Juan Castillo Defends Matthews And His Young Linebackers

Eagles new defensive coordinator, Juan Castillo, faced the media yesterday and he knew he was going to receive quite a few questions about the struggles of rookie middle linebacker Casey Matthews and the Eagles other young linebackers.

Castillo came out talking about patience. He believes that he and the Birds coaching staff will have the time to develop the young linebackers for the second half of the season.

“The linebackers will be ready to win the Super Bowl,” said Castillo.

“Remember, it takes 16 weeks, and then really [it comes down to] whoever is playing the best during the playoffs. When you look at it, there is time to develop. You can say that there’s not, but the key is, fundamentally who is the best come Week 8, 9 10, during that crunch time. Over the years, we’ve been pretty good during that time, and we’ll continue to do that.”

Concerning Matthews specifically, Castillo stressed the fact that he’s only played three quarters of football, so far.
“Well you know what; he only had seven plays the first game………… it’s his first time being a middle linebacker. He’s going to get better, and better, and better. Every day he’ll get better.”

Castillo is looking at Matthews performance in a positive way.

“What we saw in Casey is that as the game went on and he felt more comfortable he started doing a better job with that. It was something that continued”, Castillo said. “We’ll work on that every day, over, and over, and over”.

According to the defensive coordinator, Matthews was where he was supposed to be most of the time and that the ball broke into gaps which were supposed to be manned by somebody else.

Sometimes….. when you’re looking at a game and you think ‘well it’s this guy’s fault,’ you know, sometimes, unless you understand what’s going on, well this guy it wasn’t his gap, the defensive coordinator contended”.

I must admit that I don’t understand why the Eagles moved Jamar Chaney out of the middle linebacker position. Castillo refused to answer the question of whether he considers Chaney an insurance policy at middle linebacker if Matthews can’t cut it.

“Jamar is playing a position that’s special”, Castillo responded. “That SAM linebacker, I don’t know if you noticed that, that’s a special position for us. It’s almost a hybrid. He’s got to be able to run, but yet, he’s got to be able to come in there and take on that C gap. That’s a pretty important position to us. He’s a pretty good player, playing a position that’s very important for us.”

The other defense the first year defensive coordinator had for Matthews was that he was utilizing a different technique to deal with opposing offensive linemen.

“What we’re trying to do, is we’re trying to be a team that the linebackers use their hands…….”, Castillo explained. “It has to become muscle memory. It has to be something that you work over, and over, and over. Then it will become muscle memory and the linebackers will be one of the best groups in the NFL, fundamentally.”

JUST LIKE I THOUGHT. It wasnt all Casey and from the sounds of it it wasnt Caseys fault at all. Like i said and so did Ray Didinger is that he was in position on almost every play, he was there doing his job… You other on and off fans/Negadelphians need to take a chill pill. Paul especially YOU. Youve led the early charge. Give it a rest already. Theyre sticking with Matthews and they should because hes going to be a really really good player. The LB crew said too that you cant expect Mattews to come in and be a probowler day one without gametime experience and as a ROOKIE. Thats just crazy. Gimme a break. Guys cut the negativity (Negadelphians). Give Matthews a chance my goodness. And no i dont think the browns game is do or die for him. There gonna go with him all the way…

I didnt expect to hear much on this post from the Negadelphians. You guys wasted so many typing muscles speaking against Matthews when it wasnt even his fault at all… what fools. Try to stay on the bandwagon at least until the season starts sheesh, you guys are jumping ship already… Paul questioning the QB position trying to stir up controversy, guys talking about Matthews when hes doing a good job in there yet you guys were blaming him… Its really pathetic, try to stay a fan long enough to see the regular season start and they play at least 1 game… good grief…

All this is talk…and just more talk…If Casey was where he was supposed to be, then make the play! Its that simple! yes its not all on Casey, and after the Steelers games we seen more issues than just the rookies play…Why should Matthews be allowed the chance over a Clayton, Rolle etc….With all due respect I’m really starting not to feel Juan Castillow all that much, the more and more he talks, I find myself saying “What” way too often….

This Defense will all be learning on the Job from Castillo and the other new Coaches down to all the players and especially the LB’s and Safeties.. Even with all the veteran players brought in, it’s going to take a while (2-3 months) for them to really learn the system, learn playing with each other, etc, etc…
Anyone expecting this Defense to play at a high level with only 4-5-6 weeks of practice is kidding themsevles.. It will take time..

