Michael Vick Has Been Shining At Camp, While Beginning New Contract Talks

I must admit I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen so far of Michael Vick at training camp. Last year he got off to a sizzling start during the season and was on his way to an NFL MVP award, but he and the offense were slowed down at the end of the season by constant blitzing of opposing defenses.

A year ago, Vick hadn’t been able to check out of plays at the line of scrimmage vs. blitzes. He had struggled to read the blitz, hesitated in making decision at the line of scrimmage and been unable to get the ball out his hands versus blitzes.

So far at training camp, Vick has done an outstanding job of recognizing the blitz and getting the ball out of his hands. He’s pointed out the blitzer, then made adjustments with the blocking plan and executed the play.

I must give Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg credit for starting the training camp with Vick facing the blitz. They know what they’re going to see from defenses, so it’s been the focus of the practices.

On the first play of the Eagles team drill on Friday morning practice, Vick read the blitz, changed the play at the line of scrimmage and threw a bullet to Jason Avant on an end route to beat Joselio Hanson.

His throws have been very accurate throughout the camp and he’s shown a great touch on his throws. His passes have been on the money with their accuracy while the quarterback has been working without his best two receivers, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

To give you idea of how Vick’s teammates measure him up, check out how Brent Celek described Vick’s play so far this training camp to Reuben Frank of Comcast Sportsnet.:

“He’s picking up everything. The throws he’s having are on point every single time. “I can’t say enough good things about him. He’s really impressed me. He’s even becoming a bigger leader on this team. “Mike wants to be the best quarterback in the league. He’s just keeping his nose down. He’s grinding, working hard. “He wants us to be the best. And you can see it out there. He expects it from the guys, he expects it from himself, “When you’ve got a guy like that – I mean, don’t get me wrong, we’re all going to give it our all, but when you got a guy like that that’s giving it all on every single play, you don’t want to let him down.”

Now we find out that Vick and the Eagles have begun discussions to extend his contract.

“There already has been some discussions to be honest and candid with you,” said Vick. “I’m just hoping that it all works out. I want to be here. I want to play for Andy [Reid] throughout the rest of my career. And we’ll just see how it goes.”

I can understand the Birds deciding to extend Vick’s contract because of the way he’s been performing during training camp and the fact that an extension would open up more salary cap room.

Gary who has been the most impressive on the offensive line?

Good question Chini…

I really see Vick goin to the next tier this year, hes going to use his legs as his secondary weapon all year. Think about if he does master these blitzing schemes in season. He’ll be able to get chunks of yards with no contact on the regular.

Marty’s made the comparison to Young and i think this year we’ll see it more. There backfield is twice as talented with a healthy Ronnie and Shmidt knowing he’s the starter.Vick has too look at these skill guys and just know he scores when he needs to this year.

Who’s the scat back this year..jitterbug?

Rumor has it all around the best player in camp and possibly on this team may be McCoy. I think this kid is gonna be a stud.

I’d also like to see an article on how the o-line is looking. They were a mess last year and something that I feel is being overlooked this year with all the free agency moves on defense and a couple skill positions on offense. If the o-line is any resemblance of what they were last year, we are going to have problems and Vick is going to get knocked around all year.

I heard S Moss, Chad Hall, Marlin Jackson, Moises Fokou & Darryl Tapp are looking real good too but I have to admit, my sources have been a little spotty lately..

The guys who are shinning in camp are Vick, Mccoy and casey matthews… Casey will be a star in this league and may even get rookie of the year… Another guy on my list is cullen jenkins… i hope he can stay healthy, hes struggled in the past with durability issues so lets hope he can stay healthy for us… But casey matthews will be the one i have my eye on going into the season…. Too many new parts and starter to go 19-0 this Season..
2-3 new players along the OL at C,RG and RT will take a little time to get and
and at least 4-5 new players/starters on Defense as well as a Rookie Punter and Kicker.. Plus the Wildcard is Coach AR, does he change the Offensive Philosophy a little and hav ea more balanced approach, there will be some new OL, anddoes he utilize the addition of tough RB in Ronnie Brown down in the Red-Zone more or still relay of QB keeps or gadget plays for Chad Hall… Also there may be an issue at WR to start the Season with Maclin’s illness and D-JAx’s holdout so they may start the season running the ball more which wouldn’t be a bad idea at all the get to OL in sync.

