Eagles release Baskett

The Philadelphia Eagles have released WR Hank Baskett today, to make room for rookie running back Joique Bell. Bell was on the Buffalo Bills practice squad and agreed to terms with the club yesterday.

Baskett has mainly played on special teams this year and was a complete non-factor on offense.

As for Bell, he ran 27 times for 152 yards in the preseason, for a 5.6-yard average. That’s all well and good, but considering the depth chart in Buffalo, it’s safe to say those carries were against the backups of the backups.

I don’t know that carrying four wide receivers is all that hot of an idea, and I’d be curious what the Eagles plan is should someone get hurt. Call Baskett immediately knowing that he won’t get picked up? Call Kelley Washington?

In addition to these moves, the Eagles also released RB Martell Mallett and S Chip Vaughn from the practice squad.

Hell, bring Mike Quick down from the broadcast booth or grab Harold Carmichael out of the front office. I’m guessing either could beat Basket in a foot race, and both have better hands!

I will not miss Hank Basket (or his ho-bag wife).

And yea, Washington is a special team stud with a capital S! Never understood the Hank choice over Washington myself, but then again the Fat Man is usually right

He’ll probably be back pending no other team picks him up because Maclin and/or Jackson will probably get banged up sometime this year. I wonder if Baskett is calling McNabb to put in a good word for him. I mean Washington can’t do too much worst.

Give him time…..That makes since…doesn’t it make since?

Apparently Andy Reid doesn’t want to concede the season or “take a step back” like some of the idiots on here for a work in progress. Suck on that…… hard.

There’s a lot on “G’s” plate but he need a staff to be on breaking news and gameday threads….that alone will take all the business from watered down eagles page and the national media……I come here because “G” gives informative insight with truth before anyone else but I hate the fact I have to go other places instead OF HONEST BREAKING NEWS RIGHT HERE.

This site can be a monster since he actually played and is usually right on…but we need one stop shopping on gcobb.com

Vick is the starter…I think Reid just basically came to the conclusion that Vick is at least back to ProBowl form and will probably get better with more time. Basically Kolb got McNabbed again. lol.

Again, all of the controversy and fallout from this could have been avoided had Reid not been so hasty naming Kolb the instant starter with Vick already there having a year of learning and conditioning.

Anybody see highlights or know much about this Joique Bell kid?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGNMt1ZzJ3Q
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maJGf5asUVY
I’m not sure about the Walter Payton comparisons in this second video. And I really have no idea how good the competition was that he faced, but he sure is fun to watch. Watching him outrun people made me sadly think of Javhid Best against our D last week. This Bell won’t outrun all the NFL level players like he did at Wayne State. But it would be a great story if he came in and contributed. I hope this kid is smart enough to pick up enough on blocking, blitz protection, and catching that he can help this team. If not now, then as the year goes on. I wonder if he can play any special teams?

I wonder if Reid is actually NOT being stubborn and realizing that with this offensive line, and with Vick in there, that they can actually make some big plays in the run game. Maybe not against every team, but that they can count on it. Much like back in 2006 when you knew you could count on the o-line and westbrook that if you stuck with them, sooner or later they would break a long one.

I wonder also if he’s realizing that with this offensive line and maybe not being able to counter all the blitzes, that it just makes sense to go with Vick. People don’t realize this but Andy might be *saving* Kolb’s career with this move. Imagine if Kolb gets wrecked behind this offensive line and gets another concussion. Or a third one. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, but its a possibility with Kolb in there at QB. After their experiences with McNabb getting hurt they knew how important it was to have starting caliber backup QBs. And last year with Westbrook (I think his knee or leg was messed up too – can’t remember for sure) reinforced the concussion side of things. Frankly, I’d prefer to not have play Bradley next week. Let him rest another week and bring him back for the Redskins.

I forgot to mention, but it would be nice to see them bring in Kelly Washington. He could help make plays on special teams. Seems like a no-brainer. Not sure why they need Garret Mills. Doesn’t seem like a bad dude, but we could use some special teams plays that Washington will make.

The question was: Did Reid have more deficiencies as a coach/GM than McNabb had as a QB?

Is there any doubt?

