Gillies arrested for cocaine possession

The Cliff Lee trade just keeps looking better and better. Not only did the Phillies get three players from the Mariners who may never see the light of day in the majors, now we see that one of those “prospects” was arrested last night on drug charges. Tyson Gillies, 21, was arrested in Florida at 1:10 AM on felony cocaine possession charges.

Gillies was playing for Double-A Reading, but hasn’t been on the field in two months because of a hamstring injury. Let me take a guess what he was doing to fill the baseball void.

“We are aware that Tyson Gillies was arrested today on a drug possession charge arising out of out of an incident that is alleged to have occurred this past June,” assistant GM Chuck LeMar said. “Because this is an open criminal case, we will not comment further at this time.”

Gillies was hitting .238 with Reading this year, and this latest development just further highlights how truly awful the Lee deal was.

It must be some bad coke then if he’s only batting .238…
Back in the 80’s when I was doing the “Miami Vice” thing, I was batting like .700 in our Men’s Softball League and caught every fly ball out in Left-Field.. C’mon Tyson…

The “awful” Cliff Lee deal allowed us to land Roy Halladay. We win. Nuff said.

If you TRADE a top 6 pitcher in all of baseball and get absolutely NOTHING in return, you did NOT win!!! You lost bigtime. That just made the trade for Halladay all that more necessary, and as result the farm system was not replenished which does not possibly bode well for future.

Bottom line, Amaro had his heart on obtaining Hallady since last year..
When he got the opportunity, they got Halladay which meant Lee was expendable in their eyes since they were not going to keep both.. Fast Foward 6 months, now Amarao trades an up and comer SP
in JA Happ and others to acquire Roy Oswalt and will pay Oswalt similar $$$ tha it would have cost in keeping Lee to begin with
I would rather have a rotation of Hallday,Lee,Hamels,Blanton and Happ for the next couple of years

— we traded Lee in order to GET Halladay so what are you saying? Halladay is a better pitcher than Lee — period. His ability to pitch complete games is undeniable. Lee has good stuff, Halladay’s is better.

@Mancini — although Halladay, Lee, Hamels is a great lights out lineup, Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels can be just as great. Either way, we have a 3 starters that can carry us throughout the playoffs and into the World Series. I agree, we should have saved all the trouble and just kept Lee but oh well, things happen.

It will all depend on how the back end of the Bullpen performs,
Madson and Lidge are finally heatlhy, confident and in a nice rhythm. If they pitch as the have the last few weeks, they are in great shape, if they pitch like they did from earlier in the season, then they won’t go very far come playoff time..
