Eagles Hold On For 26-24 Win, As Vick Does It With His Arm And His Legs

This was a great win for the Birds, but they let the Colts stay in it because they didn’t put the ball in the end zone enough in the first half.  They need to get better but I think they know they can.   All in all, it was a quality win over a good football team.

Michael Vick had another superb game for the Birds.  He made the great throw to DeSean Jackson on a quick post route for the first score. He put the ball where only DeSean Jackson could catch it.

That deep throw out of end zone to Jackson was an unbelievable throw.  Again this guy can throw the ball 60 yards with a flick of his wrist.

Those third down conversions by Vick in the second half were a thing of beauty.  It’s amazing how he made the stick throw to Jackson on the first down and before that he had hit Jeremy Maclin with a dart.

On top of some great throws, Vick did what only he can do when he tucked the ball under his arm and made big runs for first downs on third down.

I also loved the way he got out of bounds, but he still has to go a bit farther to go when it comes to avoiding the big hits.

Vick completed 17 of 29 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown for a 93.8 quarterback rating.  On top of a nice day from the pocket the lefthander  totaled 74 yards on 10 rushes.

You can see why Andy Reid was so happy about getting both Jackson and Vick back into the lineup because they make plays that can’t be coached.  Again you see what a difference Jackson’s speed could make.

Kurt Coleman didn’t mean to hit Collie in the head.  He hit him with his shoulder first, but him momentum caused him to hit him in the head.   I don’t think they’re going to fine him for it, but I do understand why they called the foul.

I’ll get into that later.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS We Beat the Fucking Colts AWWWWWWW!!! First of all the refs were horrible!!! That had to be one of the worst and I mean the worst games called EVER!!!!! They kept the Colts in the whole game just about!!!!! We out played them on both ends and the refs kept them in the game! Second good game from Vick!!! He was accurate with a majority of his throws, made plays with his legs…. I’m impressed with his decision’s with the ball in his posession! He basically ran the clock pretty well in the 4th for 6min. and change! Wow it’s good to see a Qb in Eagle green run the clock down (jab at #5), to give Peyton short time on the field!!!!! One thing I didn’t like was Stewart Bradley on third downs! He hasn’t gotten over the injury last year and he doesn’t have the speed that he use to have…. Game ball to Demetri Patterson he covered Reggie Wayne one of the top 3 recievers in the leauge! He gets my nod at starter!!! Asante 2 picks didn’t bite off Peyton’s pump fakes goooood Job #22!!!!! Deshawn what a way to come back and contribute!!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO EAGLESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Finally we beat the COLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JIM JOHNSON I KNOW YOUR PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like you said, this win was against a quality team.

The Colts came in with a very strong inside/outside game plan. They began with two deep throws to stretch the field, then proceeded to throw as many as 15-20 bubble screens and quick hitches. They were obviously trying to draw the safeties forward and outside.

After they thought they had met their goal, the Colts began to throw down the middle and deep. They went after Patterson repeatedly, but he was up for the challenge and made play after play. I read a lot of derogatory comments about him prior to the game. He must have read them too, because he played like a man possessed.

The refs were horrible. Each of the Colts’ scores came as a direct result of penalties. I’m surprised that the refs made it out of the stadium safely. I guess we’ve “matured.”

Vick wasn’t nearly as sharp as his previous two games, but he made some very nice throws, had a few nice runs, extended some plays, and ultimately, he was the difference.

My biggest concern prior to the game remains my biggest concern at its conclusion. Reid’s play calling, in my opinion, was horrendous. I haven’t even looked at the stats, but during the third quarter, he repeatedly called 5 and 7-step drop passes. As a result, the Colts were on top of Vick before he could even set up. This forced Vick to run, which eventually spelled the Colts’ doom. But we all know that the safest place for a QB is behind the line of scrimmage, even if you’re Michael Vick.

I don’t blame Vick for taking off. It was either that or take sacks.

Reid did his best work against Atlanta by mixing up the play calls, and one would think that he learned from that success. One would think. In reality, however, he still insists on throwing pass after pass. Much to my chagrin, he’s a passaholic with history of relapse, and it will probably keep us from attending any parades in the near future.

