Winston Moss Shows An Eagerness To Be Eagles Defensive Coordinator

Green Bay Packers Assistant Head Coach Winston Moss seemed to be letting everyone know that he thinks a lot of Andy Reid and the Eagles football team and he’s very interested in coming here to be the defensive coordinator.

Philly.com Jeff McLane interviewed Moss yesterday at media day at the Super Bowl and from the way he answered the questions, he couldn’t have done anything more to let the Eagles know that he’s interested in the job.

“The Eagles have some established talent there right now,” Moss said. “It would be fun to work with that group. They work extremely hard. They play on a fanatical level. They have some playmakers on that defense. In carefully looking at them and then competing against them twice [this season], that would be a fantastic opportunity.”

Play on a fanatical level?  Excuse me, what fanatical level?  On defense?

Could he have been more complimentary of the Eagles franchise?  I guess he had started talking about the multiple Super Bowl championships that the Eagles have won.  I’m sorry they haven’t won any, yet.

“It’s a very tough culture there,” he said. “It’s a very aggressive culture there. It’s a very fearless culture. You can tell how Andy Reid attacks people from his offensive scheme that that’s what he wants. And I believe that I have that same passion. I have that same relentless, fearless desire to get a defense to want to be able to compete at that same level.”

Tough culture?  Aggressive culture?  Fearless culture?  Maybe on offense, but it hasn’t been there defensively or they wouldn’t be looking for a defensive coordinator.

How could he be do a better job of interviewing for the Eagles defensive coordinator’s job than he comments yesterday to Philly.com’s Les Bowen?

“There are only rumors working right now,” Moss, 45, said. “But I got into this, coaching, to coordinate. I had a passion about calling plays. I can bring out the best in players. I can bring out the best in a group of men. With that being said, I would look forward to the challenge. Not only to be a coordinator, but to be a successful coordinator, a championship coordinator.”

He comments seem to be to Reid and Eagles fans.  Do you think somebody told him about how hungry Eagles fans are for a Super Bowl Championship team?

Is he aware of the love Eagles have for former Eagles defensive wizard Jim Johnson?  Is sure sounds like it when you read his answer to how much of an influence Johnson had on him when he worked under him in Seattle?

“He had such an impact on me that I will carry it the rest of my life,” Moss said. “He was such a tough guy. It was almost like a mentorship.”

He sure is answering his interview questions early! I’d be satisfied with him as our DC.

Hey G, can you do an article on how our current personnel would fit a 3-4 scheme like some people believe we might be switching to? Or what would be needed, personnel wise, to make an effective change happen this off-season. (Pretend a new CBA isn’t ongoing or not).

Just a request. Thanks.

Maybe a little too much so…
Does anyone get the feeling that the Packers have a lot of distractions going on…
Between the photo-shoot with the players from Injured reserve.. half their coaching staff that
will be intereviewed by various clubs… I like the Steelers more and more as this game gets closer
Steelers 26 – Packers 20

if moss wants to be here, i will take him. as far as personel our defense might be ok with a new direction (washburn) and 1 or 2 pickups. i really want to upgrade o line to protect vick and maybe have a more ball control offense . our deffense will be better if they are on the field less.

Yeah, McDermott talked a good talk too and talk is cheap. This guy needs to show a singular focus this week on the SB. Does this show a lack of focus? I’d a felt more comfortable with a “they’ll be time for that stuff after the game, next question”

As I said yesterday. It’s a done deal. And he’s coming from the Packers.

Jeffie Lurie is a very good business man and has made good hires for the big Roles. So far every head coach has gotten the eagles to the playoffs and won coach of the year.

His big mistake was building the team after a west coast francise(49ers) that happens to be on the East Coast.

Moss makes perfect sense…… anyone else would be a flop…..these guys the Eagles are interviewing now have no business running a defense in the NFL…. they are just buying time until after the SB….

Moss sounds like he would be a solid hire. Has this guy just worked on 3-4 Ds, and can he possibly run a 4-3 with the help of Washburn and some of the coaches who are already here?? Again, I’m okay with them switching to a 3-4 as long as the scouts on the team can get the players that are needed though the draft and free agency. They don’t have to be superstars as long as they are solid players who can work in the defensive scheme.

Forgot to add, maybe these other guys that the Eagles are interviewing are going to be the rest of D coaching staff?

Maybe I’m wrong on this and I apologize if I am, but outside of a nose tackle, why does everyone think we need to get guys for a 3-4? I feel like we already have the personnel for a 3-4. Both Trent Cole and Brandon Graham would probably both be better suited as LBs in a 3-4 and both of them were actually LBs in college. I think Graham was a tweener. Again, I might be wrong in this so correct me if I am.

