My Thoughts Eagles/Bears

It’s easy to overreact to a game like this, but the Eagles were due for a rough one. All week, all we heard about was how fabulous the Eagles were and how the Bears were dogs that didn’t deserve their 7-3 record. But, Chicago tends to give the Birds a tough time and that’s exactly what happened on Sunday.

Let’s look at the game:

What I liked…

-Antonio Dixon is better than Brodrick Bunkley, but I think we knew that already. He does the things that I’ve been waiting to see from Bunkley for a while. Namely, he gets up field. Penetration from the defensive tackles is key to having a great defense. Dixon looks very good.

-Three penalties for 19 yards? That’s more like it.

-Jason Avant is tremendous going and getting balls that should have sailed right over his head.

-It is fun to watch Devin Hester run. Excellent speed, very minor yet extremely effective cutting. Unreal vision. He’s something else.

-Can you tell I’m struggling to come up with things I liked from the game? Let’s give another shout out to David Akers?

…and not so much…

-Now comes the speculation that Vick is reverting back to the 2004 version. He was missing open receivers, holding the ball way too long and making some questionable decisions. We all know I’m not a Vick fan, but let’s relax a little here. I think there are a variety of reasons he’s cooled off and I don’t know that it has anything to do with becoming the “old Vick.”

I heard one theory that he just hasn’t played this much football week in and week out for quite a while. And that’s true, maybe he’s a little tired. He looked a little slower in Chicago on Sunday, but that also could have to do with that mess of a field. Still, it does happen that professional athletes can get worn out. Especially when you play the game on 11 like Vick does.

It’s also possible/likely that he was just playing at an insane level previously and no one could/should be asked to maintain that white hot level for an entire season.

What seems most plausible to me, however, is that Vick has run into some great defenses the past couple weeks. The Giants had a spectacular game plan and this is a copy cat league. Both teams brought heat and sent Vick to his right. I’m not saying the whole NFL has caught up to Vick, but defensive coordinators aren’t stupid. They’ll figure something out. It’s up to Andy and Marty now to counteract what they are doing.

-This offensive line is just not very good. But, Andy was able to hide that for a while using Vick’s speed, max protection and wide receiver misdirections and reverses. Where were all the reverses?

-It’s tough to get upset with Vick for throwing one of the most perfect balls to Celek I’ve ever seen. But, please, let’s not make a habit of that. Very dangerous. Still not sure how that got in there. Then again, it was fourth down at the end of a game they were losing. If it’s in that scenario, I guess I can live with it. Just don’t try that stuff in the middle of a tight game.

-I don’t know that I can complain about Asante Samuel ever again. Yes, he does things that annoy all of us. But if this is what the secondary becomes when he’s gone? Jeez. Anyone else notice what side all of Cutler’s TD passes went to?

-No more Joselio Hanson on the outside. I’m begging you.

-While I’m piling on the secondary, I’ve never been a huge fan of Quintin Mikell, but his play seems to have really fallen off. He got run over on one of the big plays to the left and was burned for a touchdown. Can we all remember for a second that the Bears have a lousy, lousy set of WR’s? One guy is a converted cornerback for god’s sake!

-At some point, I have to believe that special teams just doesn’t have the personnel to get it done. They were absolutely terrible covering kicks yesterday. Cutler looks that much better when he only has to go 20 yards before he’s in FG range. Just terrible.

-What happened to Stewart Bradley this year?

-The entire defense was bad Sunday, not sure what else to say. One drive was some 17 plays and took 10 minutes off the clock in the second half? Add to that numerous big plays? Terrible play in the red zone (I saw a stat that the Eagles give up TD’s 76% of the time in the red zone. And that was heading into the game. That’s good for worst in the NFL)? No turnovers? How many different ways can a defense stink?

-Should I mention DeSean’s alligator arms? I understand why he’s doing it so it’s tough to be too angry. It’s easy to sit on the couch and call him out for being soft on those plays. But, this is his livelihood. His second contract is most likely the difference between being set for life or taking real estate classes. Rookie contracts for a second-round pick won’t put you on Easy Street for good. If you disagree, watch him play. DeSean is clearly aware of this.

That’s it for now. The bottom line is that this team is better than people are giving them credit for. Yes, they had a bad game against a 7-3 (now 8-3) team on the road. It happens. They were dreadful for most of the afternoon and were still somewhat in the game until the end. You can’t be a bad team and pull that off. Still, it’s time to get back to work. Too bad that Andre Johnson’s little Manny Pacquiao incident yesterday won’t leave the Texans without the best wide receiver in football. Yep, no suspension.

