Eagles Defense Needs To Get Tougher

Perhaps no play portrayed the state of the Eagles defense on Sunday better than the first quarter touchdown run by Ryan Torain.

On the play, the Eagles defensive front was pushed back off the line of scrmmage. The linebackers over pursued the run and had to turn around to try to make a play. Once Torain got into the secondary, he ran over safety Quintin Mikell like he wasn’t even there. Touchdown, Redskins!

This play not only was typical of the day, but it was typical for the season so far when it comes to the defense.  They were there to make the play, but unable to finish.  This defense is one that will succeed with its speed. It has no big bodies on the line, and it’s linebackers are also undersized.

The cornerbacks and safeties are ball hawking players that will rarely put a lick on a receiver coming across the middle.  Many times they’re in position to make a game changing hits or tackles but their lack of size and aggressiveness prevents them from doing so.

On Sunday, the defense was beaten and bruised up and down the field.  Clinton Portis, a player who was considered washed up the week before, ran through tackles like he used to in his prime.  He shed the smaller Eagles’ arm tackles like they weren’t even there.

Numerous times the Eagles used their speed to get to him in the backfield, but were unable to finish the play.  Their inability to make the tackles really highlighted the problem this defense will face all year.   They are simply not big enough to beat an offense man to man.  They can blitz and scheme their way to an occasional big play, but they cannot win the one-on-one battles when it matters most.

The defense lacks any toughness what-so-ever.  The only player that strikes any semblance of fear into players is MLB Stewart Bradley. Other then that, the unit has no intimidator.  This is one area where the team really misses Brian Dawkins.  Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott tries to use Mikell in that blitzing safety/linebacker role which Dawk excelled in, but he lacks the size and toughness to mix it up like Dawk did.  Ask Torain if he is afraid when Mikell comes running at him.

When the Eagles defense was at its best, it had players who would knock the daylights out of an opposing player.  Jeremiah Trotter and Brian Dawkins punished players throughout the game, to the point where they would wear down as the game went on.  By the fourth quarter, the players were so physically beaten up that they could not run like they did when the game started.

One player who became available this week that might help is safety Michael Lewis.  Lewis was released by San Francisco, and is now a free agent. For all of his liabilities in coverage, Lewis would bring an attitude and toughness to this defense it lacks. People said Dawkins could not cover when he left, but he brought enough to the Denver defense that he earned a Pro-Bowl bid a year ago.  Clearly Lewis is no Dawkins, but the Eagles are thin at safety already, and Lewis would not have been knocked over like Mikell was on that play.

This unit has talent. It can create turnovers and only gave up 17 points on Sunday. But if it wants to move to that next level and really become a defense that can win a game, it needs to toughen up, start winning the one-on-one battles, stop being pushed around.

Well it is what is is for now. I cant c us wasting any draft picks or trading to add to defense this year. We are an undersized group i would have to agree but there is ALOT of talent across the board on this defense. With the amount of talent speed and hopefully mcdermotts scheme i think we should not be as bad on that side of the ball this year. Are we going to lights out and one of the tops in the leauge prob not. I do think barring Vicks time off and how the offense plays that we could may a playoff run with this D.

Good stuff and article Elliot,
This Eagles Defense was built in mind for the Eagle Offense putting up lots of points and getting a lead on teams where the Eagles would unleash thier “fast balls” on opposing QB’s and have their ball-hawking Def Secondary and make some Int’s..
The big problem with this Defense is their lack of size and strength up fromnt when playiong more physical teams who like to run the ball first which is probably 1/2 the teams that they will face this season in 49ers,Bears,Falcons,Titans,Jags,Redskins (twice),Giants (twice),and even the Vikings
will run the ball more with AP versus this Eagles front… So I count about 10 of the 16 games that the Eagles D will be tested and mostl likely over-matched at the point of attack…
So far it worked against an inept Jaguar Offense, it did not work versus the Redskins…
I also failed to include the Cowboys Tewice and the Texans who have RB A Foster just tearing it up right now…
My biggest concern moving forward is why build a defense which just doesn’t match up well with
most of the opponents you will face… If you cannot stop the run in the NFC East and play physical type of football, you will not make the playoffs… (I think this has been proven, time and time again..)

