My Thoughts Eagles/Jaguars

I’ve already read enough status updates on Facebook to know that many of you out there are in absolutely love with Michael Vick. I know for a fact that some of you are the same ones that detested his signing last year. I’ll say it again: I never wanted Michael Vick back in the NFL. I never wanted him on the Eagles. I still don’t.

Yes, he’s playing at probably the highest level of his career, but I just don’t have it in me to root for this team. I’m being completely honest. He’s made progress both on and off the field over the last couple years, but there is still something keeping me from getting excited about the Eagles. Sure, Vick is a part of that, but there is more.

Maybe it’s the fact that they aren’t remotely as good as people are making them out to be after beating two of the worst teams in football. That’s probably the main reason. I’m sorry to throw water on everyone’s fun, but it’s just how I feel.

Anyway, let’s check out the game:

What I liked…

-I’ll give Vick credit. His play on the field has been pretty good. Not great. Not “absolutely phenomenal” as I heard one talking head say today. But, he’s been good. He might actually be the only person on the planet capable of doing something with this offense considering how absolutely horrid the offensive line is. I still have questions about some of his decision making, but he’s a different quarterback than he was in his first go in the NFL. I am reserving judgment until I see him play a full game against a good team.

-The Jacksonville Jaguars selected left tackle Eugene Monroe last year with the No. 8-overall pick. I don’t care where he was drafted, he is not ready for a healthy dose of Trent Cole. Did anyone else notice that Cole just ate him alive play after play?

-In three games, Nate Allen has two picks and a sack. I’m ok with that if you are.

-I mentioned Cole, but the pass rush from the front four was there today. I admit I always look at Juqua Parker and think how I’d love to get an upgrade. Yet, he’s just so good when he’s out there. Why do I have these thoughts? I have to give Parker credit and I apologize for thinking these thoughts.

-Yes, it’s the Jaguars, and they are awful. But, still, the defense only gave up three points today.

-LeSean McCoy looks so much better this year.

-Wow, Trevor Laws made it into the correct section of this column for the first time in a long time. Laws was excellent today.

-I dig Dmitri Patterson. I know he’s low on the depth chart and a special teams guy, but I’m a fan.

-I like that the Eagles kick returners are Calvin and Hobbs.

-Good work on MJD, defense.

-More specifically, I am becoming a fan of Jorrick Calvin. He returns both punts and kicks, and he makes it so that DeSean doesn’t have to return punts.

…and not so much…

-DeSean Jackson, you are killing me. Could you get a little lazier on by the sidelines? Get your feet down! There is no excuse for not dragging the second foot. It’s what great receivers do. How bad do you want to be one?

-This offensive line is terrible. I’m running out of adjectives to describe just how truly horrific they are. The tackles are okay, but the interior is miserable. Vick had absolutely no time to throw the ball, and when he did, he was very good. Give him some time and he’ll be fine. This jailbreak stuff is ridiculous. And he can’t run because the pressure is from the inside, so there is no room to step up. It’s not that these guys are so bad per se, but they aren’t used to playing next to one another. How many times did I see guys spinning around and looking to see who was supposed to do what? Awful.

-Here’s a question: Do the special teams stink because they didn’t keep good players (Kelley Washington, Tracy White), or is Bobby April not getting it done? Way too many mistakes on coverage and on special teams in general.

-Love all the penalties. That’s what great teams do.

-Where is Brent Celek? I’m not blaming him necessarily, but he’s been quiet this year.

-Who takes a timeout before a punt? Why is it such a struggle to figure out how to use timeouts?

Ok, I’m done now. There are other things, but I’ll leave them alone. They did win 28-3 and they can only beat the team that’s on their schedule. So I’ll back off for now.

My thoughts Eagles/Jags:

Without McNabb, Westbrook, and now, Vick, Reid’s offense would be woeful!

For real – My thoughts:

I just envisioned Kevin Kolb quarterbacking that game. I’ll be right back; gotta get some toilet paper.

Now, I’m confused, Micah. How can Vick be the ONLY person on the planet capable of doing something behind this offensive line, but his play NOT be considered phenomenal? If I’m the ONLY person on the planet able to accomplish a certain feat, shouldn’t that feat be considered phenomenal?

I’m not one to pick apart an article. Really, I’m not. But, you say “Vick had absolutely no time to throw the ball, and when he did, he was very good. Give him some time and he’ll be fine.” If he’ll be “fine” with time to throw, what is he now?

The guy came in with a 105 QB rating, then threw for 3 TDs, ran for another, had 0 turnovers – all behind a porous offensive line. What gives??

