With Trade Deadline Looming: Should Birds Listen To Offers For QB’s?

Let’s get past the “we’d never trade either player,” and the “what if one goes down with injury?” and let’s be pragmatic about this.
At the start of this past off-season the Eagles were diligently trying to trade Michael Vick.

A little less than a month ago, after his tremendous play warranted the move, Andy Reid named Michael Vick his starting quarterback. In that same press conference Reid refused to rule out a Kevin Kolb trade prior to the Oct. 19 NFL trade deadline.

Well that deadline is approaching, and we are no closer to knowing the Eagles long term starter, nor if either will be here after this year.

If you asked Reid what his views are on the situation he would dodge the question by parroting his newest catchphrase ‘it’s a beautiful thing’ like a WWE Pro Wrestler at the end of a promo.  But what would it take to trade either Michael Vick or Kevin Kolb at tomorrow’s trade deadline? What would be the breaking point?

Would it take a second round pick?
Two seconds?
A first rounder?
What would it take?

Of course, conventional wisdom would say the Eagles will not move either of their quarterbacks. The fact is that we are in this current situation because both players went down with injury. Trading either away would be incredibly risky. However this is an enigmatic situation and the Eagles under Joe Banner and Reid have a history of going against the grain when it comes to roster moves.

There are struggling teams around the league in desperate need of a top-shelf signal caller, all of which could make a lot of sense for one or both of the players.

Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills for instance are currently starting Ryan Fitzpatrick, who simply is not a starting caliber player. If the Eagles are dead-set on Vick as their starter, Kolb could make an immediate impact on an offense that has a decent receiving corp. and a talented rookie running back in C.J. Spiller. Furthermore the Bills have a history of buying high when it comes to quarterbacks, trading a first round pick to the New England Patriots for QB Drew Bledsoe in 2002.

Carolina Panthers
Before training camp Michael Vick had expressed interest in joining the Carolina Panthers …mainly because he liked the uniforms. “Well, you know, it’s close to home,” Vick said during an interview with an Atlanta radio station earlier this year.  “I like the uniforms.  You get to play against Atlanta twice a year.  Ain’t nothing better than playing against your former team, right?  So, yeah, that would be a good look, it would be a good look.” The Panthers have not expressed any interest in Vick to this point; however they have struggled to find a capable QB since Jake Delhomme’s playoff breakdown in 2009.

They first turned to incumbent Matt Moore this season, before later anointing rookie Jimmy Clausen the starter. Moore is a streaky and underwhelming player, who has had more bad stretches than good, while Clausen has showed that he is not yet ready to be an NFL starter. Vick would make tremendous sense to an offense that directly mirrors the ‘Three-Headed-Monster’ running attack that led the league in rushing while he was in Atlanta. Like Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett, Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are both game-breaking running backs that if teamed with Vick’s dynamic play, could quickly pay dividends.

Cleveland Browns
We’ve seen the Cleveland-Philadelphia Pipeline resurface recently, with the lateral-talent trade of running backs Mike Bell for Jerome Harrison. It’s not crazy to think that this trade was a direct result of reopened talks between the two teams about Kolb. The Browns reportedly had strong interest in Kolb leading up to the 2010 draft weekend; however those talked quickly dissipated with the trade of Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins. The Browns have a solid offensive line, and recently discovered a diamond in the rough in bruising RB Peyton Hillis.  Kolb would have to get acclimated to the Browns system, but one thing would be certain, he wouldn’t be looking over his shoulder.

When the trade deadline passes at 4:00 pm the Eagles will most likely still have two starting quarterbacks and only one position. But is that the best move here? At one point during this off-season, pre-season or regular season, the Eagles have discussed trading both of their QBs.
What has changed from that point to this point?
They proved they are both stars?
…Wouldn’t that help their trade value?
I think that is closer to the definition of ‘a beautiful thing.’

