Despite All The Additions This Training Camp Was All About Michael Vick

Amazingly despite all of the acquisitions to the roster, the best thing about this preseason has been the play and leadership of Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

Head Coach Andy Reid was asked one question about Vick’s training camp performance yesterday and he started talking and kept talking and talking. I told you before that Vick has looked like another quarterback in camp because of the way he’s thrown the ball with tremendous accuracy and the way he has dealt with the blitz.

“He’s doing an excellent job”, Reid said. “He’s really upped that part of his game. Last year he was thrown in there without a lot of reps here at Lehigh, with [QB] Kevin [Kolb] taking most of the reps, and all of the reps with the ones…. I think he’s putting pressure on himself to be a better football player”.

Looking at Vick scan the defense before the play and quickly identify the blitzer then change the blitz pickup, I couldn’t help but believe that he has spent a lot of time during this off season learning from his mistakes of a year ago. In many way it’s hard to believe that he’s the same guy.

“Michael made a huge jump last year,” said offensive coordinator Mornhinweg. “He’s always been one of the great dynamic players in the game, but he made a big jump last year. There’s one more step he needs to take, one more step, and that part that you mentioned with the blitz recognition is part of that step.”

Vick appreciates the fact that he’s getting most of the reps this training camp.

“You start getting comfortable as time goes on with everything that you’re doing,” said Vick. “I’m just trying to get to a level where I can just go out there and react and not have to think about what I’m doing, where it comes naturally. And we’re getting to that point.”

Reid and Mornhinweg have put more time into getting Vick ready to recognize the blitz and make the proper adjustments, than anything else this training camp. Remember that the vulnerability to the blitz was the only thing that slowed down the offense last season, but it stopped the explosive offense in a major way. That won’t be the case this time around. Vick and the offense are ready for teams to try to blitz them.

Vick has also taken his leadership to another level. No longer does he just play and have the guys play along with him. Now I hear him saying things to the wide receivers and the offensive line when the quality of play drops.

“I think he’s putting pressure on the guys around him to be a better football player and at the same time rallying them to try to bring out the best in them”, Reid said.

He’s developing more of a touch on his short throws. His fundamental technique of having his feet balanced with a slight bend of his knees when he throws the ball, has become something that he doesn’t have to think about. The verbiage which Vince Young has struggled with at times, is something that Vick doesn’t even have to think about any more.

He quickly gets the offensive unit in and out of the huddle with ease and confidence. Yes, confidence is much higher with Vick. He thinks he’s going to make the play and the rest of the offense thinks he’s going to make the play.

Mornhinweg says he’s got a few additional things for Vick to work on when they get back at the Nova Care Complex.

“There’s several other things, I’m not going to get into too many details, that are involved with taking that last step to become, possibly, one of the great, great quarterbacks in the game”, Mornhinweg said.

There’s a lot on the line and Vick knows where he must take this team in order for the season to be successful. I think he’s ready to go.

In one of Vick’s press conferences, he was asked about what he has worked on what he has improved on…He immediately said blitz recognition, said a few lines after that then ended it with “teams won’t be able to blitz me like they used to I can promise you that!” …Confident cat, with major swag, the best man for the job of leading our squad…

part of the problem with the blitz last year was the game plan. Reid has to run the ball more, especially in cold weather, playoff games, otherwise, Vick will be running again, same result, and this camp is not about Vick, its about Washburn

this year will be about play calling. The eagles could spread 4 wr’s out and keep shady back with vick in a shot gun. With the speed we have, there is NO WAY they can cover everyone. Mix in the run and shovel (or is it shuffle) passes and i dont see how we can be stopped. They should be studying Colt offenses from several years back. Let Vick read the D from the line and make the playcall from there. We should see lots of screens this year.

To Jake and others,
I do agree that a more balanced Offensive game plan would minimize VIck’s exposure, but no matter what the play, the formation or game situation, The QB of any team must recognize what the Defense is attempting to do and then react to it accordingly. This is what separates the Average QB’s to Good QB’s to Great QB’s and when VIck’s gets this part down, which I expect he will, he will defintely be an elite QB ..

Alrighty Jon. I hear you. Loud and clear. But you are working too many emotions into your argument. You’re taking leaps. YES they are working on it – and by they I mean the whole package – Vick, Reid, Morningweig, Peterson, Mudd…. etc. etc. etc. etc. You know what? Shaq put a whole shit load of work into free throw shooting….and…

I know just as well as you that Vick is an AMAZING athelete. He has also proven that he’s mature and hardworking now.

But you are still jumping to a conclusion (and I’m assuming its out of ‘heart’/passion/hope, all good things – bravo -) but to say that because they have been working on it means Vick is ‘ready’ is just silly.

vick is on the borderline of elite qb because he is a dynamic player in general.
if he keeps his completion percentage up there and the picks low, he’ll be elite.
he is already an elite football player, i’m looking forward to a 2-min drill with him.
michael vick will be the league mvp and the superbowl mvp i cant wait for it to come to fruition!!

ill say he’s ready- and here is y….
1) Focus- the man spent 2 years with 1 focus outside of family- get back into the NFL. This offseason he had 1 focus- read the blitz. Look how far the eagles got last year with a bad D and little reps in camp for vick. I just dont see how this hasnt been fixed.

