Reid Must Have Game Plan For Dunlap-Abraham Matchup

I understand the importance of having confidence in your players but Andy Reid can’t make the mistake he made a few years ago when he stood on the sidelines and watched Osi Umenyiora record six sacks on Winston Justice.  He’s got to have an adjustment to block John Abraham if King Dunlap can’t do the job.

Kevin Kolb must have confidence in Dunlap protecting his blindside whether he’s doing a good job or not.  If he becomes overly concerned about Abraham beating Dunlap’s blocks, Kolb will find himself looking at the pass rush and eating the football.

He’s got to be disciplined and keep his eyes downfield in case a receiver comes open.  It’s virtually impossible to play the quarterback position in the NFL, if your eyes are focused on the pass rush.  It’s a sign that the quarterback doesn’t trust guys who are blocking for him.

This is the dilemma.  Reid can’t leave Dunlap out there by himself if he’s getting his butt kicked.  After a sack or two, Kolb will understandably not expect Dunlap to do the job and start dropping his eyes and watching the pass rush.

If Reid see this happen he must do something immediately or we will see Kolb start going backwards again as a quarterback.  Reid believes in the Phil Jackson coaching style of having confidence in his players and letting them solve the problem.  Kolb wasn’t solving it during the preseason and earlier in the regular season, so he may have to do something to remedy the problem.

He’s got to go into the game with a game plan that assumes Dunlap isn’t going to be able to do the job on Abraham.

The 6’9 offensive tackle has been susceptible to bull-rushes and other power moves because pass rushers are able to get up under him.  He’s gotten stronger so he does a good job of blocking pass rushers with his arms, but he’s no match for a powerful rusher if they get inside his arms and into his body.

We saw this last year when the Raiders Richard Seymour took him to school and we saw the Niners do the same thing to him last week.  He’s got to drop anchor, which means bending his knees and lowering his butt, so he has power to stop that bull rush.

Reid decide to move the pocket by rolling Kolb out.  They could put tight end Brent Celek over there to double-team Abraham.  They could chip Abraham with the backs.  They could run three-step drop routes.  They may be able to slow down Abraham with a couple of draws or screens.

They could crack him from the outside, by lining fullback Owen Schmitt outside and sending him slow motion, then telling him to take his best shot at Abraham.

I’d also like to see them run the ball at Abraham during their 15-play script to start the game as a way of getting his attention.

Of course they may have to slide Todd Herremans from his left guard outside if things get unbearable.  This is worth keeping an eye on.  FYI – Abraham had two sacks last week.

Abraham is built very much like Freeney/COle.. low build, qucik first stop and great upper body strength.. He is healthy for the 1st time in 2 years.. His contract is up and he is primed for a big year.. One way to frustrate him is to run right at him, he’s not a big guy and will take a lot of wide, outside rushes which leaves a nice hole off left-tackle to run thru where a TE in motion picks-him up and rides him further outside, meanwhile the LT goes out and blocks the OLB/CB and creates a nice running lane to the outsdie for McCoy..
On Passing situations, I would line up FB Schmitt or TE Celek or MIlls right over him and help LT Dunlap block him, then Schmitt/Celek/MIlls could then be a safety valve outlet receiver if Kolb is in trouble, Don’t forget about the other DE on the other side (Beirmann) who is having a nice year and will give Justice some problems too… but clearly Abraham is the FAlcons biggers rusher from the DL

yes thats what i was gonna say g
start the game out by making a consious effort to run the ball at him and at least keep him honest
that will help slow his jump off the snap

on another is it a given kolb is the qb this week i didnt see an annoucement yet ?

Playing the QB position takes a lot of heart. You have to depend on others to make you successful. Anyone who ever questioned 5 toughness should have their football knowledge questioned. This is a part of football that you can’t judge in practice. The red jersey protects you. I don’t know if 4 has this skill or not. I do know that o lines break down all the time. If he can develop the heart to deal with that pressure he should be a good QB at this level. Question is can you develop heart or are you born with it?

I agree run right at him
That is usually a good strategy as great D lineman like to pursue

ronnie – herramans is our best OL. And he has a bum ankle. If he plays tackle (gotta use that ankle much more), it’s WAY too high of a risk that he gets injured and is out for a period of time. At guard he is less vulnerable to ankle injury. That’s the bottom line there. It’s a shame, but that’s not a great option at this time….

Being sacked is part of football. I want Kolb to succeed but to say he has to have a great line is really not be realistic!

Getting sacked HOW many times is part of Football

It is the part that makes you a losing QB

Name one QB that was a success without a good O line

Ask Wunderkind Rodgers after the Skins game and his concussion

Brady found out about being sacked in the Superbowl against the Giants

If being sacked is part of football how come Vick doesn’t just stand there instead of running and getting injured

You saw what it did to Farve in last year’s NFC championship

RCP, duh. It’s not just about playing well when you get sacked. It’s about being able to remain calm and focused. The point is a lot QBs can’t do it. After they take a few hits and a couple sacks, they forget their reads, bail out on plays and just lose complete confidence. While the good QBs don’t lose confidence and still try to play their game. That’s the difference. Right now, no one know if Kolb has that yet. And it’s also different when you are constantly getting hit WHILE you’re team is losing. Can you bring them back? Or are you too scared? So, yes I am sure everyone agrees any QB play is affected negatively when the o-line doesn’t hold up but it’s how you respond to it that determines your career.

This is the aspect where you have to admire and guy like Favre who takes a beating almost every game, but doesn’t miss a game and we know he lacks 0 confidence in his arm even if there are 3 defenders ready to pick it off. I’m not saying you have to be reckless with the ball but you can’t lose confidence or else the D will chew you out. But if you stay in there, take the hits and make the D pay, they will back off.