I don’t see either QB this season being traded in 2010 for injury reasons alone and for how well they are both playing. I also think it would be most difficult for any QB to be traded almost halfway thru a season, to a new team and learn an entirely different system, with new WR’s, Coaches & Schemes and expect to be able to contribute for that new team as a Starter in any significant way for the 2010 season. With that said, I do believe that one of them will be gone after the 2010 Season
Since both are playing well and I think the Eagles FO/Coaches AR/MM will determine over the next 4-5 weeks on who the long term QB will be and then act accordingly after the Season… If It’s Kolb, they extend his contract and let Vick walk in Free-agency, If it’s Vick, they extend a 3-4 year contract to him and then trade Kolb in the off-season. It will be tempting to move one now,but with injury situations to both players, I don’t think you can count on having 1 remain healthy for the remainder of the season..
Many of the bad teams who will end up with top selections in the 2011 Draft, have already committed to young QB’s like the Browns with McCoy, Rams with Bradford, Lions with Stafford, Buccaners with Freeman, Panthers with Clausen so most of these teams will not be in the market for a QB. Teams that will be in the Market for a QB for 2011 will be the Bills,Vikings,Raiders,Jaguars and possibly the 49ers,Seahawks,Chiefs,Redskins (depending if they extend McNabb which is not a given) There are at least 3 potential Franchise Type of QB’s in this years Draft, Players like Locker,Luck,Mallet, will all go in the Top 10-12 Selected

On a Side note,
Carolina Panthers Owner (Jerry Richardson) has gone on record stating that it would have to be over his “dead-body” that the the Panthers would pursue M Vick. Richardson is very old school and stays clear away from players with shady pasts.

I’d trade Vick for a 2nd or 3rd rounder in a heartbeat.

You’re not winning the Super Bowl this year. Not even close. There’s no reason to hang on to Vick. Let’s see what Kolb can do over the season. Get what you can for Vick before he walks.

1 talked about move would be to trade Vick to the Raiders for Pro-Bowler CB Asmagoah
Al Davis loves the Deep ball and speed which Vick would bring them instantly and could make the Raiders competitive in a very weak AFC West Division in afew weeks time but The Eagles would never go for Asmagoah’s contract as it is presently written and would only be interested if the Raiders were to buy out Asmagoah deal and have him make a new deal with the Eagles which is very unlikely on his/agents part…

Obviously you keep both of them. But your article is written to make us choose one to trade.

Vick has more talent and is a more proven QB with some playoff experience. The NFL is manufactured pressure. Going to prison is real world pressure. Plus Vick still owes $20 million in debt. He’ll be highly motivated until that debt is paid off. Sign Vick and trade Kolb for a 2nd and a 3rd. Kafta seems like he’s going to be as good as Kolb in the future.

Plus I really like the Eagles new GM. There will be less wasted draft picks in the future with this guy running the show. Less torn ACL guys, Division III projects and pop warner all-americans.

The Carolina Panthers are total garbage and can use a Quarterback. Kolb’s stock will never be as high as it is now and maybe we can recoup that 2nd round pick or get a player that can help us in the linebacker or along the offensive line. With Vick on his way back and an improved offensive line we can beat any team in the NFC…..Reid do the right thing before it strikes midnight and Kolb’s football cart turns into a pumpkin. Let’s get baby arm out of here before he hang another one of our weapons out to dry. Carolina get on the phone so we can go forward with a proven, strong armed QB with speed. A few pro bowls under his belt and when he went down was player as good as the top 3 QB’s in the league.I thik this Titans game shows what Kolb is all about.

Panthers would not be interested in Kolb for they have draft picks J Claussen and M Pike on their roster who they like both of them moving forward. They traded their 2nd Round pick to New England to move up in the draft this year and really don’t have anything of value to offer the Eagles …
Coach J Fox and his entire staff will be fired after the season with Bill Cowher coming on board.
With some tweaking and and 2 years worth of Draft picks, Cowher can bring the Panthers back to being a playoff team in a relatively short period of time
They average 25 years of age and are younger than the Eagles. They have 3 solids RB’s in Williams,Stewart and Goodson (Williams or Stewart could be had)
They have a young O/Line with 3 pretty good lineman in J Gross, R Kalil and J Otah (who is hurt)
No proven WR after Steve SMith but have 2-3 promising players in LaFell,Gettis and Edwards
who are all 1st year players. They are weak at TE with mostly blocking type of players but have a TE Rosario who could be a playmaker if he played in a more open Offense.
Defense they have needs along the DT/DE/Safety positions and of course better depth at CB/LB
Whoever replaces Coach Fox has a good, young, talented team to work with, Of course it all is contingent on getting good play from the QB position which they don’t have this season..
being a running team first and physical, this would be right up Cowhers Alley where he would not have to re-build an entire roster to fit his scheme and style of coaching.. We’ll see…

