My Thoughts Eagles/Colts

It wasn’t pretty and the Eagles definitely had some calls that didn’t go their way. But, they were impressive and found a way to win against a good team. A badly injured team for sure, but any team with Peyton Manning is going to pose a problem.

Let’s take a look at the game:

What I liked…

-I have to give Michael Vick credit. I was thoroughly skewered earlier this year for not declaring Vick the best QB ever after a few good performances. I wanted to see more. And I have seen more. I’ve said it all along: I never wanted Vick back in the NFL. But all that aside, he is playing the QB position better than he ever has at any time in his career. He is going through his reads, using his legs for good and not evil (meaning he’s not taking off and running when the first read isn’t there) and making extremely accurate passes. This is the way Vick was supposed to end up all along.

My biggest concern earlier with Vick was his decision making. I didn’t want him to force anything or do things that would result in turnovers. And he’s not. If he keeps this up, this “rebuilding” team has a chance to do some things. Remember, no one in the NFC is that good.

-Dimitri Patterson was very impressive. This is a guy who is a fourth or fifth cornerback and was on Reggie Wayne just about the whole day. The Eagles couldn’t have asked more of him. He did a phenomenal job. And that illegal contact call was bunk, Wayne ran through him.

-Think having DeSean back in the lineup makes any difference?

-Did anyone else think of James Mungro when LeSean McCoy busted that big one to start the game?

-Brandon Graham gave us hope again. He’s been a non-factor for weeks now, but he made his presence felt yesterday. He continued to bull rush the Colts’ tackles and he just kept pushing them backwards. It was enough to get in Peyton’s face a few times and damage a throw or two.

-Excellent play by Trent Cole to essentially end the game. The officials probably made the right call based on the written rule, but that has to change. That is a 100% chicken [bleep] call, and Anne Frank could see that.

-That’s what Asante Samuel is here for.

-Good job of the offense for moving the ball a wee bit in the fourth quarter and taking some 5+ minutes off the clock. The drive didn’t result in any points, but three-and-out from that field position against Peyton Manning would probably have been suicide.

-Remember not to take David Akers for granted. This is why I say he earned the right to have a day like that against Atlanta.

-Good hold by Winston Justice on the touchdown play to Brent Celek. If you think I sound stupid (and that’s entirely possible) then you didn’t see the play. Robert Mathis was about to maul Vick from his backside. Could have been a fumble or worse. Sometimes a hold is a good thing.

…and not so much…

-I might as well say it because we are all talking about it anyway. That was not an illegal hit on Mikell and Coleman. Coleman is the one they say had the helmet-to-helmet, but Mikell was the one that laid the wood and sent Austin Collie to the turf. I get that the NFL is trying to protect players, but this call was wrong on so many levels and it nearly cost the Eagles the game. Collie caught the ball, took a few steps and protected himself from the hit. If a defender isn’t allowed to dislodge a ball that the player has in his possession, then let’s just go play golf.

Here is what really could have killed the Eagles. The Colts went down and scored on that drive, we know that. But the ruling on the field was an incomplete pass. The flag kills the Eagles because now you can’t review that play. Even if they reviewed it and determined it was a fumble with the Eagles recovering, the personal foul still means that it’s Colts ball. Total hose job. Notice the Eagles went into a funk for some time after that.

And did anyone notice what play the Colts ran immediately following that Collie play? Same thing.

-Did anyone else watch the rest of that game on pins and needles? Not because I was worried about the outcome, but because every time the Colts had the ball I thought the refs were going to flag the Eagles for playing football. Ridiculous.

-Another false start on Jason Peters! Hooray!

-Another terrible call on the running into the punter penalty. Luckily it didn’t do any damage.

-Seriously with all the field goals? You need more TD’s down there.

-Sav Rocca needs to do a better job. Good field position and Peyton Manning don’t go well together.

-I’ll give credit to Ernie Sims for getting a sack, but they might as well just blitz him all the time. He doesn’t seem to do anything else well.

-Michael Vick….get to the ground! Stop this nonsense. Heroics and bravery don’t mean anything on IR.

Okay, that’s enough for now. Great job getting a win against one of the best teams in the NFL.