I did not understand that penalty on Coleman. I know that it was helmet to helmet contact but you have to allow for offensive players getting knocked into defenders. And I thought he had caught the ball and taken 2 steps which made him him a runner. And he had started to put his head down. That was just a good football hit by Mikell and Collie happened to get knocked into Coleman.

I have to go back and watch the Trent Cole penalty also that kept their drive alive. I know that he was going for the ball but It seemed like he was at least partially blocked or pushed into brushing Manning’s helmet. I guess there’s zero flexibility in those calls. But that zero flexibility makes no sense to me.

My wife was even ready to kill the refs today. And normally she just patiently listens to me complain when I think calls are outrageous.

I thought the Colts defender hanging onto Vick to take him down out of bounds should have been a penalty. He could have let up and didn’t. I did like to see the Eagles get some decent licks on Manning a few times even when he got a throw off. Although there was at least one that I thought we got lucky that they didn’t call roughing the passer because it could have been considered late.

I still need to watch it again but it was nice to see Patterson step up and make some plays.

Drummer!!!!! My man you are sooo correct on the Andy reid play calling!!! That is a big concern!! It’s crunch time…. Mid-season……. and Andy Reid has to make a serious adjustment with that!!!

Another thing i was pissed about is with the DE playing against RB’s, and TE’s!!!!! The eagles have to realize that is something they have to shy away from!! And EDOGMA that was a Bullshit call on Kurt Colemen….. If that was the case so call (hitting a defenseless player) well they should have called that when Celek was hit on that 8yrd pass from Vick!!! Did anyone see that face mask on McCoy… Wtf was the refs looking at!!!! They became STEVIE WONDER when it came to the penalties against the COLTS! One Thing I enjoyed was Andy’s pass LMFAO!! When he was in highschool of what ever!!!!!! He was fucking huge!! LMAO those kids looked like dwarfs compared to him lol!

Knowing that Reid’s teams peak in December, if we stay healthy, I believe we can play with any team in the NFL. Vick is the X Factor. He covers a multitude of sins.

It wasn’t pretty and it definitely was closer than it should have been, but a win is a win is a win..
I wouldn’t go out and put a down payment on Playoff Tickets yet, buy any win over the Colts and Peyton Manning is a good one, though they were undermanned and missing some key players
but the Eagles hung in there and won a game that many times, would find a way to lose in the past

Paulman’s Top Players and Game Balls go to…

Offense – QB M Vick, WR D-Jax and LT J Peters (who I thought played maybe his best game as an Eagle.. didn’t hear too much of Dwight Freeney did you..)
Defense — CB’s D Patterson and A Samuel as well as LB E Sims, DT D Tapp & S Q Mickell
Special Teams were Solid for the most part except for Rocca’s poor punt before the half and a bad Holding/Blocking in the back penalty by E Buckley which cost them about 25 yards of Field Position
K Akers had deep kick-offs and accurate FG’s.

At 5-3 with 8 games left, this Eagle team, led by QB Vick is poised for a playoff run, I thought Vick played better as the game went along as he adjusted and got used to the speed of the game better and got his confidence and legs moving.. He got away with a couple of bad passes and missed MAcling who was open in the middle most of the game, but came up with big plays with his legs when needed…

Some concerns moving forward that need to be addressed
#1) S Bradley in Pass Coverage is simply not good enough, he constantly runs with his back to the play and never sees the pass to try to deflect.. HE should be off the field in 3rd and long passing situations
#2) The Injury to S N Allen and the overall lack of depth at the Safety Postion
#3) The injury to MJG and the poor shape and play from Nick Cole who does not look fit to be playing in an NFL Game. He was horrible tonight and R Wells needs to get up to speed or the Eagles may have to address this in some other way (maybe move W Justice inside to RG and put in Howard or Dunlap at RT or at least work on this in practice..)
#4) The amount of Penalties and especially on on 3rd Down – This is inexcusable and has to stop
#5) Kicking FG’s from the Red-Zone instead of getting TD’s- Too cutesy/genuis with the play-calling,
line them up and pound it in.. (why have Vick take more shots when it’s not necessary)

Overall this was a great win for they all are, but Eagles left many points and missed many opportunites to put the Colts away and this lack of execution, too many penalties, Red-Zone failures, is not going to beat the good teams on a consistent basis. The Colts are a playoff caliber team with Peyton Manning, but this was not a very strong team that came to Phily on a short week with many back-up players playing and almost stole a win from the Eagles..
The Good news is that Vick is back at the helm and with a game back under his belt, he should only improve as he gets his timing down.. But lots of concerns with the RG,TE, and Safety positions moving forward..

