Eagles Blowout Redskins On Record-Setting Night

If there ever was a record-setting blowout, this was one of them. DeSean Jackson and LaRon Landry got into a scuffle before game.  I don’t know what was said but Landry and his Washington teammates paid for it dearly all night.

The Eagles set a record on the first play of the game.  They set a record at the end of the first quarter,  Michael Vick broke records all night long.  The offense was unstoppable and the defense scored just about as much as the Skins offense.

From the very first play, the Eagles displayed their speed and made a statement.  I was wondering if Vick could continue to play at such a high level.  He answered that question immediately.

The bomb showed how much Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg wanted to make up for the loss in the first game.  I got the notion this past week that Reid and Mornhinweg felt they let their football team down in the first game because they didn’t adjust quick enough to the cover-2 zone the Redskins played in the first game.

All of the Eagles players felt they let one get away that they should have won.  They wanted no part of that in this one, so they put their foot on the gas on the very first play.

Jackson came off the line of scrimmage and lulled speedy Redskins safety Landry to sleep.  He was jogging but once Michael Vick let go of the ball, Jackson left Landry and went and got it.

I don’t think Landry thought Vick could throw the ball that far because he was letting the ball go from the five-yard line.  It was a perfect spiral as usual with Vick passes.  It was a 88-yard completion for a touchdown, which was a longest first play in Eagles history.

Later on, Vick put the ball into the end zone with a scramble to his right.  This was after completing a few passes.  He completed his first nine passes before an incompletion.  He made Redskins defensive lineman Lorenzo Alexander look like they a high school player.  The speedy quarterback went through the Washington defenders like they were standing still as he took the ball into the end zone to make the score 14-0.

The third touchdown was on a throwback play.  Vick and running back LeSean McCoy ran a play that Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook used to score quite a few touchdowns through the years.  It was a shuffle pass to McCoy.  The quarterback seemed to hold the ball longer than necessary but he pitched it to McCoy at the last second and the running back was escorted into the end zone.

On the fourth score, new Eagles running Jerome Harrison took a handoff on a quick hitter up the middle.  Harrison got through the hole quickly and exploded into the secondary.  He made a move on Skins cornerback Dante Hall and nearly broke his ankle with the fake.

I thought McCoy was the only running back on the team, who was capable of that type of cut.  He made another Redskin miss and acellerated down the right sideline.  Harrision took the ball all the way down inside the five yard line and dove for the end zone.

On a night when Vick was exploding for big plays, Harrison came out of no where to run for 109 yards on only 11 carries.

The 28-0 score at the end of the first quarter was the largest lead a visiting ever had over a home team in the history of the NFL.

Vick continued the assault with a bomb to wide Jeremy Maclin who made a great diving catch for a score.  The quarterback put the ball up to Maclin and give him a chance to make a play.  The second-year wide receiver did a great job of screening off Hall and giving himself a chance to make the play.

Before the end of the first half, Vick ran for yet another touchdown and this one looked so easy, it was hard to believe they were playing tackle football.  Vick eluded the Redskins tacklers and waltzed into the end zone untouched from six yards out.

David Akers kicked a field goal before the half to give the Birds 45 points before halftime.  Nobody could have imagined that this would be a blowout of this magnitude at halftime.

The Birds scored again in the second half with Vick scanning the field for eight seconds before connecting with wide receiver Jason Avant for a touchdown.

Cornerback Dimitri Patterson put an exclamation point on the win by picking off a Donovan McNabb pass and running it in for a touchdown from 40 yards out.  It was Patterson’s second interception of the game and it was the third time, the Birds picked of McNabb in the game.

The team scored the most points ever scored on Monday Night Football, 59, and it was the most yardage, 592, ever gained by an Eagles football team.  It was a complete and thorough beat down of the Skins.

Birds certainly look like contender now, but this has to be tempered based on who they were playing. I’ve been an anti-McNabb guy, but you have to feel sorry for the guy to some extent – but then again with $40M (or $10M???) guaranteed, probably not too much.

Mr. Cobb, great point about McNabb looking over at the team that could be his. (wip610). I always felt McNabb was upset he asked for weapons, finally got them and was traded. Anybody would be.

The offensive lineman that lets Vick get blindsided again should not get paid that week and have to run nude down broad street. And watch Russel Crowe’s Robinhood.

In all the Vicksitement we have to give props to the GM again. We dumped a bum of a RB in Bell and #33 looked like Jim Brown/Walter Payton in his prime. Wow! cutbacks burst power loved it!

Demetri Patterson! Wow awesome CB tandem. Pay that man. What a game!!!!

I said we should run from the I and use that fullback. Awesome. Another great pick up (FB). This is the best GM we have ever had. So many bums have gone threw these doors. What a pleasure to see this. I always told my sons I was going to die the day before the Eagles finally won the SuperBowl. I’m begging the Lord to keep me alive for this run, and the full 120. Gen 6:3.

Make it a great day!

Nice recap, G!

It was a record-breaking, blitzkrieg of a night. This one ranks right up there with the “House of Pain” game, except it was the offense that played extraordinary football.

With such an incredible offensive display, it’s hard to be critical. But I’ve got to call it as I see it. In my opinion, after Reid’s 15 scripted plays, the play-calling became both predictable and dangerous.
As he did in both the Tennessee and Indianapolis games, Reid called too many successive passes. Unlike those games, however, Reid didn’t call straight-drop passes. He rolled Vick out for the most of the night. Still, the successive passes allowed Washington’s defense to pin its ears back and go after Vick. The pressure began to mount. However, unlike most QBs, pressuring Vick doesn’t necessarily work to the defense’s advantage.

During the 3rd quarter, Vick took off on several scampers for long gains. After giving an all-out effort, Washington’s defensive line grew tired and frustrated, as Vick ran past them eating up huge chunks of yardage.

Eventually Washington’s defense was rendered feeble. In fact, by the 4th quarter, Vick had single-handedly reduced Washington to a 3-man rush, with a spy. And like any NFL quarterback, Vick carved up the secondary until it took on the appearance of a Thanksgiving turkey carcass.

My only concern is that Vick will eventually be injured as he is forced to take off on jaunts through the land of giants. After last night’s showing, however, I’m starting to believe that Vick is the one QB who can not only survive, but thrive in no-man’s land. Only time will tell.

Again, I’ve got to give Reid kudos for rolling Vick out. That move really helped Vick to see the field and allowed him more time to operate.

One thing I think if kinda half funny half effed up…on the Harrison run, once he broke it out to the sidline he had to beat 3 Skins to the endzone and he had 1 blocker…DJAX!?!?!?!

Birdobeamen :

I hear you. It’s hard to calm down when watched Roman Gabriel, Silky Sullivan and every other Eagle figure out a way to lose a game.

Did you see Vick get in the Grill of that kick returner who fumbled?

He wanted a massive blowout and was not about to let some bum give the game away.

At last a leader. I was always a fan of McGiggles, but this is what I’m talking about.

Don’ t ask politely, Take the damn Game. That’s what Vick did.
