Vick Not Happy Being Number Two, But He Can’t Do Much About It

Michael Vick had a decent weekend of practices, duing the Eagles just concluded minicamp.¬† He showed some of the “old Michael Vick’s” speed and threw some nice passes during the passing plays.

Vick flicked his wrist a few times and zipped darts outside to receivers near the sideline.

He threw a dart to DeSean Jackson in the back of the endzone in the red zone drills.  He got it there despite the crowd surrounding that area in the middle of the defense.

There’s no way he would have been able to get the throw in there without his gun of an arm.

Still the plays Vick makes with his legs that will again set him apart.¬† I saw him turn back on the jets this weekend.¬† He admits that he didn’t have the ability to explode from a standing position last year like the guy who electrified the league early in his career.

“To be honest, last year I thought I had it,” he said. “Mentally, I thought I had it. As a competitor, as an athlete, you always feel like you’re the greatest. But, in reality, I wasn’t there.”

He’s 10 times better, man! That just comes with getting back into the groove of things,” receiver Jeremy Maclin said to the South Jersey Courier Post. “Now he’s just comfortable again. The wheels are there and his confidence is getting back.”

Vick is working hard but deep down you know he doesn’t want to be here in the number two position but there’s nothing he can do about it right now.

“It’s different running with the two’s, Vick told the DelcoTimes.com.¬† “I never had to do that before.¬† Even when I got here last year I was running with the three’s but that was expected.¬† Now I’m running with the two’s and it’s full-time and this is my permanent job.¬† So it’s a different feel but at the same time what I say to myself is just try to get better as a quarterback.”

You can see that Vick is trying to say the right thing but he can hide his desire and belief that he should be starting somewhere in the National Football League.

All of the backup quarterbacks in the league would rather be starting some where else other than where they backing up, but the difference in Vick is that he’s led a team to the NFC Championship game and has made trips to the Pro Bowl.

Right after the season he talked about wanting to be traded to a team where he could start and went so far as to name the Carolina Panthers as the team he would like to play for.

For the most part, he’s put that type of talk on ice but you can still tell that backing up Kevin Kolb isn’t exactly what he’d like to be doing next season.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Eagles front office is willing to keep Vick around, knowing that the former number one pick in the draft could create more problems for Kolb, if the young quarterback gets off to a slow start.

I know you’ver heard that the most popular guy in every city is the backup quarterback, we can expect Vick’s popularity to head skyward

As things stand now, he’s got to bide his time and continue saying the right thing until he gets his wish.

“I’m just going to continue to get better, continue to work hard,” Vick said this past Friday. “That’s my role here. I just want to help this team win a championship.”

Whatever happens happens,”¬†Vick went on to say. “I can’t predict the future. All I can do is control what I can control and hopefully put myself in a position where maybe I can start in this league.”

There are some who say Vick can’t run the west coast offense.¬† I totally disagree.¬† He might not be able to run the offense in the same manner that Kolb does, but he could still be effective by using both his legs and his arm to move the football.

What do you think the should do with Vick?

We will keep you posted on what’s going with Vick.

Keep cool Vick. If Kolb screws up out the gates , it’s yours buddy. I’m hoping that Kolb can do his thing and move us in a positive direction but if he doesn’t, it’s Vick time. Go Eagles.

That Phillies game last nite in the 4th inning was the best baseball I’ve ever seen. Santana looked like he was gonna cry. That was great stuff!

Vick turns 30 next month. I can’t imagine him ever being the Old Vick. He’s got to be anxious in that 2 spot at his age. If he still has those jets though, he should be fine for another team next year.

Vick’s a proven pro bowler, #1 pick, A stronger arm than Kolb, and if he was in a wheel chair would still be more athletic. Reid do your job and coach Vick up and your team will have minimum drop off. This married to kolb thing is going to kill the team. They should have made it an open competition, and by not doing so this locker room will be divided. If the team see Kolb struggling while they’re giving their all, and the team is losing, the players will start questioning the coaches. Why not put in the proven guy who have won games in this league? This Kolb better be everything they’re spinning, because if he’s not…….This season will point to serious “Front Office deficiencies”. If they want to pull this young team together they should put a proven leader at the helm. Vick should be starting…He lead playoff teams almost single handedly!!!! Garcia should be signed s an emergency backup and Kolb should be holding the clipboard. Is his growing pains worth another wasted season?

They should find some ways to use Vick this year. He is still a playmaker and can be utilized for something. The people that think he should start over Kolb or they should make it a competition, be careful what you ask for. If the guy works hard he just might be a decent starting QB for some other team next year.