Fran, EVERYONE! Where have you been??? From the coach down to the fans have been praising the guy… thats our starting MLB… why do you think the birds havent gone out and signed a LB? There set at LB thats why… Casey Matthews has taken over in camp

Most reports have stated that Matthews has looked inpressive a ttimes but still has a ways to go, but has a real natural feel for the game and the Defensive schemes they are putting in. I am not sure anyone is ready to annoint him as Defensive ROY outside of JH, who is a big Matthews fan …

Paul, I called it months ago did i not? I said this kid is gonna be special, You said hed be a special teamer and practice squad guy ahahahaha noway he ll definitely be a better pro than college player just like his brother… Paul dont say you dont remember any of this… lol

paulman

I remember it very well, one thing I do have Jon is an excellent memory.
I said he would be a special-teamer and a back-up LB his 1st couple of seasons and I will reserve judgement until I see him play some games.. Please remember 1 thing, being a starter at LB for the Eagles does not translate to me that your very good or an elite LB, Matthews may very well be the best LB on this current Roster, but that still doesn’t mean he is on par with other Starting LB’s in the NFL.
As a good example let’s look at some of the Starting LB the Eagles have had the last few seasons and tell me outside of Stewart Bradley, which of these others are truly a good NFL LB who is starting material or considered Pro-Bowl material.. How about Omar Gaither, Joe Mays, C Gocong, E Sims, W Witherspoon, T Adams, A Jordan, M Fokou, and now even J Chaney
Don’t get me wrong, I like the kid and his family heritage and tradition goes without saying, but just because he’s a Starter in August on the Eagles team which has has a revolving door and one of the weakest LB corps over the last 5 Years, is not going to make me stand up and say, yes, he’s the man, he’s a legitimate starter and potential Pro-Bowl player.. I hope he is for this is the one area the Eagles haven’t really upgraded if you ask me

Jon Hart
Jon Hart
August 8, 2011 8:45 am

Paul, the birds had there opportunity to go out and sign or trade for a elite or veteran LB and they may still do it depending on how the LB crew looks in particular Casey Matthews. Remember Juan C was a LB himself and knows how the position is supposed to be played… They love casey and the way he plays and so do his teammates… i understand its early, but you gotta recognize the talent that was drafted this year and last yr, out of the LBs they drafted they have 2 starting LBs come from it, chaney and matthews… Those guys you mentioned are in the past, they have a totally different scheme that they have installed… We can agree too that the talent at that position is totally different too, they have smart, athletic LBs that can cover very well… Tell me this, how many dominant LBs do we have in the NFC? P willis, urlacher, clay matthews III, beason… anyone else? willis and beason play for losing teams, urlacher and the bears have just started making the playoffs again… and of course clay just won the title… Question is do you really need great great LBs to win a SB and the answer is an obvious no… We may be young at that position and inexperienced but if these guys know the system and make plays then why hold them back because theyre young or arent one of the elites at this point in there careers? Cmon man… And also some of the guys that you mentioned witherspoon gocong sims and others have started on other teams and been starters for awhile now…

I know you wasnt expecting Casey to come out guns blazing like this, many people didnt, BUT I did… Not because of his family name, its because he has all the intangibles and as we go along you ll see what i seen too…

I beg to differ Jon,
Look at the last few Super Bowl particpants…
The Steelers,Packers, even the Bears,Seahawks and Cardinals a couple years back had excellent LB Corps.. Look at the Jets & Ravens who have been close the last few seasons in the AFC all have strong LB Corps

I am not saying Matthews is not ready for prime time or that he won’t be a very good player, all I am saying is going by recent Eagle History at the LB Position, because he is being named a Starter at LB does not mean you are a top level LB.. and with the medicore LB Corps over the recent years, many mediocre players became starters (like the ones I listed above) due to the lack of overall talent at the Position..So let’s see him play for a while before jumping to conclusions, we have heard this before every season at the LB poisiton..