Yes the defense is wimpy. No one cares about Bradley either. He doesn’t do anything special. Not a game changer. He just keeps the defense from falling apart completely because Gaither sucks. Not sure they would go Lewis just because of toughness. Did he leave here on bad terms? Of course being out of work changes your mind about a place. But if I was a coordinator, as soon as I see him come into the game, I’m going play action to whatever side he is playing. But maybe a guy like Jauron can coach him up to be better in coverage. I know I’m liking Mikell less and less each game. Dude is average at best.

Here’s a post I made 2 days ago. It work for this article as well.
It’s no secret the Eagles defensive tackles gets pushed around. The idea is they are 2 gap penetrators in this 4-3 defense. I have a problem with the concept because they are undersized on first and second down when the run is most likely to come and do get pushed around far too often. On the third and longs smaller defensive ends take the regular starters spots when their quickness is supposed to give them an advantage. I think Bunkley can be good if he adds 25 pounds and just clogs the middle and bull rushes most of the time. The most domonating defensive tackles over the last 10 years have been huge men; Nata, Haynesworth, Ratliff, both Williams in Minn, Henderson, Stroud, etc. Give me 2 monsters in the middle to clog up the run, keep the linbackers clean, require both guards and the center to block and the defense would be much better. Everything is easier said than done, but it just takes monsters to clog up the middle if your running a 4-3 or 3-4 defense.
You can have big tackles surrounded by fast players at the ends and backers, it’s called a balanced defense.

Excellent point Jphalines,
Eagles are just small across the board on Defense to the DT’s, LBs, CB and even at Safety where many of today’s Safeties are over 6′ and weigh 220-230lbs where they can take on the big athletic RB’s,TE,& WR that play in today’s NFL..
JJ’s Defense’s of the late 90/early 2000’s was great to match up speed and athleticism with what many teams in the NFL were doing at the time of employing 3 WR sets and running “WCO/Red-Gun” type of Offenses. The skill players (RB,WR,TE) have all become bigger, stronger and faster and I am not sure the keeping of “small but fast” type of personnel on Defense works all that well versus these bigger Skill Players in the NFL anymore. The Eagles Defense simply cannot match up physically
with them week by week and as the season gets into Nov/Dec with this Roster…

I just rewatched the Game and I swear, my Son’s toy “Nigna Stuffed Toy” could tackle better than
CB A Sammuel… Has anyone see a NFL player of his talent play like such a “P—-Y” !!!!!!
It’s embarrasing to watch this team become so “soft” over the years… in years past, the Eagles may
have lost some games, but the other team was always going to pay a price for it..now it’s a lovey, dovey, and I respect this guy, that guy, help pick-him up off the ground, etc, etc…
Where’ the “Warriors”, the “Proud” on the Eagles Team

Also, I think the next time PW visits the Wizard of OZ, he needs to bring both D-Jax and J Maclin so they can get some “Heart”.. (both these players appeared to have “quit” a little on their teammates last week)

I still miss Buddy Ryan. I know, I know – 1 playoff win, but, God, he was entertaining! And if nothing else, we were a tough group. If he could have found a real offensive coordinator. Buddy would probably, PROBABLY have won.

To this date, my all-time Eagle game was the House of Pain game. There was so much hype and to have it unfold the way it did. Well, let’s just say, I was proud to be a Philadelphian.

When I was growing up in West Philly, we fought with our hands. And my friends NEVER let me lose a fight. If I lost. I had to go back the next day, and the next day, until I won. In my opinion, that’s the Philly spirit. Although I was one of the smallest guys on the field, my favorite positions were nose tackle and running back (in that order). I wasn’t happy until my nose got bloodied. That’s the Philly spirit!!!

Throughout the city, there were real tough guys. In our neighborhood, we went from the basketball court, to the football field, to the baseball diamond, to the street to play hockey (and roller derby), to the corner to play wall ball, back to the street to play deadblock (I know, it’s not a sport, but it’s so Philly) and back to the basketball court to repeat the cycle.

There wasn’t one person in my neighborhood, not one, who was 5’10” or above who couldn’t dunk a basketball. That’s how much we played sports. 61st and Cobbs Creek/Baltimore Ave. was like the sports mecca.

I’m feeling good because people are actually talking football strategy and not all the other dumb stuff about personalities, etc. I love talking football strategy. However short-lived it may be, I’m going to enjoy it!

jphalines, exactly. Reid keeps getting players at every position that are fast and undersized. He just wants speed everywhere. You can’t do that in the NFL. You need some guys in there who just cannot be moved easily. 3rd and 3 is a running down against this defense.