I think the eagles should never had given kolb the qb. He should’ve had to earn it. I think we would win more games with vick starting over kolb. I would rather aj feely start over kolb because he has a stronger arm. We have two of the faster receivers in the NFL who can get behind safties. Will kolb be able to get the ball 40-50 yards downfield. Also he get credit for being accurate but throws more ints than td’s. You can win w/o having the strongest arm but you can’t win with turnovers. According to g kolb’s still throwing int’s in practice. Although people complained mcnabb threw ball too hard we will know see the opposite. Kolb has no zip on the ball which allows the defender more time to break on the ball and make big plays. The bigger problem will be when djack and maclin start hinting they want vick.

michael vick had a terrible completion percentage before he went to prison, why would anyone think that he would improve after a 2 year layoff and a year on the bench??

my guess is that there isn’t anyone in the league that believes he can get the job done either from the lack of any trade interest.

fraudsong go root for your new teams…the washington mcnabbs and the dallas cowgirls, those teams have fan sites where you can go and rant about the racist eagles, i’m sure that they would love to hear from you loser

You talk about completion percentage. What about wins and losses… Mainly playoffs wins and I do beleive vick does have playoff wins.(1st to win in green bay in playoffs). Not to mention this would be Vicks best receiving core he ever had in his career. I don’t think Andy was ever trying to trade vick after they traded mcnabb. Why would Andy trade vick with a big ? We have in kolb. Even when mcnabb was here the skill players were loving how vick throws the ball.. Djack and maclin both quoted talking about how good vick throws.

So there is some conspiracy to keep him down? If he were such a talent would teams desperate to win be looking to get him on their team?

I am not trying to bash Vick, he went to (3) pro-bowls and is (10) games over .500 W/L but he has a career 75 QB rating with a 54% completion rate. You combine that with the fact that he has not started a game in the NFL in over (3) years, why all the talk that he should be the QB to build around??

Greenfan, if Kolb turn out to be a bum then what? McNabb and Vick are proven winners in this league. What have you seen from Kolb to think he’ll do better? I’ll answer that..NOTHING!!! The fact is no one knows and that’s the problem. Betting the lives of these players and an organization a big question mark.

If we’re going to judge kolb, we must go by what we’ve seen when the bullets were flying. He was killed in the 1/2 against the Ravens which prompted the Eagles to immediatly go back to Mcnabb, Last year Kolb got a chance to show his worth by playing two games throwing 7 Interceptions and 4 Touchdowns, with one of the games against the horrendous Chiefs. When A J Feely was forced into action at least he showed something. This Kolb dude is a Bum, I can feel it. He’ll waste this season, so the Eagles should give him a 2 game leash. if he sucks….pull him and admit the error, that people miss on quarterbacks all the time.

So I am supposed to be down on Kolb because a fraud like you “feels it”?? Sorry man, I ain’t buying what you are selling.

Everybody on here gets it, you were in love with #5, and are upset now that he is gone. For all we know, you are actually Wilma writing these postings.

If we follow your reasoning, then there should never be a time when an organization recognizes that they have gone as far as they can with a player and they need to move on. Look, I was upset at the way the team handled BDawk last year, I railed against the FO and believed they had made a mistake. But I did not turn against the team. You clearly have and it is time you move on like you said, to a new team and new city. Good riddence.

McNabb had 11 years to bring a Championship to the Eagles and your able to make a decision about
a players future in only 2 games…You should open up a Tarrot Card/Palm Reading shop . Good grief…

That’s right Paul, 2 Games..Mcnabb showed immediately he was for real. You can not blame the lack of championships on Mcnabb when you have an organization that took damn near a decade to give him a legitimate weapon, refuse to run the ball, and last year was clearly out coached by Dallas’s coaching staff. Even the players in Dallas told the media the eagles lost had little to do with Mcnabb, because they knew the plays based on Reids playcalling trends. Question to anyone on this thing with a critical mind. Should the season be wasted if Kolb becomes an interception machine or should they stay with him if the team is losing consistently? How many games would be a good gage on Kolb before making a true assessment? If you say one year, that’s telling everyone this year is an experiment and theyre out of contention (wasted season). How many games before the hook? I say “2”, that gives the team an opportunity to rebound. How many games will you know if Kolb is the answer?

Evrybody blamng mcnabb for not winning the superbowl is nonsense .. Blame the eagles for winning the salary cap championship.. The last tens years we always had money to upgrade our offense and defense but never really did. Not to mention defense wins championships and we never had a championship caliber defense our defense is always hit or miss with the blitz.

