Kolb’s Two Starts A Year Ago Don’t Answer The Questions In His Future

Everybody’s trying to figure out how good Kevin Kolb is going to be by going through the two games he started a year ago, but I don’t see how you can figure out what’s ahead for the young quarterback by looking at those two contests.

Of course on one-side you have the McNabb defenders and on the other side you have the McNabb haters who think they already know that Kolb is going to be either a Hall of Famer or terrible bust.

These statements are more about the fan’s feelings toward McNabb than their knowledge of Kolb’s future.

In his two starts a year ago, they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champs and they beat a Kansas City Chiefs team which would win a grand total of four contests.¬† Looking back there wasn’t much of a surprise in the way those games turned out.

Kolb was 31 of 52 passing while throwing for 374 yards with 3 interceptions as the Birds were blown out by a 48-22 score by the Saints.   The young quarterback threw the ball well but he turned the ball over three times with the game on the line.

The 2010 season is going to come down to whether Kolb can avoid making the costly mistake.  Yes, he gets rid of the ball quickly and most of the time his throws are on the money, but let the ball go so quick could make him prone to throwing interceptions.

He can’t continue to make the mistake he made on the first offensive play that the Eagles had in the second half of last year’s Saints game.

With the Eagles trailing 24-13 and possessing the ball on their own 23 yard line, Kolb telegraphed a pass to his right flat and it was picked off by a Saints linebacker.  A few plays later, the Saints had taken a 31-13 lead and the game was over for all intents and purposes.

He threw for a lot of yardage after that but the New Orleans defense was playing a bend but don’t break style and they weren’t concerned about giving up yardage.

In the Kansas City game with his wide receivers running around wide open and no pass rush pressure on him, he sliced up the Chiefs like a butcher slicing up some filet mignon.

He completed 24 of 36 passes for 327 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. It was the first time in NFL history that a quarterback threw for over 300 yards in his first two starts.

There will be a few games in the upcoming season where Kolb will be able to have target practice but most of the games will be tight and a turnover here or a turnover there will mean their downfall.

Kolb will have to move the offense, put the ball in the end zone but stay away from the costly mistake.¬†¬† It’s obvious he can run the offense.¬† We saw that A.J. Feeley can run the offense but he also turns the ball over too much.¬† Kolb has a stronger arm than Feeley, which should allow him to complete passes that Feeley can’t.

Some of you are laughing at Feeley but remember how he scared the undefeated New England Patriots a few years back.¬† Feeley ran the offense but he couldn’t stay away from the costly interception, so he’s proved to be nothing but a backup.

Like Kolb will be doing Feeley threw the ball early before the receivers came out of their breaks, but he couldn’t stay away from the costly mistakes.

You risk throwing more interceptions when you throw the ball early.¬† McNabb would look and look and look before letting it go.¬† His arm was strong enough to do that, but it also resulted in more sacks, but he’s got the lowest interception to attempted throw percentage in the history of the game.¬† He would probably take more chances if he was a more accurate passer.

McNabb is a very good quarterback but not a great one.¬† He’s got great arm strength and good judgment. He’s among the second tier of quarterbacks in the game today.

Tom Brady leads the top tier of quarterbacks in the game today.  Drew Brees is right there with him amongst the top tier of quarterbacks.  They all get rid of the ball early.  They have the necessary arm strength.  They have great accuracy.  They have great judgment and they can take their game up another notch in the playoffs and Super Bowl.

Brett Favre throws the ball early, has a strong arm like McNabb has great accuracy but his poor judgment and inability to take his game to another level in the playoffs has stopped him from being the best quarterback of All-time. He’s ended quite a few seasons for his teams with terrible interceptions.

I remember the awful pick he threw against the Eagles at the end of the 4th and 26 game.¬† What about the interception against the Giants at Lambeau Field to end the Packers’ playoff hopes.¬† Of course we all remember last year’s pick he threw a year ago.

Peyton Manning has the arm strength, accuracy and judgement which has made him the greatest regular season quarterback ever.¬† But for some reason, he’s a mediocre playoff quarterback with a winning percentage barely over 50% which means he lacks something inside.

Manning didn’t even play well in the one Super Bowl that he won.

Where will Kolb land when we are able to look at his body of work after a few seasons of starting?  Will he lead a team to a Super Bowl victory in his career?  Will he be able to consistently lead them to the playoffs?  Can he stay healthy despite being pounded by the monsters in the league?