2) Built a D! Im not excited about the LB core. Im really not. BUT- this D can win games. The front 4- the amazingly deep CB’s. They are loaded. Last year we were saying….. if Graham and Allen play well we will be ok. Thats over now. This D is loaded. Talent EVERYWHERE.

3) better coaches all around. Washburn! nuff said.

all of this takes pressure off vick. He does NOT have to play as good as last year. There are better coaches and players all around him now. PLUS- no kevin kolb breathing down his neck.

I think i wrote extensively on blitz recognition and how Vick handles the blitz last season during the playoffs, but got screamed down as a racist hater who was questioning Vick’s intelligence. The actual fact of the matter was I was discussing the learning curve that qbs go through in the NFL. First, they must prove they can beat a team from the pocket. He did that last season. Next off they must continue to elevate their mental game to where the blitz no longer causes them to pull the ball down ad run, or throw inaccurate passes to receivers (yes, looking at you Mr. McNabb). Dealing with the blitz pickup is the last step a qb takes to get to the elite level, and I think Vick should do that this season, he will have a chance to prove it early on against the rams and Spags. It appears they have been spending significant periods of time working to make the Oline, backs and qb get on the same page. I hope it works.

It sounds like this season could be the one. If we get a right tackle who can really play.

I also have to agree with JakeDog. I don’t care how much talent you have, when it gets cold Vicks performance has always dropped. He played in a dome in Atlanta and played HS and College ball in the south where it rarely snows.

Play-off coaches leave no stone unturned and can shut down one dimentional Andy.

Before they beat the Eagles last year I went to Chicago’s web site. They said that the Eagles had the fastest WRs pop-em and kick the Eagles tail. They did.

The Eagles will never be a smash mouth football team under Andy but Green Bay showed that if that’s what it takes to win, then they’ll run the ball.

And they have Aaron Rogers in his prime.

To AS,
I do recall your analysis last year and were dead on with it. I also remember you being labled a hater by the usual posters who are on Vick nuts and can never admit a bad play, call, decision by him …
It’s kinds of funny, When the Eagles win, it’s because of Vick/D-Jax and when the Eagles lose, It’s because of HC A Reid or his Assistant Coaches
Anyone ever notice this…

Thanks Pman. I always try to come back to the most basic level in athletics. Players win and lose the games, coaches are a factor, but not nearly as much as is talent. Last night Charlie went with his reigning CY winner and is getting roasted for it today. But if big Roy makes one or two more good pitches, ol’ Chuck is a genius today. A couple of years ago in Chicago, if Buck runs to the correct gap, or Celek makes his block, Andy is a tough, stick-the-ball-in-the endzone guy who was showing confidence in his Oline. Instead, the players don’t do their assignments, and Andy is a dope for calling the wrong play.

C;mon Paulman, that is as generic as it gets…Every team goes through exactly what you stated not just the Eagles! In my opinion you play the game as a team and win/lose as a team…
You ever notice the same kind of thing happens with Brady, Manning, Brees, top QB’s in the league (getting all of the credit) if they can get credit why can’t Vick….just so happens QB normally gets most of the credit, that is fact! In every major sport baseball, basketball, football, if the team doesn’t perform the coach is always the one that is fired or on the hot seat in most cases, unfortunately thats just how it is!
Most of you cats on here have a big complaint with how much AR doesn’t run the ball and have talked about him being let go repeatedly…Theres been tons of times I’ve come on here and seen people complain over and over again about coach AR philosophy…and I believe you were one of them!

And honestly Vick having to improve on blitz recognition was stating the obvious…obviously that was the one thing that Vick struggled with the most…

Also, you guys realize theres a difference this year in how AR will let Vick handle the blitz….Last year it was more of the centers job to call for the adjustment….That responsibility is now Vicks!

C’mon Real Tallk 777,
I am not talking about all the other Teams, I am talking about the Eagles,
When they lose, It’s always the play-calling, the coach’s fault and rarely is it ever on the players.. I don’t hear this in New York, Chicago,Dallas or other NFL Cities.. I’m keeping it Real like you asked me too..

Paulman, I think if you went on a NY, Chicago, Dallas site after a win or loss, you’d hear similar things…I dont think its only here in Philly…I do see where you are coming from, the team should all get the credit or the blame…unfortunately thats not how it is…in every sport its like that, if your a superstar you will probably get the credit for a win…no its not right, football is the truest team sport, we win together we lost together has to be the attitude…Even though fans/media may give credit or dish out blame, I’m pretty sure Vick shares the credit and takes the blame…Thats whats important

I agree that Vick shares all the credit and is not afraid to even step up and take blame even when it’s his teammates that didn’t produce .. I know HC Couglin catches a lot of heat, but so has their choking Defense and QB Eli Manning and RB B Jacobs recently. In Chicago, it’s Jay Cutler’s fault every game they lose even theough their OL has been pitiful for about 3 Seasons now.. . Eagles have a pretty good mix of youth and epxerience and all want topla for Vick, If he can channel that enery for everyone to d otheir part, this could be a Special Season in Philly.. I know we are all counting and excited to see how it unfoldds.. Players love th enew assistants, wnat to win for Coach AR and want to win for Vick