If the Eagels can’t force 1 to 2 Turnovers on their opponents, then they are in trouble since they are not physical enough to really stop anyone and when forced to blitz and come in with the kitchen sink blitz, Good experienced QB’s/Coordinators will carve them up with Screens, Bubble routes, quick slants..
It’s like the final 2 games last year versus the Cowboys all over again..
With this being said, the Eagle O was in high gear and scoring TD’s… Since the 2nd Quarter of the
Redskins game, they are now like 4 for 20 in Red Zone TD’s efficiency. If the Eagles continue to settle for FG’s, they will lose most of these close games for the Defense does not appear to be able to stop anyone

They’re not physical enough too stop anyone huh P.M.? Like the Giants huh? Sorry Paul..shut up.

Those are the top defenses in the league. And for one of those games our team had a defense that looked just as good. And we were without the ballhawk yesterday.

I’m over this game. NFC is still up for grabs. The Packers almost beat the Falcs at home and they have noone running the ball. Noone.

@Micah, The only thing worth absorbing while reading this article was the 76% red zone stat on defense. Other than that I wasted 3 mins of my time…all of us philly faithful have already made mention of every single point you’ve talked about in this post…sorry but that is REALTALK!

I dont think Vick has cooled off or if its the receivers not catching the ball? maybe a little bit of both, if defense plays well and we win the game, the only negative you could take from the game would be Vick’s interception, other than that he played well…If the two dropped TD’s passes against the Giants were caught, would we be saying Vick has cooled off…yes Vick missed a receiver, he still completed 66% of his passes…threw for 2 TDs and 333 yards…Vick’s pick was big, so was the defensive play but One thing I will say about Vick is this, he needs to take better care of the ball, those fumbles were not costly, but could have easily turned the game into a route the wrong way….

Special teams has been a problem on and off all season…We hurt our self on special teams more than we help ourselves! …

last week the Eagles defense was looking good in Paulman’s eyes…now this week they cant stop anyone…just ridicolous! Asante is a key part of that defense, we need him back and healthy asap…

Paul man …you’re a fraud who want Kolb.

First off loser….If the Eagles catch those passes in the end zone, we’re not talking about the deficencies.

They win the game against the Giants easily and they beat the Chicago Bears, so please Paul man ….can it!

Once we blow another squad out, you’ll be back on the wagon.

We know there’s holes but if our recievers catch the ball the holes are covered and it’s a different ball game.

and Songs you’re an apologist who can’t see that Vick is going to have problems going forward. These are the kinds of games you’re going to see more coming up. Get used to it. And enough with the “if” business. “If” Eli Manning hadn’t decided to play give away with 5 turnovers, would the Birds have beaten the Giants? Who knows.

What I do know is that its you who want/need another blowout and you should get one with the pathetic Houston D coming to town with one practice to prepare. Then all will be good again the the Vick apologist fantasy world that you live in.

Vinnie…I’ll take a 333 yard passing with 2 touchdowns and an interception all day long if our defense is up to snuff and our special teams don’t give the other team half a field every opportunity.

I’ll never apologize for a player that can still produce even when the rest of the team suck.

What is there to apologize for?

To Erock,
Like te Giants are a physical team with half their O/L and WR’s Out.. C’mon and snap out of it, The Giants are a passing team anymore and mnot the team like years past. In fact, if Eli dones’t fumble on that slide/dive, the Eagle could have very well lost that game against a team with 5 starters out on Offense…
To Songs,
The only Stat I can about is the W, I would rather the QB throw for 180 yards and no Int as long as it’s a win..Vick 330 yard performance meant nothing in a losing effort and most of his yards came after being down by 18 points

November 30, 2010 12:41 am

Again, paulman you elude the point.

We know that W’s is all that counts but the point is Vick did not have a bad game and he’s not the reason we lost.

We lost because of a horrible secondary, offensive line, and a middle linebacker who can’t tackle water.

If Vick is not in this game, we’re not even in a position to make a run in the game.

2nd, when Kolb was stinking up the joint, people out there would blame every position on the team including coaches to mask him…yet Vick is really the reason this team is in position to do anything gets criticised by those who would want to blame him…even in a valient effort.

If this was Indianaolis, or New England and the QB’s threw for 333 yards and 2 TD’S and an 1 interception for the first mistake all year…..Do you think the fans in media in those cities would be blaming Manning and Brady?

What’s really going on Paulman?

If Kolb would have had the same numbers would anyone be talking about one tipped ball right now?

Get off the wagon and stay off!!!!!

