Fan Makes Catch Of The Year And Tiki Unretires

You know how Michael Jordan used to put teams away in the fourth quarter. He would dunk in somebody’s face of drop a fade away jumper with his tongue hanging out. Mitch Davie, a baseball fan who went to check out an Atlanta and Toronto game in Florida, has stepped up into Jordan status.

He was sitting there drinking his beer when Braves second baseman Dan Uggla swung and lost control of his bat. The bat headed toward the stands and everybody froze in fright. Everybody except Brooklyn’s Mitch Davie. He reached out with his right hand and grabbed the flying projectile.

In fact, he didn’t just grab the bat, he grabbed the bat while holding his beer safely in his left hand. It was a thing of beauty and was caught by a photographer. He can always say that one day he was like M.J., Magic, Bird, Brady, Pujols and Halladay. With the money on the line, “He was in the zone”.

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton is participating in the Auburn Pro Day, today in Alabama. He and his teammate Nick Fairley aren’t redoing all the drills they did at the NFL Combine. Fairley will do some drills and of course Newton will be throwing the football.

The talented quarterback will be trying to show the scouts that he can throw the football with much better accuracy than he showed at the Combine in Indy. He should do much better since he’ll be throwing the football to his teammates, who he’s much more familiar with.

I’m hearing that the Carolina Panthers are seriously contemplating taking Newton with the first pick. Ron Rivera and his staff are down there checking out the workout. That’s not the only staff that’s represented. It seems everybody who has any chance of drafting him will be there.

Former Giants running back Tiki Barber is coming out of retirement and returning to the NFL. The Giants had the rights to him, but there’s been a report that they will give up those rights. If the Eagles were able to sign him. do you think they should. I could see him going to the Washington Redskins. Mike Shanahan likes old running backs.

He says his brother Ronde is the reason he’s returning to the game.

“After seeing my brother [Ronde Barber] still have fun at our age, it reignited the fire. I’m really looking forward to the challenge of seeing if I can get back to the level of where I was,” Barber told Foxsports’ Jay Glazer. “I started working out again recently. It kind of shocked myself. I still had a lot of the strength I had before. I’m really looking forward to making a return.”

I don’t believe his brother is the reason he’s coming back at all. Barber is coming back because NBC kicked him to the curb. He’s going through a divorce which is the quickest way to clean out your bank account. Think about it. He loses his job, now he’s going through a divorce. I think Tiki likes hearing people say his name, as well.

Tikki has lost not only his job and money, but his mind as well.

The only ring Tikki Barber will get is ring around the collar.

Actually I think it’s not the worse idea. I mean having two years (or more?) to basically allow his body to recover while he was in his prime probably helped and he’s still pretty young at this point. The break may have done a lot to help him extend his pro career. Personally, I think un-retiring is partly about losing a lot too (marriage, job) but does anyone with more than a quarter of brain believe that Tiki Barber couldn’t get a smokin hot wife and another high level broadcast job if he wanted to go that way? Really?

Every pro athlete would try to play forever if someone would actually pay them to do it. It’s from that fear of getting too old to play and wondering if prime years were squandered that has Tiki Barber re-entering the NFL. I think he’ll be in Tampa Bay…Chicago, Cleveland and Carolina also come to mind. It’ll be somewhere that either has a creative West Coast offensive system that needs a veteran guy and an effective scat back or somewhere that he has personal ties. I’m also pretty sure he’s going to avoid going anywhere that has brutal winters like the plague which would be better for him and the team.

The Eagles won’t sign him because of his age, they’re more likely to re-sign Brian Westbrook (also highly unlikely.) Strategically it wouldn’t make sense, because he would be most effective in the system as a receiving back and the Eagles have that third receiver position log with a couple of players that have thus far, with Michael Vick under center, been ineffective but the coaches like the players. (Avant, Celek, Cooper [has been the most effective])

The calm flying baseball bat catch…with beer in hand was priceless.
