What Are Acceptable Numbers For Kolb And The Eagles In 2010?

The Eagles 2010 season begins and ends with new starting quarterback Kevin Kolb.¬† If he plays well then it doesn’t matter what Donovan McNabb does in Washington.¬† If he doesn’t play well and McNabb takes the Redskins to the playoffs, then the Eagles front office will face much criticism.

I’m sure that the Birds front office took a close look at¬† a number of young quarterbacks who got the chance to sit, watch and learn their offensive systems before being thrust into starting jobs.¬† In the last few years a number of young quarterbacks have stepped into starting jobs and excelled immediately.

Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay sat the bench behind future Hall of Famer, Brett Favre for three years, then took over as the starter in 2008 and put up some big numbers in that first year.

He completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 4038 yards with 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.  His quarterback rating was 93.8.  The Packers finished the season 6-10 and out of the playoffs.

Phillip Rivers of the Chargers sat the bench behind Pro Bowler Drew Brees for two years in San Diego, then he took over as the starter in 2006 and put together some solid performances.

He was in a much more run-oriented offense than Rodgers with LaDainain Tomlinson still being the focal point of the offense and at the top of his game.  Rivers completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 3388 yards with 22 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.  His quarterback rating was 92.0 even.

San Diego was the one of the best teams in football with a 14-2 record as the number-one seeded team for the playoffs but they bowed out of the AFC playoffs with a  24-21 loss to the New England Patriots.

Tony Romo of the Cowboys became the team’s starting quarterback in 2006 and sitting and watching for three years.¬† He started 10 games and threw for 2903 yards with a 65.3 completion percentage.¬† Romo threw 19 touchdowns with 13 interceptions and he had a quarterback rating of 95.1.

The Cowboys had a 9-7 record and lost their Wildcard round playoff game to the Seahawks, when Romo dropped the snap in his role as the holder for field goal attempts.

Kolb should be able to put together some solid if not outstanding performances with the talent he’ll be playing alongside.¬† I think a completion percentage above 60%, with 25 touchdown passes and less than 15 interceptions would be a positive.¬†¬† His quarterback rating needs to be above 90.

Kolb must focus on protecting the football and not committing turnovers.¬† He’ll have to carry the offense because you know they’re not going to run the ball very much, but he’ll have to do it without throwing costly interceptions.

Despite the importance of his passing stats, the key numbers for the former Houston Cougar will be the team’s win loss record.¬† Rivers and Romo’s teams made the playoffs but Rodgers’ Packers finished with only a 6-10 record.

Kolb needs to lead this team to at least a 9-7 finish for Eagles fans to be able to look at this year as a positive.   An 8-8 record would be considered okay but not a positive.

If the team is 9-7 or better, they’ll have a shot at the playoffs and be well on their way to success in the future.¬† A winning record is something they can build on.¬†¬† Finding ways to win football games is Kolb’s main job.

What would you see as acceptable numbers for Kolb and the Eagles in 2010?

If the line can give him some protection, I would believe a 60% completion percentage and 90 qb rating along with a 9-7 W/L record would be acceptable. Understanding that it takes more than just one player to win or lose a game.

With the trade of Donovan there are plenty of people lining up to compare the two head to head. Hell, there are already too many on this site hating on Kolb before he even starts the season. If those people want to be fair, why not compare Kolb to McNabbs 1st full season (2000), 58% passing percentage, 78 qb rating and 3300 total passing yards. The team was 11-5, so that is a pretty tough to beat with the current strength of the NFC East.

Bottom line, those who want to hate him (and already do) will find a stat to point at, and those who want to be optimistic will find their stat to point to, so what does it matter. I tend to be more optimistic to see what he can do with this young group of recievers, but there is still alot that can happen between now and the first game of the season.

4100 yards passing…32 TDs..12 ints..anything less, would be uncivilized. Also wins Super Bowl..Gets keys to the city..begins dating Jennifer Aniston..Fixes the oil leak in the Gulf and makes the Pro Bowl. That might make us happy for a little bit.

Paulman’s call for QB Kolb for 2010 Season
Plays 3 games passing for 685 yards with 6 TD’s and 2 Interceptions leading Eagles to 3-0 Record,
Unfortunately, Kolb gets injured at the beginning of 4th Game on a cheap shot by Albert Haynesworth
of the Redskins, suffering a severe concussion, plus a broken Collarbone and Elbow thus ending his
season and cutting his career short… M Kafka comes in to lead the Eagle to 2 more wins for the remainder of the Season (since Vick gets released the week before after another off-the-field incident that shows him on multiple video-tapes buying and selling “Tusks from Elephants” from Africa Wildlife camps to wealthy Middle-East Oil families)
As if the 2010 Season couldn’t get worse….. Hobbs reinjures neck and retires, Ingram reinjures Left Knee and MLB S Bradley tears ACL again putting them all out for the season and their careers.
One positive note is the LG T Herremans proposes to Cheerleader “Lulu” who choose a Wedding Date of Super Bowl Sunday in Dallas,Tx….