Get use to Vick and your boy Kolb in the background looking at the clipboard.

you guys are idiots if somebody says Vick is cooling off! Sans the interception in the red zone, the offense moved pretty much every time they had the football! If D Jax does not alligator arm that damn sure TD, and drop another one, we have much more points and probably win! I was not pretty, but Vick was effective hence his once again OVER 92 PASSER RATING! Not just statistically, if you watch the game, you can see the damn 9-11 minute drive in the second half the Bears had to eat the clock and keep Vick off the field. Once he got the ball, the team moved again, no problem, but we had to settle for feild goals because Desean dropped the Td. Celek caught one, but by that time that bears time killing drive did us in. It should not take 35 point to beat the Chicago Bears PERIOD!

Good points Songs. Hey Paul I got my eye on you brother, we checking ID’s at the Eagle Nation front door.
Reid can devastate those deep safeties, and those up close LB’s with a consistant and effective dose of McCoy, Harrison, and Schmidt runnnig and catching sreens, with a few of Vick taking off. We wear those bastards down early getting gasping for air then we deep punch their lights out.

Even if the run is not working that would be enough to scare them to change, yeah teams respect McCoy we need to play on that.

To be fair I think that Reid does that when he has a feel that the defense can cover a few 3 and outs until the run gets going. It didn’t happen with the bears so he couldnot afford the risky game plan. The defense is the key to the exploits of our offense, when we have confidence in our defense we do all kind of wild stuff to desimate the will of the opposing defense.

So let us hope the defense is ready for Thursday.

As always LONG LIVE THE EAGLES

@Paulman

I wish I could tell you to shut the hell up without actually saying it….oops guess I just did! my fault! you say you only care about the W, but you tried to point out the holes in Vick’s game against the Giants last week…If I recall, the Eagles won that game…Bears game, again the score was 28 – 13 with 13 minutes left to play in 3rd quarter….Bears ran 10 minutes off the clock in the 3rd resulting in a field goal now the score was 31 – 13…should the Eagles have just given up? is that what you propose? The eagles had the ball one time in the 3rd quarter, that is it…I guess Vick plays defense now…It was a team loss, I see it…most philly faithful see it…only Vick haters are blaming the QB for the loss…

Ummm Phillywill. Houston has the worst D in the league. They just wiped out a team now in disarray led by some guy named Rusty. So shut that. Don’t even begin to make an arguement that they’re somehow good on D.

Against GB I was saying “Damn, he’s gotta learn from this, but its only his 3rd ever start”

Ya Kolb only put up 9 vs Wsh. How many did Vick put up in that game?

I talk about Vick “like this” because he’s a 10 year veteran. 10 year vets aren’t supposed to put the ball on the turf 3x in a game. They’re not supposed to throw into triple coverage. Not supposed to throw after passing the line of scrimmage, not supposed to stare at WRS, not supposed to scramble 20x over the past 2 games. Find the outlet!!

You constantly harp about how “terrible” Kolb was for throwing the int in Baltimore. In his first ever action. You do remeber he marched the Birds 90 yrds down to the 2 before that pick right?
Yet no worry about Vick throwing one right into Urlacher’s arms (that he dropped) or the later INT in the endzone. No, for you he “ain’t had a bad game yet.”

So he threw an INT, put the ball in Urlacher’s hands on another poor throw in endzone, and fumbled 3x. Yup. Ain’t bad at all!!

I was at that Saints game. Eagles were down what 3 at half, fumbled kick return and gave ball to Aints at the 10 or so. TD. Now granted Kolb then threw a terriible Int on an out pattern. It was a horrible mistake. In his 2nd start. Against the Superbowl champs who led the league in takeaways.

The question to you is:
Have you seen Kolb throw another pick like that? Nope. He learned from it.

Yet 10 years in VICK MAKES THE SAME MISTAKES HE ALWAYS HAS. Good times all around.

ok…Carolina probably has the worst D, but Houston is close behind.31, 30, 29, 31, 30…these are the pts they gave up in the 5 games before last week.

Don’t worry….Vick will put up 30+ Thursday and you and your Vick apologists will have your creeping doubts asuaged for another week. All will be good in the Vick can lead us to the Superbowl fantasy world you live in.

