Eagles Sign Former Bengals Linebacker Rashad Jeanty

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rashad Jeanty to a one-year contract. He was a tremendous cover guy on special teams for the Bengals in 2009, but fractured his fibula on the opening kickoff of the Bengals playoff game against the New York Jets.

He missed the entire 2010 season because of the injury and spent that time rehabilitating.

Jeanty is 27 years old. He stands 6’2″ and weighs 243 pounds. He was an outstanding special teams performer, who made 14 special teams tackles in 2009.

The Central Florida University product played in 53 games with a total of 32 starts, as an outside linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2006-09. During that time he recorded 215 tackles and in 2008, Jeanty posted a career-high 97 tackles as he started 15 regular season games and earned the team’s Ed Block Courage Award from his teammates.

Prior to that he played in the Canadian League.High School in Miami, FL, Jeanty starred at Central Florida, logging 9.5 sacks and 137 tackles in 22 games. He was a college teammate of Eagles CB Asante Samuel.

97 tackles sounds pretty good , makes me wonder why the bengals are letting him go. at that size i imagine the eagles will try to convert him to a rotational d- end.

Let’s get a player we actually need as a difference maker. I’ll wait until real news like Haynesworth or Asomugha is reported.

there’s nothing to see here…..

we see these same kinda of signings every year and absolutely nothing come from them….if one of these kind of signings worked please name one.

again…this is the same ol business of an eagles off season

special teams players are key.
a versitile backup player is key, there is nothing wrong with depth.
its easier to come back from a broken leg than it is a torn acl.
this is a good under-the-radar signing.
and you know our team, we are more fragile and are always getting injured. 97 tackles in a season sounds solid.

I am not sure why anyone is disappointed or surprised..
Joe Banner stated a few times last week that they are happy with the present roster and “will be aggressive in picking up quality depth to fill in some holes”
They are under the belief that the New Coaching Staff will make a dramatic
improvement in players along the DL/LB/Secondary and OL … Time will tell..

On a side notice..
Isn’t it amazing that every year, we see player upon player come in with the reputation of playing great Special Teams, then why don’t the Eagles as a tem play great Special Teams.. LEt’s get some Grade A Starter players first..

I was going to try and hold off on commenting until the draft and/or training camp, but here we go again with the leftovers and I just couldn’t help it. Since I failed miserbly trying to be a “Comedian” , I will now try my hand in “Reporting”
Back to the above story.. The best news about this signing, in my opinion, is that we can officially say goodbye to the OLB Ernie Sims experiment.
I think Gaither will not be pursued by the Eagles either (which again is no loss)

There are such things as sure bets….in case some of you guys making excuses for this organization didn’t know.

There’s players that will actually bring more talent and play on a high level without the question marks.

I’m tired of the “IFS” signings.

Sign Atogwe…he’s better than any safety on our team…..no if.

Sign Asomugha..he’s better than any corner on our team….no if

Sign Haynesworth…..he’s better than any DT on our team…no if…

I could gaive a rat’s behind about another player picked to bolster special teams, that’s what our later round players are for.

Oh, I forgot…our later round players end up being better than our earlier round players.

Anyway….Sign impact players ….they cost more but maybe we can get past the wildcard round with another impact player or two. Until then…there’s nothing to see here.

I remember we signed Takeo Spikes who played lights out and how did we reward him? let him walk away in free agency because we realized he had to be paid like good linebackers.

Has the philosophy shifted? No one acquires more injured players than the Eagles. Now, that we’ve “upgraded” our coaching staff, perhaps Montae Reagor should be given another chance, despite having only one eye.

I got it! Lurie’s probably anticipating losing a few dollars because of a lock-out and is trying to make up the difference. I certainly wouldn’t want him to lose his status as “billionaire.”

Im really starting to belive this team really doesnt have a clue, If they really want to see how its done all they have to do is look across the street, The Phillies could of turned around and said, We almost made it to the finals, all we have to do is pick up a couple nice players to complement what we have, we have 3 aces and thats good enough, but no, they turn around and go above and beyond their payroll and pick up the biggest name on the market, and look at the response, the city is going crazy! The Phillies won this city over,Look across the street and learn how its really done Eagles !