His arm strength is okay, his accuracy is good but his judgment and abilty to lift his game up in the playoffs are unknown.

Kolb can run the offense but can he throw the ball early and do it nearly 40 times a game, against the good defenses in the NFC East, yet stay away from throwing too many costly interceptions.

I don’t know the answer to that question, yet.¬† Do you?

No one will know until Kolb suits up and plays in meanigful games…
We still won’t really know to about after his 1st season which I am sure will have some very good plays and very poor plays.. This is all part of the maturation process of an NFL player and especially at the QB postion… How many people were very critical of QB’s A Rodgers,P Rivers,J Flacco,M Ryan when they started and played in their 1st season…Now they all appear to be next top tier of QB’s for the next 8-10 years as the Brees,Mannings,Bradys,Farves,McNabbs get older and lose some of their skills and their bodies start breaking down…
The key as G noted is minimizing the negative plays (Int’s,Fumbles,Sacks) and as we are know and have seen over the years, younger players have a tendency to think they can make every plays and sometimes force the action instead of taking what the Defense is giving them.. IT’s about preparation, knowledge, maturity and have the mind-set of playing within a system that allows you options to get the bacl to your playmakers… Is this a guarantee for success..of course not, you still have to make the plays, but I think after watching Kolb for the last 3 years that he has the makeup,
the commitment and the ability to succeed as any other QB in the NFL has, and he has been in the same system since being drafted and has great weapons to work with in D-Jax,Maclin,Celek,etc.
Bottom line is that Orginizations,Coaches do all they can, to prepare young players to be able to have the opportunity to step up and be preoductive NFL Players… Kolb has a great opportunity in front of him and the chance to start out his Starting QB career in a very good position. The rest is up to him and his teammates and if your a true Eagle fan, you want to support Kolb to be succesful for if his play is good to very good, the Eagles have a better chance to get to and win a Super Bowl.
For all the naysayers about Kolb and this Eagle team, it is your right to be disappointed about no longer having McNabb,Westbrook,Andrews,Howard,Dawkins, etc, etc… but that’s living in the past and isn;t going to win anything moving forward.. It’s time to rally around this young team and watch them improve and get better as camp, preseason and finally the season comes.. Enjoy for this is the beginning of a new era and as a True Eagle Fan, I am excited about it …

G, he’s really a rookie so we are going to have to wait and see, two games does not a career make, I’m hoping he’s an Aaron Rodgers type, but God forbid he’s Bobby Hoying.

Wait and see; give Kolb time working through growing pains. If the OL doesn’t play well or the defense can’t stop teams and give the offense good field position, or key injuries hit again, or Andy can’t make necessary changes during the game, Montana with his best days wouldn’t get the Eagles into the playoffs in this division.

All the QB debate is null and void. The coach of this team never gets any blame for this teams failure. The predictable play calling, the pass ratio must be talked about. I would like to see a little more physical type offense with more running the football especially with a young QB.

Glad you injected some reality into the QB discussion here. There are some things we do know though:
1.) McNabb has either least interceptions or close to the least interceptions of any QB in the league.
-It’s highly unlikely Philadelphia will ever have a QB that throws as few interceptions over their career.-

2.) Kolb likes to throw to Celek A LOT.
-This could be problematic for a number of reasons, particular in terms of predictability against defenses.-

3.) Kolb does NOT have a strong arm, so 9-15 deep ball attempts per game is out. Short “Out Passes” also require a strong armed passer, so quite a few of those will be eliminated from game planning. Effective game planning for this QB will consist of mostly short passes (10 yards or less) in between the numbers, a lot of running the ball and the Wildcat to implement “Out Passing” and “Deep Passing.”

Butch – I see your points, and they’re really not new ones so I can’t fault you for pullingt them out of nowhere. But how are you so sure you have Kolb figured out at such an early stage? You’re judging a book by it’s cover and two pages of the first chapter. You could be right, but you’re making a bunch of assumptions.

