Vick: “Proud to be an Eagle, 2011 will be a huge success!”

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is happy to still be an Eagle after having the franchise tag slapped on him. He’s been tweeting the good news out for about 45 minutes now.

Vick tweeted a little over a half-hour ago: “Proud to be an Eagle . 2011 will be a huge success !” Vick’s fans have been congratulating him on the news and he’s been thanking them for their support.

According to Philly.com, team President Joe Banner says the Eagles are interested in signing Vick to a long-term deal. He says he’s “very excited about his talent.” Banner talked about the rarity of seeing a player with numerous standout qualities; the talent, mental awareness and drive to win.

We”ll see what happens with the contract and CBA going forward.

Unfortunately, a lot of Philly people are outraged and disgusted that Vick represents them on the field.

Vick hung, electrocuted and drowned dogs for more than five years. That’s a mindset not a mistake. Vick’s message is violence, torture and killing, and he should not be on television.

Sadly, some people in Philadelphia embrace this message by routing for Vick. But Lurie and Goodell know there’s money to be made from the controversy. In essence, rewarding Vick for his years of sadistic behavior.

Vick could make a good living out of the spotlight like everyone else. Then all the controversy would go away and the NFL would be slightly more reputable. Slightly.

Goodell should also fire Roethlisberger. There are too many rotten apples in the NFL.

He says he’s “very excited about his talent.”

The Eagles FO are always excited over every decision they make. Banner will
be on 610AM to discuss Eagles Howie Eskin show. I’m sure Schiller will be salivating over every word.

Walker- I root forthe name on the front, not on the back.

Vick- served his time in prison. While I would have been fine with him being locked up for good, he wasn’t. The man has a right to work again. That’s the american system wehave in place. Right or wrongit is what it is.

Its time to move on. He should be watched and we should never forget what he has done but its time toforgive.

Yeah, Stevo. It is time to move on. What if everyone held grudges? What would this country be like if the American Indian, as a people, held onto grudges or if African Americans held resentments? After all, they were treated even worse than those electrocuted dogs.

big e, get of my nuts. I don’t listen to talk radio, I don’t like Banner, I don’t have any particularly positive feelings toward the Eagles front office, and I NEVER stated that I did. You have it in your twisted head that I’m a huge FO butt kisser but you’ve somehow interpreted that from my challenging some of the criticism of the team.

Let’s see if you can handle this analogy. What if I said

“Garry Cobb is an awful website host/blogger because he doesn’t even post articles about Philly sports that much. He just wants to rake in the money from the adds on his website. He was a frickin football player and he NEVER posts anything about the Eagles or NFL for the love of god!” (NOW, I’M NOT ACTUALLY SAYING ANY OF THAT SO DON’T PRETEND THAT I AM)

BUT if I said that, a VERY reasonable response from you or anyone else would be to rip me for an entirely off base and invalid criticism because it’s far from the truth and far from fair criticism. Now if you did that, by your logic, that means that you blindly love GCobb and want to do sexual favors for him because you ‘drink the coolaid’. But that would be the case, just cause you shot down my (theoretical) BS criticism, that doesn’t mean you love and blindly support the person I criticized.

But somehow, because I take issue with a lot of the Eagles FO haters, you assume that I am all for Joe Banner (or even am him) and the Eagles FO. I’m not, never have been and you can’t produce a single quote from me saying so.

Who cares about what he did to those dogs. Thats a horrible thing to say but it is now the truth. As far as I’m concerned, he has’nt rape no female been charged with sexual assualt. He also has’nt been getting in trouble for road rage, and killing people while driving under the influence. This man lost everything, his money, his fame, endorsements, and almost his career. Two years in prison for killing dogs?! I guarantee if Big Ben was a black QB he would be in prison right now. People get pissed when the race card is played, but it is the truth.

I’m proud to have Mike Vick as our QB and so are the fans. The majority of us are. When he walked into the Sixers game we all went nuts. Did anyone go to the GB playoff game? That place exploded when MV was introduced.

He deserves it, and so does his family.

