More coaching changes needed, but Andy should stay

After the Eagles’ second-straight one-and-done performance in the playoffs, people are clamoring for change. This guy has to be cut. Bring in this guy. Fire this coach. Fire that coach. You know the drill.

And I agree that changes need to be made, but it’s not time for Andy Reid to go. Andy has some deficiencies (throws too much, in-game management), but he’s still the man with the plan that has run a tight ship in Philadelphia and kept them in playoff contention year after year.

That said, some changes need to be made and you can see the Eagles are well aware of that after they booted Sean McDermott and Rory Seagrest. But, who will replace these guys? My big concern is that they will continue to promote from within. It can be a good thing at times to find in-house replacements as good coaches move up the ranks, but there are times (like now) that a fresh approach is needed in some areas.

We’re hearing the name Jim Mora for defensive coordinator right now, but what about Eric Mangini? As a head coach, I didn’t like that he walked around like Bill Belichick as though he had accomplished what Belichick has. But, we know he’s a good defensive coordinator, and I mentioned the other day that I wouldn’t have a problem with the Birds going to the 3-4 if they can find a nose tackle.

I was texting with a league source yesterday who mentioned Mangini and even Josh McDaniels as potential new coordinators for the Eagles (of course that means that they’d boot Marty). As he said, “get some of that Patriots knowledge in there.” I’m all for it. Yes, I know the Pats lost today, but we all agree they have an elite coaching system going on up there. The Chiefs injected some New England Patriots into their team (Scott Pioli) and look how that turned out. They were absolutely horrific in 2009, and they were a playoff team in 2010.

It would be new people who could offer new ideas and maybe help the Eagles tweak some of their philosophies. That’s why I was happy that they brought Dick Jauron in earlier. Say what you want about Jauron, but I’d rather they bring him as opposed to making Rory Seagrest the new secondary coach.

The Eagles don’t need to get rid of Andy Reid. However, they do new people in here and it seems like they are going to do that. Hopefully, they bring in the right people. Reid brings too much to the table to just get rid of him and as I’ve said all along when it comes to making big changes to the QB position and to the head coach…careful what you wish for.

Would you feel a lot better about the Eagles if they added Mangini at the very least? Will you be okay if the new defensive coordinator is Jim Mora? Bill Davis? Who do you want to see the Eagles bring in? Should they stick with the 4-3?

What is that Reid brings to the table that salivates you so much? Contending for playoff spot? You are right on if you want to be average and nothing more. Let the truth not stand in the way of facts that Eagles haven’t contended for playoff every year. There have been a few years when they didn’t make playoffs. I personally am at a point where I see nothing good going forward. I would much prefer to have won 1 Super Bowl and sucked for a decade. I would prefer the record of Ravens over the last decade. A team that won once and sucked a few years but contends for playoff spot most years.

I’d like to see what you guys can come up with in regards to these guys. What’s their d’s like. I mean… I’m not super pumped about any of the 3 they’ve named. Mora maybe a little but I’m with you…. Let’s go in an entirly different direction. I don’t want andy near my D and I don’t want anyone andy wants near my D. Know what I mean? He’s a bit soft.

Good article and points Micha,
The Key is to me is that who is dictating these Changes..
If Coach AR who is is extremely stubborn and very loyal to (almost to a fault sometimes)
has come to the realization that changes in the Coaching staff and especially on the Defensive side
needed to be done to get this Defense and Team back in deeper playoff contention, then that’s great
But my sense is that he is being forced to make these changes by Roseman and Banner, which in time is not good for it will make Coach AR become even more panicky and paranoid about other important decisions like free-agency,drafting,.I don’t think Coach AR will handle this “Hot Seat” situation that he is now own all the well. Coach AR is a man of routine, process and is very well organized, now it appears that he may be surrounding by other Coaches (and maybe not of his choosing) and I think it will create some issues down the pike.. Now if the FO and AR had a real down to earth Pow-Wow with Coach AR and he bought into it, then he may be able to rationalize that change was needed and be fine moving forward.. but if this was forced down on him without much of a recourse or meetings and such, then Coach AR may become uncomfortable working for this group for too much longer… My Guess is that this will be his final season as HC of the Eagles..

Jim Mora Jr is a solid Defensive Coach..
He does have bit of an ego but I think he could come in and be a team player as he resumes his Coaching career..
Bill Davis has been around and is a well-respected Coach who has been the Dc for the Cardinals DC
for the last few years who were onto to something special there, but their Defense has been hit hard with losing free-agents like Antre Rolle, Karlos Dansby and others the last couple of off-season..
The Cardinals ran a 3-4 as a base Defense.
Word is the the Oakland Raiders are terminating their DC John Marshall who has been with them a few years ..

You’re crazy, Micah. The Eagles have won in spite of Reid, not because of him.

i just did research this weekend analyzing what the past Super Bowl winners did and did not do since 1988. They all ran the ball atleast 28 times even if their rb were averaging 3 yds a carry. This year McCOY ave 5.1 Harrison 6.1 Another fact is SB teams had 2 Defense players with atleast 10 Sacks. This year it was Cole with 10 no one else close. Eagle Sb yr top person with sacks was Kearse with 7.5 next person had 6. Always one of two was a LB and Steelers in both SB wins had two people with 10 or more sacks and they were LB

Manning only Super Bowl win Colts ran 42 times. Colts SB loss last year ran 18. Patriots loss to Giants ran 16 times. Patriots against our Eagles 28. Eagles with Andy with Westbrook averaging 5.2 for season against patriots……….17

While we’re firing….how about getting rid of the guy responsible for communicating the challenges to Andy from the booth? He have been stealing a check forever!