I thought by about the 2nd Period (once Wells came in to replace Cole) that the Eagles O/Line played better, Vick had more time in the 2nd half as they wore the Jags Front 7 down with their quick pace and sideline to sideline play (obviously, the Jags don’t have the depth the Eagles have)
I really liked how the Coaches MM and Ar kept the medal to the floor and didn’t let up, It appeared that Jax Defense was in a Cover 2/Cover 3 which left the entire middle of the field and the sidelines open all day long…I didn;t understand their scheme which plays right into the Eagles passing game almost perfectly for players to be open…
All in al, this was the Eagles best overall perfomance in a long time (outside of th Special teams coverage units) and a ass-whopping to a team at their place with all the QB stuff that went on last week is pretty damn impressive in my book and I’ll take it….

Micah, most of Vicks’ plays today were made by the pass, not his legs. In fact, he ran very little. He killed this team out of the pocket, making good decisions.

I have never seen a QB throw for 3 TDs, with zero picks, have his “decision-making” questioned.

He was right between the numbers and he had more than a few dropped passes. What makes you question his decision making? He had no “near-turnovers,” nor did he throw into coverage.

This is what I’ve been waiting for……Vick’s feel good comeback story of the year can be what legends are made of. He could have packed it in after past mistakes but kept his head up and Kids all over the world can use Vick as an example when all is lost after past transgressions. Vick have taken the opportunity our great country gave him and turned a negative into a real feel good story. This season could not have started out better for Michael Vick and the ending would be Epic, if this fire he’s playing with now leads us to our 1st Lombardi. He would be revered as “A Legend” in Philadelphia. Newspapers love stories like this…Right?

At least Cobb and I see eye to eye:

For another game Michael Vick showed that he can make the reads of the coverages, then make the decision of which receiver to get the ball to, then put the ball on the money. For another week he got the job done under severe harassment and for the second week in a row, he led the Eagles to victory.
Vick is playing on an amazing level that Andy Reid was dreaming of when he signed him. He’s played in two and a half games and each time, his quarterback rating has been over 100 each time he has played.

Reid’s plan to get Vick on the field has been a priority since he hired him. That’s the only way you can explain the way he carved out ways and plays to utilze to get Vick on the field and in the game for the last year.

Vick’s first touchdown throw was a beauty. He hit DeSean Jackosn on a deep corner route, right by the sideline. Vick put the ball on the money and Jackson pulled it in. Vick’s deep throws have been outstanding.

He hooked up with Jeremy Maclin at the end of the second quarter with a beauty of a throw. Vick scanned the field then bought time with his legs by rolling to his right. With his time running out in the pocket, he hit Maclin in the endzone for a big touchdown before the half.

In the second half, we got another glimpse of the way Vick has grown as a quarterback. The lefthander dropped in the pocket and looked off former Eagles safety Sean Considine. Considine took a couple of steps toward the middle of the field in Cover 2 or double zone coverage and that’s all the room that Vick needed.

Vick put the ball on the money on the sideline in the area in between the cornerback and the safety. Maclin caught the ball in stride, avoided Considine he tried to grab his ankles, and took it the distance for a touchdown.

Mr. Vick capped things off when he pulled the ball down and turned on his turbos. Vick caught the Jaguars in a man-to=man coverage with their backs turned to him. He took off on a scramble that looked like taking candy from a baby. Right now Michael Vick is playing like he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Reid doesn’t need to make any apologies for playing Michael Vick.

Micah – I hear what you mean when you say that you want to see more. But I think you are expecting too much. Vick did exactly what he should have done, lead the team to a victory over the Jags. The bottom line is that I am ignoring the for and against Vick debate. The fact of the mattter is that he is the perfect QB for this particular team at this time. There were several drops today of very catcheable throws. I forsee that Vick is going to get better as the year goes on. And hopefully the o-line can come together and at least do their job. Like it or not Vick has the team and fans energized.

micah…you’re a hater….your qoute…”I’m reserving judgement on Vick for now”…No you’re not.

You’re quick to point out negatives when there’s none to find…absolutely none. Vick at this present time in the standings are with the top QB’s in the league. His touchdowns to interception ratio is among the best in the league and you make it sounds as if he’s just adequate. If Kolb played like this you and the philly Media would be calling him the next Peyton Manning. Micah, stop hating!!!! If you can’t lay your hatred aside for our star ….turn over your articles to a real journalist…Just write articles when Vick is average or have a bad game….That’s what you’re waiting for…aren’t you?

Your boy Kolb is Ass!! print it ….get over your personal hatred for Vick..He paid his debt and don’t owe you or anyone a darn thing.

Vick is a changed man as well as QB…Look at the numbers!

You’re the same loser that would rather have a losing season with Kolb than win with Vick…well look at the standings…..We’re on top with your bum/fraud of a QB holding the clipboard.