I’m all for Kolb being the quarterback, but think the next 2 years are the litmus test for Andy Reid’s offense. The young Donovan required the defense to use a shadow on him and allowed him to use his great arm and create open space to move the ball. As Donovan and Reid seemed to abandon him running the ball, his inaccuracy issue became more appartent. TO required double teams and safeties to favor him, but could still get open, and Donovan had his only 30+ td season. I give him credit for it and people have been calling for more talent at wr ever since. Please note, TO is crazy, but was as good as any other wr the NFL has seen over the last 25 years.
Jim Johnson’s defense was the bigger reason for the Eagle’s great run in my opinion. When the defense didn’t create tunover in big games we lost as Garry has correctly stated.
We supposedly have a qb with the correct skill set for this offense. I think Kolb will move the ball, but do expect 16-18 interceptions this year. At the end of this season and Year 2 is when he should have shown if he can do it. I just hope an injury doesn’t push the great Kolb experiment back because the team hinges on him.
I think Kolb can do it because I remember Harbaugh made public comments expecting the Eagles to trade McNabb a few years back once he got to Baltimore. He felt Kolb was ready then, but stopped commenting on the Eagles businees before ruffling even more feathers back in Philadelphia.

If the Donovan had won 1 Super Bowl his statue would be on top of city hall and he could tell every critic (including myself) to shut the f*** up and look at his ring. 1 Super Bowl ring makes you king. It’s a shame it’s that black and white.

butch read your points above…agree with #1, Donovan was very careful to throw the ball where only his reciever had a chance to catch it. I would agree that it would be unlikely that Kolb would be as successful, but he did sit behind McNabb for 3 years and taught the same system from the same coaches. Only time will tell, but that was something the #5 was historically very good at.

I disagree completely with #2. If we just want to look at this team, #5 was most successful when he had his safethy valve in Chad Lewis. Hell, Lewis made the pro-bowl because he threw so much to him. I look at this as a positive.

#3. Pure arm strength, you will not find many stronger than Dmac. No aurgument. I believe that are looking to operate this offense with shorter, quicker passes and more YAC from DJax and Maclin.

Yes, Eagles fans can’t wait for the first big run, the first Celek YAC play, the first DJAX highlight play, or TD. But PW is looking forward to bad things happening to the Eagles for some reason. He’s not a troll from another city, just a guy with… uh… problems.

I think the type of defenses that teams will employ is a lot of 3-4 fronts versus Kolb stacking the middle of the field to take away the short intermediate routes and especially to the TE’s and or RB from the backfield.. Kolb and play calls will need to throw deep and early in games and in the season so teams don’t glog up the middle with LB’s or extra DB’s would be my guess..
Teams like the Packers,49ers,Cowboys,Redksins,and possibly the Titans and Jags will employ these type of Def/Schemes

P – you speak as if Dallas fans are happy with last season because they won superbowls back when only business executives had ‘celluar telephones’. I don’t know if you’re a baseball fan, but being a Phillies fan right now isn’t that fun – and frankly, the past two years of success doesn’t make it any better. And for the record – I hated the gold standard comment and don’t agree with it. I also think that mediocrity doesn’t apply to the birds. Greatness doesn’t either, but there’s a difference. You seem to have trouble seeing nuances between things.

For he record,
The 2010 Phillies are done, they will not make the post-season this year..
I have been raising issues about this club since Feb/March on deaf ears..Now it’s late July and they are actualyl playing worse then they were in May. Their stud acquisition (Doc Halliday has been getting hit hard and often since about Mid-May (outside of his Perfect game of course) .Hamels has pitched as well as he can but with little or no run support…Blanton and Kendrick are Home Run pitchers and Moyer isa good #5 pitcher but not a #3 pitcher.. Their Bullpen is in complete disarray and there bench is about the weakest in the MLB… I am now revising my final standings as
2nd/3rd Place and a 84-78 Record to a 3rd/4th place finish in the NL East and a 80-82 Overall Record.
ASmaro,MAnuel anmd many of the players have fallen aslepp at the wheel, the rest of the Division has improved, many teams in the NL have improved and Phils have taken a good step backwards..
The Front Office has lots of big decisions to make and needs to make them quick about the Phils Future..Do they trade OF Werth and get something for him before losing him to Free-Agency,do they move S Victorino instead who is cheaper but may have more interest, who becomes the Closer, will JA Happ ever be a big-league pitcher again.. do bench players Francisco, Gload,Dobbs have a future with the Phils.. what to do about Ibanez anad Moyer moving forward… lots of moves to think about..