The right move would be to keep both of these guys til the end of the season…Trade Kolb during the off season! Kolb is looking good, but Vick brings more to the table that opposing defenses have to worry about….I believe the Eagles would be in no rush to trade Kolb this season, since he would still have to play through the 2011 season. If the Eagles aren’t interested in keeping Vick next season, I believe a trade would happen for him before the deadline….Otherwise, if they dont franchise him at the end of the season, they would be getting nothing for him…A repeat of Clevelands Cavs, Lebron James, “the decision”

Unless there is a significantly better offer for Kolb, trade Vick. My reasoning? Simply because I doubt we will resign him. Per Vick’s financial/legal obligations and his desire to get paid, again, i think he is going to go to the highest bidder. (within reason). Additionally, the birds will need to sign Jackson, amongst other players.

In the NFL theres the franchise tag, if the eagles franchise him, he wont be able to negotiate with other teams, therefore there wouldnt be a highest bidder scenario…NFL is different from NBA in that regards…

I would begin with: a first rounder and a stud DT for Kolb. A first rounder for Vick. All options are on the table. If you can’t hang with the above then HANG UP! The Eagles can live without trading either one.

need to have two good QBs – the team has a great situation. Worry about going forward next season AFTER this season. Unless you are convinced you can trust Kafka to start 3 or 4 games, or that Jeff Garcia can be picked up, you keep Vick and Kolb. Already had both QBs knocked out of games.

btc – songs only knows one song – if he posts its only to break Kolb’s balls. HE is still hung up the birds traded his man crush, and Allen has sucked so bad, and Kolb and Vick have been horrible and his former flame is leading the league in every passing category

I’d have to afree with RealTalk. We will get more for Kevin in return in a trade. His age and he is showing promise for the future as a starting QB. But I think Vick fits this system better regardless of what lame ass Howard Eskin says. He sucks off Kolb anyway! But yeah, we cant keep both past next season. Kolb would be better off somewhere like Minnesota or San Fran, or Buffalo…where he would have the time to kind of sit in the pocket and make his reads. See, here in Philly, thats possible but not a given. For the most part, a QB here requires mobility and fast thinking…all which Michael Vick has mastered. For the 5th time today, Michael Vick is the best decision moving forward. Why? Because he can do all of what Kevin can do AND THEN SOME.

If you franchise him though, he gets paid an average of the top 5 QB’s in the league. Maybe I am in the minority, but I do not think either of these guys are worth that type of money. If anything, we may end up using the franchise tag on DJax.

Y’all are complaining about how Songz is harping on Kolb, but you are harping on Songz and on his balls. If thats how the man feels, so be it. He’s entitled to his own opinion just like you are. I’m not sold on Kolb either, Why should I be? I’ve been watching Michael Vick since Virginia Tech, I know what he can do and thats why Im more confident with him as the future QB of this team. Kolb has played 1 GREAT game and that being Sunday when he threw for 326 yards and 1 INT along with 3 TDs. Vick has done numbers in the same ballpark with 0 INTs in games back to back. Last Sunday was also the 1st time Kolb put up a big number score. Vick has led the team to more than 27 points in both games he played in and damn near brung us back from a Green Bay Blowout. Open your eyes people. Dont let Kevin’s 1 Great game make you forget what Vick can/has/will do.

Vick looks good, but he is also injury prone. 5 bulked up to stay out of the trainers room, Michael may want to try something similar. If any recalls, I certainly do as I drafted Vick in fantasy that year, Michael was always in and out of the lineup. (though always starting which killed me). hence the emergence of Schaub.