I listened to Coach AR’s interview with Spadaro and to be honest,
I was impressed with his openess and honesty on the decision, He’s always been loyal to his guys and in the past maybe a little too loyal to older players, but for some reason, he feels a special bond with Vick (I think it goes back to his own boys having legal troubles in which one of them even being incarcerated).Whatever you think about AR as a gameday coach (and I have ben harsh over the years) Coach AR took a lot of abuse about his kids problems and the fact that he didn’t have his own house in order and under control. I am not too sure how many other Coaches,Well-known figures with such a high-profile job in the City of Philadelphia with very demanding and passionate fans and a sometimes over-zealous local “got-you” media could have persevered and put up with all that.. .
I tip to my hat to Coach AR for this main reason, Selecting M Vick as your #1 Starter is the right thing to do right now and for the team moving forward. I bet that lockeroom is pumped as the players know that Kolb is just not ready for prime-time at this time, and that with Vick at the helm, this team can go places and is putting it’s best players on the field to win now, I think players will respond positively and raise their own games.. I see this as a real turning point for this team coming together and getting back to playing some Eagle Football..

I think the players had something to do with this. Certain people have an aura about them that inspires confidence in others. In this situation Mike Vick is that guy. His teamates love him and they are willing to put it all on the line for him because they know he gives them a chance to do something special on every play. The young guys on offense probably went to Marty and Marty went to Andy and told him how the troops felt just like Sylvio told Tony in that Christoper Columbus Sopranos episode. Andy had a choice lose Kolb or lose the team. He made the right decision.

All that crap in the offseason about the young guns and having a young QB grow with the young weapons was bull. Just another spin guys like spadaro I mean schiller used to rationalize McNabb’s departure. In my opinion this is almost like the Phillies trading Cliff Lee. You traded him away and then realized you still didn’t have good enough pitching so you get Oswalt. They had everyone buy into the Lee trade but deep down inside they knew they made a mistake. Oswalt righted the mistake and Vick does the same here. All the haters that agree with everything Andy does will show their hypocrisy soon.

Once the Love Fest wears off by Thursday,
the Eagles Coaches and Front Office still have a lot of holes to adress in order to be a real contender
The DT position needs more push (Does A Dixon become a starter in place of the overrated Mike Patterson.. )..
The LB Corps is still under performaing, maybe Fokou plays for Sims…
Is new OL V Wells ready to take the RG Starter spot and maye Nick Cole can slide in at Center
Is K Dunlap this years version of W Justice where he comes out of nowhere and possibly compete for more playing time.. J Peters has really digressed in his 1 + Years playing for th Eagles…

Scorp, no hypocrisy we had a believe, but the truth is and I will admit right here is that this move was great for the team. There is no team in ou rdivision who can contain the speed that we put on the field on offense if Reid plays the right game, and Guess what boys it ain’t over I thing AR is going to run that ball. What? yeah i think AR isgoing run the ball much more watch and see.

Now I want my Defense back, I want them to Jawala Slap them Jags into the next universe, I want them to have Gerrad looking up into the O- coordinaters box before every play and throwing the bird. I want to be able to tell the Eagles mad a hit just by watch the Jag fans Whince. Oh yeah fellas…SO IT IS WRITTEN ,SO LET IT BE DONE. GO EAGLES……Anybody with me.

Paulman, I agree. I think the issue with Peters is that he just is a very good pass blocking tackle. When he was in Buffalo he was a very good tackle but they ran the ball. I think he’s good at that and not having to drop back anywhere from 30-40 times a game to protect. And in our conference are some of the best DEs and outside LBs in the 3-4 scheme. Good thing is that he’s no longer protecting the QBs blindside. Now the microscope will be on Justice.

I am sure teams will line up some of their strongest pass rushes and put right over RT W Justice
Players like Ware,Peppers,Orapko,Mario WIlliams from Texans Jon Abraham, from Falcons etc,etc
wil lbe moved around a lot to get favorable match-ups over WJ

Finally, Kelley Washington outplayed him in the preseason and deserves the job. I’m hoping they can get a deal in place to bring him back.
Paulman, I think you mean “regress”…J Peters has really regressed. Digress just sounds like he keeps changing the subject of a speech haha. But I agree with you they should do something about it, unfortunately I don’t see it happening because of all the money they have invested in Peters

Yeah I agree but I much rather Justice on the blind side at least right now. And some pass rushers aren’t as effective coming from different side. As long as Justice doesn’t revert back to the game against the Giants 2 years ago, he can’t do much worst than Peters.

I didn’t dislike Baskett like many others, but I can’t say I didn’t see this coming. Riley Cooper has just come in smoking and Mike Bell just hasn’t looked good at all, I do wonder why it’s not Mike Bell that’s getting released though.

One major bonus that helps with the 4 WR situation though with Vick starting is that it pulls DeSean Jackson out of the fire a bit as far as injuries just. They can now keep Jackson off of those short routes and use his skills the way they should be used…on those deep routes…regularly.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Baskett showed up with the Redskins.