Paulman, I am going to watch the game again tonight. I was at the game so need to see it from a different, closer perspective to see how bad we really were.

How did Maclin and Jackson quit? One’s a pro bowler and they’ve both been having good seasons with Vick. Because the quarterback changed, they quit? As much as Jackson wants a new contract, you think he quit? Didn’t they both usher McNabb out of town in support of Kolb? Now, they have SUDDENLY quit?

Here’s a different perspective. Perhaps, Kolb is not the QB many (including you) thought he was.

Watching the game Drummer
I saw a lot of routes being run in 3/4 speed by both D-Jax & Maclin and not all out effort.
I saw very little effort in attemtping to block down field for their teammates or coming back for the vall when your QB is in trouble.. I could see it in their body language that their heads were somewhere else and not on the task at hand, If both these players are truly #1’s in their minds and fans mind’s, you play 100% to the end until you hear the whistle to the end of the game… How about when D-Jax caught a pass late in the game and hjust simply dove forward for another yard when he never picked his head up to see that he hactually had some room to make a bigger play and at least get the 1st Down.. he caught it and dove straight down and was actually short of the first down which the refs blew the spot… Anyways, the point is that no matter who is playing QB, these guys need to fight hard to the end and I did not see or sense that in either one of them…

I do also think they were exhausted by games end too…
WIth 4th WR Cooper out with concussion, they were running routes all 2nd half with no substitutes
which I will give them a little for that.. but they looked winded, disinterested and defeintely did not want any contact with any Redskin..

Not being able to get off blocks has been a continual problem for the Eagles and not tackling well has also been a problem. The Eagles defense is not instilling fear in any opponent. They are making offenses lick their chops when they see the Eagles mowed down like bowling balls on running plays by
the Redskins Oline, supposedly one of the worst in the league. I don’t look forward to Eagles games any more from a competitive standpoint, only to see what they will botch up next. Which of the three phases of the game will underperform? Offense-Defense-Special teams?

Does ST Coach get on anybody’s elses’s nerves besides me..
The guy talks, talks, talks but doesn’t say anything… He should be a Politician and has laid the most excuses for a Coach than I have ever heard…
#1) ” We are still looking at players to see what their Strengths are”
#2) “Some of the players are Starters and it’s difficult for them to get the all the time in to click on Special Teams since they are practicing their positions”
#3) “It’s hard to simulate 100% game speed for Coverage units, You don’t want players to get hurt in practice…”

This guy is unbelievable and a blowhard and has set this teams Special Teams Units to fail in my mind..He should be Fired immediately… I will be on his ass and performance every week until it happens…

Paul

It seems that wherein Kolb is concerned, the blame aways lays with someone or something else. I can’t keep up with the excuses, but here are a few:

Vick
Reid
the offensive line
Avant
the wind
McCoy
the opposing defense was too good (Baltimore)
the pre-season (it doesn’t count)
the Wildcat
McNabbb
there was no game planning
he had no time with the first unit

and now, Paul, you want to add:

our pro bowl receiver and 2nd year upstart. Got it. They’re on the list, but I’m sure there’s more to be added.

I am not sure why you think I keep making excuses for Kolb..
I stand by my comments from spring, thru summer, A starting QB needs 10 games to ful lseason to know whats going on and obviously Kolb is nowhere that leve after 2-3 starts this season..
If he doesn’t progress in his opportunites this season, than release, trade him in teh off-season and move on to the next QB.. If vick plays well, then offer him a 2-3 year Deal and move forward with him as your #1
Bottom line is that the Eagles will not make the playoffs in 2010 regardless of who is playing QB…
Do you want Vick in and get 7-8 wins or play Kolb and get 5-6 wins this year.. It depends on EAgles plans on whther they want Vick around for the future which is not a given.. Vick may want togo for top $$ in Free-agency and go to another team.. who knows…
Vick is by far, the better QB who give the Eagles the best chance to win, but he’s hurt now and to be honest I don’t think either Kolb or Vick could play a full Season with this team and not get injured at some point .. So maybe keeping the both of them and rotating with whoever has the hot hand will work… my choice would defintely be VIck and see what happens– if they are 3-9 and out of the playoff chase, then I would play Kolb to get him experience and see what he has and at least improve his trade value if nothing ealse once the Eagles are eliminated wehich I expect to be by the 1st weekend of Decemeber
