Tough Win Over Giants Shows Us The Competitiveness Of Young Eagles

The Eagles tough win over the Giants said much more about this young Birds team than last week’s blowout of the Redskins.  In the Monday game, we saw the Birds talent, this week we saw their hearts and intestinal fortitude.

It wasn’t a pretty game and they were unable to spring the big pass plays deep in the way they had against Washington.  They got off to a slow start before finding a way to attack the Giants tough defense.

Andy Reid knew the Birds were going to have some ups and downs and was proud of the way his football team fought.

“It’s an important game”, Reid said. “They’re all important, but this part of it, we needed to do. The guys buckled down and they all trusted each other. You saw the offense cheering for the defense, and the defense cheering for the offense. They weren’t hanging their heads. They kept battling, and I’m proud of them for that.”

Veteran quarterback Michael Vick knew this football team wasn’t going to score 28 points in each first quarter and blow their opponents out by over 30 points.

“We knew this game wasn’t going to be like last game. We knew there was going to be adversity that we were going to have to deal with,” Vick said. “It’s all about fighting, winning the tough ones, and pulling it out when you need to.”
“That’s the reason why I put that game behind me when it was over – because I knew expectations were going to be through the roof and I knew people were going to expect us to score 50 points a game, but it’s not going to work that way, especially against a good defense like the Giants have.”

The fact that they battled back from a 4th quarter deficit against the best defense in the National Football League says something for this football team. They hung together and rose to the occasion.

“It says that we are for real and that is how we want to be taken”, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said in the locker room. “We know we have a lot of work to do, but I think we are heading in the right direction.”

His fellow wide receiver, DeSean Jackson concurred with him.

“It shows us a lot about ourselves”, Jackson told a group of reporters. “We feel like we are one of the best teams in the conference and we played like it. It’s not going to always be as pretty as we want it to be and we realize that. The bottom line is we need to find a way to get it done and we did that.”

Need to tighten up th ePenalties (Herremans 2 were costly), catch the ball (Avan’ts drop)
and score TD”s in the Red-Zone and the game would have been a blowout in th e1st half..
Can’t alllow teams hang around for when you do, you allow them a chance to win (example Titans)

We won by ten and still left at least 2 TDs laying on the field…We shoulda had close to 40 points last night..I’ll take the win but man, how the hell does Avant drop that one TD pass?

Yeah we looked like PSU last night with not getting those TDs. We still got the W though. I have a felling that that’s the last touchdown ball Avant drops all season. I still think Vick had a solid outing, and the running game was there when we needed it the most. Giants should have had at least one less touchdown but we can thank Mikell for not being able to cover any one last night. So all in all that was a solid win and now we need to look ahead to the bears and hope that we can carve up there D.

I’m with you jimmy mac; could have easily been a blowout. But it was a hard fought win so I can’t complain.

Stellar effort last night. Certainly not pretty, and obviouly some mistakes in the execution, but the effort put out was strong. Faced a litle adversity (that they brought on themselves) and found a way to win. The Giants are a little better than I expected them to be, but I think the Birds will clock them in NJ. They will not be able to stop the Eagles O twice.

Total team victory! The defense is looking real good as of late. I can only recall one nice run by the Giants, Bradshaw, other than that Eagles man handled the Giants run game..147 yards passing by the Giants, the Giants being the 2nd highest ranked team in the NFL in offense…Lovely performance by the Eagles D. Offensively Eagles left some points on the field yesterday and the penalties definitely worked in the Giants favor…

It’s hard to believe, but the Eagles are 3rd in the NFL in rush yards per game.

Paulman, can any part of you just enjoy a win for once?

I gotta agree with Paulman on this one, the penalties were ATROCIOUS last night. And a big reason why the Giants hung around.

Yes I enjoyed the Victory, Schiller,
But I like to raise the bar and expect the team to execute better (especially on Offense) where they
looked a little out of kilter last evening and hurt themsevles with missed throws, dropped passes and penalties.. You cannot beat the top teams like this, the Giants are a good team, but with their injuries
(missing 4-5 Starters on Offense) they were not the real threat to score a lot of points than they will be next time when they meet which is why a quick start to jump on them was critical..It worked out in the end, but the Eales were fortunate that the Giants were off-sides which allowed them another chance at a 3rd & 1 instead of probably punting the ball, and also the fumble by Manning was a big-time break which sealed the game, but you can’t count of this happening very often

See Paulman, here is where I disagree. You want the Eagles to play v. the Giants on November 21st, at the level it will take to beat the AFC champion in the superbowl. Well sure, that would be great. But the task yesterday (and on any given day) is to beat the team your playing. If you are concerned about playing well enough to beat the best team in the league (OR ANYTHING AT ALL EXCEPT FOR THE TEAM IN FRONT OF YOU), you’re being a real honest dumbass (not you but the players and coaches in a theoretical situation where they’d be worrying about anything but the team they’re currently playing).

We all sit at our computers and have the luxury of hypotheticals and aiming for the heavens, but reality on the football field last night was about the Eagles v. the Giants. NOT “the top teams”. Like who? the Falcons? We beat them. The Colts? we beat them. The Giants? We beat them. We can only play the teams on our schedule and we do not need to be able to beat the packers or the Giants again or the Steelers or the CHEATriots until we face them.

Forget about judging the team against what your conception of what it will take to beat the top teams is. Judge them against their opponent because that’s all they are concerned with.

I’m with you schiller on this one. I do understand what Paulman is talking about but at the same time, I don’t want them to play flawless football right now. I want them to win but if you play flawless midway through the season, there’s a good chance you’ll cool down by playoff time. This was the type of game to build character for the young guys and for them to understand they still have to improve. And I also look at it like this, with all the penalties and the 2 dropped TDs, blocked field and you still beat the Giants by 10. That just shows me that we are heads and shoulders above them but let’s the young guys know you still have to fully concentrate. So I’m with schiller on this one because I’ll take this as a character builder game that will help late in the season/playoffs and gives them more drive to keep getting better. Can’t be perfect at this point in the season.

I really don’t care who the Eagles are Playing Schiller,
When I see 4 drives go into the Red-Zone in the 1st half, I expect the Eagles to score more than 13 points..
Since they didn’t, then I will be critical about the play calling, execution, bad reads, drop passes, penalties, etc, etc that caused them to miss putting their opponenet away in the 1st half.
A really good team doesn’t do this and the Eagles after dominating thru the first 2 & 1/2 Quarters of play were only up 16-3 which isn’t good enough for me…
I really didn’t want to see a Tennesse Titan type of comeback happen again did you…

The problem with Paulman’s thinking is that it applies to EVERY team in the league RIGHT NOW. Each team does something each game where someone can say “you can’t play like that against the top teams in the league”. Well that really doesn’t matter until you actually play them. We can’t assume that what happens against the Giants happens against the Saints, Packers or any other team. So sure, we want Avant and jackson to make those catches and Mikell not to get that pass interference call but these things are not a given to happen against another team. No team is flawless and some games are going to be ugly. I’d rather them have this kind of learning experience then having to learn after a loss.

Paul, your criticisms are valid but you cannot expect them to be perfect at this point in the season. Also playing a division rival who is also a good team for 1st place. We left some plays on the field but the encouraging part of that is the fact that even with the things we did wrong that would normally kill a team against a team like the Giants, we still won. So I see where you are coming from and I agree but at the same time for a team this young and a defense getting better, many will choose to pull out the positives. Every game will not play out like it did against the Redskins. There will always be criticisms to be made in every game. The dropped TDs frustrated me as well and the penalties. But I have to also look at how they persevered even after those things.