C’mon Micah, where’s the love brother, are you sure you weren’t watching the Ginats game instead…

LT J Peters and LB Sims played their best games of the Season
The Def/Secondary as a unit were tight, backing each other up and making sure tackles all game long
The D/Line with Cole,Parker,Laws,Tapp and Graham were fresh and putting constant pressure in the 2nd Half and got stronger as the game went on
D-Jax was awesome and VIck got better and better as he warmed up and got used to the speed of the game after not playing for a while

The Not-So Good
The Injuries to S Nate Allen and RG MJG who I expect both to be out this week and hopefully ready for the following week. I don’t like the Eagles options at RG (N Cole seems way out of shape and cannot move laterally too well with his girth and his tweaked knee and R Wells I would hpe by now has learned the system well enough to play and conftribute..)
I do not like S bradley in COverage at all, let him blitz and keep a SIms/Fokou or bring in a quicker LB in Clayon or even Secondary help to run with the TE’s.. Bradley cannot get it done more than 10 ysars down field and will be a big issue when playing the Redskins,Bears,Vikings and COwboys who all your their TE’s in the seam a lot which is Bradley real weak spot..

James Mungro, hah! He was awesome when he was an Orangeman.

This game showed me that the could be very legit if they are able to maintain the intensity.

1) the team showed no quit in the second half, and they were able to overcome the adversity of some bad calls and sloppy play against a very good Colts team.

2) This was probably the first game where all three phases of the game played at a high level, Rocca’s shanked punt not withstanding.

3) Yes, the Eagles have the ability to move the football in the fourth quarter, and sustain drives. It just takes execution and a solid run/pass mix.

On the bad side:
1) we’re in trouble against any team with a solid D-Line if we don’t use the shotgun a little more. Big Blue has a very good D-Line…

2) Stewart Bradley could legitimately get called for pass interference on almost every play thrown at him. If you’re not gonna turn your head, just raise your arms when the receiver makes the move to get the ball – don’t go after the receiver. Bradley also played too close to the line on running downs, which is why sweeps were pretty effective for the Colts.

3) I think we should have worn the throwbacks again, knowing that the Colts wore theirs.

4) How many times can one team get into the Red Zone without trying a single Fade Route? I’m glad Celek is getting better at blocking, but if he has to stay in to help on the line, then we need to see Cooper get more play in the RZ.

I know there are a lot of Vick fans and some Vick doubters on this site. However, everyone has to agree that Vick has made a complete transformation as a human being. He sounds much more confident and well spoken up on the podium and not always talking about his own play but providing respect and praise to the players and opponents around him. Regardless of his past endeavors, which we can all agree he has paid his debt, the man has changed his ways and is seeking redemption. This is something you want to see in a franchise QB, the guy has changed and it is truly a better person. Great story unfolding before us… which brings up the questions, when do we lock him up for the next few years???

Paul Mancini

I agree with KTDawk,
It has been an unbelievable story on the transformation of Vick the person as well as Vick the QB..
I was never a big fan of his while down in Atlanta when he was younger, but he shows great posie, command and understanding of this Eagle Offense and his all around place in life at this time.
I also this this Eagle Offense, with it’s speed and weapons, is perfectly suited for VIck and his strengths and skills..The Eagles need to lock him up for the next 4-5 years and commit to him and send a strong message to the rest of the team and to the NFL, that they are ready to compete for a
Championship not only this Season, but for the next few Seasons.. I say there will be a deal in place and annouced Sat/Sun Dec 4/5th after playing their Thursday evening game on 12/2 versus the Texans..

Then Eagles can look to trade Kolb after the Season while his Trade Value is realtively high…
This is a deep QB draft this year for teams looking to rebuild at the position and putting a face on their franchises like the BIlls/Panthers/49ers/Cowboys/Redskins.
I think Kolb would draw interest from clubs who are already competing for a playoff spot and maybe need that QB position solidified for a playoff run like the Vikings,Cardinals,Seattle,Jacksonville, maybe even the Redksins again after McNabb leaves.
Kolb should be able to return a 3rd Rd and a 5th Rd pick at least ….

Your right Paul MAN! LOCK him in! ASAP! Theres alot of team’s in need of a QB, and Vick has proven to us that he is a QB not a Wild Cat guy like Josh Cribbs or Antwone Randle-el! A QB! The first year when Vick was playing Wild Cat for the Eagles was it me or you can just see the frustration in him!! Like he wanted to be the starter and he thought he was better than Mcnabb and Kolb? Or do you think that Andy Reid wanted more out of Vick……. maybe develope more into a Qb and not just a 8-10 play guy?

Well I was thinking Trade Kolb in the AFC maybe the Bills or Jags, or either Cincy? I dont know if Carson Palmer has it in him anymore! Keep Kolb out of the NFC…… I dont think the Browns because I think they like Colt McCoy and he can develop into a good Qb….