That’s what I was hoping my boss would tell me… ha
On a more realitstic note,
I think Kolb will do well and progress nicely as the season goes along…
I expect the Eagles to win 8-9 games and compete for a wildcard spot which will be doubful due to their overall record.. I think Kolb ends up with a 56-58 % completion rate with about 25 TD’s abd 16 Int’s. I do not wish any injuries to any player (the Eagles have had their fair share the last few seasons and I think the Defense will play well down the stretch after a shaky start… The Eagles have an outside shot of a 4-0 start if they come out of the gates blazing and healthy..If they start off season 2-2 or worse, it will be a long season.

Bottom line Philly Will,
McNabb would most likley not add to the win total of this current Eagle team with it’s defense in a
obvious transition and many new, younger players and new coaches on that side of the ball..
McNabb is beyond the point of winning games by himself anymore and outting a team on his back
(and has been for a few years now) Let him play in Washington and win 7-9 games for them this season with a old, aging roster that will be down in the bottom 1/3 of the NFL for the next 3 years or so…
Meanwhile, I am looking forward to Kolb’s “Mom” starring in ther new 2010 new Campbell Chunky Soup
commercials that come out this fall….

yes this is also my point but ur failing to read between the lines
with the same team in tact and d5 9-7 gets em traded
9-7 gets em cut
9-7 has ppl calling 610 all day blasting him
9-7 he wouldnt even finish the yr

so i ask u mr pman who knows everything

I don’t really care about personal stats…bottom line if the team has less than 11 wins (last year’s record) this experiment will be an abject failure in my eyes and finally everyone will be forced to accept that the Eagles organization is “Rebuilding” and probably doing a poor job of it. I do expect Kolb to throw close to or probably more than 20 interceptions though and I also expect a lot of people to make a lot of excuses for the high number of interceptions he throws.

My personal expectations are that the team will win 4 games…I don’t even know if they will beat the Lions as that team looks like it might finally be on the upswing.

To PW,
the Giants,Panthers,Redskins Bears,Broncos,Falcons all under-achieved last years that helped the Eagles get to their 11 wins..The Division and Conference are stronger this yearsso just because the
Win total doesn’t match last years record doesn’t mean that they are any better/worse as a team…
Let’s see how they finish for the Eagles fizzled late last season and were manhandled all over the field by the Cowboys in those final 2 games…Yes, J Jackson did not play, but the whole entire team, coaching staff looked like a Pee-Wee-Hermann Football squad during those 2 games.

Why rationalize? The front office, of which I am rarely a fan, made a statement 2 years ago regarding “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity”….The common belief was that the changes could either be the coach or the qb. I have stated previously that I believed it should have been Reid that was let go, the FO chose to re-sign big red during the season, thus it was the qb left to provide the change. I guess this is where you assign your racist conspiracy theory. I say that they needed to make a change, #5 had already made statements to alienate his teamates (remember the “our youth showed today” comments?) and going into another season was not an option.

I just don’t get the level of hysterical support that some have about the old qb. It is not like in recent history that there have not been a number of rookie or near rookie qb’s can have had great success, just look at Flacco, Ryan, Rothelsberger, Rogers even Brady.

I know, don’t twist facts, just spout conspiracys…but it doesn’t matter either way. Your man isn’t coming back, so either do as you have previously stated and become a redskins fan or at least wait until the first snap of pre-season to start bashing.

Eagles 2010 (9) Wins include
Packers,Lions,Jags,Bears,Titans,Texans and wins over Redksins,Giants,Cowboys
Eagles (7) losses are to 49ers,Colts,Vikings,Falcons,Redksins,Giants,Cowboys
9-7 Overall Record but not good enough to make playoffs. They will have to win the NFC East to make it to the 2010 playoffs and they didn’t win the NFC East last year w/McNabb at the helm nor will it happen this year w/Kolb running the Offense..
They will be poised to make a run at it in 2012 (after the strike year of 2011)

No with McNabb for a couple of reasons
He’s a 10 year Veteran as opposed to 1st year Starter
McNabb is a franchise paid type pf QB without the results of ever winning the big game…
He had his chance for the last 10-11 years and has failed to lead the team to the Glory Land and he is not the only one to blame.. Lots of players/coaches contributed to their lack of playoff sucess ove rthe years.. Time for new players and a new energy level and some new coaches. With the D in transition, a 1st year Starter at QB and their difficult schedule this year.. I think 9-10 is realistic and
attainable.. I do not think 11 + wins is reasonable but I do think they will be a better team late in the season than they were in 2009.. If D doesn’t improve, look for McDermott and DL coach Segrest get the Ax, If Offense & Team doesn’ t improve by 2011, look for Marty M & Coach A Reid to both be gone and Jon Gruden to be named Head Coach for the 2012 Season..

