Meaningful Quotes After Eagles-Giants Battle

It was an amazing and improbable comeback by the Birds.  The fact that it ended so suddenly with DeSean Jackson’s punt return left Eagles fans spellbound and exhausted.

How could all of that happen so quickly after struggling for the entire game?

What a thrill ride.  It was better than any action-packed movie.  I always say that sports competitions are the best “reality show” on television.

There were ups and downs and when it was over all we could do was smile.  Andy Reid and his players were talking to the media before they had come down from the high of the astonishing victory over the Giants.

We saw and heard Andy like we had never seen him before.  He was a like a little kid in front of the media.  The big guy was jabbing the reporters and loving every minute of it.

There were a huge number of comments by the coaches and players after the game.  I thought many of them were quite profound.  They were throwing around superlatives after this one and rightfully so.

Vick has led the Birds to four comeback victories this season, but he said the comeback win over the Giants has been the sweetest up until now.

“By far, this is one of the greatest comebacks of my career, being down by such a huge deficit,” said quarterback Michael Vick.

There’s already talk about Giants coach Tom Coughlin’s job being in danger.

“I’ve never been around anything like this in my life,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.

The comeback cut the Giants hearts out of their chests.

“It’s about as empty as you get to feel in this business, right there.” Coughlin lamented.

After the comeback had been completed New York tight end Kevin Boss sat on the Giants bench with his head between his hands.

“I’m in disbelief … I’m in shock,” Giants tight end Kevin Boss said in a whisper.

Giants defensive lineman Justin Tuck was trying to put a good face on collapse.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and we’re not dead,” said Tuck.

He praised Vick after the game.

“Vick is the athlete of the year,” Tuck said. “He has my vote for MVP. Give him a lot of credit, man. He put his team on his back and really carried them to a victory today.”

Michael Vick had a problem with the way the Giants handled themselves during and after the game.

“I have a lot of respect for the New York Giants,” Vick said. “I just thought that for them to walk off the field at the end really didn’t show good sportsmanship. But we still have the utmost respect for those guys. They were doing a lot of talking. We just wanted to come out and play a good football game.”

New York had been in control of the football game for 52.5 minutes but lost that control down the stretch and it cost them the NFC East title.

“This game is all about momentum. We had it in the first half. They had it in the second,” Giants center Shaun O’Hara said. “I don’t think there are enough words in the dictionary to describe how we feel right now.”

Vick was also very well aware of the change in momentum.

“They just gave us some opportunities. I think, once we made a couple of plays downfield, I saw the momentum shift. They started playing off – they were playing real deep.”

Jackson used part of the time for post game interview to make the same point he made last week when he was facing criticism for showboating before scoring.

“I like to do things for excitement,” Jackson said of his outlandish celebration. “That’s what the fans and all the crowd pay for. So I like to bring that out.”

I don’t know what was going on with Giants head coach Tom Coughlin because he went out immediately after Jackson scored and tried to get an explanation from his punter about why he kicked a line drive at Jackson, then he took the responsibility for it.

“I’ll take full responsibility for the last play,” Coughlin said. “With him back there, you don’t punt the ball to him.”

The young punter took the blame for giving the explosive Jackson a chance to end the game.

“I tried so hard to kick it out of bounds, and you just lose your head. That’s what happened,” said Dodge. “Definitely out of bounds the whole way. . . . Not a good time to hit a line drive, that’s for sure. I had plenty of time, just not executing. Nothing more you can say. You can’t give the most explosive returner in the game a line-drive in a situation like that.”

After listening to Dodge, you could tell that it wasn’t just Coughlin who had chewed him out after the game.  A teammate or two must have said something to him.

“I’m sure you could guess [Coughlin’s message],” Dodge said. “Everyone on that sideline did. And I knew it. They didn’t have to tell me. It wasn’t rocket science not to kick it to him with [14] seconds left. But sometimes you don’t execute as well as you’d like.”

Stat Sheet courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles:

Come Back Kids … Despite trailing 24-3 at halftime and 31-10 in the fourth quarter, the Eagles mounted an epic comeback, capped by 65-yard punt return touchdown by WR DeSean Jackson as time expired. It was the Eagles fourth come-from-behind win in their last five games (including two against the Giants). They have outscored opponents 79-21 in the fourth quarter during that span. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the ninth time in NFL history that a team trailed by 21 points in the fourth quarter and won the game, and the first ever by the Eagles. The last time it happened was on 11/26/06, when the Titans beat the Giants 24-21 after trailing 21-0 in the fourth quarter … ESB also believes it is the only game-winning punt return as time expired in NFL history … The Eagles 28 fourth-quarter points were the most in team history.

G. Cobb – I apologize for the sloppy copy which was put erroneously earlier.

That game should send a message to every team in the league….you NEVER have enough of a lead on the Eagles to feel comfortable…..the explosion in the 1st qtr against the Redskins was nothing compared to the 28 points in 7 1/2 minutes to end the game….this team can never be counted out….you need to look at the leadership being shown by Vick, these guys absolutely follow his lead….get ready for some more fun games ahead

our offense is the best in football this season.
because of our average oline, our playcalling has to be on point, when its not we go through lulls.
games against the jaguars, texans, colts, mnf redskins, first giants game manifest our eagles offense
thats who we are and it shows our potential

the 4th qtr.miracle was a thing of beauty. that had nothing to do with our talent and potential.
that was meant to be, vick in his road to redemption for mvp willed us to offensively
the defense fed off of that and the momentum shift was obvious and we played great 2nd half defense
our defense lost a handful of key players and played stoutly, and had clutch 3rd down stops

then desean capped it off on a fortuitious bounce on the muffed punt and basically explains the comeback
i will take it, and its our time eagles fans, its our time to have a storybook season and ending

“you need to look at the leadership being shown by Vick, these guys absolutely follow his lead….”

+1

you can tell by listening to them… They act almost giddy after games…. Desean is the most cocky guy in football and he seems to get giddy when he talks about Vick… McCoy and the others also.. They just start going on about #7 and his will to win and his attitude in the huddle… These guys are absolutely sold on this QB.

It’s ironic that Vick would be simulating a boxer because this was the football version of the “Classic Rope a Dope” that Ali pulled off on George Forman “back in the day”.
