Kolb Takes Too Many Chances, Graham Shows Major Potential And Maclin Impresses

So far in training camp, Eagles new starting quarterback Kevin Kolb had been doing a great job of pulling the ball down, if there was nothing there.¬† Today he didn’t do a good job of it and he made some poor decisions and they resulted in interceptions.

I would forgive him for the pick by Ellis Hobbs because Hank Baskett didn’t run the best dig route and Hobbs ran it for him.¬† Hobbs read the route all the way and cut underneath Baskett when he went inside then picked it off.

Kolb shouldn’t have thrown it because there was no way in the world it was going to be completed.¬† This is what you get when the quarterback is letting the ball go early.

On another play in the afternoon workout, Kolb threw one up for grabs to tight end Brent Celek.   It was the kind of decision that will get this team beat.  It the kind of decision that Brett Favre has made too many times in his career.

Celek had a linebacker underneath him going down the middle.  Rookie safety, Nate Allen had his eye on Celek as he approached him and there was no way in the world, Kolb had any chance of getting the ball to his buddy.

The young quarterback was also under pressure from the pass rush, so he couldn’t step into the throw.¬† He threw it any way and it was wobbling and was picked off easily by Allen.¬† It’s the worst interception that Kolb has thrown all training camp.

Allen is doing a decent job at the weak safety spot.¬† I can see that he’s still thinking a split second too long as opposed to reacting.¬† I like where he’s at since it’s so early but he’s got a long way to go.

First round draft pick Brandon Graham has a serious burst off the corner and he’s got some power in his lower body which is something you would expect from a guy with his frame, but he should be able to get better and better as the season goes on.

He plays with some emotion and seems to have a tremendous motor and it seems like they might have their man in getting a serious pass rusher on the opposite side of Trent Cole.¬† I can’t say at this moment that he’ll be a great NFL pass rusher but he’s definitely got the potential.

This young man has tremendous body control for a guy his size.

Jeremy Maclin is headed toward a big year.¬† He runs his routes like a veteran and looks so much stronger and confident about what’s he’s doing.¬† Maclin has the hands, size, quickness and playmaking ability to make a big jump.

He seems very comfortable running routes over the middle, which is a big part of this offense.  I think Maclin will get the chance to catch more passes than Jackson even though DJax will likely have more yardage per catch.

Jason Avant contributed a number of his usual eye-popping one-handed catches.  He caught quite a few passes today since DeSean Jackson was out with the back spasms.

The Birds are still getting their money’s worth out of rookie Riley Cooper.¬† They’ve got him lining up all over the place from play to play.¬† This says he’s got a tremendous mastery of the playbook and the Eagles are looking for ways to get this young man on the field.

They finally got Asante Samuel to shut up.  He strained his hamstring and jumped on the cart and went into the training room.

It seems like Nate Allen is always getting his hands on the ball. I hope he continues to improve. Brandon Graham might end up being a real beast. We know a rookie DE can have an instant impact.

Good Stuff G,
I rather Kolb make some poor decisions now in camp where the coaches and him go over the film and coverages which will help prevent him from making bad plays as camp progresses and the season begins.. I think Graham,Cooper and Allen will all see the field a lot this season as Rookies…
I also see Teo/Scott/Harbor/Cheney & Coleman sticking to the 53 Man Roster and contributing on Special teams and getting on the field in certain situations…

Aiight Kolb, get it together. We want to see you do well coming out the gates; Don’t forget you got #7 breathing down your neck, and if you screw up the first 2 games, hit the bench pal, Big Vick to da rescue. Peace

I don’t think Kolb is a bum and I think he will work hard to correct his mistakes, misreads and study film and master other teams tendencies and work with coaches more than any QB that has ever played in Philadelphia…Does this guarantee success on the field, No it doesn’t, but I believe that the better prepared a player is, the easier it will be to have success at the NFL level, No one is going to out-work,this guy, Kolb is very driven and motivated to be a succesful NFL QB..

Paul you are tripping…..every qb is driven to be the best…..how many actually achieve that after being smacked in the mouth? The percentages is against him being a great QB..Every QB studies film. HEART..let’s see if he have heart when they can read the predictble plays and make something happen when the play breaks down. you better hope Michael Vick is ready to put this team on his back…another thing…I’ll lay double to whatever you put down that this team do not make it over .500 with Kolb starting…………… double…..put up or shut up.

I think we will all have to continue to wait and see. Some players learn from their mistakes, it just takes time and other never learn (see Brett Favre). I think he will get better, but I also think he will make some dumb throws in real games too. Just apart of being an NFL QB and growing and developing. I do expect him to make a dumb throw when the pocket is collapsing quickly and a DE has got a hold of his jersey. I don’t like it but expect it because Kolb wants to get the ball out and I do think he will make that throw instead of taking the sack. But it’s all up to how he bounces back from it. Will he do it for the duration of his career (let’s face it, some guys never get it) or will he learn to pull it down and take the sack. The study time is one thing but actually in the heat of the moment, players do something different. So we will have to see.

And fellas, Vick looks fast. I mean fast! He can’t run this offense like McNabb of Kolb but he can make big throws down the field and make plays with his legs. I see Vick getting a lot more time on the field with option plays and just straight up passing plays without gimmick.

Songsrme2,

So your telling me that players like Jemarcus Russell, R Leaf, T Marinovich, worked hard in the off-season to be a better QB in the NFL, even M Vick has publicy addmitted that he didn’t take his off-the field work serious enouigh when he was a younger players like watching film, going over teams tendencies and that he relied on his athletic insticts.
Songs, you just don’t get it do you… Winning and being Succesful at any Professional level is more about being an exceptional athlete, it’s about drive, perserverence and the will to succeed and put in hard work year after year and no,not every Professional Athlete has these traits..

vricchini….I saw it too (Joe’s vs Pro’s) and had the same thought….if Vick was throwing picks and looking that bad against those shmoes, how can all of the Kolb-haters on here keep screaming how #7 is the only hope for this team…he gives me about as much hope as Obama

This is all Pro’s no Joe’s. Look, all I want is W’s. If Kolb is the next great uhh..”hope”, great! fantastico! If not, like my older brother would say (even if Mcnabb was stinkin up the joint), sit his a – – on the bench – next man in. I could care less about giving him time to get it together. Brady, Roethlisberger, and other SB champs took over for pro bowl Qb’s and got the job done with SB’s. Thats what I want from Kolb out da gates. For me, 2-3 games at best to see if he’s the next best thing. If not, sit his a – – on the bench, next man in. I’m glad we got a proven pro-bowler in Vick who’s lickin his chops to be the general again. AR knows that as well, and may have struck gold if Kolb isn’t ready and Vick comes in and leads the troops to victory. Oh yeah… one more thing Green man, this aint no political site, go to Fox News for that. Lets not forgot who was the only senator who voted against the war, and; who led us in it. I see why they call you green. Stop hatin and support your president you “Twat-Tard”.

I agree with you fellas. I wasn’t for the move to Kolb but he’s our QB now and I’m rooting for him. But at the same time, I’m not willing to give him a full season to get it together when you have Vick right behind him. I think we all know Vick isn’t the best QB but he will win you games based of pure athleticism. He took Atlanta to the NFC championship and playoffs other years with garbage. With better weapons around maybe he’ll use them LOL. Anyhow, I’m not with the “give him time” argument for Kolb. He needs to be productive right out the gate. Period. This team has done nothing to earn “extra” time. As far as I’m concerned Reid should be on thin ice and Kolb shouldn’t be guaranteed to be the starter for the entire year IF he’s not playing well and you still think you have a shot to make the playoffs.
