Major Dollars Are On The Line For Vick, Kolb & Jackson

The rest of the season is not only going to be huge for the Eagles as a football team, but it’s going to be extremely important for the futures of Michael Vick, Kevin Kolb and DeSean Jackson.  One or two of these guys will be signed to big long-term contracts or one or two of them will either leave via free agency or be traded.

They have to all be fully aware of just how high the stakes are.  I’m talking about possible $20 million dollar bonuses or more being on the line.

Vick is the starter right now, but there’s no guarantee he will start the rest of the season.  If he doesn’t play well or is sidelined by injury, Kolb will take back over and  it could persuade the Eagles not to hitch themselves to him.

The former number one pick in the draft needs to show the Birds that he can perform at or near the level he was playing at earlier in the season, but that’s not enough.  He also needs to show them that he can avoid taking killer hits from defenders and stay healthy.

Vick will be a free agent when the season ends, so the front office will have to make a decision about signing him a bit earlier than Kolb, whom they have signed for another season.  I’m sure the Eagles wouldn’t want to be negotiating with Vick as a free agent, and coming off a monster season.  If Vick is the Eagles guy, the negotiations will start in a month or month and a half.

Kolb won’t get the chance to show what he can do on the field, if Vick stays healthy and plays like he was performing earlier in the campaign.  The team’s current backup quarterback will probably be traded if Vick plays well enough to get a long-term contract.

But Kolb can’t assume anything.  He has to be ready to take over and lead this team to victory, in case Vick goes down due to injury or because he’s playing poorly.

Everybody knows that the Birds want stability at the quarterback position, but they’re not going to jump the gun.  Andy Reid, Howie Roseman and Joe Banner are going to let the smoke clear and see who’s standing.

As for Jackson, I don’t think the Eagles will give him that huge long-term deal if he were to go down again.  I don’t know how anxious they are about signing him to the mega-deal right now because he hasn’t proven he can stay healthy.

There’s no question that his explosiveness makes them a much better football team.  In addition to being a great big-play receiver, he also runs back punts and is lethal on reverses.  Jackson’s mere presence in the lineup creates opportunities for the rest of the Eagles weapons.

Still the question remains.  Can he stay healthy?

I could see where Vick and Jackson could either stay here and both sign mega-deals or each leave town after they each went down again with injuries.  If Kolb becomes the starter and Jackson goes down again, I could see them saying good-bye to  Jackson, because his value wouldn’t be as high since Kolb isn’t as good of a deep thrower.

One or two of these guys will break the bank at the end of the season, but we’re going to have to wait a month or two to see which one or ones it will be.

Vick and Jackson are getting paid no matter what. The Eagles took the PR hit for Vick and now he has showed he can play. The Eagles OLine or injury will be to blame for any relapse, Vick is a box office draw and would put people in the seats and sell Jerseys at Detroit or any of the other perinial losers in the NFL.

Jackson could reunite with McNabb if he does not stay in Philly. Or any other team who has a QB with a strong arm.

Baby Arm? who really cares.

Come on the guy who needs to be shipped out is Kevin Kolb! The guy isn’t good enough to be a starter… He’s like a Charlie Frye or Derek Anderson a solid backup… If Vick plays well the rest of the season you have to offer a valuable long-term contract…. As for D-Jack 2 concusions in two years yes you have to be a bit worried but com’ on, The eagles havn’t drafted a probowl Wr. in God knows when so you have to give him a deal because he is the most explosive weapon in football. He’s made this team better and we all know that!!!! D-JacK is only 22yrs. old and he will develope more as the years come…. I see D-Jack…… being with his size maybe the next Marvin Harrison…. I dont see him being shipped out and if he is it will be a major mistake and some team like Dallas or Washington will pick him up like Eddie Long at a Boy SCOUT meeting!!! LOL

Spot on G,
The Only player missing in all of this is former QB D McNabb…
What becomes of him, does Redskins offer him a extension, does he go Free-Agent Route and
have Vikings/Cardinals bid for his Services.. How about If Coach Childress gets fired in Minnesota
and then they bring in a whole new Coaching staff/system,etc,etc

Yeah, I would think that that even if the eagles didn’t want to go with Vick after the season they would place some kind of tag on him so if he were to sign else where they would get some kind of compensation for his services. If he has a big second half of the season I don’t see him going anywhere. Jackson need to be locked up immediately. You can’t let a guy like him go.

Great article, I couldn’t agree more. I hope everyone can stay healthy, thus producing some trade value, but I do have my concerns. I don’t want Vick to be McNabb, but I would like him to put himself in less of a position to get hurt. Heart, competitiveness, stupidity, etc. Whatever you want to call it, vick has to avoid big hits. Additionally, the eagles need to forgo having DJax return punts and stop sending him across the field on his routes.

Kolb is being paid 12.2 mill this season, to be the backup QB…Kolb is due to make 1.3mill next season…(Kolb will be the one out) I think the Eagles were taking their chances with Kolb this season…and they were not impressed! Vick has already received the coaches support, thats why he is starting QB…Vick hasnt been injury prone throughout his career…yes he’s had some bumps and bruises (2003 did miss majority of that year) but other than that season, he’s been a durable QB…

There’s too many pieces you lose if Vick isn’t signed…The production of the running game suffers, playmaking ability behind an inconsistant offensive line, Leadership, the deep balls thrown becomes rare, and the kicker, get rid of DJAX because Kolb scenario…you lose absolutely nothing if Kolb isn’t signed! Desean signed a 4 year contract in 2008, so Birds have him for another year anyway. He might hold out I suppose, but I don’t think he has as much leverage as he did last year after his 2nd concussion….and his numbers are down a bit from last year.