It would be nice dont get me wrong\\\\ But he was the guy early this season and lost his job due to Vick’s awesome performance in that 3 game stretch!! The birdz payed him 12 million, thats starter money….. I say get one of these good Qb’s out of the draft and make Kafka the guy a 2nd String???

Carson Palmer has really fallen off the last 2 seasons and is nowehere near the same QB he was
before that major knee injury he suffered a few years back versus the Steelers.. He exudes no confidence and no leadership and I always thought he was way overrated as a True #1 NFL QB.
As far as Vick last year in the Wildcat , It was obvious that Vick was not in top Football shape yet,
that he never really had his legs under him until late in the Season so I don’t think the Coaches felt confident in him to play the QB position and they had McNabb/Kolb in front of him. In hindsight, last season, though he didn’t contribute much on the Football Field, may have been his most important season/year for he learned what it takes to be a NFL player again, about the routines, practices, studying, the fine are of learning the offense and being a pocket QB and being a teammate. After spending 2 years in Prison, Vick was not definitely not physically and probably emtionally ready to be a #1 QB for any team until he got his legs under him and his head together
Sitting back last season on a pretty good team, with good coaches and watching, studying with both
McNabb & Kolb was probably a blessing in disguise for him Professionally and Personally..

well i dont like kolb but he can win games and proved to be a valuable back up
id love him to stay here as #2
is it wishful thinking ur porb right jroc but dont count it out
he’s only been with 1 team and 1 coach his entire career
he’s friends with the starter
and for the most part the team has some confidence in him to get the job done too
it’ll be a tough sell but its not impossible

PhillyWill, man fuck Kevin Kolb. Keep him the NFC for all I care. We know how he plays. Theres no need for us to have fear in playing against him. Remember, he has a baby arm and he is Mr.Checkdown. Now that we got Vick up and running again, bring’em all on. Shit, we just beat the best QB in the league. Bring’em all on! Brady, Roethlisberger, Rivers, who want it?! This win was something special. It symbolized a great team effort and the start of our road to the Super Bowl. We just gotta believe. And if you mothafuckas on here dont believe we can go to the SuperBowl, then you dont believe in our team…meaning, you are not a true fan.

But he came back this year looking excellent and people can say that he looked horrible in that preseason game (which he did) but that second team offensive line was horrible! 4-5 teams that will be looking to address their QB situation after the 2010 Season

#1) Cardinals – Have Weapons on the outside, but no one to get them the ball..McNabb a good fit
#2) Vikings – Farve will be done after this year, team is build to win now and will probably have a new Head Coach after Childress gets fired at the end of the season.
#3) Redskins – With McNabb leaving after the season as Free-Agent, who replacs him.I look for Shanahan to draft a young QB and try to mold them in his way and in his system
#4) Seahawks – With Hasselbeck getting older, is C Whitehurst #1 Starter material at QB ???
#5) Detroit Lions – QB Stafford’s 3rd Shoulder injury (Same Shoulder) is he durable enough, the team is slowly putting weapons together and can’t wait on him forever
#6) Bears — If Cutler/Martz bomb the rest of the season,, is the J Cutler Experiment over in Chicago..
They are better suited for running the ball, playing in cold weather which is the Bears image..Throwing the ball around 40-50 times a game with no real WR’s is not getting it done in Chicago
#7) Panthers – Matt Moore is done for the remainder of season and in last year of Contract, watch for Rookie QB’s J Claussen and Tony PIke (who I like) to compete and share time the remainder of season to compete on who palces themselves as the #1 QB for next season (my $$ is on Pike)
#8) Jacksonville — QB D Garrad has been up and down as this team and franchise have been for the last 4-5 years.. Is it time for a new face for the franchise…
#9) 49ers – After a horrible start, the teams talent at the skills position are there, a veteran QB could help this team over the hump..
#10) Bengals – Probably wholesale changes after this season is over, HC Leiws will probably get fired and who know what direction they will go with Coachiung staff, philosophy, etc, etc,

Teams who are not playoff tyeams right now but are probably happy with their QB situation
#1) Bills – Fitzpatrick has been lighting them up, young WR & RB, their Defense is horrible as is their O/Line but I think they are happy with Fitzpatrick and will ook to improve the many other areas of need
#2) Browns – I think they are happy with rookie QB C McCoy’s development so far..The big key is does C Mangini and his staff stay on after this year, if So, watch for McCoy to be the man, IF Holmgrem replacesd Manginig and wants a more passer friendly type of WCO , then they would probably be interested in adding another QB (maybe Kolb)
#3) Raiders – Have seemed to turn the corner as QB J Campbell appears to be the #1 QB
#4) SL Rams – Bradford having a very good Rookie Season and playing very effiicient on a ball control, rushing type of Offense.Their WR Corp is depleted but they have to be very happy with Bradford Progress and will look to add some skill players
#5) Cowboys – watch for young QB S McGhee over to see lots of action in the 2nd half of this lost Cowboy season over J Kinta and especially with new Coach Garrett who is coaching for his own future ..