Big Boss, with all due respect, I think you’re a bit confused. Desean is under contract passed next year, so the franchise tag wouldn’t even be an option until a few years for him. That has nothing to do with Vick. They can franchise vick this offseason regardless of Djax.

Dizzy – Not sure how long you’ve been reading this site, cause i know you’re new. But Songs was all over this site preseason guaranteeing that the Eagles wouldn’t win more than 4 games. He was trashing Kolb and calling him a bum and he only EVER said something positive when Vick started to light it up. That’s the only reason he gets sh^t from people (myself certainly included). He’s definitely entitled to be an unbridled Vick fan and to have his opinion about what the team should do at the QB position. But he expresses himself in such a bullheaded, one-tracked mind way that it pisses many (myself too) off. He doesn’t acknowledge anything at all about Kolb, and he thinks that Michael Vick is better than Jesus, Zeus, Superman and Michael Jordan combined, on steroids.

And as for your Vick/Kolb statements, one thing that you have continually discounted is the fact that Kolb is far more accurate than Vick – the stats show it. Vick can do many things Kolb cannot, but Kolb CAN do somethings Vick can’t – stay in the pocket and be very accurate.

I”m not saying I want one or the other – I’d be happiest if they keep both – they both get injured – everyone does – and you need a backup. I simply cannot buy the argument that going into the playoffs, this team will have a better shot with only one of these two QBs on the roster. Either is liable to get injured in the playoffs, and I want to have both. There’s no consequence for keeping both on the roster. Period. There’s a huge potential consequence for giving one away.

RealTalk777
RealTalk777
October 19, 2010 3:31 pm

you make good point…however the stats are scewed! The passes that Vick attempts are a little further down the field on most occasions, in which you really can’t compare the accuracy of both QB’s…Vick is 61% Kolb is 67%, with Vicks running ability I think that levels the playing field dramatically…plus Vick can get the ball to the receivers 50 yards down the field in stride! Kolb is solid, but be real, there are more pros in Vicks game than there is in Kolbs!

Songs – (no hate, serious question here) – if you get your wish, and they trade Kolb somewhere (lets say for the sake of the discussion that they get a #1 for him – the best case scenario) – then we have Vick at QB. Great! – He’s a stellar athlete and a very good QB.

Let’s say that he doesn’t let the starting job and more money go to his head and revert to his former ‘ego immortal I can get away with anything I want as long as it’s not hanging with a few specific people and involving dogs’ self – which would likely lead him into legal and or league trouble….

Let’s just talk about what we’d have on the field at the Qb position then. I’m not convinced that he wouldn’t let it go to his head and try to do too much with his feet/deep balls – that he’d become undisciplined and it might cost us some games. He has openly stated that he’s on a mission to prove people wrong, to get a second – real starter, with no competition, status/franchise QB – status. He has his ego in his mind as #1. It’s his plan to shock the world and prove something about Michael Vick. He’s saying all the right things about the team, and it’s impressive, but can we trust that going forward and if he’s really given the keys to the franchise?

AND BOTTOM LINE SONGS – answer me this question and don’t shy away from it – WHAT HAPPENS THIS SEASON IF WE DON’T HAVE KOLB (traded him away), WE’RE IN THE PLAYOFFS, AND VICK GOES DOWN? You want Kafka back there? You want Desean and McCoy in the wildcat as our base offense? Those would be the only options…..unless you think that someone would trade a high pick AND a comparable QB to Kolb FOR KOLB – not going to happen. So we have an injury prone and ego unbalanced QB with a lesser backup thank Kolb – not as good as a situation as we have now.

Kolb has clearly faced better competition and put up equal numbers to Vick.

Vick is older and bound to continue to get injured if he runs. If he doesn’t run, he’s worthless.

Vick is also a freeagent next year and will demand big $.

Trade him while you can.

