Goodell: Vick Not Attending Party, Fans Want An 18-Game Regular Season

NFL Commission Roger Goodell just defended Michael Vick after being asked a question by Howard Eskin of 610-WIP.  Goodell said he had talked to Vick and been told by the Eagles quarterback that people were using his name to promote Super Bowl parties without his permission.

Goodell reiterated what Tony Dungy said earlier in the day that Vick won’t be attending or hosting any Super Bowl parties.

“I spoke to Michael three times in the last two weeks about his schedule here,” he said. “He has said on numerous occasions people have been using his name about being involved in some type of party and he had no intention of participating in that. I’m extremely proud of what Michael has done. He’s taken his responsibility seriously.”

The NFL Commissioner said that NFL fans want an 18 game schedule.  I don’t know why Goodell is making that type of statement.  I personally thing the 16 game schedule is what fans want, but they don’t want to be forced to buy preseason game tickets as part of their season ticket package.

“We started this with the fans,” Goodell said. “The fans have clearly stated that they don’t like the preseason. We have a 20-game format, 16 regular season games and four preseason games, and the fans have repeatedly said the preseason games don’t meet NFL standards. And that is the basis on which we started this 18-game concept, taking two low-quality preseason games and turning them into two high-quality regular season games.”

Clearly the owners want to charge the networks more money because they would have a longer regular season.  An 18-game regular season will be more taxing on the bodies of the players.  It sounds like the 18 game schedule will be an item that the owners will insist on.

Horrible new conference. Just horrid.
Nearly every answer sounded shallow and demeaning to the inteligance of the fans.

Goddel is more like Bud Selig everyday…..

That’s because every question was shallow and demeaning. Not more than that can be expected from a media that would run with a TMZ post as credible news.

I as one fan am not in favor of the 18 game schedule..
It sounds flashy and great that thewre is more football, but many things need to be addressed
Is 2 Pre-season weeks/games enough to evaluate a Roster, are star plays in “football” shape
after playing a couple of weeks.. The Quality of play the 1st few weeks is shaky at best with a lot of pulled hammys, lots of penalties, just sloppy football… The end of the Season has 1-2 weeks of many meaningless games when it’s the front-runners vs crappy teams.. Does this mean even more weeks of meaningless games…
Then the injuries.. The Rosters would have to be enlarges. the active game day roster would have to be enlarges and all teams practice squads should be enlarged to 10 Practice players and those players should be protected by the teams who place them there..

Who is Goodell asking? I have yet to speak to anyone that wants an 18-game season (with that said I am sure I will now hear people in favor of it). He is ruining the game. I understand the need to make changes to improve something, but if something isn’t broke why keep trying to fix it? I really don’t like where things seem to be going with him. A seeming lack of interest in what fans want and a smug arrogance toward others. Wait, who else have I heard this about?

Don’t want 18-game reg season; another 2 games would just drag it out, even if you knock off two preseason games (prefer reduced anyway to 2-3). Get to playoffs and be done with it. No fun seeing players go down late in season, and it jeopardizes the following season with guys not ready physically for TC. Could care less what owners want anyway.

His answer about the Chiefs and Jets cutting office staff was just horrible. He’s throwing out “tough econmomic times” as the reason. What a jerk and phoney. I used to really like this guy…..

an 18 game season will ruin football…..teams will need to be able to carry more players on the active roster and the draft could be expanded to more rounds…..this is all because injuries will run rampant with 18 games…. its a stupid idea and anyone who supports it is not thinking logically, only being selfish thinking about the money (aka owners)

Goodell is twisting what the fans want to mean what he and the owners want, like a spin doctor. I never heard any fan that knows anything about the game; say that they want 18 regular season games. What they want is for the NFL to stop charging full prices for 4 ridiculous scrimmages. 2 more regular season games will further deteriorate an already depleted supply of quality players. Any NFL fan that was watching the game for several seasons before the move to the 16 game schedule and the addition of several teams will tell you the quality of the players on teams has dropped significantly. They’ll expand the rosters with more anemic players to compensate for more games, injuries and shortened careers for the lessening number of quality players. I see nothing good coming from this.

Paulman’s plan

Reduce the Pre-Season the 3 games
Have an entire week off between the last Pre-Season game and the start of Regular Season
Have Team’s Roster increased to 60 Players (and allow them all to be active on game days)
Have 10-Man Practice squads that are named after final cutdowns and those players are only property of that team that designates them as such and no picking up or cutting players from the Practice squads.. You keep what you designate to help groom and develop these younger players
Get rid of the IR tag where once a player is on it, he is finished for the season, If a player ends up with a Season ending injured (ACL/Achilles/etc,etc) then you replace that spot on the roster from your
Practice sqaud and then you add another player to the practice squad to give you 10 Players on it at all times.

Scratch the Thursday night games and Have a Sat Evening game of the Week instead.. Thursday night games make too many short weeks with little preparation for each team, then they get too long of a break afterwards
Let the NFL Channel carry a Sat Night game