I thought everyone was so against this guy before… either way I just want to build up our defense to be top 5 material and really hard to play against. We can beef up our o line to protect vick hopefully through the draft because I do not know if there are too many free agents for RG, could be wrong. And we need to go through free agency for defense at least for the immediate impact players

@Btc……. Jim Johnson brought a little of everything…….. He brought a little 3-4 in some games against NE some years back…….. I think the Eagles are looking for a very versatile style of coaching to prepare for certain teams…… If you look at it the best qb’s struggle against certain schemes….. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees to name a few play terrible against the 3-4……. Thats what J.J. was trying to do week by week prepare for certain teams……. Mcdermott had the same stuff week after week and didnt utilize the right men to play there part…….. I think Philly is looking for a CHESS MASTER instead of a Checkers guy if you ask me!!!

Logan Mankins I believe is a RG and who I think the Eagles should target in FA.

Coach Greg Williams of the N.O. Saints prepared week after week to get the defense prepared against different teams…… When He was the DC for WSH he was successful against us because all he did was rush 3 and drop 8 men back……. He knew that Mcnabb wasnt going to run…… ANd he knew that the Eagles weren’t going to run the ball for sure……….. You have to prepare week by week and use men who have there strenghts in certain formations……. I think if we put graham on the outside of a pass rush standing up he’ll be a serious problem to the opposing team……. Use trent cole more in different positions to rush the passer he’ll cause problems…… I think they are moving in the right direction if they get moss as a DC!!!

Jim Johnson a “defensive wizard”? Maybe during the regular season, but too often during the playoffs, they collapsed. If they hadn’t the Eagles could be holding at least 2 Lombardi trophies. Sorry, Mr Cobb, but if you’re going to blast away at Reid like you so often do–and sometimes it’s called for–then you have to blast Johnson’s defenses as well. And before you say that he didn’t have the talent or Reid didn’t provide him with the talent, you were on here in the past saying how Reid depended too much on Ray Rhodes’ defensive players–and most of those were responsible for at least the first two NFCCG losses.

Winston Moss has my vote. This guy seems like he’d be a great d-coordinator, and I like the fact that he worked under the great Jim Johnson. He understands that it is “a tough culture”. Our defense used to be very physical until McDermott took over. I think Winston Moss could help bring back that physical side of our defense that we’ve been missing. If we can’t get Moss, go after Perry.

Like i’ve been sayin Moss is the Only man for the job imo, if they get neone else i will be very dissapointed. I just hope they dont get some off the wall guy to try an prove there smarter then everybody like they always do. An we should go all out to sign cullen jenkins in fa maybe moss can help with that he can get that pass rush from the DT position that we’ve been lacking for yrs.

This is because he has already taken the DC job. It’s just not official because it can’t be. This is also why Reid isn’t really in a hurry.

The defense was good enough to win championships…… I could of sworn some years back against Tampa mcnabb threw a pick to Ronde Barber and he returned it for a TD……. Mcnabb threw two picks in the superbowl when he only threw 8 all season long????….. The Panthers defense with Ricky Manning jr. killed us because we had Todd Pinkston and James Thrash as Wideouts…….. Mcnabb threw the ball 49 times with 1td and 1int…….. and oly completed 26 passes…… The defense was on the field more than the offense….. So what does that say……… They were tired….. Nobody can blame this eagles defense some years back……. It’s just the mental mistakes and being out played against the other team!!!

phillywill you dont know what your talking about, chrissS jenkins plays both for the pack because they run a 3-4 he weighs about 305 for us he would be a DT. I juss listened to an interview with ricky sapp he said he put on 15 lbs,i think with washburn an sapps ability i liked him coming out he will be a solid contributor this season as a pass rush specialist.

All signs point to Moss as the guy. It feels that all these defensive back/secondary coaches are being interviewed for our secondary position. Wasburn left Tennesse because the ship was going down, why would he come here if Andy and the FO didn’t have a plan. As assitant DC Moss looks like he has grasp of the whole defense and has background in both 4-3 and 3-4. Plus, we have not brought in anybody to interview for LB coach.

He sures does sound like he has a hand shake deal to become a coordinator. Talked like it was from a script. But I like that he’s ready to assume this position and has publically embraced the fans, environment, etc.

The one thing that is amazing to me (because I’m a critic of Jim Johnson) is the universal respect for Jim Johnson throughout Defensive coaching circles. It leads me to believe that he coached his butt off with less than stellar talent (stating the obvious to some). He brought us this small fast scheme without linebackers for the most part (name one outside of Trot who left a lasting impression who Rhodes drafted btw) and made it work for years surperbly some would say. Makes me think if we had playmaking Linebackers (grocery shoppers are horrible evaluators at this position) behind those runt d-linemen that maybe we would have at least two rings.
