Report: Cardinals Will Pursue Kevin Kolb Immediately When They Can….. But

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic continues to say that the Cardinals will pursue Eagles back up quarterback Kevin Kolb when they able to do so.

*Whenever they are able, the Cardinals will pursue a trade for Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb. Kolb had highs and lows last season, but if you are looking for reasons to be excited about him, check out this highlight video of his game against the Falcons. He completed 23 of 29 for 326 yards and three touchdowns against good defense.

*Most Cardinals employees were on furlough last week and returned to work today. Coaches also have had their salaries cut 30 percent or so. The week off and the pay cut were not surprises. I wrote about it in February.

I’ve said this before and I’m going to say it again that Kevin Kolb isn’t a great fit for the Arizona passing game. Scout.com points this out, but they don’t say specifically what it is that makes Kolb a bad fit for the Cardinals offense.

The Cardinals don’t run the west coast offense, they run a downfield passing game that was developed by former coaches Don Coryell and Ernie Zampese and now used by Mike Martz and Norv Turner.

You need a strong arm to succeed in this type of offense because the offense emphasizes downfield throws. They love throwing the ball downfield on seam routes rather than slants and short curl routes. The quarterback rarely throws the ball short to running backs out of the backfield.

Arm strength is as important in this offense as accuracy. If you’re throwing 20 to 25 yard seam routes, the ball is going to be in the air 30 to 35 yards or more and you had better have some speed on it or there’s a good chance it could get picked off.

The receivers love to have a strong-armed quarterback because the ball won’t be in the air very long and that will give the safeties less time to get the chance to pound the receivers. A weak-armed quarterback will leave the receivers in vulnerable situations.

Getting the ball deep to the wide receivers is one of the main weapons in this offense and that isn’t necessarily Kolb’s strength, but we’ll have to wait and see how it works out, if and when he’s traded to the Cardinals.

Ironically, Donovan McNabb, who works out with the Cardinals receivers on a regular basis would have been a better fit for this type of downfield offense, while Kolb is a better fit for the west coast offense.

I think that the Seahawks are in the running as well…… “We’re gonna score” aka Matt Hasselbeck may not be in Seattle this year and they have the option to go with Kolb and win in a very weak division or let their rival get a young 4 year veteran with less miles and perhaps can prevail in this westcoast offense…… Dont excuse the 49ers as well……. The wild wild west will try to get their John Wayne or a gun that shoots blanks……. Kolb may be the key to the West success……..

Mcnabb will be in Minn…… The Redskins will take a 4th or 5th pick for him and send him on his way…….. They can care less what Mcnabb has to offer for their organization……. Throwing divots at peoples ankles isnt going to cut it………..

I think the CArdinals will pursue Bulger,McNabb, or even V Young and before going after Kolb, plust they can get these otheres for less than what the Eagles are asking in return..
I think the Seahawks will offer a 2nd Rounder in 2012 and a 3rd Rounder in 2013 for Kolb and he would be a great fit for their System which now has a new Offensive Coordinator who came from the Vikings under B Childress and run very similar formations and terminology as the Eagle do so Kolb’s learning curve would be a fast one..
Or Kolb may just end up being an Eagle for 2011 which wouldn’t surprise me at all..

Pman, that wouldnt make sense you know why? bc the seahawks and the cardinals and 49ers want the qb position to be solidified for years to come not just a 1 year rental so kolb is a hot commodity for the teams in need of a qb, bc hes young, has some starts under his belt, and doesnt have much wear n tear on his body. So hes the first option for many of those teams, then the next group of FA Qbs the mcnabbs the youngs etc etc…

ugh- School time for pman again…..

A 2nd in 2012 and a 3rd in 13????

If kolb leaves next year the birds may very well get a good compensation pick…. so that means they basically would give him up for a 2nd rounder NEXT year??? um…. NO. not gunna happen. the cards, 49ers and seahawks all NEEEEEEDDDDDDD a qb and we have 1. There is no way Kolb leaves for anything less than a 1st rounder and a starting type D player (my guess is another so-so DE that the birds will tell us is better than he is).

I agree JonHart…….. They want a future……. With the likes of Alex Smith and Charlie Whitehurst and rookie/1st year Qb John Skelton………. The Cardinals will love to get Kolb…… But I think the better fit will be in Seattle……. With a system that benefits him……. Short routes get the ball out quickly…….. Running game with Lynch……… ETC….