Kolb is also under contract for another year.
As for Vick…I think there are difficulties that have to be overcome….

If they put franchise tag on Vick, they have to pay him 16.5 million and I believe it all counts against the cap. I don’t think Roseman is going to want to do that.
If that’s the case, then perhaps the only option for Vick is to sign him before the season ends…if they let it go to the end there’s going to be a bidding war. So….the qustion, how many games is enough of a sample to decide to shell out the big bucks? Eli got 97 million over 7 years. Now I’m not a Vick fan, but even I think he’s better then the luckiest QB to ever play. Are the birds going to shell out 100 million after watching Vick start 4 games? 5? I have my doubts…

So do the birds have these 3 choices (all unappealing to some degree):

1 – Sign him to 100 million after next 4-6 games (unappealing),
2 – Get bid up by several teams for him at end of season (unappealing).
3 – Put Franchise tag, pay 16.5 for one year all against cap (unappeaing)

To Paul:
Im from VA and the news around is that Mcnabb is another Jason Campbell…. Jake Plummer had horrible games behind shanahan and he was never pulled late in a game….. Mcnabb has been a C average Qb this season, and I think he will no longer be in washington!!! Shanahan like’s guys who are (in shape) but all you heard all season that Mcnabb’s workouts where like “Bootcamp”etc.etc. But we all know Mcnabb doesn’t play well with the 2minute drill! You would think after all these years being a pro Qb you would know how to command a 2minute drill… But this is the same Qb who didnt know that there was such thing as double overtime!! LOL

@Vinnie

you are having trouble understanding that their minds are already made up…Everyone was willing to give Kolb the franchise tag because of his two starts last year…Why can’t the franchise tag be put on Vick after 4 games? LOL, C’mon! Whats funny to me is that Vick didnt have the oppurtunity to even challenge Kolb for the job in training camp, Vick had no other choice but to produce and take the job when given the oppurtunity. Also, Vick will most likely give the Eagles a discount because they took the risk on him. The only issue of signing Vick in the next month or so, may be Kolb frustrations, will he continue to work and be ready if his named is called? Eagles may be talking to Vick now as we speak, who knows what discussions are being held behind closed doors…

I’ve read some articles about the Redskins being highly interested in Vick…The game in which Vick was injured was quoted as “being and audition for Vick”…If Vick lands on the Skins, the division just took on a totally different look…The Cowboys won’t be bad next season, Giants show no signs of becoming a bad team,..and if McNabb goes to Minnesota, then we have to possibly get past two of our former QB’s with Kolb to make it to the SB…LMAO

And besides Vick has a pretty good resume as a starter… Yea you can bring up facts like “he doesnt play well in the cold”, but you know what I’ll take Vick over 10 Kevin Kolb’s anytime!!! STFU!!! I never said the season doesn’t have to be played out…I’m simply pointing out that you all wanted to crown Kolb on his TWO starts last season. Why can’t Vick be crowned based on his 4 games played? its only fair! .Also, that you lose more if Vick is not resigned as opposed to Kolb…do you disagree and if so please provide some points!!!.what I’m tired of is your stupid ass comments, when you have really nothing good to add to any discussion…you say some are ready to spend Luries money…How bout this Lurie is spending 12million on a backup QB as we speak…Who is the starting QB for the Eagles? McCoy,DJAX are two key pieces to Eagles offense, and they are not the same players when Vick is absent! Even Maclin as well (4TD’ catches with Vick) 2TD catches with Kolb and both were in the ATL game…The players on this team fit with Vick better than any option at the Eagles have at QB!

Right now it is COMMON SENSE that the Eagles are better this year an in future with Mike Vick rather than Kevin Kolb! I am tired of YOUR stupidity in particular!

The question of whether to sign Vick, Jackson long term has not been decided. Their play over the rest of the season will determine it, but a lot of you have already spent the money foolishly. On some level you want to pull for Vick, did his crime, others have done worse and have gotten away with it, paid his dues like a man, and now has the chance to be an elite qb in the NFL. On a lot of levels you have to respect his climb back. Not Jackson, who appears like a punk and although a dangerous playmaker, he is too small and not suited for Reid’s wc offense, short passes in leiu of running the ball. But this commentary about Kolb, like trade him for “anything”, or “he can’t play”‘ etc. Is what I called it: stupidity. He may be your Eagles quarterback for the future

J roc and songs…I’m out of my mind? “where in the hell you get those figures?” Ummmm….I dunno….from all the other contracts QBs are signing….
Its 2010, not 2005.

Eli Manning 7 yr 106 million with 35 million guaranteed
Matt Stafford 6 yrs 72 million 42 million guaranteed
Bradford 6 yrs 78 million with 50 guaranteed

Jeez Matt Cassel signed for 6 yrs 68 million with 28 million guaranteed….You honestly think Vick is going to sign for less than that Jroc??

Vick hits the open market and he’s going to get a 100 million offer. So only way to solve this is to offer him a contract before season ends. I am just questioning whether the Birds are going to shell out 40-50 million guaranteed after a guy plays 6 games.