I’m 2 for 2 so far……I wanted a two game test for Kolb before wasting the season – Got it!
I wanted Segrest outta here – Got it!

Can anyone identify the guy communicating replays to Andy from the booth?

That must be a family member stealing a check.

another thing

No one wants Marty as head coach because he refuse to challenge Reid’s philosophy.

Brad Childress expressed his desire to run the ball while he was here and did it when the opportunity opend as head coach of the Vikings.

The biggest friend of the passing game is the RUN game.

You can not beat good teams one dimensional!!!!!!

Hear us Lurie???

Alot of the successful defenses are running the 3-4 scheme……The Ravens, Steelers, Patiots, Jets, Dallas (Not this Season) GB, and so on…….. I think we need to make some moves up front perhaps trading patterson and Bunkley…. ANd making Dixon our primary starter at NT…….. I think we need to play 4-6 bear and 3-4 bear…….. If we move Clayton to SS thats size to help stop the run……. We need to put fear with this defense…… Make teams and people say this eagles defense is scary…… We dont hear that anymore………..

Hey Micha..good info, BUT…..I don’t know about everybody else, but I really can no longer stand when we are told, “Be careful what you wish for”…..guess what…..the majority of eagles fans are informed about this team….we may be emotional at times, but we get frustrated when it appears very obvious that with some simple philosphical changes we can achieve much more then we have been getting over the past half decade…….I seem to remember the national media giving us the same “be careful…” warning about McNabb (Chris Berman….I remember what you said) and who turned out to be right with that one?? Give us more credit Micha…our wish is for a championship, why do we need to be constantly chastised to settle for less??

Imagine the danger if WSH stayed with the 4-3 defense and Haynesworth didnt have issues with Shanahan……. What if they kept Dixon and they had Haynesworth and Dixon at the DT position…. Andre Carter had his best season ever when Haynesworth didnt have issues with the 3-4 defense…… If we stick to 4-3 defense or 4-4 and perhaps we take a shot on getting Haynesworth and Dixon OMGOSH!!!!!!!!!!!! This defense would CAUSE HAVOC……. WE would have a feared defense once agian…..

I’ll give Vick another season and he will be better than most of these Qb’s…… Tom Brady gave up and went down with out a fight…… If Vick had half the time Brady has in the pocket Vick will SKY ROCKET with success in this league……. Someone told me would you take Brady or Vick….. I gotta go with my boy Vick…… He’s a fighter and Brady went down faster than a STRIPPER ON WELFARE with 5 KIDS LOL!!!!!!!! Vick will be the man next season……… AR needs to build up front for him to be successful…… GO EAGLES

How many coaches have won a Super Bowl after being with a team for more than 12 seasons? Can someone honestly answer this question. How many years was Cowher the Steelers coach before they finally won?

At this point the Eagles winning a Lombardi with Reid would be an anomaly. The chances of it happening are not very good. Who’s to say the next coach hired couldn’t win won with Reid’s players like Gruden did with Dungy’s Bucs? Why are some people so afraid of change?

@Phillyatheart……. We’ll never win one with Reid because he comes up with the same scheme every season…….. His dis-trust in his men and staff to get the job done….. So why should we as fans trust him to get the job done to win the SB……..

@ phillyatheart….agreed…..why all the fear about making a change…what could happen?? Like we might not win a superbowl? We don’t win them now, why would we expect to win them with a new staff?? The time for change was 2-3 years ago, so whenever it can happen will be better for the team.

Look….in my opinion, Reid has many good traits as a coach and taken us to a higher level then when he first arrived…however….much like Dungy in TB, he had taken them as far as he could and needed a change in scenery to finnally win a championship in Indy (and don’t forget, that change also benefitted TB with a championship the following season). A real win / win situation if I ever heard one.

I would like to have a Win situation HERE….make the change and look to the future. Doing the same thing and expecting different…..oh well….nevermind….doubt this FO has the guts right now to jettison the “Golden Goose” as long as the cash keeps flowing in.

I still think Owner Jeff Lurie should sell th Eagles to some investment group out in Los Angeles..
maybe a group headed up by Mark Wahlburg and then they can really play in the “Land of the Wussies”
Then the Linc can be converted to the largest “Green Doggie Park” in the Nation..
Face it, this franchise is spooked and cursed and will never win a Super Bowl Championship in our lifetimes and I still blame former Owner Leonard Tose…

Are you kidding me….Who do you think is making all of these bonehaead decisions. not running the football, always looking for the big play, poor clock management, no in game adjustments, defense is too small, poor red zone offense and defense. Give me a break here, who do you think is hiring the clown coaches???? You cut the head of the snake off (AR) and clean house. Get a HC coach in here who will run a more balanced attack not be so predictable every single year. AR is the Damn problem when will you people see this????

I’m disappointed just like most fans concerning the way this season ended. The NFC championship was right there for the taking. If the Eagles would have beaten the Viking they probably would be facing the Packers for the NFC championship this week and who knows maybe a Super bowl win. Like most fans I think they need to run the ball more and they need to stop drafting midget Lineman.
With that being said I did not think they needed to make wholesale changes in the coaching staff with the exception of Segrest. I think there were allot of positive things that happen this season. They had 10 wins easily 11 and turned over the roster and they are very young. Concerning Reid I think he has changed at times. I can remember not that long ago people said Reid just drafted lineman and didn’t care about skilled positions. Now the Eagles may have the best young weapons in the NFL
