With Vick & Return Of Lee, Philly Is Center Of Sports Universe

With the ascendance of Michael Vick as one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League and the return of Cliff Lee to the city, Philadelphia is without a doubt, now the center of the Sports Universe.

The hopeful trip to the playoffs by the Eagles in January, then the start of spring training in Florida during the month of February could be one of the most exciting periods in Philadelphia sports history.

Prior to Lee’s decision to return here, Vick has been the number one story in the NFL this year.  All NFL fans and even people who aren’t sports fans, know about Vick and his return to stardom.

The Flyers have been playing well and showing promise that this might be a special year for them.  We won’t bother mentioning the Sixers.

Now out of no where, Lee returns and rocks Major League Baseball.  You can see panic on the face of the front office people of other teams in the league.  They don’t know what to do.

This also means the Phillies must win it all next year or face tremendous criticism.  A team with four number one starters should be expected to win it all.  Nothing else would be satisfactory.

On a side note:  We’ve got to come out with a nickname for this group.   Can you think of an acceptable nickname for Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels?

I think many in Miami thought the Heat should win it all. I’m not sure how the reality will work out. The Yankees have been putting all-star teams together for the past 2 decades. They have won a lot, but not every year. Regardless in should be fun.

Nickname: Phillys Four and a half men.

One title since i was in grade school. We have some good players, hardly the center of the sports universe. The Eagles haven’t won jack yet, the Flyers are 0-fer since before my parents knew each other, and the Sixers are still trying to replace Moses.

Wow Greenfan, infringing on my turf….
If you are correct, I will send you some authentic Carolina Barbeque Pork to enjoy..
I really thought there would have been announcement during the weekend after the Thursday night game with the Texans…but since there wasn’t, I really think the Eagles will wait until after the Season on any talks with any players about contracts,extensions,etc,etc.. I really think that Coach AR has this club focused on the task at hand and playing 1 game at a time, I don’t think he would
want the Front Office,Players,Agents and Coaches to have to be worrying or distracted about contract negoitiations at this point and time.. .Too much focus on the games/playoff run right now…
but you could be right…

Well BSM, the NBA season is a long way from over. I expect by the time playoffs start the team would be fully meshed and make a good run. And those expectations are reasonable for a team with those stars. The Phillies should have the same expectations as the Miami Heat. If they don’t win it all it would be one the of biggest disappointments in Philadelphia sports ever. Period.

I thought last years failure to bring home a World Seres Championship by the Phillies is one of the
All-Time disappointments by a Philly Team.. Hell, they didn’t even make it to the World Series and were outmanaged, outhit and outpitched by the San Francisco Giants who indeed got on a roll late in the year but a team the Phils would probably beat 7 out of 10 Series, I believe..
I hope 10 years from now, we are not looking back, like a lot of Atlanta Braves fans do ,and say to themselves, for having such great teams for 10 years and dominating the NL East and to only have 1 Championship to show for it, is disappointing and really a “Choke” if you think about it…
This 2011 Phillie should win 100 + games and be well positioned to compete for the World Sereis
The Key will be Rollins,& Utley and Lidge…If they can stay healthy, they should be fine and dominate

I agree Paulman. We literally had people calling the radio stations talking about how the team from last year was probably the best team ever even though the playoffs didn’t even start. They were expecting them to coast through the playoffs and handily win the world series against anyone. This year, the expectations will be even greater with this pitching rotation. If we do not win the world series, biggest disappointment ever.

It seems like whenever Philly teams are favored to win a Championship, they choke and lose..
Look at Super Bowl vs Raiders in 1980,the recent NFC Champ failures vs the Bucs,Panthers and Cardinals. How many times have the Flyers been a top Seed in the East only to get knocked out
in the early rounds before even getting to the Stanly Cup Finals (usually by the Buffalo Sabres too)
For all those great 79ers Teams in the late 70’s/early 80’s, they still only managed 1 Championship
The Phillies on paper should win the NL East by 15 games but I am sure it will be a closer race as it usually is. The Braves looked like they have improved a little and the Marlins and Nats will be about the same while the Mets will be rebuilding once again. The Reds are awful young with a developing PItching staff and the Cardinals will be tough as well as the Giants,Rockies, and it appears the Dodgers will be a little better too..

Can’t disagree there Paulman. In many sports when 1 team is heavily favored they often lose. Anything can happen. I mean to be honest, we’d be just as beatable as last year with an injury to 1 of our pitchers and a hitting slump. Who knows what will happen. But right now, everyone is healthy it’s World Series or bust.

Yes Greenfan, that’s Western NC Barbecue… (Ketchup/Tomato based versus Vinegar based like they have in Eastern NC.)
To PW,
I know Eagles were underodgs in SB vs the Pats but weren’t the Eagles favored vs Arizona where they were a 9-7 Team during the regular season and then go on a roll in the playoffs…
and only had the home game since the won the NFC West and the Eagles were a WIld-Card..

Silva… turn on your TV. Who are they talking about… Lee and Vick. The Eagles are in 1st in their division, the Flyers are in first place in the entire NHL and the Phils just signed Cliff Lee to give them 4 guys that would be the ace of almost every other team in the league. Nova is still rolling and hell, even Drexel beat Louisville. It is a good time to be in Philly. Stop being that guy that has to be negative when everyone else is positive under the guise of keeping it real.

I would like to see Bruiser Flint get an real opportunity to Coach a Division I program..
I always thought he would be a great fit for Temple after J Cheney left.. I like Fran Dunphy too,but
think Flint could get them better kids and keep them at a top 25 Program consistently
Even Penn State, which does just a terrible job in recruiting playing the Big Ten,
they have nice facilities, great campus (if you don’t mind the middle of nowhere) but are in the basement every year, which is inexcusable… Another Joe Paterno masterpiece, mistake and a program that he’s run into the gound by moving Penn State into the Big 10 which is not where they belong…

Man no one would have been favored against the Pats LOL. In the playoffs they dropped 41 points on the leagues best defense (Steelers) and held the leagues best offense (Colts) to 3 points. But in Philly, when we signed TO, we immediately said “we’re winning the Super Bowl now”. And it’s the same talk now that Lee is back. Not saying it won’t happen, just saying it better happen.

Bugs, what did I say that is untrue? The Patriots look better every week, Vick is a great story, but nobody has us in the top 3 or 4 in the NFL. The Birds still have plenty to prove this year. The Flyers get a free pass every year that goes by without a Stanley Cup, just because they beat people up before I was born. The Phils are strong, no question, I appreciate the efforts, they will get more of my money this summer. The Cliff Lee signing is excellent, but we are not the center of the world, just the center of our world. Plus, I want Nova to lose every game, I am an SJU grad, so that means jack to me. The only good thing to come from Villanova was Bwest.

Howie Long of the Raiders, Bruce Finneran,of te Falcons, Ray Vetrone of Cleveland Browns
and Darrell Young of the Redskins all went to Villanova ..
This kid they have now Matt Scuzur looks like he could compete at the NFL Level as a WR/H-Back, WIldcat QB or something, plus he was drafted by Chicago Cubs as a Baseball players and in his free time, became a bone-marrow donor who helped save a young girls life..
What a person this Scuzur is .. I rather read about this type of person than D-Jax stating garbage “they are going to have to pay me…”