Here are some posts from others:

They knew last season was an uncapped year (spend as much or as little as they wanted). They traded down and spent as little as they could, and they bet that a 5th, 6th or 7th rounder would work out. They got what they paid for!

Also remember, last year the players they released or traded saved them 100 million plus over the length of their contracts. They were the 5th lowest team salary structure at 80.8 million. The Jags were 78.1, Chiefs 74.7, Panthers 73.0 and lastly the Bucs at 59.7.

Don’t worry guys…..according to Banner our Eagles have been just as successful when compared to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the last decade.

By the way The Steelers have won 2 Superbowls with 2 Separate coaches….Question….

Who on this site would choose Reid over Pittsburgh’s coach?

or the Eagles Brass over Steelers Brass?

I would trade the Steelers mentality or our beloved Eagles any day of the week and it’s our luck that the Rooney family own the Steelers instead of our Eagles.

At least they measure success by championships not playoff appearances. Don’t worry guys…We started free agency with a splash.

drummer if you think the Eagles don’t sign big contracts, you are ignoring facts. I’m not even going to list the players, the facts are there, you’re just either ignoring them, or are blinded by your frustration.

And when is the last time that making a big splash in free agency has won a team a Superbowl? Please give me an example, and if that a few more to make it not just a fluke. Otherwise, don’t tell me that you will a superbowl by signing big free agents to huge contracts, because it just isn’t true. I want them to get Asomguah just as much as the next guy, trust me, I really do. But that has nothing to do with them signing an almost no-name LB coming off of an injury in February. They’re not hindered from doing anything big at all by the move, so it really is irrelevant.

AndrewP – wish it was that simple, but it isn’t. Baseball functions entirely differently than the NFL. Salary Cap/lack there of is a big factor. And look at the parody in the NFL v. lack there of in MLB. And seriously, when was the last time the team that made the biggest splash in free agency won the superbowl – never. There is no simple formula for winning a Superbowl. There is for a World Series.

Schiller, The first and only time we made a splash (T.O- KEAERSE) we went to the super bowl, even though we didnt win it the point is, you dont give up on something that works, You do it once and look where it got you, do it a couple times and who knows, you seen where it got you, at least do it a couple more times before you give up on it, it just doesnt make sense to abandon something that got you farther than anything else you tried.

Again, I’d love it if they got some of the big names this year. I’m not against big free agent signings (and I don’t believe the Eagles are either). But I just don’t think it’s comparable to Baseball and/or the formula to win a superbowl. Who were the Packers big free agents? The Steelers the year before? Colts? Andrew, andrew andrew…. really another new dimwit that can’t remember history – twice –

Drummer – who the hell cares if they traded out of the first round – they got Jackson? If they had picked him in the first vice the second would you be writing that stupid comment – and by the way the eagles traded out of the first exactly , matter of fact your comment is so stupid – here ya go – in 2008 we traded out of the first round we got DJax and Laws. Djax is a multiple Pro Bowler guess what else we got – another first rd pick that we traded to Buffalo for Jason Peters – who… magically made the pro bowl his first two years So look at that, Andy Ried took one first round pick and got 2 pro bowlers. The ONLY other time was 2007 when they traded out and took Kolb in the second – with that pick they picked up an additional 3rd round pick (Bradley) and another 5th round pick – who was that Celek (actually two picks in 5th rd the other was a DB named Gaddis). So in 12 years the eagles traded out twice. Just stupid. Wait and see if Kolb gets traded, unlike the uneducated but simplistic masses of Philly, many in the league recognize Kolb as a talented and very capable QB, hell Feeley got a second after starting 3 games.

