Reid: “Everyone On The Offensive Side, We Need To Get Better”

The Eagles had a red zone drill yesterday and the defense clearly won it.  They also had a blitz drill yesterday and the defense won that.  The team’s offense just wasn’t on the same page.  The Eagles “O” has had some outstanding practices during this year’s training camp but yesterday wasn’t one of them.

Andy Reid got right to the point after the morning workout.

“The positive, I think, is the defense is playing well,” Reid said. “That’s a positive. Everyone on the offensive side, we need to get better. We continue to push through this and normally what you see is offenses come together a little bit later than defenses, if you do have a good defense.”

It’s still very early and defenses are usually ahead of the offense because the offensive side of the ball relies on timing.  It takes a week or two or three for a offense to get their timing down on most of their plays.

“You can’t have the interceptions, you can’t have the sacks, the quarterback’s running around way too much with the pressure he’s getting right there, so we’ve got to take care of that,” Reid said. “When they’re running the football they’re getting big yards there, so we’ve just go to get the throwing part of it down.”

At the beginning of practice in the red zone period, Kevin Kolb threw the ball early and off target, quite a few times.  They lined up three receivers to the left and sent Jason Avant into the corner of the end zone.  Avant was open for a split-second but Kolb threw the ball high over his head.  He seemed to rush his throw.

Kolb had to pull the ball down a few times and scramble which means there was no one open.  Reid and Marty Mornhinweg tried to line up big receivers Cornelius Ingram, Clay Harbor and Riley Cooper outside to get them in one-on-one situations.  It just wasn’t clicking.

They ran a few plays two times to get them right.

Kolb was able to get the ball to DeSean Jackson in one play when Jackson was matched up one-on-one with Stewart Bradley.  On another play he made a nice throw to Jason Avant.

Kolb would have been knocked out on the first play of the blitz period if it were a live drill and he weren’t wearing the red jersey.  Left defensive end Juqua Parker was turned loose and he had a free run at the young quarterback.

Kolb got rid of the ball on the next play but it was behind tight end Ingram.

During yesterday’s workout Kolb was picked off a couple of times.  One pick was made by Quintin Mikell and the other by Demetrius Patterson.

Center Nick Cole left the practice because his knee was bothering him, so Mike McGlynn jumped in there at the center posiition.  This could be a tremendous opportunity for McGlynn over the next few days because Cole is expected to miss a few days.

Hopefully the Birds offense has a better day later this morning.

They way this Eagle O/Line is playing and especially at the Guard and Center Positions,
I would expect Kolb/Vick to be flushed out quite a bit and have to throw on the run a lot which is not easy to do and limits using the entire field with the passing attack. This O/L will be the determing factor on whether the Eagles has a playoff team in 2010 and right now it’s not looking too good to me.

The o-line will be Andy’s “goof-up” of this season. Almost every season we go into the year with a clear need that is not addressed and the center is it. I’m sure he thought that Cole would be able to get it but he still should have drafted at the position to have another body in there. And then we’re about 2 years or more late to fulfill the need and by that time we’ll have another need that won’t be addressed and the cycle continue. I do think that he thought he had the right guys for the position but then that’s just bad evaluation.

The Eagles FO seen the molestation of our offensive line against Dallas the last 2 games of the season yet refused to address the problems….These things do not fix themselves and players don’t change that much. In saying that.. it’s ridiculous to think cole is a center after that debacle last year and it’s overly optimistic to think Jackson will return to form after major surgery, therefore the quarterback of the offensive line should have been priority number one for this team since the past have taught us…. if there’s a turnstile in the center of your line the offense can not run. Period. It doesnt matter who you have at the skill positions if the defense have a constant B-line to the QB, and the situation is perpetuated when you inject an inexperienced non mobile quarterback..At this point I feel sorry for Kolb because the deck is stacked against him and he’s been set up to fail.
It’s a shame because we may never find out how good he can be if he’s knocked around constantly and lose all confidence. That’s the truth

The o-line, combined with Reid’s predictable play-calling, could pose a serious problem. McNabb had incredible “escapability,” from which Reid benefited throughout his entire career. Often, defenses were in the backfield when the ball arrived, despite the fact we had all-pro tackles. It doesn’t matter how quickly you read defenses or how quickly you release the ball, if the defense is on top of you when the ball arrives.

Got to get more practice practice in dat redzone. Andy has got to work his usual magic in da redzone. Young guns need to stop shooting off their mouths and get busy in da redzone.

Andy do not have magic in the red zone….last year this was one of the worst red zone teams

Andy and Marty are supposed to be offensive geniouses and supposed to keep the defense off their game. I’m beginning to think that they should be renamed the Lobotomy Brothers.

Eagles Poll- How will the Eagles do in the Red Zone this season.
(1) Set an all-time record for touchdowns scored
(2) Set an NFC record for touchdowns scored
(3) Set an NFC East record for touchdowns scored.
(4) Score enough to make the SuperBowl
(4) Improve significantly

You know what? Fellas I’m starting come around and I am all for Cole being the starting center if Jackson is not ready. If Andy beleives in him…gosh darnit! We need to support the decisions because he have seen this guy in practice and knows he’s qualified. (You can inject the name of your choice to substitute Cole’s to get the point…….levon kirkland, blaine bishop, Reno mahe, demps, macho harris, sean jones, stacy andrews, hobbs, kolb) to name a few