To Still Singing the Same Old Song,
To me, It will take Kolb about 8-10 games for me to make a sound assesment, just like it will for most of the new players on the roster this year…Am I only going to give Tapp,Sims,Statcey Andrews,M Bell, C Ingram,M Jackson, and rookies B Graham,N Allen,T Lindley,Teo’, Ricky Sapp
2 games to prove that they are good players… Your argument is lame and childish…If you want to blame the Eagles fron Office and COaching about not supporting and surrounding McNabb with enought to win a Championship, then I guess it really doesn’t matter who is playing QB now does it….

Songsrme2, first I’m not a dmc hater. But to say he was for real immediately is reaching. When he came in in 99 he went 3-4 with a 49.1% comp, 8 td, 7 int for a 60.1 qb rating. If you take his first 9 games in 00 he was 5-4. So for his first 16 games he was 8-8. Yes they made the playoffs in 00 but there d gave up an avg of 14.4 points a game. Not shabby. Let’s see what our d gives us this year. I do agree with the weapon statement. But my question is how can people give dmc all the credit getting them to the playoffs without help, but when it came to 1-4 in nfc title games (4 in which we were favorites) and losing in the sb it’s he didn’t have enough weapons or the coaches. So they were the same circumstances in reg season and he could lift them but in nfc title and sb could not. How is that??

truth2power, our defense in 00 was 4th in points allowed, 01 – 2nd pts allowed, 02 – 2nd, 03 – 7th, 04 – tied for 2nd, 08 – 4th. And that’s in the nfl not nfc. All years we went to nfc title game. Yea you’re right that really sucks!

Paul, you’re not showing your low football I.Q. …There’s no other position that makes or break a team like the QB position, based on the mere fact the QB touch the ball every offensive snap. Because of the frequent substitutions and diverse packages it takes longer to evaluate those positons you mentioned. If Kolb throws 7 interceptions and 4 picks in the first 2 games with the team at an 0-2 record you would be crazy to think everything is alright, and suggest everyone need to wait until this kid becomes manning or brady……..APB!!!!!! No scout predicted this guy to be a Manning or Brady coming out of college. He don’t have the arm! But I’ll do you one better. I’ll back off just a little and see what happens after 8 games. If this guy is just another guy, we need to get together and blast this team, because I think the lack of championships falls on the fans too. The organizaion know we’ll support no matter what, so they continue to short change the fan base by not going the extra mile even when they have the money to get this city over the hump. We become over optimistic and at the end of the season, we’re in bed with the television, and radio shut off, disappointed after a shellacking like the one the cowboys put on us last year. Yet, we’re here like nothing happened. As far as I’m concerned nothing changed. This is the day after our asses were kicked. The Draft didn’t change nothing, free agency didn’t change nothing, signing Kolb didn’t change nothing. Until we take this attitude this team will continue to use the spin machine that suggests it’s alright to live in mediocrity.

All right, all right let’s all stop crying. Blame 5 for not being favorite, blame him for neglecting what made him a treat to defenses, blame him for not telling his coach give me control of the team when the game is on the line. But also make one thing clear, He is not solely responsible for them not winning the SB. In all four failed NFC Championship Game, and the Superbowl our great defense forgot to show up. That being said. It’s over. 5’s a Redskin now. The focus must be on the leaders of the team in the FO now doing whatever it takes to ensure that they put a team on the field that is ready for the rest of league. The defense is the team’s biggest weakness and I simply don’t believer they have fixed all the issues. There is enough talent on the team offensively that Kobb doesn’t have to do that much. (ref. Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer) Note: Even though the Saints had a great offense, they needed their defense to show up when it counted and show up they did throughout the entire playoffs.

I think you need to get out a little bit more Songs.
If you don’t think the direction of this Franchise has changed after this off-season, then I don’t know what else I or anyone could say make you see things are different … Will they be better, No one knows for sure, but I like the direction they are moving towards instead of treading water with the same old, same old approach… TIme will tell, and I am only 1 fan, but I will give them some time to show me that they are on the right track and with a roster turnover of about 25%-30% from last season’s squad, I will be patient and give them all a little time (8-10 games worth to see if they are on right track)

truth, agree on our wr. They were awful. I was just making a point about the d not being championship caliper. All the years I brought up were when we went to nfc title games and the worst was 7th in points allowed and twice 2nd. That’s not to shabby. Hopefully we can somehow get both to the point where we can depend on them when needed.

But yet, you just stated you hope this guy is a servicable as a journey quarterback. That hurts because Kolb have a better chance of being them than the guy they replaced him with. straightshot, I agree on all but 2 nfc champ games. The bucs game the d gave up 20 pts. Not good but not awful. The panthers game the d gave up 14 pts. That bucs game we had 7 pts in the first 2 min and scored 3 the rest of the way. Not good.