Back to Andrew –

Before you swoon over Kearse and Owens – yeah got ONE great year, and then Owens destroyed the team the following season. Kearse, really, go take a look back at what that got us. Did he make the pro bowl? Did he lead the league in sacks, was he tough against the run… my opinion, all flash, no substance. Wish they had kept Burgess, but they had paid him a bunch to be hurt..
Flashy FA signings –
OK – How about when Jon Runyan was signed – he was the top FA that year. How about Asante Samuel… he was the top FA that year. And remember TO wasn’t a FA he actually came by trade – remember that whole my agent forgot the paperwork and I hate Ray Lewis thing. By that standard, Jason Peters, a two time Pro Bowler came during that period.

See the whole Kool-Aid thing, Schiller and I don’t drink the Kool Aid, its actually the majority of the simplistic (aka Phillywill, Songs (again, didn’t you go to the Skins with Donavon? and a few other notables) that demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of anything football related, but are smart enough to know the Eagles haven’t won a superbowl. Kind of like a liberal that blames everything on George Bush or the war in Iraq, they really have no understanding.. for example “Gold Standard’ or ‘Best roster in the NFL’. Rational intelligent people understand that as professionals they are/were proud of the team, the organization, the stadium (just voted #5 in NFL) and were pumping positive vibe. Never did they swear they were going to win the SB (only Ryan does that – how’s it working for him) but now you see idiot after idiot still putting that in posts about signing a reserve LB. Intelligent people understand that the ‘big names’ mentioned are not available to sign, and will not be available until some sort of CBA comes out that defines what FA will be.. so – don’t you drink the everything sucks cause we are big whiners that haven’t won a super bowl.

Bottom line, be smart, check your facts (yes, facts do actually matter but there are a few folks here who just ignore them so they can rant). It is perfectly acceptable to be critical, for example, the pass to run ration, or the poor red zone defense, just be smart…

Look, the offseason ain’t gonna get any better till after CBA signed.

navyeaglefan, your missing my whole point, look how crazy it is with the Phillies this year and why? Cause they went out and did what they had to do to get better, This was the same thing and the same atmosphere the year the Eagles picked up T.O and Kearse, Forget who didnt make the pro bowl and what happen after that season, the bottom line is, when the TEAM saw how aggresive the front office was everybody played at a higher level, if you didnt see that then you must be blind, you need IMPACT players on this team asap and not just one, you also need a voice on this team, everybody talks about Matthews on the Packers but it was Woodson who was the leader on that team, who do we got? Sorry but your not gonna find that guy in the draft or the CFL.

andrew P..I understand the point you are trying to make but those impact players are not available right now. Why cant some people comprehend that? The Eagles and any other team just can’t magically sign Asomugha or another stud ASAP..Last time I checked free agency hasn’t started yet. If there is football next year and free agency actually takes place and the only players the eagles acquire are CFL/injury prone average players with all the potential cap space they have then us fans will have a right to be fully outraged. But for people to be completely upset and basically on the verge of selling their season tix because all the Eagles have done so far is sign 2 CFL players as of Feb 20. are just out of grasp with reality and what can actually be done right now.

Andrew P,

Every plays after a higher level after they see how aggressive the FO is, huh?

Tell that to the Redskins who got out and get big names every offseason, only to turn around and flush their season down the toilet.

How about the Giants? They went out and signed some decent names in Bulluck, Grant and Rolle. They failed to make the playoffs.

How about the Bengals? They went and got Owens and Bryant. They had a horrible season.

How about the Dolphins? They got Marshall and Dansby. Didn’t make the playoffs.

Now lets look at the 2 teams that went to the SB.

Packers? Dmitri Nance, Spencer Havner, Evan Moore, Chris Campbell, Howard Green, Matt Wilhelm and Charlie Peprah? They must have been pumped with them big signings.

Steelers? Byron Leftwich, Arnaz Battle, Antwaan Randle El, Eugene Bright, Jeremy Kapinos, Flozell Adams, and Will Allen? Maybe Flozell pumped them up? Then again, their O-line was their weakness all year. Maybe not?