@Stevo…….. I will love for the birds to get a pick and D. Dockett……. Someone who can put pressure and stop the run as well…….. I hate to say it but C. Clemons?????? MAN O MAN O MAN………. Rory Seagrest is the most underachieving coaches that the NFL has to offer…….. Clemons was good with the raiders and was a beast with the Seahawks……. I pretty sure that trade wont happen…….. but I say a 1st rd. pick and a OL will help out…… perhaps Chris Spencer……. and a 1st rounder………

Stevo,
No Way Jose, Teams are not going to give up a 1st Rounder and a Starting Defensive Player for Kolb… (San Francisco is not even interested in pursuing Kolb since they Drafed their QB of the Future in Colin Kaepernick.. Alex Smith with play 1-2 more seasons to bridge the gap with them as Coach Harbaugh gets Kaepernick up to speed)

Weird but true story…… Eagle fans regonize real Eagle Fans…..

Yesterday In Charlotte NC……. I was at this ice cream store called Brusters and I was placing my order…….. This gentlemen with his son and I was with my family as well he had on a Ryan Howard tee shirt with his Phillies Cap and I had on my Phillies Cap as well…….. The first thing we looked at each other and said “INJURIES”!!!!!!!! LOL……. We laughed because this is something that we know and that is the big issue with the Philadelphia Phillies…….. He said also and I quote…… “ANDY REID”! “OMG will he freakin change his philosphy”! “For the LOVE OF ME”……. GOSH!…… And his son is asking him questions he’s still ranting and raving about Andy Reid……. LOL……. He said “Jim Johnson was key”!……. Which is true……. He said that, “I wish that Philly would go back to the bend but dont break system they once had”……… “As much as I hated it we didnt give up as many td’s”……….. I agreed with him and he went on and on and on while his son was asking him, “DAD…….. DAD…… hows your ice cream”! LOL…… It’s just the mental things that us as Philly Fans have to go through from time to time……. I think we both needed that therapy!!!!! LOL

Anyways, If the Eagles were able to trade Kolb during the Draft, they had a good shot at a 1st Round Pick in Return, but now that it has passed, so has the hype and build-up
I don’t see any teams willing to part with a 1st Round Draft Selection for a
QB with 7 Career Starts and with some good games and bad games under his belt with his upside potential never fully developed since he’s now 27 Years old

it is highly unlikely that the eagles get a 1st AND a starter at any position. it might be somewhat unlikely that they get a 1st, but it only takes 1 team to fall in love with the hype. for those mentioning the 49ers, there’s no chance they are interested. Harbaugh likes Alex Smith as a short term solution, and Kaepernick is the future. for the team that trades for Kolb, they are looking at him as their future. so just get the 49ers out of your heads right now, 0 chance that they are interested.

Everyone is talking about a 1st rounder in return for Kolb…what have this organization done to make you believe they can pick an impact player on defense if given a first round pick?

Maybe we’d get another Bunkley, or Patterson, or McDougal, or Brandon Graham.

What is the excitement about getting a pick knowing our team will only pick the guy no one out there thinks we need being smarter than everone else, only to end up with a 4th round talent in return if lucky?

The only way this thing will work would be if we get a player a defensive minded coach already picked with a top 10 pedigree……Patrick Peterson.

Anything else would be a failure because our organization have proven they do not know how to pick top talent for the defensive side of the ball in the first round.

last year the Giants get Jason Pierre-Paul while we get an undersized Graham with Pierce-Paul sitting right there….this year everyone and their mother know we need a corner….This year Prince Amukamara drops within reach and we let the Giants get him and pick up a 27 year old fireman for the offensive line.

So why are we talkng about a 1st rounder in return for Kolb again?

I’ll be excited about a defensive first round pick when we have someone on board who actually can pick top defensive talent and that probably will not happen until Reid is gone. Bring in a Dungy to take over and we’ll finally get over the hump. He actually knows defense.

songs- we dont need a rookie at CB- we need a stud vet. Im glad they took a guard because we badly needed that too. i think FA will happen and we will get a starting CB.

as far as kolb goes- teams NEED a qb. There are not many good qb;s out there to be grabbed. Dmac (whom i supported) has had his stock slip. He’s older and you arent going to build a team around him anymore. Vince young has done nothing to show he’s worth the chance. Kolb is young, relatively cheap and a team player and he’s for sure worth a 1st rounder.