A couple of likely scenario’s after the 2010 Season

#1) B Farve will retire for good from the Vikings leaving them in a market for an experienced QB
#2) If McNabb doesn’t lead the Redskins to the playoffs (and I don’t think he will) the Redskins will
not extend him a contract making him a Free-Agent

Basing on what could happen if the above are true…
Vikings would love to have Kolb play QB for them and have some talent and drafts to offer in return
McNabb would most likely play for hometown team Arizona Cardinals who need a QB to take advantage of their biggest asset… WR Larry Fitzgerald.., their Ownership/Coaches are under the gun to maintain playoff type of team after being mired in mediocrity for the last 25 years before Curt Warner came to town. Now with Warner retired, they don’t want to fall back into mediocrity which is what they are without a good QB.. McNabb would be a perfect fit for them
Vick I still think could remain with the Eagles for there are only a handful of teams that he’s a good fit for and Philly is one of them. The Oakland Raiders would be another as well as the Vikings a possibility (especially with if they keep WR R Moss)
I’ve stated since this QB carousel started, by Thanksgiving, We will know who the future QB is for the Eagles for the remainder of this season and for the future.(barring anymore injuries to either player). We won’t know anything beforehand, but both QB’s finish the 2010 on the Eagles Roster

The Falcons…. Lets not forget Kolb beat the FALCONS…. they weren’t a real 4-1 team anyway. You have to be out of your mind to start Kolb over Vick. Vick doesn’t get hurt against the Redskins, he more than likely wins that game, beats the 49ers, and he wins the Falcons game and this is a non issue. Vick is 30 years old this is the prime time for him. Why would I want to not play a 3 time pro bowl player who every one has said is playing better than he ever has in his career for Kevin Kolb? The organization comes out cheaper because we all know as eagle fans this FO doesn’t want to pay anybody. If Vick gets in trouble, have that in the contract. If you’re discounting the falcons that you base your theory of Vicks performance by what he has done this year. You cannot have it both ways, praising Vick for beating up on bad teams then proclaiming the falcons defense as garbarage, thus discounting Kolb’s performance. Vick is going to start no matter what in a few weeks. Until then, sit back and just take note. Kolb could end up going for 300 again for his 3rd time in 6 starts.

Paul Mancini

A lot depends on what’s happening behind the Scenes that we fans won’t ever know about…
What discussions with Vick’s Agent/Advisors have there been, if Vick’s group is looking to secure a 4-5 Deal for Mannin/Brady type of money, then he will not remain in Philadelphia plain and simple.
If Philly gets a home-town discount for taking the chance and giving him a 2nd opportuntiy to get his career and life back on track where he has received the best coaching of his career and is surrounded by the best weapons he has ever played with and has a great channce of winning for the near future, then I think the Eagles have a good shot of retaining him..If Vick and his advisors want to cash in on the the good season & story of the NFL so far, then he will play the market to go for the biggest bucks .. Who knows the answer to this outside of Vick and his advisors and of course Lurie,Banner,Roseman & Reid..probably no one…
Bottom line, If the Eagles don’t feel they can resign Vick within reasonable contract terms, they will play Kolb and move forward with him..If the Eagles feel they can resign Vick, then they play him… So whoever you see on the field playing against the Colts after the BYE week will most likely be the Eagle QB for the remainder of season and for the future. (Kolb will start this week for sure)

I think you are confused with my comments…people are discounting the teams Vick has beat this season…why can’t I do the same for the teams that Kolb has faced…Its only right…in all fairness!! I never said the teams Vick beat were bad teams…the Jags’ are a pretty decent team, they did get a W over the Colts and they are currently a .500 team…The Lions have played every team they’ve faced this year pretty tough…(green bay and Giants in particular)

The falcons played terrible defense period! Jason Campbell from the Raiders could have had a good day against that defense the Falcons put on the field! I wasn’t trying to knock Kolb, but I’m not going to praise him and think hes great because the coaches and rest of the team put him in a good position to win! I still haven’t seen Kolb execute a two minute drive for us…Vick has turned two, 2 minute drives into TD’s in two different games!

For argument sake, Michael Vick is better than Kevin Kolb, period!!! Go ask any defense who they want to face and see what the answer would be…

That they gave Vick way more money than most backups get (and that’s what he was at the time). And that they gave Weaver more money than any FB in league history. Celek got an extension. They paid Jason Peters 60 Mil (oh how cheap). Winston Justice got an extension. They gave Kerse, Howard, Cole, both Andrews brothers, Tra and Runyan, Westbrook, McNabb – a lot of money – all of them.