Eagles had the ball 2 times in the 3rd Quarter and went 3 & out the 1st time they had the ball
and started a drive with 1:26 left on the clock at the 31 Yard line after a kick-off return which led into the 4th Quarter for a 11 play – 67 yard Drive which only amounted to a FG and 3 points which is where the game was lost after have 1st and Goal from the 8 Yard LIne…The FG made is 31-16
instead of 31-20 where the Eagles would have still had a fighting chance with 11 minutes left.
1st down Call was 1 yard run with McCoy off tackle down to the 7 Yard line,Vick
2nd Down Call was a incomplete pass to Avant (short of the end-zone)
3rd Down and Goal, a 3 yard completed pass to the the 3 Yard line to TE Harbor??? (again a pass short of the end-zone)
This my friends was the ball game for all intents and purposes that had some poor execution and decision making by the QB, the WR’s failure to get open (this is when D-Jax needs off the field) for a larger target like Cooper and why throw the ball as a QB short of the end zone (unless a player is wide open which is usually not the case when the Defense only has to cover 10-15 yards of the field
As a QB, you can’t make 2 successive throws short of the End-Zone and expect to score 7 PTs..
Throw the ball into the end-zone or scramble and run it in.. Make a play with your legs if you have to
It’s funny, Eagles win and all I read is Vick is this and Vick is that and you guys creaming all over him..Now they lose, and it’s everyone else’s fault why they lost … the field, the secondary, the LB, WR’s,the Coaching, the Refs, but nothing critical on Vick’s play..
It’s all about the team in my eyes, they all win as a team and lose as a team and yes, I stand by my original analyis that Vick overall Grade was a “C” for the Bears game which was not good enough
to get a Win

@Paulman, if you’ve read any post of mine, I’ve pointed out Vicks interception and fumbles, I account the loss to a team effort, Vick included….What else do you want us to say, start Kolb? what are you looking for? I don’t understand?..I will not be like you and say its Vick’s fault why we loss…you are suggesting just that with your previous posts…

what about the defense? you are only singling out the offense….If the defense doesn’t allow a ten minute drive in the third quarter, could things have gone differently? Be equally as critical with the team play and not just the offense…The way you are talking is that a 28 -13 (14 point swing) whole was single handedly the offenses fault. In which the offense only had the ball one time for approx 30 seconds… Whats funny is you still haven’t manned up and just said that you dont like the man (Vick), that is whats funny…you are as fake as it gets! Everyone that has watched the game knows Vick threw an interception in the red zone, that really hurt the team…At that time, the Eagles were going to take the lead with a field goal or a touchdown…you are running around saying Vick did not play well enoug for the Eagles to win…It is hard for me to comprehend how that is true…21 – 13 at halfime, was deflating…Coming out at halfime, allowing the Bears to score within 1:30 was deflating…Eagles got the ball back at 28 -13..

Fact – Vick is 5 -1 as starter in games in which he has completed, this season…he has thrown one interception…Vick has played well beyond any of your expectations, but yet he is still not playing good enough..

You keep bringing up Kolb’s first 8 games as evidence that Kolb stinks….interesting……So, according to Phillywill’s logic….

After Vick’s first 8 games when he had thrown for 44%, 2 TDs, 3 INTs and had 8 fumbles. Should have tossed him aside I guess.

“0-5 49ers- kolb does what he does vs 0- forever teams a la chiefs and makes false believers”

More brilliant logic….but Vick’s “superstar” performances against pathetic Detroit, disfunctional Jax, Cripled Indy, and quit on the coach Washington make true bleievers!

Everything with the qb debate on this team is soooo OVER-hyped. You can be critical of Vick, but doesn’t mean you think Kolb should be starting. You can make positive statements about Kolb without being accused of wanting Vick out. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Mike Vick has been playing at the highest level of the entire league this year, the highest level of his career. Anyone would expect to see a game with less than spectacular results. It doesn’t mean that he shouldn’e be our starter now, but also doesn’t mean that fans can’t be nervous about some historical tendancies that may be coming back within his play. If we were all Colts fans, with the way many are voicing displeasure, we would be calling for Peytons head this year.

Vick didn’t have his best game on Sunday, but it was not the worst we have witnessed here in recent history either. His play this season has been spectaular at moments, and because of that, we may have been able to ignore other deficiencies in oter areas on the team.

Did you guys really think that we were not going to lose another game this season? It was a road game against a good team, after we had just beaten 3 other good teams. It is not unthinkable that we would lose a game. Why look to throw the QB under the bus after a single loss? There are issues with every team, why would ours be any different? I am really tired of the Kolb / Vick debates with the bashing of each side. I blame Reid for not having an actual QB competition in the summer, but at this point we have hitched our wagon to Vick. Why not support your team?

21 – 13 at halfime, was deflating…Coming out at halfime, allowing the Bears to score within 1:30 was deflating…Eagles got the ball back at 28 -13..

This. Did. Not. Happen.

Chic gat ball and went 3 and out. Eagles then got ball and went Incomplete, sack with fumble, draw play on 3rd and 19. Punt..

Then Chic got ball and drove for 10 mins for TD to go up 28-13.

