Kevin Kolb Comes Through In Big Game Versus The Niners

You’ve got to give Kevin Kolb credit for playing very well against the San Francisco 49ers in what was a must win game for the Birds.

You also have to credit Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg with putting together a nice game plan for the young quarterback.  They put him in situations where he could get the ball out of his hands.

The young quarterback put up some quality numbers in the victory.  He threw for 253 yards on 21 of 31 passing and a quarterback rating of 103.3.  Not bad work against a good Niners defense.

Kolb stood in the pocket and delivered the football if he didn’t have pressure.  When he had to move, he moved and made some plays with his legs.

On his touchdown pass to tight end Brent Celek, Kolb felt the pressure coming from his left side as he looked downfield, he wisely escaped to his right, kept his wits about him and looked downfield for somebody to come open.

Celek left his blocking assignment and tried to get open, Kolb spotted him by the endzone and put a strike on him.  The tight end fought his way into the end zone for what was a big score for the football team.

If the Birds had settled for a field goal, it would have been a real downer.  LeSean McCoy had a touchdown called back, because holding was called on left guard Todd Herremans.

Kolb ability to keep his poise and make a play was a big confidence builder for him and the football team.

All night long, the former Houston Cougar did a nice job of reading what defense he was facing and getting the ball downfield to his receivers.  You could clearly see that he doesn’t have the deep arm to make those deep throws to DeSean Jackson, but he throws the short and intermediate throws very well.

His one deep throw to Jeremy Maclin was underthrown but Maclin made the adjustment and came down with the football.

Kolb and Maclin had a nice chemistry going as they hooked over the middle for intermediate throws again and again.  Kolb was decisive with his decision-making and on target with his throws.

I liked the fact that eventhough the offense only contributed three points in the second half, Kolb was able to drive them for a key field goal which wound up being the difference.

He’s got something he can build on, and the football team can believe in him again.

Looks like all Kevin needed was his cherry popped/bell rung. Unfortunately, he’ll get alot of that with this offensive line.

A good game plan overall and a very good perfomance by Kolb & McCoy and the O/Line
and in particular Center McGlynn,RG Jean Gilles and RT W Justice were solid all evening..
LT K Dunlap needs a lot of work on Pass-Prtoectiing and needs to stay lower and use his lower body more. Kolb threw to 7-8 Receivers/RB’s and did a nice job of going to his 2nd/3rd3/4th options and occasionally running out the pocket when the pass-protection broke down..
IF TE Celek catched any of those seam routes (I think he dropped 3 of them) thy game would have been broken wide open late in the 3rd/early 4th Quarter.. Celek probably has more drops in 5 games this season than he has the last 2 years combined.. What’s up wit him this year…
A win is a win is a win… Good performance by the Offense in a game they had to have…

Kolb was solid. I agree the oline was very good in this game in my opion other than king dunlap. All in all we got the W. ……..squeaked it out vs and 0-5 team but a w is a w GO BIRDS

Those seam routes to Celek were thrown while he was well covered and were clearly a case of Kolb trying to keep inside his comfort zone, which always included Celek (remember how he started his first few games relying on his best friend Brent as if he was the only eligible receiver? The 9ers have some of the best cover LBs in the game, and most of those ‘drops’ you refer to were throws that Kolb panicked on and threw into coverage. I think Kolb will learn from it and go to the RBs and WRs more when Celek is covered, but Paulman, you’re just choosing your pet peeve of the week as your protocol – Celek’s contributions were CRITICAL to the win.

Songs, where are you and what’s your excuse for Kolb’s impressive performance? You gonna say the 9ers suck cause they’re winless? Or are you going to admit that while Kolb still has a lot of work to do (as a player who still hasn’t played half an NFL season yet should), and is improving?

Like I had posted

McCoy was the key to the game
Kolb is far from an immobile QB

And he played a better game against the Skins D than Rodgers ( the new NFL Wonder Boy )did yesterday –his QB rating would have been 90 except for that Hail Mary INT which should have been an Eagle TD and the delay of game cost 4 points plus McCoys fumble halted another drive
As it was his rating was the same as Rodgers against the Skins

The verdict is still out –I want to see a whole season behind a decent O line -the patchwork one the Eagles have now is not going to get it done and how many more injuries are going to occur in the next 11 games –but damn get off the guy’s back after so few outings –And yes at this point I would like to have a healthy Vick but that doesn’t mean Kolb is a bust

I swear I have never seen so many injuries this early for one team on both sides of the ball

Can Kolb become a 2nd round draft pick that gets us a new R guard, a big tough kid from the SEC or Big 10 perhaps?

Anderson, with Vicks age (albeit he didn’t take an NFL football beating while in prion and on trial….), his aggressive running style that puts him in danger of getting injured (am I going out on a limb there or is there a prime example of that….?) and contract status, you want to trade away the best backup option we have behind him? We need Kolb to continue to develop and either be a solid backup or a starter in the future. Gambling with Vick, who still hasn’t shown he can beat a good D yet, and having to start from scratch for a backup QB (that’s assuming that Vick is resigned) is a dumb move.

That said, yeah, they certainly need to draft O line next year.

I would love to see what this team could do if their special teams wasn’t giving up 50 and 60 yard returns. Giving the opponent a short field is a sure way to lose a game. Bobby April is supposed to be the Special Teams Guru. If that is the case, he must have some stone cold stupid players covering for him. Has a gunner made a single tackle this year?