I’m with you. I don’t know if the game made a statement to anyone else, but it made a statement to me. If we stay healthy, we have a legitimate shot at this thing.

I can’t wait until we play the Giants. They will probably be our toughest opponent.

Paul

You criticized the Eagles throughout your post. Have you considered the number of penalties called against the Birds? Most of those calls were bogus and all of the Colts’ points came as a direct result of those penalties. Your post reads like we barely beat an average team. I disagree. In my opinion, we thoroughly beat a very good team, despite a ton of bad calls.

We also had a number of back-ups playing, as well a few players returning from injury. If you look at the projected starters in training camp compared to those who played today, we probably have more replacements than the Colts. Even our starting QB was a projected back-up and he’s just returning from injury.

This was not a healthy team playing against a decimated team.

The one that WR Collie got knocked out-injured on was a bad call, All Eagles Defenders takled legally with no intent to lead with their helmets but the other calls I think the Refs made were correct..
If you HIt a QB in the Head/Helmet, they are going to throw a flag everytime (Sorry T Cole)
The No “TD” calls with Avant and Vick’s 1st Attempt, were also the correct call for neither player made it in the Endzone
I look at the amount of starters missing it it’s no comparions Drummer
Colts were missing the following Starters from Offense RB J Addai, TE D Clark , WR A Gonzales, LG J Richard and the following starters on Defense DT A Johnson, OLB C Session, CB J Powers, S Bob Sanders so thats about 1/3 of their Starting line-up out.. but that’s the way it is in the NFL, you suck it up and plug in another player and move on…
I believe at the start od the game the Eagles were missing only 2 Starters (Bunkley & Hobbs)
now the Eagles did lose N Allen, MJG during the game as the Colts alos lost WR A Collie, and some others too..
I look at the AFC this Season to date and have the Ravens,Steelers,Pats,Jets, all ranked higher than the Colts with the Titans,Chiefs right behind them, so it’s a good win, but this Current Colt team is not the usual top 3 teams in the NFL as they usually are, Due to all their injuries , So I don’ ttheink everyone needs to go ga-ga , we beat the Colts (who are coming off a short week, playing a team who is coing off a bye and at their place.. To only beat them by 2 points shows how far the Eagles need to improve to be a real legitimate contendor….

You’re forgetting a lot.

We lost our starting fullback to injury
We lost our starting center
We lost stacy andrews

Our No. 1 receiver is just returning from concussion

There’s more. I have to do some research.

We’ve mixed and matched as much as any team. Every team does that. The Colts have been doing it for years, and they’ve still won. This year, they’re still considered one of the best in the league.

We’re talking about the Superbowl runner-up. Peyton Manning vs. the rookie, Nate Allen. Manning v. Dimitri Patterson. Manning’s supposed to pick them apart. It’s not like he was getting pressured. He had plenty of time. Sorry, I’m not buying.

The biggest advantage we had on them is that we were coming off a bye and they played Monday night. Other than that, all things are equal.

When your players go down or don’t perform, you back-ups must step in and do the job. That’s what ALL good NFL teams do. The Eagles, Patriots, Colts, etc. have all done it throughout the years. When we had to go the Reno Mahe’s, Levon Kirklands and even Trotter last year, they had to step up and do the job.

Oh god, We lost Stacey Andrews.. are you kidding me…
Our System was set up for a Right Hander.. Vick was the starter in Week # 2, I believe that was
like 7 weeks ago… Eagles never really had Center J Jackson this year .. he played about 1 quarter versus the Packers in week #1 when he wasn’t physically even ready to play and didn’t even see action all summer/pre-season so he’s been gone all season with McGlynn/Cole working all summver to fill-in for him…
I am glad the Eagles won, but at Home, you should win and beat the Good teams and when you have a team coming in as banged up with a 1/3 of their Starters out and on a short week sinec they played last Monday Night, I would expect a better perfomance and more than a 2 point victory…

Andrews was a projected starter. When you lose a projected starter, your back-up has to play.