That said- i dont think he will be a star in this league and dont be surprised if he comes back in 3 years as our backup or something BUT- a team would be crazy NOT to take a chance on him and let a DIV rival get him.

Stevo ..I’d give up Kolb and send Bunkley and Patterson to boot for Patrick Peterson.

We have Dixon who is better than both Defensive tackles we picked in the first round and he was a damn undrafted free agent.

Dixon and Laws are young and strong…and if we were to pick up Haynesworth…who would miss those 2 first round interchangeable parts?

Let’s give Arizona the equivalent of “3” (what the Eagles believe) are 1st round talents.
Kolb, Bunkley, and Patterson…for Patrick Peterson

Maybe Arizona will think they got over like bandits with our underacheiving baggage.

Stevo,
What teams need QB’s now
I count the Arizona,Seattle ,Miami & the Redskins as teams who need a Starting QB for the 2011 Season..
Teams like the Panthers,Vikings,Bengals,Titans,Jags,49ers already drafted QB’s to groom for the Future and don’t have the need for a QB like Kolb, maybe some of these teams could use a Veteran QB to bridge a 1 year gap until the Draft picks are ready to assume #1 Spot.
It appears the Browns are very happy with C McCoy’s progress and that the BIlls are happy with R Fitzpatrick’s progress and neither are interested in Kolb..
Besides Kolb, they’re quite a few QB Free-Agents and or QB’s who want/need a fresh Start for another team (McNabb,Young,Palmer,Hassleback,Bulger are the big names)
but there are back-up types likes K Boller,Troy Smith,T Jackson,M Linehart,B Quinn,B Voltek,D Stanton,T Edwards, L McCown,R Grossman,B Gradowski,B Croyle,) and a player I would like to Eagles to pursue if the trade Kolb is Dennis Dixon from the Steelers

I see the Eagles getting a 2nd Rd pick in 2012 Draft and possibly a decent Defensive player but not a stud player (Dockett or Petersen keep dreaming ) Or instead of a player, maybe a 2nd or 3rd Rd Conditional Pick in 2013 based on Kolb’s performance, games played,Stats..etc,etc…

Paulman …I agree….It would not surprise me if Reid rolls Marlin Jackson’s injury proned ass out during the season knowing he’s a risk at a need position.

..And for those who think Reid could not possibly do something as ridiculous as playing an injured player at a key position that should have been addressed in the offseason… just go back to opening night 2010 to view who was number one on the depth chart at Center.

I have become very good at reading between the lines when veiwing the Eagles fluff spin in the off season when it comes to a position of need.

Have you noticed the Eagles are easing Lindley’s name in most of their side pieces when discussing the corner position?

Be ready for our secondary to get torched once again folks and watch the reoccuring story of the Defensive end opposite Cole doing nothing with Cole wearing down as the season ends.

Think Fellas…How many seasons have we heard the same issues only to go into a new season with the same issues.

Unless we can consistently put up 35-40 points a game it’s unrealistic to think we can beat teams that have consistent balanced attacks and defense down the stretch.

We need a philosophical change from the top down.

And unless this organization is willing to do something outside or their constant mediocre philosophy we as fans can not expect a different outcome.

They will never fool me again….doing the same things.

I’ll wait for a change and will believe nothing until they show a willing to change…So I’ll just wait for them to roll out Marlin Jackson after Trevard Lindley is toasted in key games because as a Eagles fan…

This is what we’re accustomed to.

The one thing that will show the Eagles want to win it all would be if they go all out and acquire Nnamdi Asomugha…If not.

We all knows how it ends.

I think since the eagles didn’t trade kolb during the draft, it shows that the eagles want good value for kolb instead of panicing and selling kolb for a crappy pick. This good be good or bad. Remember that the cardinals wanted a first from the eagles for boldin, but ended up selling him for a 4th, so the eagles better hurry and sell him while kolb seems to be in a good mood.

June 1, 2011 11:19 pm

phantastic, you are aware that the Eagles COULD NOT, as in, it was impossible for them to trade Kolb during the draft. Teams were allowed to trade picks for picks, but no players at all, whatsoever. You did know that right? Otherwise, your trying to read into that not happening is silly.

