When Should The Eagles Resign Michael Vick?

When should the Eagles start talking to Michael Vick about a long-term contract?   Should they do it this week?  Should it be after the Giants game?  Or maybe during the long layoff after the Houston Texans game?

Whenever they decide to talk to Vick they must get it done before the season is over if they want to stop him from becoming a free agent.  We talked about the injury factor and it remains a major part of this decision.

Vick needs to stay healthy and prove that he will be wise about his decisions to avoid taking big hits.  Remember that Joe Banner is the guy that decides what to pay the guys on this football team, not Andy Reid or Howie Roseman.

Banner will talks it over with Reid and Roseman but ultimately he will make the call of how much money he’s willing to pay Vick.

Vick will ultimately decide whether he wants to stay here or not.  His contract with the Eagles ends at the finish of the season, so Banner, Reid and Roseman will have up until that time to make the decision.

They need to start finding out what ballpark they are in and what ballpark Vick is in right now.  This is the most important decision the Eagles will make this season and off season.

So I pose the question to all you guys, when should the Eagles sign Michael Vick.  For that matter should they resign Michael Vick or should they go with the younger Kevin Kolb.

I start trying to re-sign him after we beat the skins and the giants. 🙂

If it’s going to happen it will be sometime within the next 4 games. If Vick can beat the Skins AND the Giants back to back we will start to hear about nogotiations between both the Eagles and the Vick camp. If not I still wouldn’t rule out a tag of some kind after the season to at least get something for him versus letting him walk in FA.

We don’t need a signing controversy disrupting the upcoming division loaded games
Wait till the end of the season
We don’t need Vick with his mind on making decisions about signing while the season is still promising

In about 4 weeks after the Thursday Night Dec 2nd game versus the Texans..
If Eagles go 3-1 in this Span which is very doable (they would be 8-4 and in great shape to make the Playoffs) Since the Eagles play Thursaday, the players would be off that weekend and Eagles FO/VIck
can hammer out a deal over that weekend and make the announcement on Sunday Dec 5th which should keep Vick and the team fired up for their final 4 games as they continue on their Playoff/Super Bowl Run..
Now if Vick and Eagles don’t play well over the next 4 games or if he gets injured, then wait to after the Season, but I do believe that Vick’s Asking price will only rise as the season goes along and especially after the Season is over…

Yea I say by mid December lock him in….. Look we concentrate next year in the draft……. by picking up some stout offensive lineman the Birdz will be a dynasty for years to come……. That is the only thing that is not making the Birdz complete……. GO PHILLY………… I beleive Nick Cole’s days are done after this season, Reggie Wells as well and I dont know about Jamal Jackson if he’s going to recover from maybe a career ending injury?……. Depends on how he recovers……. Todd Heramanns (I know I spelled his name incorrectly) he has about a good few years left in him…… He’s still young but the nagging foot injury is a question…… Mike Mcglynn is a shocker to everyone this season…… He’s progressed week after week…………

After we come home from beating the Cowgirls. He gets 12-15 mill a year for 3-4 years? Kolb gets us a 3rd rounder..maybe 2nd ..i dunno. The injury concern is there but thats any q. He is a tough dude…and he’s 27 in football years..hes had one year of true offseason work outs.Too me the injury questions with him are outweighted by his pure skill, determination, leadership, and work-ethic.

yes we need a solid leader EROCK….. The guy has the determination to improve not only his self but the players around him….. The eagles FO has to see that and if we wait next season to finally give him a deal someone named Daniel Snyder will give him a deal out of this world and he’ll be close to home in D.C. which maybe a curse for Vick….. I say start talking to him now if they haven’t already and try to get a deal done. If not, is it possible to franchise him for next year? If anyone has some insight on that, REAL insight, not opinion, let me know.

As for jroc, stop listening to John Clayton. Shanahan is going to either a) trade for his QB or b) draft the QB he wants to mold.

Theres a ton of coaches who are up for grabs next season……. I think Shanahan is on the hotseat to tell you the truth!!!

BirdoBeamen

How is he on the hotseat? For benching a QB that deserved to be bench?

They went 4-12 last year. They ALREADY have as many wins this year as they did last year, halfway through the season.

The McNabb trade was a touch and go deal. If McNabb balled out of control, the Skins would have been contenders and Shanahan would have looked like a genius…….if he didn’t, well at least it would keep the fanbase happy for awhile.

