it will get very ugly, because dink and dunk numbers do not transfer into “DOLLARS”..He’ll wish he was under a long bomb of Mcnabb. Vick get ready

Dude, Vick stinks. He is less accurate than McNabb. Also, he won’t be able to stay on the field as he will take too many hits trying to run first. He is a less talented McNabb, and personally, I am ready for a QB who’s best trait is that he can throw the football. I don’t know how good he will be, but I know how good Vick could be and I’ll take my chances with Kolb.

I would rather long sustained drives that open up the long passing game to DeSean any day. Because when it came down to closer games, and they couldn’t get the long gainers, the offense was lost. McNabb was always at his best when he was spreading the ball around a la a truer form of the West Coast offense. There are a ton of weapons on this team for Kolb to use, and if teams want to stop the 8-10 yarders to Celek, Avant and Maclin, then they can burn them deep with Jackson. Wouldn’t you rather have defenses have to plan for multiple options on offense and not just the deep pass?