In my opinion anything less than the playoffs is unacceptable. Not because Kolb is supposed to be better running this offense but because I’m sick and tired of Andy Reid and Co. trying to tell us they’re not rebuilding and they are going for it all. Well if that’s the case, then that’s the standard I’ll hold them to. When we miss the playoffs this year, Banner will spin it as a transition year with a young QB when before the “transition year” they were acting like they weren’t going to miss a beat without McNabb. Personally, I expect Kolb to have some very good games and some poor ones. 25 TDs is hard to get though. I do think he’ll have a completion percentage over 60% but I also think he’ll throw a lot of INTs this year. But that’s not always a bad thing. Peyton Manning was a INT machine when he first came into the league. So if Kolb does throw a lot of them, it’s not the end of the world. 22 TDs and 16 INTs. I see no less than 7 wins and no more than 9. I see Kolb taking us to the playoffs next year so I’ll give him until then before I make a clear judgement on him. But like I said, it’s not acceptable if the coach and front office idiot want to make people think the team is “there”. This is “gold standard” so let’s see it.

the problem is with the whole thing, is that the philly media is putting the pressure on kolb when the pressure should be reid and banner. This team did not do a good job addressing any of the needs in free agency or the draft. Kolb needs to play well and i agree with G about where his numbers should in this offense with these players. The d is gonna be boom or bust. If anyone remembers the reason why aaron rodgers had the 6-10 record was because the d was bad for the pack that year. For the coaching staff i would say anything outside the playoffs is failure. Kolb in my eyes just needs to put up decent numbers and display growth.

Nice to see you step in, G. For the most part, we have some pretty good dialogue. However, we can sometimes lack civility.

My expectations of Kolb are largely dependent on Reid’s play calling. If he continues to pass more than 60%, I don’t expect Kolb to have a great year. In fact, I’ll be happy if Kolb just survives. He’s either got to show some elusiveness or the line must improve. It doesn’t matter how quickly you can get the ball out if the defensive line is on top of you before you set up, as was often the case with McNabb. I believe this was the cause for so many McNabb injuries.

McNabb was credited with “extending” plays, but he actually “revived” plays that were already dead with keen instincts for escaping the pass rush. Of course, that same talent often had him hold the ball too long and lose yardage at key times during the game.

If defenses are still able to predict our plays, I think it will hurt Kolb considerably. I’ve always believed that Andy was the bigger problem of the two, between he and McNabb. Since his first year, Reid missed the obvious, i.e., need for receivers, linebackers, etc., but I believe his greatest fault has been his play calling. He seemed to change at the beginning of last season, but reverted to his old ways by season’s end.

#1) Fire DL Coach Rory Segrest and replace him with a real Defensive LIneman (maybe even have
a Hugh Douglas as a coach in training.
#2) draft more Cb’s in the early rounds… While trading down from the 3rd Rd and reaching for selections DE Teo,QB M Kafka, TE C Harbor all a round too soon, they could have selected another CB who be groomed a starter by 2011/2012 or so…

As far as I’m concerned it’s simple..the personnel moves that have been made between this year and last year have been labeled, by various people, “Addition by Subtraction.” Either that’s what it is or it’s not, it’s black and white from that point forward…you either win the same number of games you’ve already won or more since the team is now “Improved” or you don’t and the real label of “Subtraction by Subtraction” must be applied.

nothing less than than the numbers Mcnabb put up last year will be acceptable. We expect the quarterback position to be better. We expect the record to be better and we expect them to go further in the playoffs or get a Superbowl….Anything less is unacceptable.

You don’t trade players in an effort to downgrade the team so, Kolb or this organization does not get a”wait and see” pass. Kolb is better than Mcnabb, at least that’s what the organization think or they would not have traded Mcnabb to a division rival. An improved quarterback translates into an improved team…Period. You can’t have it both ways and claim it was time for Mcnabb to go, yet plug in an inadequate replacement. We expect better numbers from the quarterback position as well as a Superbowl run. If they do not achieve that this year…Kolb and Reid should be replaced..Get Cowher and a good GM…and start building with a top pedigree QB from the draft next year or make a play for Rothlesberger . This defense can be much improved under Cowher…After that the Eagles fever can begin……Kolb have this year to prove he was ready to replace Mcnabb. Not 2 years from now…..THIS YEAR OR CHANGE!