Songs, you sad sad headcase. “This is the life of an Eagles fan” – the exact sentiment that was so ubiquitously accepted but with the word “phillies” in place of “Eagles”. True of false, don’t wuss out of it songs. That’s EXACTLY what people thought/said so long about the Phillies. Songs, you know everything don’t you? You really do. And it amazes me that you think Peterson is tradeable. I honestly think that there is nothing at all that would entice the Cardinals from trading Peterson. First, there’s the NFL rule they’d be breaking, which most likely makes that deal impossible regardless of the two teams’ preferences. Second, there’s the fact that they drafted a guy who was considered a top notch defensive lock. And they’d trade that away for what reason? It just makes 0 sense. So why are you wasting your time thinking about that. Hey, I’d love to get good value for Kolb, and I agree that the best compensation would be a stud D player, as opposed to picks (though picks are traded WAY more frequently than players in the NFL… but I just don’t see it being for a #5 rookie. If anyone thinks Kolb isn’t worth a first rounder, him being worth a top 5 first rounder is way more ridiculous. Use your brain hater, I don’t know if that’s within the realm of possibility because your negativity hazes your thoughts too much… but come on

First off Schill…you Troll!

The Phillies finally decided to hire a GM in Gillick and spend competitively understanding the old philosophy just couldn’t work in todays game with the likes of the Yankees buying up all the good pitching..

If anything the Eagles should look at the Phillies as an example of a team who are now the team of Philadelphia because they listened and changed their stubborn losing ways.

Our problem is the Eagles are too proud to do what the Phillies did and concede their flawed philosophy.

another thing “Troll”

Get the Memo.

The commissioner stated that teams could make trades if the talks were during the time the ban was lifted…That’s draft day you knumbskull..So if they agreed to pick Peterson for the Eagles in exchange for Kolb, they could seal the deal once the lockout is lifted…Go back a few articles..”Gcobb” did the story simpleton.

However, we do agree….Kolb is not really worth a first rounder. He wasn’t when we drafted him and definately is not now…but there’s a sucker born everyday..Arizona might be that sucker…read the other comments I made loser.

We need a player “all ready” because we can not trust this organization to do the right thing on the defensive side of the ball if they did get a first rounder for the “ham ripper”.

Now take your troll ass back into Banners office and lick his boots while he run his nerd pencil down your pathetic spine.

songs, you are correct about how the Phillies turned it around. That’s how it’s done in baseball. But lets see, that formula in football, yeah I guess that applies (and yes, we sure do sound like a broken record collectively, this argument is so so so repetitive repetitive, but still gotta say it)…. let’s see, the Packers won the SB last year because of all they’re huge spending in free agency and huge contracts to their good players… yep… that’s true because there are a bunch of examples… you know like _____ and ____ and, oopps almost forgot the big obvious one…. ______! And that’s the trend, in fact the rule in the NFL, the SB is won by signing big FAs, and spending big dollars across the board like the examples of _____, _____, _____, ____ , ____ and oh yes, the ____ ____s.

Look songs, we all know that you popper here out of nowhere to express your severe despair when McNabb was traded. It’s honorable that you loved that guy so much, he was a very very very good player, role model (somewhat) and person for the Eagles for so so long. But then he left and you declared yourself a Redskins fan. That’s cool man, and I guess it makes sense that you want the Eagles to follow in their lead of spending a lot. Problem is, that has nothing to do with success, winning football games, playoff games and a SB.

See, you can call middle school names and ‘owned you’ all the time you want, but you are again, flashy in your use of buzz words, but wrong in your content. Neither of us are trolls, we just aren’t. We disagree all the time, but neither of us are trolls. (though I’d argue that Paul and Big E often behave like that, but not by any means all the time). The definition of ‘troll’ (appropriate for this context), via wikipedia (because that’s the most reliable source for how social/internet stuff is generally accepted these days)…

“In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory[citation needed], extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[3] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: “That was an excellent troll you posted”. While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context. For example, mass media uses troll to describe “a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families.”[4][5]”

We’re talking on topic, about football, the Eagles. etc…. we certainly disagree, and get emotional, but we’re both on topic, you pretty much always are here Songs. So am I. Big E, with his obsession with calling Reid fat and being only negative and emotional, that’s kinda like a troll, but not really because he’s still in the context of the Eagles (It’s just focused reaction to one specific aspect of the context).