Kolb played well last night. Vick has played well before him. The injury is on his throwing side and said to be extreemely painful. In my opinion Vick makes our offense more difficult to defend. Kolb did well, and can be successful in the system also, but if we are solely looking at getting the most wins this year, I would have to say a healthy Vick gives us our best shot. Actually, with all of the other areas of major concern on this team, having (2) good options at QB is a bright spot.

greenfan, seriously dude; our special teams is absolutely atrocious. I mean, when do we just straight up fire the coach? I’m not so sure it gets much worse that his.

The Dolphins fired their ST Coach last week are their horrible perfomance..
I think the EAgles should let go on blow-hard B April who for some reason, has built in excuses on why it’s tough to coach and play Special Teams… Toss him out and replace him with Ike Reese
To Shiller,
Celek has made plenty of those tough catches in the past.. The 3 Drops I am refering to would have been tough catches in traffic, but that’s what your TE needs to do, It just seems like he’s bobbling a lot of balls this year..

Paulman, I agree; what’s up with Celek and all the dropped passes? Some of those would have lead to more points on the board. Last night was a solid win given all the injuries we have right now.

Kolb played very well and showed his Teammates,Coaches and others in the NFL that he is a NFL Caliber QBwho can manage a game and lead his team to victory..
He made a few shaky plays and held the ball a little too long (the fumble) and a couple of off-target throws but all in all, a very strong perfomance with good compusure and good decision making..
I give him a B + Grade and think he did himself and the team very well… Congrats to him and the team..

Schill, I do not want to trade him during this season. But it is a thought for the off season, Vick is not locked up for next year, and Kolb is not finished on his deal with the Birds. It just makes one attractive trade bait, as opposed to losing Vick for no return. Despite what some say, Kolb is a professional quailty Qback, there are quite a few teams who might pay very dearly to aquire him. How would anybody like to be Cleveland, Carolina, Arizona, etc?

Silva, I agree, but what about the birdz at QB? We need to have a quality starter and a quality backup. Can you think of a scenario where we trade away Kolb and have a good 1 and 2 option at QB? Not nearly as likely as if you keep both.

Agree
Something has to be done about the Special teams
Complete disaster
You can see giving big yards once in a while but damn every kick is a potential TD runback
And what is with all the injuries

I admit I was wrong about this game. Kolb was adquate at the QB position. But his play was not the major factor for the win. There were a number of other factors that contributed to this Eagle victory.(1) Was the incredible play of a wounded warrior Shean McCoy. I’ll admit again that I was not impressed with his play last year but lately he has shown tremendous potential and heart.(2) The OL attacked the defense for a change (Jason Peters is more suited to run blocking than pass protecting).giving McCoy more options for cutback runs (at which he seems gifted).

With all the improved play set aside the Eagles still only won by three points.(3)The 49er’s were so inept they practically gave the game away. I can see why they’re winless in 2010.

Kolb did a great job, wouldn’t mind seeing him as our QB if he maintains it. He took hits well, was evasive and made some awesome plays on the run. He did check down on almost every series after taking a hit, but all and all, it was an impressive performance. Of course, the running game was a HUGE factor in this game (in agreement with Deepthreat about the O).

Here’s hoping that he can maintain it if he’s starting against the Falcons, a team that doesn’t make as many mistakes as the Niners.

Hey I am a hard worker and good also, but I think some of you would fire me out right just becasue. :),
Good points fellas, but what is the rush to get rid of him. I would like to see them resign Vick, and at the same time sell Kolb on staying and being our back-up, with the insentive of getting it later when Vick moves on. Yep I am dreaming but its a nice dream uh?

Now don’t worry boy’s AR is going to go heavy on the offense this coming off season, it is part two to his reload plan. I see some high end monsters that will be called to contribute right away. Mark my word.

I am talking trading him because I think it is unlikely the Birds can keep both into next year. You may be able to resign Vick, then just tell Kolb to suck it up and deal, but then he is gone for nothing after next season when his deal expires. I do not want quality players leaving if we get nothing in return.Right now you have 2 Qbacks, plenty of teams do not even have one, the Eagles need to use one of theirs to fill a gap at another spot.

With Vick it’s a total blow out…Kolb did o k

But we need Vick to be successful in the long term..49ers stink and is the worse team we played so far.

Is Kolb good? or play well against teams that stinks?….Chiefs were the worse last year and it looks like the niners are this year’s Chiefs.

We don’t need Vick to be successful long term, though he may be the QB. What the Birds NEED are offensive linemen, in particular a right guard and probably a new right tackle, with Justice becoming the rg and rt backup. Despite the win last night I am still not convinced this is a very good team. They just beat another bad team yeasterday, just like the Jags and Lions. The fell painfully short against both of the decent squads they have played this year.

Paul Mancini
Paul Mancini
October 11, 2010 7:34 pm

Anyone notice RG MJG last evening,
I saw him get beat maybe twice all night, no penalties or off sides, McGlynn,MJG and Justice all played really well, The left-side had some issues with Dunlap attempting to pass-block and HErreman with acoupld of penalties, but watching alotr of football this season, to be honest, this Eagle O/Line is about like everyone else.. To expect Offensive Tackles not to give up a sack versus some of these speed rushers and outside blitzers is just not realistic. The key is the good QB’s in the league get rid of the ball or step up to avaoid the sacks but even then, sometimes they are just going to happen.. I would say about 1/3 to 1/2 of the Sacks the Eagles have given up so far is when Kolb/Vick simply have held the ball too long instead of getting rid of it.. as VIck plays more and the current O/Line plays more together, everyone’s timing should improve