And as much as a problem Dunlap is the way injuries are piling up the entire line may be out
There are 11 games left

Read the history of Bert Jones who was an all pro QB

He was a first round draft choice

His father former NFL Player Dub Jones ( Cleveland Browns ) told the team that was probably going to draft him to forget it because their O Line sucked and his kid wouldn’t be signing with them and have his career ruined
So they traded the pick to the Colts and Jones had a very good NFL career

Wow! Thank you scorp. My point is you can’t look at anyone and see there heart. This is a man’s game. It takes a special player to play the QB position. Sorry rcp if you don’t understand my opinion. I am not even putting Kolb down. I’m just stating the obvious. Aron Rodgers was sacked over 40 times both years. He is not gun shy. He keeps his head up looking downfield with the rush coming. Will he be able to do that? I think that is a fair question.

I am NOT a Kolb fan I am an Eagle Fan but I am being realistic

NO QB will succeed let alone a first year starter behind a bad O line

That is the fact of life in the NFL

Trying to base whether Kolb is going to be a good NFL QB doesn’t include getting your ass handed to you week after week which is what will happen with a bad O line

The O Line is the most important element in football PERIOD and the Eagles are one more injury from a complete disaster

Teams can win SBs with mediocre or even less at QB but not with bad O lines

And what is this one way street about Jackson –How about the fact he can’t go over the middle
Teams can see that so they will just lay back on him and not have to come up tight to the line

So it opens up the middle for the FB or McCoy or Celek and they get the passes –but no worry about Jackson not getting the ball and not making more $$$$

I thought it was about winning–not worrying about Jackson’s contract future

well im not 1 of the ppl screaming for more money for djax but whatver
we have the line we have (play the hand your dealt)
if andy thought kolb couldnt handle it he wouldnt have made him opening day starter
andy been’s coaching along time he has yrs of experience he’s a former o lineman so if any1 knew our oline was trash it would be him
with this knowledge they still traded away a qb to pave the way for this guy
so in short he should be able to handle this to some degree
now obviously if osi ssacks him 8 times in 1 gm theres nothing he could do about that but if he gets decent enough protection considering this putrid o line we should be able to win or score points
the line was putrid last yr as well

Is Austin Howard injured?
And where the heck is Reggie Wells?
I have a hard time believing that Dunlap is one of the top 5 o-linemen on this team. I understand it takes a different skillset to play tackle vs. guard, but why not move Herremans out to LT and play Cole or Wells at left guard? I know Herremans and Cole are banged up, but they gotta be better than Dunlap.

I just hope our d-line outplays the Atlanta d-line. That is going to be vital for us to win this game.

And it would be nice to see some at least consistently adequate special teams play starting this game. In years past even when they weren’t great they at least got the job done and didn’t consistently hand the other teams a shot to stay in the game. Let’s hope they get it right. To win this game it might take solid play from the special teams and the offense combined with great defensive play. Let’s hope they can put together a consistent 60 minutes from all 3 phases.

they rarely are blockbuster trades in the nfl but is there anyway to trade for a lineman
do we have any trade bait besides having to trade a qb
im asking?
and if so does any1 know who might be available
we can mix and match and do what we have to do to win some reg season games but when we get to playoffs it will be same as last yr if we have this line as is no matter who qb’s

Lloyd Mankins from the Patriots could be had but can’t play until November sometime,
The problem is that he hasn’t had a sanp snice last year and it’s very doubtful he would be much help for any new team trying to learn a new system and only be eligible for the final 8 weeks of the season.
Plus he want’s a monster contract…
The Eagles basically have 4 truly healthy O/Lineman (McGlynn,MJG,Justice and Dunlap) so they are going to have make do with what they have..

I have been shouting it from the rooftops. Logan Mankins should be an Eagle. I do not care if he is behind on the learning curve, doesn’t know the offense, etc. He is for building as we go forward. Being honest, this Oline is not good enough to be a factor this year. Manikins had a real mean streak.

G:
NO. Don’t run right at Abraham at all! Run the other side, and only towards his side to keep it honest. We DO NOT have a professional, NFL fullback. We have a kid who has some skills who’s trying to make it in the NFL. That’s the definition of “BIG DAY” if the Eagles run right at a skilled top-level NFL DE. Why is this counter-intuitive? He’s smallish, but he’s still a beast. Run away, run away…. I mean, I like the physics digression discussion of everything, but Abraham is an elite player.
Despite all of this, I hope King Dunlap has some major heart that Big Red sees and we haven’t…yet. Beat the man in front of you.

I think many of you are being way too hard on Dunlap.
I think he has progressed pretty well from year 2 to year 3 (similar to W Justice)
What he needs are some reps with the #1 and some Confidence, He get’s his opportunity this week
vesus a veteran Pass Rusher who is off to a good start this year in J Abraham.. It will be a good test and will he get beat a couple of times?? I am sure he will, but he’ll battle and fight hard and I think at the end of the day/game, will show that he has some real promise.

Herreman’s injury issues are with his Feet and Ankles and doesn’t really have the lateral mobility
to play the Tackle position..Nick Cole still has the Knee swelling issues and could play guard/center in a back-up duty or in case of injury. R Wells has been a little slow to pick-up the playbook and is not in the best of shape stamina wise could play back-up Guard. A Howard has a minor lower back injury and probably won’t be able to see any action until after the bye week…
McGlynn,MJG, Justice and Dunlap are the only heathly O/Lineman on the Team right now…
I guess it was a good thing to carry 10 O/Lineman to open the season ..

The Feet/Ankle were still healing from summer surgery which kept him out of camp and some pres-season games. In last weeks game vs the 49ers, he did tweak his knee also..
So he is going to be banged up all season it appears…