Genius move if you ask me…..but point is, Skins are still a couple years away from being legitimate contenders.

To Birdo,
If there’s no CBA in place, who knows how “Franchising” will work next off-season…
The Eagles FO are not big on using the Franchising tag and I believe they have not used it once since
it’s been around..If they feel they cannot sign Vick, they will let him walk…

As for the Redskins Future QB situation, they will not sign McNabb who will be gone after this season (probably to the Arizona Cardinals) The Redskins I believe would be interested in discussing
Kolbs availability, who actually would fit Shanahan’s system pretty good, short to intermediate throws, utilize the TE,RB’s a lot, roll out pockets which are all strengths in Kolb’s game
Maybe another 2nd and 4th Rd Draft pick from the Redskins…

I would say by the end of this month would be a good time to get something done. If he makes it through to December without injury and say we win our next 3 games, you have to get it done before the playoffs. No question about it. Or else another team will offer him much more money and you’ll lose him.

The longer the Eagles wait, the more Vick will cost.

Banner knows this for sure.

If Vick goes on a tear and hi name continues in the MVP conversation, there’s a good chance the Eagles would have to tag him and pay franchise money while trying to hammer out a deal and believe me….. There’s teams out there licking their Chops at the opportunity of getting a big gate draw by signing A new improved Michael Vick without getting the PR hit the Eagles already took signing him.

With all this said, the Eagles will sign Vick before he goes on a tear to get value while they still have the high ground. This Monday night game before the world in Primetime is Vick showcase himself as a top passer and get a TD with his legs on national television while beating a dejected Skins team…that will be all Lurie would need to see. That’s the perfect medium to get it done to satisfy both sides. I believe they are already talking anytime Dave Spuds asks Jaws what he think would be out there for kolb if Eagles stick with Vick. The conversations amongst the brass and the players have begun. You think the players on this team want to go forward with Kolb over Vick? You think this defense want to play against Vick twice a year with Snyder and his open wallet ready to pounce?

A deal will be struck by next Thursday.

They won’t resign him during the season and lose leverage on a Kolb trade. They will wait until after the season where they will tag him, then trade Kolb using the leverage that they may trade Vick and go with Kolb. Then they will resign Vick. Vick will know this as well so he will play along with the whole charade.

I don’t think Vick will leave Philly. He seems to love it here…..his wife is FROM here……this is the team that gave him his chance at redemption……I get the sense that Vick wants to pay the Eagles organization back by trying to win a Superbowl. Not just this year, but for years to come.

Now I’m not foolish to believe that money doesn’t talk…..but if the Eagles come at him with something like 5 yrs/65-70 mil with 20 mil up front, he’ll be more than content.

@BirdoBeamen….. I understand where your coming from…… But the FO and players for Denver have lost respect for Shanahan….. I see the chain happening here in Washington as well…. The whole thing with Haynesworth on how he handled the situation which was a big circus show in the offseason….. 2nd of all they are ranked in the bottom category on pass defense and as a offensive unit they haven’t improved from last year…… They still lose against teams they should expect to beat teams like the Lions, and Rams…… I just think that he should be very careful from here on out…. Thats all i’m saying…….

That’s Right Birdo,
That is probably the reason why they will never Franchise Again…
I think theEagles want to see how Vick plays in these 2-3 Weeks and plays like he has, they lock him up for the next 4-5 years.. A stickler on any Contract deal will be language and protection that a team would want to have in there about if Mike get’s in any off-the field trouble and is suspended or even booted from the NFL by God (also known as Roger Goodell). How is a team going to propose a deal about protecting their investment and upfront, guaranteed big bonus $$$$. Signing him may not be as easy as everyone thinks.. A team is going to want to protect their investment…

Jonathan..The Eagles will not lose value on Kolb by signing Vick……Skins, Panthers, Carinals,Vikings, Browns, Bills, and I’m even going to thrown in the Cowboys after Romo led them to a 1-5 record…..these teams will need quarterbacks.

And teams would rather pay for a young proven commodity who is well coached instead of the crazy money for a first round QB they may bust and cost the team money and time. Matt Cassel, Matt Shaub…..these players comes into mind. There’s a market for Kolb and if the teams don’t shell out the pick we want the Eagles will just keep Kolb another year….Kolb’s deal was front loaded so he’ll only cost around 2 million next season. So, they come with the pick or player we want at our price…hell..we don’t need a 1st round pick for Kolb anyway. a couple of 3rd’s or a 2nd will do and think that will happen.