LB’s in the NFC you overlooked..
Packers – Bishop, Barnett (before he was injured)
Bears – Briggs
Vikings – Greenaway, Leber
Saints – Vilma
Seahawks – L Tatupu

Sources tell me that the Eagles were real close to signing to S Tulloch who took a good 48 hours to make his decision and decided on bigger $$$ and to reunite with his former DC Schwartz of the Titans who is now HC of the Lions and really lobbied to get him..

Don’t forget the Cardinals had All-Pro LB Carlos Dansby a couple years back when they beat the Eagles in the NFC Championship and almost beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl

I haven’t heard anything in regards to Matthews, good or bad. That would be great if the kid turns out to be a player.

As for Phillip Hunt, has anyone heard anyhting definitive about this guy? I was really hoping he could be this year’s version of Cameron Wake.

August 8, 2011 10:31 am

Paul, but my point was already made lol… you said he would be a special teamer and a back up player and hes our starting MLB and doesnt look to be giving that up any time soon, they love him… and the matthews have staying power anyway… But obviously there is a reason why they didnt bring back bradley or gaither or sims… Our LB crew wasnt the best when we went you the SB or when we played the cardinals in the nfc champ game… And the LBs you mentioned arent elite theyre probably just as good as our LBs honestly…

Not changing anything JH/JAke
If the EAgles went out and signed a proven vetrean LB like many expected them to do (myself included) or evem resigned S Bradley (like many expected, though I did not see Bradley returning myself) then Matthews would be a Special Teams/Back-up.. C’mon Guys..

Paul! Before any of this happen i said he would be a starter, you called him a special teamer n back up… They didnt want to bring back any of there free agent LBs except “Special teamer” Akeem Jordan lol… Just admit you misjudged the kid and hes opened everyones eyes including yours, And that you were so wrong its not even funny…

I stated back in January when the Eagles signed him that he was built a lot like Trent Cole and with good solid lower body strength and a quick first step before you were even posting on here. I also stated that he could develop into a situational opass-rush player and that by working with Washburn would be very helpful to him and qquite possibly the team.. Then you should remember my cautious optimism for the Eagles picking up DE Hunt then.. and so what, I like to thorw out some craxy trade alerts once in a while for a little.. My Free-Agency and Draft lists were very good and I would have been happy if they picked up some of the players I liked (S Tulloch,B Mebane, C Rogers, A Hightower and Plex Buress) .. but I do like the players the Eagle send up with much better but didn;t think they could pull it off in getting Asmo,Jenkins, R Brown and Y Voung I was real surprised and elated that they selected..
I did call TE Donald Lee signing so I was right about 1 pick-up… ha ha

August 8, 2011 7:10 pm

Also my “Dream Drafts” the last few Seasons have not been too bad… Everyone see players potential and fits with a particualr team differently.. and that’s the fun of having and debating the Mock Drafts..
The only difference between you and me JH is that I can admit when I am wrong or over the line or miss something completely and I can also give kudos to when posters whio bring up good points even though I may disagree with that poster on another subject matter on other articles.. …We are all big time Eagle fans or we wouldn’t be here..So let’s all enjoy this years team for it’s gonig to be fun to watch them grow together as a team..

I am happy that the Phils exceeded my expectations, they have battled a ton of injuries from the get go and are playing some great ball and have been very consistent all season long no matter whose been in/out of the lineup..I was wrong about their mental toughness and Charlies handling of the Bullpen which I thought would be a real weakness on this club and now has shown to be a real strength, I am glad they have proven me wrong.. Now hopefully they can continue to play meaningful games for the rest of the Season to keep their edge as the playoffs approach..