Now, I am not saying that a big signing can’t help, but it doesn’t guarantee anything. There are a couple teams that had success after some big signings, but the only one that didn’t have success before the signings was the Bears.

andrew p
andrew p
February 21, 2011 12:13 am

Pheags88, Im not upset cause they havent signed anybody at this point, I understand they cant but when the time comes they HAVE to make a splash in FA, They have to stop doing things half-ass, Sign a shut down corner but neglect the other side, have 2 pro bowlers on the left side of your O-Line but have guys on the other side that cant stop me n you, Their whole thing is the draft and i agree but these guys have picked just as many misses than hits which is scary, they keep thinking their smarter than everybody else and keep trading for lower picks cause their gonna find these gems, yea, you might find 1 or 2 every now and then but you cant keep banking on that, the majority of those guys are 5th, 6th, and 7th rounders for a reason, you gotta get impact players in those first 2 rounds and i dont think someone like Graham is that kind of player, so what do you do?

Sportsbum, All i can do is go by the year the Eagles picked up T.O.n Kearse and see the affect it had on us that year, You dont pick up Samuel to shut down one side and forget the other side, you dont pick up Peters for one side and not upgrade the other side also, I do believe you build through the draft but you have to get it right more than you miss and with the Eagles it seems like its 50/50, look at all the late round and undrafted players that start and our part of this team, some people will say they have a good eye and its great, i say, wheres all the high draft picks at and why is their just as many late round and undrafted players as high picks?

navyeaglefan
navyeaglefan
February 21, 2011 1:49 am

Andrew – again, CHECK YOUR FACTS. The Eagles weren’t exactly dogs in 2003….

The Eagles did not ‘forget’ the other side, they went out and signed Ellis Hobbs – guess who Ellis Hobbs played alongside of before he came to Philly, guess, a dude named Asante Samuel in New England. The Eagles traded for him and drafted a CB and signed Hansen. The Eagles did try to upgrade the right side,of the O Line, and they went out and signed the other Andrew brother. They moved a second round pick to right tackle. So the plan was to have a big name FA, and former #1 pick, and a #2 pick on th rright side, sorry the Andrews brothers were such a bust. Justice had a pretty good year, the position of right guard is where the problem was. The Eagles had a fairly high yards per carry average (to me an important O Line stat), and this year different from others, the O Line did frequently get first downs on 3rd and 4rth and short. Where the eagles struggled was aginst the blitz and heavy pressure up the middle. The blitz problem frequently was the read and the ability to get the ball to the hot rcvr, the pressure up the middle, guards need to do a better job (and better play calling would help)

As for the draft – how do you know 50/50 is not considered outstanding in terms of draft picks? We go through this every year at drafttime. Go read King from SI and his comments about how Andy Ried and he Patriots basically own this draft. Most Eagle fans are too lazy or don’t care to research other teams and how there draft picks work out for them, so cheat, go read a national magazine like Topps or Lindey’s and all the draft previews when they come out. The National writers, the ones that look at the league on a macro level, rate the Eagles as one of the better draft teams. Look at last years draft class. You got major contributions from multiple rookies. As for the misses – over 30 teams take a shot in the first round – how many of them pay off? Two years ago we got lucky, MAcClin and Peters, last year we got Graham – to me he is still an incomplete. NAte Allen was sweet int h 2nd round. 2008 we got Djax in the second, and Laws showed a little something last year. MCoy was a 2nd round pick. So the whole ‘its relative’ thing comes into play.

As for generating excitement……. Every time I read comments like go for it, and go all out, I think Al Davis and Snyder in Washington… NAme the last flashy go for it free agent signing by the STeelers or Patriots, that is what we ae striving for

Andrew, it’s great you want the best at every spot, stud on the left, stud on the right. You want the best, that’s what we want in fans, and more importantly, our teams.

Then there’s reality. Oh, every team that doesn’t get studs all over their team is negligent! – no, it’s impossible. Who has a stud LT and RT? Tell me. Who has two shut down corners (the Jets? – ok, an exception, but how did that do?).

What you want is great, but barely ever possible. Have a does of reality with your hopes for the team, don’t hold to standards that just aren’t realistic on this earth.

And again, I’m not saying we shouldn’t get Nnamdi – I FULLY WANT THAT AND HOPE THEY DO.

But to suggest that they’re doing it half ass to only have 1 asante etc….that’s just sillly.