He has also fumbled 6 times in last 3 games. YOu forget to mention this….which is a pretty big thing to brush over as historically, he fumbles at a very high rate.

While the recovery of fumbles is luck, (and it is just luck that eagles have revocered 7 of his 8 fumbles.) the actual fumbling of the ball is not luck. Its a disturbing trend that you apologists completely ignore.

I don’t want Kolb as the Starter,
I stated and stand by that Vick gives this Eagle team the best chance to win this season.
But he is not Superman and can’t win games by himself, all still have to play well around him..
once in the Red-Zone, the O/L, WR,TE,RB’s all have to dig deeper and not come to expect that VIck
is going to bail them out and scramble and run it in for a TD, but when VIck makes some plays or throws,he is needs to be called out on it too..Too many of you think he can’t do anythong wrong and now that teams have more tape of him, they are defending him a little differently and he needs to make some plays with legs early in games to get the Defense back on his heels..

I think the birds need to spend more time working on ways to stop Schaub & Johnson, then on debating qb’s. We all know that big recievers give us problems, and with the way our defensive backfield played last week, we need to make some BIG adjustments. Hopefully Assante will be back without any knee issues. This is a HUGE game.

vin just wants the qb position given away again certainly not earned

Again, the recovery of fumbles is pure luck….I don’t count recoveries, I count the amount of times the ball is on the turf. He has 8 fumbles and 1 int.

As for the comparison…..I was writing about Vicks first 8 games ever. You keep bringing up Kolbs first ‘8’ games, so I thought we should compare Vicks first 8 games.

Apples to Apples. Kolb blows Vick away in every category. Is it that much of a reach to think that with continued progess he would continue to demolish Vick’s numbers?

We’re not going to be stuck with Vick for 3 years. He’ll continue to struggle as season winds down, then have troube in playoffs. We’ll see how valuable he is then. Not very I don’t think. Hey enjoy the 10-6 and wipeout vs Atl or NO or GB……

u keep looking at fumbles i’ll look at rating
#1 in league pure luck too i know lol
vick having 1 int pure luck
vick 5-1 as starter pure luck
u say luck i say consistent
luck is when u throw a perfrct rated game then lay an egg with a 58 that proves ur last game was lucky thats luck

Vinnie it did happen…the bears scored a TD the first possession of the 3rd quarter

D.Akers kicks 70 yards from PHI 30 to CHI 0. D.Hester to CHI 46 for 46 yards (T.Lindley).
1st and 10 at CHI 46 M.Forte right tackle to CHI 48 for 2 yards (A.Dixon).
2nd and 8 at CHI 48 J.Cutler pass short right to D.Hester pushed ob at PHI 18 for 34 yards (N.Allen). PENALTY on PHI-N.Allen, Horse Collar Tackle, 9 yards, enforced at PHI 18.
1st and 9 at PHI 9 J.Cutler pass short right to G.Olsen for 9 yards, TOUCHDOWN. 13 27
R.Gould extra point is GOOD, Center-P.Mannelly, Holder-B.Maynard. 13 28
R.Gould kicks 64 yards from CHI 30 to PHI 6. J.Calvin to PHI 31 for 25 yards (C.Graham, R.Davis).

you obviously dont watch the game…you are way to consumed with what Vick is doing on the field…

how many int’s and fumbles does our backup QB have?

@Paulman

be critical of the entire team, like I said…dont act as if Vick is the sole reason as to why the loss occurred…its that simple…from the loss, you’ve talked more about what Vick did wrong than anything else..

5-11. Are you sure. You’re being generous.. Kolb, no way he could have beat that WSH team in the 2nd game the way they were playing. They were lights out!! Soooo much effort. Guaranteed loss. No way he could have handled the NYG who giftwrapped the game with 5 turnovers. He would have had no chance against an Indy team that’s currently starting CFLers. 0 chance. And Detroit…how could he ever won that one? They’re so good. They beat everyone. And that powerful Jax team that was 1-1 with rumours about Jack Del Rio’s demise in the news…woulda lost that one. For sure.

I mean he couldn’t even tear the Falcons apart, so how could he have beaten those other teams?

I think you’re being generous with 5-11. He’b be 3-13 at best.

“a bum theres no learning just a bum doing more bum shit”
You mean like a 10 year vet with fumbling problems still fumbling?

You mean like a 10 year vet never good at making reads still looking at one guy then running, (20x last 2 games? Are you serious?)

You mean like a 10 year vet now having put at least 10 balls in to the arms of opposing players (luckily only one caught)

That the kind of “no learning still doing bum shit” you talkin’ about?

i dont know what ur watching ur dude plays good 37.5 % of the time 5/8
so thats 5 wins
