Report: Redskins sign McNabb to five-year extension

You read that correctly. Just a couple weeks after head coach Mike Shanahan decided to bench Donovan McNabb in the final minutes of a loss to the Detroit Lions, the Washington Redskins have decided that he’s worth keeping around another five years at a hefty price tag.

According to ESPN‘s Michael Smith, the Redskins have signed McNabb to a five-year extension worth $78 million, with $40 million of that guaranteed.

Stunning.

So what changed? What is different now? The lack of a singular explanation for his benching made things extremely fishy. Did Shanahan just wake up and look at his roster? Did he realize that McNabb is surrounded by nothing?

The truth is, Donovan hasn’t played his best football this season. But, he hardly has any help. The offensive line is a disgrace. His wide receivers other than Santana Moss include Joey Galloway, Roydell Williams and Anthony Armstrong. Shanahan’s attempt to bolster the running game this season involved Willie Parker and Larry Johnson.

And the defense? The defense is horrific. The past few years, the Redskins have had some nice defenses that operated out of the 4-3. Well, forget all that. We aren’t going to press and we’re going to a 3-4. Brilliant.

How is this team even 4-4? They won four games all of last year? Someone must have realized that Donovan isn’t the problem.

I wonder how long it takes them to realize that Shanahan is the one that should be looked at more closely. He’s looked at as a football god, but he hasn’t done anything in the league since John Elway retired. And he’s made a lot of moves this season that can only be called questionable.

Oh, the Redskins. What won’t they do next?

Best news I hears all day he stays in the division, although Grossman is a train wreck.

It’s smart on Donovan’s part to take $40M today with the new CBA being hashed out. I guess the money is worth it and he has January off now that he plays in DC.

There is more to this McNabb’s current ability, or lack therof, Shanahan, even what Snyder wants. This is a move by the WWF, headed by Roger, I mean the NFL.