The past is water under the bridge to me for VIck for a couple of reasons
#1) He has paid the price, and done his time..
#2) More importatntly to me , He has demonstrated the following sinec being an Eagle. Responsibility,Accoutanbility,Maturity and a genuine remorse for his past actions and has also become a complete professional NFL QB in his preparation, his desire to win and his ability to lead this Eagle Team..
#3) As far as I am concerned, Mike Vick has nothing to prove to me, but to go out and be the best Football player he can be and lead the Eagles Team to Victory. He deserves this opportunity and has proven to me that he can not only handle it as a player and as a person, that he actually thrives with
the opportunities… Let’s play ball…

It’s took me quite a while to move beyond his transgressions but, he was tried for the crimes the government elected to try him for, found guilty, served the time our courts said was appropriate then released after paying the mandated price. It’s time to put it in the past. Not because he’s a talented QB but because it seems that he’s doing his best to learn from his mistakes by making himself a better man. What more should anyone ask? What’s the saying? I’m not a religious man but they’re good words for anyone so I’ll take some liberties and generalize… Let he who is without transgressions, cast the first stone…

Vick’s message is confusing and violent. Dog fighting has spiked in Philadelphia since he started playing for the Eagles. The two schools of thought are 1) Vick has brought more awareness to the issue and more people are reporting the fights. 2) Vick’s presence in Philadelphia makes dog fighting OK. Be like Vick – fight your dogs. The truth is probably in the middle. There’s more dog fighting and more people are reporting it.

Ultimately, Vick is a terrible representative of the city. His crimes went way beyond fighting dogs. He bankrolled and participated in an extremely sadistic operation in his back yard for years. The details are extremely disturbing.

To PhillyWalker
I think Philadelphia has had a bad enough image for years with the level of violent crime long before the arrival of M Vick.. I hope you are as passionate about concerned about Gangs activities,Cop Killers, Wife Beaters, Abused Children, Teenage Pregnancies, High School Dropouts, etc,etc as you are about mis-treatment to dogs and animals.

Absolutely, Paulman. All important issues. But this is a Vick response board. And Vick only contributes to Philly’s negative image. I love this town. Why not have a team we can all be proud of? Even my father in his 70’s and a lifelong Eagles fan has stopped watching the Eagles because of Vick. I used to get him Eagles sweats and hats for Christmas. Losing our team over one player is a bummer.

Philly, you and your father are in a minority, and on this board, an overwhelming minority, we are over it, don’t care much or at all, we are interested in what he does on the field, whether Reid will blow it again, and the other myriad of football issues that we waste time on

Paulman, couldnt agree more. Not to create a political discussion, but it was just over 25 years ago when we bombed our own city….remember the outrage with that? Philly doesnt exactly have the best rep over the past century

When Vick was originally released from prison, I said that he deserved to come back to the NFL but I didnt want him on my team. He ended up an Eagle so now I cheer for him the player, but still dont accept or forgive what he did before. I myself own two rescue dogs and love them like my children, but I’m not going to stop cheering for the Eagles b/c they gave a convicted criminal a chance to play again. The judicial system said he served his time and can work again, so if this upsets someone to that point then just cheer for another team.

Hopefully these same people protest tuna fishing, animal testing, dolphin hunting etc. Completely legal and undiscussed practices by our global food and science industries can easily be described as torture and murder as well. But they are for the most part ignored, unlike the Vick scenario which has people blogging and commenting every day.

The city is making a lot of cuts. A sign of the times. And, yes, these are all good points. But I still can’t separate the QB from the owner and operator of the Bad Newz Kennels. Of course other players bug me too. I also like Jakedog’s comment. Go Bears.

philly walker, you can be as mad and upset as you wanna be. Boycott all things Eagles, boycott the NFL, write letters to all the front office, make up little posters and march up and down the sidewalk outside the Linc, email all the NFL sponsors and networks all day everyday, get on every message board and rant and rave and whine. Hold your breath until Vick is cut. Go ahead, get your protest on….do all of it to show how upset you are. Maybe, just maybe, if you do, Jeff Lurie will personally reach out to you and sit down with you and listen to your heartfelt impassioned speech and then he will immediately cut Vick………orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr………you can continue to look like a fool, being completely upset that your rants and pouts hold absolutely no power whatsoever and the only person affected by your being mad…is YOU.

Anyone who stops watching the Eagles because of one player isn’t a real fan. We cheer for the team. Just because you don’t like a player you don’t turn your back on the team. If anything, this team did an admirable thing by provide Vick a way to turn his life around and get on track. To me, that’s more reason to love this organization that wash your hands of them. People can be upset over what they like but Vick owes none of us anything except going out there and playing with 100% of his heart every time he steps on the field. He owes none of us any apologies. Only weak people try to hold something against someone. It was David that said “Lord, it is you and only you that I have sinned against”. As long as God forgives him, that’s all that matter.

Try reading the Word of God before you past judgment on someone else.

even beyond religious tenants, that teach us to forgive, Maslow’s theories of psychological development demonstrate that people who cannot get beyond Vick’s past are themselves psychologically underdeveloped, they can’t properly empathize, are harshly judgmental, and unhappy with themselves, and for them we should feel sorry

Hot damn, a theological and philosophical discussion broke out on a Gcobb Eagles discussion board. Good posts around (even philly_walker) and interesting insights from both sides.