Then there are teams with no real back-ups who need to start developing QB as their Star QB get
another year older (Giants,Colts,Saints,Bengals,Patriots)

I see Childress out of a job in the NFL for next year..
His handling of Farve,Moss & Harvin is not going to bode well for him for handling/coaching any NFL Teams or lockerooms.. I think he has real communication issues and don’t see a NFL team hiring him at this time.. Maybe a year away for him and mayve on a College level where he would have a little more authority over College Kids, but that’s about it… He’s a goofy guy and many observors have not been too impressed who he handles his players, staff, media and other parts of being a head coach in the NFL in today’s game…
To Dizzy J, I was commenting on teams in the NFL that either have QB issues now or will heading into the off-season to show what teams could be in the QB market for Kolb..

DIzzy…..Ok. You “take the best QB in the league” over Brady, Manning, Brees, Rodgers, Rivers, Bradford, Ryan, Flacco, Rothless, Ryan and perhaps even Schaub and healthy Stafford (though he seems to be a china cabinet). I’ll take any of those guys over Vick. And that isn’t ‘Vick hatin’ that’s just choosing the better QBs.

If any of those guys were offered for Vick in a trade….which would you turn down? I’d turn down Schaub and Stafford over injury concerns, but would without a doubt trade Vick for any of the others. You wouldn’t eh Dizzy? I can easily see Bellicheck doing a Brady/Vick deal str8 up couldn’t you. Of course he would. Vick is better right? I don’t understand why the call wasn’t made before the trade deadline. Its weird. How can Bellicheck not see that Vick is so much better. Dizzy, you better get on the blower and talk some sence into that silly, ignorant Bellicheck. And while you’re at it. Send a line to Peyton. He’s under some ridiculous assumption that he’d rather have Brees than Vick. Obtuse!

I often have issues with the Bird’s front office and Reid’s decisions, but frankly I’m glad you’re not running the team. Although press conferencesw would certainly be colourful.

But yes Dizzy, he’s playing better than McNabb…but just about the only guy playing worse than McNabb is Matt Moore, so it isn’t saying myuch.

As for the Colts. It was a good win. I’ve said that about 20x. I’m also saying that Vick had a nice average performance. Average. He made 3 really nice throws. A nice scramble. He didn’t have any turnovers but put 3 balls into Indy player’s hands, either through design or by himself seems to love the 7 step drop, scrambles before going through his progressions, and takes too much punishment,.

The love affair won’t last. Because it isn’t a true love, like the one I have for my Kevvy.

They said Obama wasn’t a socialist.
I heard about 20 of them say the Cowboys were going to be in the Superbowl.
They said the Jets were the best team in the AFC.
They said McNabb is a Hall of Fame QB.
And now they’re saying Vick is the “best QB in the league”

I didn’t believe any of those things when I first heard them, and I don’t believe them now.

But hey, I understand. Kool-aid tastes good, and goes especially well with the pabulmyou get fed and chow down on with abandon.

Dizzy, get some class man, you have none. Do you really need to bring that language on this site and disrespect everyone? Vick is not, nor ever will be better than Brady, Manning, Brees or Rivers.

Lets keep it 100% real here! We lose the game if we play any other QB other than Vick! The game would of been over at halftime! There were so many plays that Vick kept the drive going because of his mobility, this would not be the case if any other QB played! Drives would have stalled! More 3 and Outs! I guarantee we would of seen a turnover in some fashion! The deep bomb to Jackson was not only big because we got 3 points out of it…It was big for field position. We are on the 1 yard line and within seconds we have the ball around the Colts 40…plays like this go unnoticed. if we had to punt that deep in the end zone, field position changes and giving the Colts a short field is not something you want to do!

Also considering Peyton Manning threw two picks is he now one of the lesser QB’s in the game? or do you only look at Vick under a microscope?