But again, delight in your ‘owning’ and name calling all you want, but I’m a content guy myself. And your content is counterproductive to your argument because it doesn’t support the team winning, just spending.

ha, ‘popper’ was meant to be ‘poppeD’….

Oh, and in my examples, I neglected to mention “______”, my bad, of all the examples, it’s probably the most obvious one. Though you could argue that in the scope of NFL big spenders winning the SB, “_____” was slightly more exemplary than “______” (toss up)…

Seriously, anyone got a team name to fill in those blanks? Anyone? Sure, you can find a team that one a SB that had signed a FA or two, but I’m talking about the MLB thing that Songs is talking about, just going and spending a boatload of money to make your team championship ready…. (hey I want them to sign Nnamdi and would admittedly be a bit giddy if they signed Hayensworth too… but you can’t pretend like NFL doesn’t have a cap and championships are won by GM spending)…

Whining & bitching is a way for alot of people to vent about the idiots that run our teams. DD – That’s all fine and good, and by all means, keep venting if it does indeed help you. But when it goes from venting to conversation – as in back and forth discussion with a moderate goal of making sense (and maybe the fine line/blurry boundaries between the two – venting and conversation/debate – are what cuases a lot of controversy around here, or at least with me a lot…), when it goes from venting to conversation, I argue that there’s got to be a sense of perspective/reasonability to it.

For example, list the all time best coaches in any sport – Philly or otherwise. Lombardi, whoever… (I’m admitedly too young to know much coaching history and hate too many of the successful ones – see Phil Jackson, Bill Belicheat…etc) to list them myself. But tell me if you honestly think any of them would say that a head coach should listen to his fan base. Should give in to his ways because the fans call him stubborn… ha, I bet you everything in the world that Don Shula, Vince Lombardi, Newt Rockne (Sp?)… etc… were all considered stubborn men. I know Bill Bellicheat is. Yet many Philly fans, expect different of our coaches. The same fans hated Manuel until the Phils won it…

Reid left that game determined to get T.O. … this was a HUGEEEEEEEE breakthrough in his thinking. I honestly believe that he has had a similar come to jesus moment…. think about it….. the worst red zone D in the last 4,000 years. Look at what he has done in the wake….. 1. Fired the D cord…. 2. Brought in outside help to work with both lines.

You have to also remember that the CB position is one of their highest priorities…. i dont think the RCB is on our roster as of now.

I do agree a little with Steveo about COAch AR having more of a sense of Urgency.. I think he and his new asselbled Staff has 2 years to make it happen so I think many of the predictable actions made by him may be out the window for I really do think he wants to win now.. The Problem being is that GM Roseman/Banner may not be so quick to pull the trigger as far as signing players for big bucks and especially in a shortened camp this season where a veterean player (from anyother system) may not make a quick ajustment to the Eagles System to make a full impact..
I still think they will stay away from older players in Free-agency (30 Years +) and I also think they will start staying away from players with a history of a recent injury (like a Marlin Jackson, C Ingram) and go with players who are healthy
I aslo think (Schiller alluded to earlier) that Coach H Mudd and Washburn are coaching to win now also, These are veteran Coaches with great reputations,etc,etc.. They are not simply going to come to Philly and go throw the motions to collect a Paycheck until they Retired. Both Coaches are a little bitter about how their jobs cames to an end with the Colts & Titans repsectfully and would love nothing else to to go out and win a Championship with Coach AR and the Eagles.. The CB and DE positions are critical for the Eagles to be able to compete in 2011, If they do nothing, then this team is building for 2012 Season, If the Eagles and are agressive and land a proven/top CB/DE iun Free-agency, then they may have a shot..

The longer this lockout continues, the less likely the Eagles (and other teams) will go all in, to win it in 2011, With the shortented Camps, little to no OTA, possible missed games and whatever else, who knows. I think many Teams are already planning to bag the 2011 with any Big Payroll additions or expensive veteran Free-Agents signings since teams won’t really get a full years worth on them for this season most likley.. Most teams will plan on playing, using, seeing many of their young players this year as teams prepare for future seasons 2012 & beyond..
I don’t think the Eagles will be afraid to spend $$, I just don’t think they want to spend $15-$20 Million per year for a player who may only play 12-14 games, have little or no camp and basically not a productive 1st Season with the Club.. I think most teams will feel the same way unless something gets settled vevy quickly..