When the Colts’ starters go down, their back-ups have to play. It doesn’t matter how someone gets into the starting line-up. Injuries are part of the game and each man on your 53-man roster will be counted on.

If you look at the players who went through the entire training camp as starters and compare that to those who started today, we’ve got just as many projected back-ups playing (including our starting QB).

When you add the rookies we have playing in key positions, I would have expected more from Manning. After all, he wasn’t pressured and the refs helped him as much as they could.

Paulman’s Top Teams in the NFC After Week #9

#1) Giants (6-2) The most potent and balanced Offense with a strong Pass Rush
#2) Falcons (6-2) The 2nd most potent and balanced Offence, lack Defensive playmakers
#3) Packers (6-3) The best QB in the NFC who is playing at a high level this year, getting some defenders back from injuries for the stretch run
#4) Saints (6-3) Brees is playing better but still haven’t clicked on all cylandirs yet
#5) Eagles (5-3) Big win at home, wasn’t pretty but any win over the Colts is a good one
#6) Bears (5-3) Big win on the Road against a very pesky Bills team who will beat someone soon
#7) Bucs (5-3) Have exceeded many expectations, with their young skill players in QB Freeman,
WR’s Williams, Benn, and RB Blount and 2 #1 Picks on the D/Line, this team is being built to contend for the next few seasons

The remaining teams with an outside chance to make the playoffs,
Redksins,Seahawks,Vikings,Cardinals have all been up and down almost every other week and all have issues.
The Key now is for the Eagles to win at least 3 games of the 5 NFC East Divisional games left and to at least beat the Bears and Vikings straight up and they will make it in with 10 Wins…
I think they can go 3-3 in the Dvision overall and actually beat the Bears,Vikings and Texans and finsh with 11 Wins

Paul shut the hell up…If Kolb would have beat the Colts you would be on his nuts.

It seems Vick can not get a good win without people claiming something was wrong with the teqm thqt lost. Look….We whipped their Ass and if the Refs didn’t throw flags to sustain drives, the Colts would have been lucky to get 6 points. The Colts injuries on the offensive side didn’t stop Vick from flicking the ball 60 yards in the air and getting 75 yards with his legs. If Kolb or Even Mcnabb played this same game we would have lost. MICHAEL VICK BITCHES!

Eagles definitely ratched up the pressure in the 2nd half on Manning,
He’s really doesn’t like to get hit and if you can get to him just a few times, then you can get him ratteld and he gets happy feet and starts thorwig some up for grabs/INT’s
Their play calling was poor, why did they stop rushing the ball and stop throwing the bubble screens,
I don’t know why, but I am glad they did for it didn’t appear the Eagles were going to stop it or at least slow down the EAgles pass Rush.. a Good Eagles win all the way around

Paul Mancini
Paul Mancini
November 7, 2010 10:59 pm

It took Vick a half to warm up which is about what I expected..
Like I said, I think he had an overall good game and considering he hasn’t played for over a month
a better than expected perfomance, the Eagles letfc too many points on the field and commit too many dunm penalties to beat better teams though.. I though Vick did get the ball to Maclin enough who appeared to be running wide open in the middle of the field most of the night.. Vick really needs to work on his timing on the Screen passes, he doesn’t see it or delay enough and his timing was poor on those.. He made some great runs with his legs but a couple of times had Receivers open down the field (Maclin/Avant/McCoy).. All in all, I give Vick a solid B (some of the play calling as usaul was pretty suspect and especialyl down in the Red-Zone. The play of RG N Cole was horrible after MJG went out and RT Justice starting to fade and make some penalties as he got tired…

Right now the talking heads are claiming the giants and the ravens are the best teams. The ravens are legit but we don’t play them, the giants have not really beaten anyone of note. The Eagles had a great team win yesterday. As for grading Vick, who cares, the Eagles won and that’s the bottom line. All that other negative stuff, grading QBs, penalties, poor timing.