The facts are stacked way up against the argument that the Eagles are cheap. Where’s your proof or do you just want to pick out Desean and ignore the CBA/30% rule and the track record that they lock up rising stars for long term deals? What’s it going to be, are you going to look at the facts or pick one case and ignore the extenuating circumstances?

Schiller-since when do any of these threads end up relating to the actual article. We’ve both been posting long enough to know how this works out. I love watching people argue common sense on here, kinda funny.

well – point WELL taken. But dizzy was mixing up trading Vick with Starting Kolb while both are still on the team – two different things.

So, to give my answer to the question the article illuminates..no, you don’t, not this year. Make a move in the offseason if you can but as for the remainder of this year leave it alone, it’s not broken.

Dizzy – Do you admit that Vick has a horrible record of staying healthy and handling success well? Those are risk factors that have to come into play when making decisions about the future past this season. It’s hard to argue against playing Vick when he’s healthy on this team this year. But going forward, you cannot discount the risk factors with Vick that I just mentioned. Do you take them into consideration?

You know this organization is real big on picking up guys on there last year of there contract.SHILLER!!! WE have a bunch of undrafted offensive linemen and most of them are garbage… The last one we actually drafted high and who was pretty good was Shawn Andrews… ANd Herramans was a late draft pick…. And for years SHILLER we always opt outta the first round to get late picks in the draft to avoid picking up a 1st round talent and first round pay SHILLER! Come on SHILLER!!!!!!! read between the LINES!!! We have been playing Musical Chairs with these offensive linemen for years picking up the A.Q. Shipley’s and expect them to be good com on SHILLER

And Winston Justice was a 2nd round pick and we all thought he was garbage. But to tell you the truth he deserves the contract that Jason Peters has now… Shiller you and I all know that the eagles dont wanna pay offensive lineman because if they did we wouldnt have this issue with all this horrible talent like the Greg Isdanders come on!!!

I’m sure the Eagles have listened to trade offers for both QBs. There apparently have been no blockbuster, no-brainer offers made or else a deal would have been done already. Right now both Kolb and Vick have too much value to the Eagles to trade one. There would need to be some quality veteran backup they could get (I hesitate to mention Jeff Garcia but he’s the only one that comes to mind). Plus they likely won’t get what they want right now for either player. During the off season of course one of them will get moved but nothing now.

For the Record, If the projected Starting Line were actually playing and still on the team (Stacey Andrews) The Eagles would have one of the highest paid O/Lines in the NFL with each starter earning over $1 Million per Season… C’mon, get your facts right please…
LT Peters LG Herremans C Jackson RG S Andrews RT Justice
About the only team that pays all 5 of their O/L Starters in excess of $1 Million would be the Giants & maybe the Vikings (though I think their Center is less than $1 Million)

jroc – which undrafted Olinemen are you referring to? Jackson? Sure, he was undrafted, but he’s played the position quite well for a long time. He’s also on IR and has been replaced with a drafted player who has played well. What’s the problem there? And the other undrafted Olineman on the roster… uh… which ones? I don’t see any. If you are saying that you don’t think mid-lower round draft picks are any good, than I say Ok, you don’t like Trent Cole, Brent Celek, Asante Samuel, Tom Brady, Marceus Colston, Terrell Owens, Desean Jackson, Nate Allen, you don’t like any of those players…. interesting… I think they are all really good and it doesn’t matter that they weren’t drafted in the first round.

And as for picking up guys in the last year of their contact, um, that’s when guys are available. who are you talking about with that anyway?

You say ‘for years we always opt outta the first round’ – uh, they did that twice. Two whopping times! How is that ‘for years’? And it payed off for them pretty nicely. We’re not having this conversation about Kolb and Vick if they didn’t go get Kolb.

You’re just on that hate bandwagon about them being cheap and you’re spewing BS that shows you go off of what you hear from other haters, you’re not looking at the facts.