Come on now Micah. I love your articles man but you’re way off in left field with this one buddy. Give Vick his due. This guy didn’t run with the 1s all summer and look what he is doing. Did u see Djax’s numbers? Have u realized that Maclin has scored a td the last 4 games from a Vick pass (dallas playoff game included). This guy is making this team better. Give him his props and remember its ok to change your mind on Vick after all Andy did the same thing.

Drummer my man,,,,,,I’m here to say what most people think but decide error on the side of politically correct.

The comeback story of the year was actually a jab at our slanted media, because other cities would have jumped all over the opportunity to use Vick’s story as an example to turn around the youth and show them there’s 2nd chances in life……but not philly.

We’ll rather bury Vick than forgive him. I’ll tell you what

I have been Reid’s and the FO harshest critic this offseason after the handling of Mcnabb and if I’m willing to come down on them when they make boneheaded mistakes, then I’m man enough to commend them for giving Vick a chance when no one in this world or league would.

While I love Mcnabb and what he’s done for our team….I don’t think Mcnabb’s passion for the game can match Vick’s at this present time. Vick have a chip on his shoulder and appreciates every down he plays in a game he thought was lost forever. That’s the passion we never had at the QB position.

Kolb didn’t lose his job……Vick took it! and if he keeps this passion, only good things can happen for our city and our team. Vick have made his teammates believe…The coaches now believe….We as fans were not looking forward to a throw away season, and Vick have given us a reason to believe. Now, he only have to make the Media believe….and after all he’s been through…I think he’s up for the challenge.

Thank you Andy Reid and Jeffrey Lurie for signing Michael Vick…you saved our season.

I’ve got to go on record again. I was NOT a Michael Vick fan (based on his play in Atlanta), but someone has obviously schooled him on the finer points of quarterbacking in the NFL.

I give Andy Reid, his staff, and McNabb very high marks for this transformation.

As may know, I’m not a big Reid fan either, but I’ve got to give credit where it’s due and I’m big enough to admit that I was wrong about Vick.

Micah your( biased) opinion of Vick stems from your disappointment of not seeing Kolb starting. I suppose you think Kolb could have done as well against this “awful” Jags team? I’d take Osama Bin Ladin if he could lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl. The point is, those of you phony so-called dog lovers only became dog lovers when Vick became an Eagle.

You say you’re ” just reserving judgment on him right now. I know no one wants to hear this after a 28-3 win and I understand I’m the bad guy. That’s fine. I just want to see more that’s all.” I’d be fine with us too if you waited until the season’s over before you write another column.

Nate Allen’s sack today came in garbage time on a safety blitz when Jacksonville had already given up. It seemed like either an attempt to pad the stats or a personal message from Reid to Del Rio rather than a legitimate sack.

Slick, please leave Micah alone. He obviously saw a different game than the rest of us. In the game he watched, Vick made plays with his legs. He didn’t read the defenses and deliver the ball to the open receiver (in stride, no less).

Vick stepping in and throwing a TD ( all he does is manufacture touchdowns ) that 1 play from vick last yr is a prelude to this year. WHO SAW THIS COMING. And it looks like Songs is drinking the Vick koolaide. Ha, how Ironic. Mike Vick is playing lights out, very good football. He really is. And he is a big, very big reason this team is in first place and playing well. But Songs goes overboard, as he did before this season. Vick is amazing and he’s better than ever. But Song’s is calling the guy perfect.

That said, yeah, Micah, you are TOTALLY a hater in this article. You ARE nitpicking. Is the D developing? Is the offense clicking? Is the QB improving and impressing? Are the weapons involved?

And Celek had some key catches. I don’t think that just because he’s not as involved (very much so last year) quite as much as before, doesn’t mean there’s something wrong or a problem. The ball has been going to Maclin, Jackson way more, and they have been running a bit more it seems. Plus Vick runs (not as much today) which takes up offensive snaps. Just one point how you are reading too far into things with a negative slant – not surprising in the ‘media’ round Philly. But really, alone in first place, improving in many key areas. New role players chipping in. You should include the big picture in these articles as well, cause that’s the bottom line. THIS TEAM IS EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS AND IMPROVING. Especially when you take losing Weaver, Kolb playing bad, the line playing bad, losing Jackson, etc….. into account.

ill take 2-1 and being atop the nfc east ahead of the pack. win the east you make the playoffs.
i really hope ur pessimism comes from being a bitter kolb fan. (i like kolb, i like vick, i like mcnabb)
even kolb fans should realize, kolb is on board with the plan and he has it good right now.

It really amazes me that people are still talking about what Michael Vick did with those dogs, give me a break he served his time now let him live.
