How Much Will The Birds Utilize Michael Vick In The Offense?

Many have predicted that Eagles backup quarterback Michael Vick would be traded during the off season but it’s May and he’s still a Philadelphia Eagle.

It’s not out of the question that he will still be traded at some point but there’s also a good chance he could be here when the 2010 season starts.¬† If that’s the case then there are a number of questions that need to be answered.

Will Michael Vick be utilized in the Eagles version of the “Wildcat offense” during the upcoming season?¬† How many plays should they average having him on the field?

Will the use of Vick create any problems for the Eagles new quarterback Kevin Kolb and the young Birds offense in establishing a rhythm?

At the recently completed Eagles mini camp, Vick worked with the second team offense and I could see that he’s getting his speed back and that’s going to make it very difficult for the Eagles coaching staff not to find some way of getting him on the field.

Should they have him out there for 4-5 plays a game,  8-10 plays or possibly 12-15 plays?

It’s going to be very interesting to see how much the Birds decide to use Vick.¬†¬† I don’t think they want to make things harder for Kolb, but Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg were excited about problems Vick would create for a defense last year, so chances are they still see the advantages of using him.

Coming off the field on some third down and short situations or in the red zone could make things more difficult for Kolb.  It might help the team to utilize Vick in that fashion but how will it affect Kolb.

If I were in charge, I would use Vick 8 to 10 plays a game because it will give opposing defenses a lot to think about plus his speed will help him make plays to get first downs and touchdowns every time he goes on the field.

There aren’t many defensive ends or linebackers who will be able to stop him from scrambling.

What do you think about Vick?  Should they utilize him in the offense?  If so, how many plays should he be on the field for.

For the amount of money Vick is getting paid I find it hard to believe that he will not be on the field in some form of fashion. Personally I think the QB position should be an open competition between him and Kolb this summer but obviously thats just my opinion. People forget that this kid was the most electrifying player in the league for a couple of years.

I find it hard to believe that he has lost it all. And for those who talk about Vick’s completion % please understand that he played with a bunch of lame receivers for most of his career just like McNabb. Crumpler was his best receiver during those years and Roddy was young and wasnt’ the player that he is now. I would love to see him throw a few bombs to DJax…. Just saying

put the best player son the field, if he earns a spot then he should play plain and simple. i think utilize and maximizing all the skill this team has is essential to success this year. this team is going to need to scratch and claw to get 11 wins.

Who Cares, Send 7 out of town for a box of doughnuts. If I had done anything like he did I would never get to work in my field again. It is disgusting to see him in an eagles uniform. I believe in forgiveness but also in consequences. How can we as a society get rid of great leaders in millitary, law enforcement, education, ect ect.. for transgressions like DUI’s yet I am supposed to be happy about an Ex Con on my team. Goodell should never allow any of these guys back in the league PERIOD. Goodell you are the one tarneshing the shield of the NFL because you will not keep the garbage out.

I do believe they will utilize Vick more and I think they should take advantage of him while he’s here..
I would like him to run a complete series each half and then come in for some red-zone,eagle-cat,
short-yard situations to keep other teams Defenses on their toes and make them have to prepare for both he and Kolb.. I could say 12-15 plays a game.
Kolb is obvioulsy the starter for 2010 and beyond, but your paying Vick who can still be effective so why not use him (since he will gone after 2010 anyways) and this would also take some pressure off of Kolb who can watch from the sidelines whioch Vick is in to see what the other teams defense is doing and get a better pesepctive.. A win-win situation if handled correctly..

They need to use him more especially if his he much faster than last year. His skill set would be great to keep opposing defenses off balanced. And this is Philadelphia where the bo birds live. If Kolb stinks it up a couple games a bunch of knuckle heads will be calling for Vick. And they will do it more especially if he is even 80 percent as fast as he used to be. Vick can’t run the offense but he can make plays and win games.

how can you say “I believe in forgiveness but also in consequences”. Vick went to jail and he went bankrupt. He paid his debt to society. I think he suffered enough consequences personally. What else do you want the man to do?

And why do people continue to compare their job/career with a player’s career in professional sports. That’s incomprehensive b/c like it or not if you are a gifted athlete you’ll be afforded second chances. Something that the Average Joe doesn’t have. Thats just how the world works.

@ Keep 5 and that is what is totaly wrong. Second chances for some and not others. Talent does not trump character and should not. Otherwise the message every kid in this counrty receives is that all they have to do is get good a ball and to hell with school because they can get away with what ever and laugh at the suckers. The truth is though that so few of the kids with this mind set will ever make it and so they go on to become embittered counter culturalists perpetuating a hatred for greater society and therefore costing the average joe(s) tons of money every year.

@regal you’re right but thats the society we live in. And its not just with pro athletes. Its with politicians or anyone with money and/or high positions. How many politicians have messed up but got second chances? I don’t condone what Vick did but at the same time I think he did his time. He went through the process of the judicial system and now he’s trying to prove that he’s a changed man. Whether he’s changed or not, for now, maybe those same counter culturalists you speak about can look to him and try not to make the same mistakes he did.

Vick only has value if he really can run again. If that’s the case, I have no problem if he comes on the field in the red zone. Let him run and take a few hits if it gets us some more first downs.

I want to see Kolb make good throws on third down to convert first downs. He has to get comfortable in the offense this year and I’m willing to swallow some mistakes. The red zone and/or the occasional series with Vick running is ok.

This year is about Kolb, not showcasing Vick for his next team.

12-15 plays or more is going to be necessary to keep the deep ball threat an active part the offensive strategy for defenses.

It all depends on Kolb if he turns out to be Aaron Rodgers then Vick only gets 5 to 8 plays a game if he stinks up the joint then hello platooning QB’s

They will definitely put Vick to use this year if he has his speed back. Why the heck not? Think of him as a RB that can legitimately throw. I don’t who the starting QB is, that is a good threat to have right there.

Is he getting his speed back or are the defensive players slow?

There’s really no extra preparation against kolb..he’s regular pocket passer, and in that case you defense the scheme. Everyone knows he dont have a arm, so mid to press coverage will be the norm. He don’t have escapability, but on the other hand….the pro bowl once electrifying Vick have escapability which will allow the receivers to get free, and he have a cannon for an arm to get the ball there. If Kolb was black this would definately be an open competition. No doubt….