BirdoBeamen

I understand that they don’t want to lose leverage on Kolb, but I don’t think that is a big a factor and many would think. Whether you resign Vick doesn’t make Kolb less valuable. It might make some teams low ball you because they figure you have to get rid of him. But we know the Eagles are stubborn and if they don’t get what they want they’ll keep and may try to trade him during the entire offseason. For example, the Eagle will want a 2nd round pick for him whether they sign Vick now or whether they sign him later. But let’s look at the other side of this as well. Signing Vick during the season could increase the number of bids you get for Kolb now because teams now know you really WANT to get rid of him but not HAVE to . So now you have bidding wars for Kolb which could drive up the cost. Teams like San Fran, Wash, Seattle, and Arizona would gladly kick out a 2 for a QB and keep their 1 for something else. So you could actually create a bidding war for Kolb by signing Vick. I think that is a very possible scenario.

And just to set the record straight, I love Vick….I always have……but I also have full confidence in Kolb as well. If we lose Vick, it will be a downer, but it’s not like I’ll denounce my fandom……Kolb can still lead us to a championship just like Vick can….the only difference is that Vick can do it with a little more excitement.

Birdo…sorry but there’s nothin Kolb have shown that says he can lead us to a championship. All variables must be in place for Kolb to be uccessful and I don’t think we have the time for every position on the team to be solid to allow Kolb to be a stand up QB and lead this team to the Superbowl. That’s the dynamics. Kolb would be a successfull QB on a team that surrounds it’s team around the running game and clock control, with a top 5 defense….and a monster Oline. The reality is that if you put any QB in that situation they’ll be successful. He’s a system guy but have never shown the skills to lead a team from behind or that swagger that comes with the position. Kolb is really just another guy who is well coached. He’ll succeed put in the right situation. A championship?

I just don’t know…….He’s still an interception waiting to happen and teams with real good pass rushes rattle him every time. Championship QB’s over come good defenses. He’s 26 and if he had a cannon as an arm to make up for his deficencies then you might have an argument.

SONGS, once again, you have shown you are an idiot.

Can Kolb play? Of course, he has shown it. In order to learn, you have to play. Kolb has gotten that opportunity sporadically.

Did he lose his job that was never really his in the first place? Yes.

Who did he lose it to? A former number one draft pick who at one point was the highest paid player in football. SHOCKING!

Point is, we had a top five defense, and a monster o line, with the best QB in Eagles history — and still didn’t get a ring — so your basis on that argument is thrown out the window right there.

Drew Brees doesn’t have a “cannon as an arm” and he has a ring. I wouldn’t consider Eli Manning as having a cannon either. Daunte Culppepper had a cannon, look where it got him. McNabb has a cannon, look where it got him. Kolb torched the best team in the NFL (record wise) just a couple weeks ago. That’s with limited experience.

We’re in a GREAT situation when it comes to the QB position — I’ll be satisified whichever way it goes.

I like to see the Eagles go ahead and lock Schmitt in for 2-3 years for it’s not a given that Weaver will be ever be 100% back from his severe Knee Injury. I actually like Schmitt better as a blocker and as a receiver plus he plays special teams.. He’s been a great fit so far as has Return man/CB J Calvin..
I would lock in McGlynn,MJG,Sims,Dixon,Dunlap,Howard,Calvin,Schmitt,D Patterson right now for the next 2-3 seasons
After this season, I would release J Jackson, N Cole, R Wells, O Gaither, E Hobbs, J Parker,
trade Mike Patterson for a 4th or 5th Rd Draft pick,
In 2011 Draft, I would go OL,CB,TE,LB,S and RB positions by priority

ChrisS

November 12, 2010 11:19 am

Don’t get me wrong I was hoping at the beginning of the season Kolb would be a monster and just destroy other teams but when he went down and Vick came in he opened my eyes real wide. He adds that dynamic factor that we had when McNabb was young and could run around, make people miss and through the ball down field 70yds at a time. I feel that Vick is better now as an eagle then what he was when he was with the falcons. We have way better receivers then what Atlanta had. Vick could only rely on Alge or his legs to win games for Atlanta.