G:
No. LB is mostly instinct when it comes to making a tackle. If a good LB is in position, he will “make a path” to the tackle. Of course the kid needs some slack; but he needs a kick in the arse too. MLB is the most aggressive, most intimidating position on any team. If the kid’s getting blocked, he should be punching holes in the wall until he gets a chance to play again and prove his worth.

Poor Jon, still latching onto Matthews Jr for as long as he can..
What did you expect Coach Castillo say, “We are very disapointed in Casey, he’s overmatched and just not ready to be a Starter at this time”..
Ooh and “For the record, we have no back-up plan so we are sticking with him”
Casey will be a good productive player but it will take 1-2 years as most NFL Observors have stated (myself included). If Eagles are All-In for this Season as everyone has stated, then they will need to upgrade this LB Corp for as it’s presently is (Chaney,Matthews,Fokou) will not put the scare into anyone.. Who would opposing OC’s have to game plan for ..no one..
I think the Eagles make a move by the end of the week to bring a Veteran in to man the Middle position and move Matthew’s as a Back-up and in son some Dime packages and a Special Teamer..

I told you the night of the Steelers game, that it wasn’t Matthews.
What do you want, Ray Lewis to pop up and appear?
Matthews has outperformed Fokou and everybody’s darling in Chaney.

Let the kid earn his wings so to speak and stop[ acting like you know it all.
Obviously, there are a few of us that pay attention to detail and see Casey has been solid.
Speak of what you know, or stand to be corrected.
He’s got the Browns game to the most reps and snaps in, let that game conclude first.
Talk about it on Thursday night after the game because “anti-Matthews at MLB people” have no idea what they’re talking about.

Although you won’t rag on your boy Chaney for over-committing and overrunning every other play, or not getting off blocks, or the DTs for getting dominated in front of the LBs, I guess I’d rather hear you go back towhining about Desean’s contract.

Are you guys seriously beating your chest about being right? There has been 2 preseason games. Jesus. Relax. If the Lbs were in position all day, then the steelers wouldnt have jammed the ball down the eagles throats for big gains. Hopefully casey is good, but id rather find out when he takes the job from kirk morrison. That is all.

I just don’t like or see the Eagles stopping anyone with any of the LB’s on this Eagle Roster.. (Chaney,MAtthews,Fokou,Jordan,Clayton,Rolle,Jeantry) is just not a LB Corps that will keep up OC up at night wondering how to game plan agasinst.. Who is a playmaker amongst this bunch..

Courtesy of BLEEDING GREEN NATION — this is what Juan Castillo REALLY said….

“The linebackers will be ready. To win the Super Bowl, remember, it takes 16 weeks, and then really whoever is playing their best during the playoffs. So when you look at it there’s time to develop.”

Good job G-Cobb, in NOT getting the real story and context of what he said.

I hope Matthews works out, but I think he is too small in the middle… I wanna believe he’ll be like Zach Thomas or something like that, but I havent seen any kind of spark out of the kid yet…

Chaney looked good last year so and I hear he is the best looking Lb in camp, so Im confused as to why they wont play him in the middle… Maybe its more about having no other Lb to play SAM where Chaney is than Casey..

Im not sure, but it seems Castillo has a nonchalant attitude over the whole thing and I dont like it…..

I’ll have to find video of Castillo’s conference to make sure that Im getting the correct vibe from him… Reading his words and watching the press conference are 2 different things..

I still don’t understand about the hoopla made over J Chaney..
Yes he played well in those 3-4 games late last year and made a lot of tackles, but many of those were 4-5-6-7 yards down the field after chasing down from behind .. which is great to see about his effort, but to say he is a stud LB is just not accurate in my book and should be reserved for Pro-Bowl types (Willis,Beason,Vilma,Urlacher,Briggs, etc, etc, who are real studs)
I go back to the last few seasons and a big misconception that many Eagle fans always seem to have or make whether it was about S Bradley, J Mays, W Witherspoon, J Chaney is the fact that the Eagles LB Corps has been so pedestrian, so average over the years then whenever anyone has a couple of games and makes a few plays, fans are ready to annoit this new player as a Stud and a legitimate LB and it’s simply not the case.. The years of the Eagles not placing a high value on the LB Position has more than caught up with then and saying they allocated 5-6 Draft picks the last 2 Years ( with 2 4th Rounders, 1 6th and 3 7th Rounders to me is not really committing to an updgrade) The Eagles LB’s have been simply average during the AR regime (besides who he inherired from the R Rhodes era)
I know many fans clamor for th day of having playmakers at the LB spot like the Eagles used to have under Coach Ryan/Rhodes with players like S Joyner, W Thomas,J Trotter but this Position has been neglected for so long under Coach AR that Castillo basically has to work from scratch which may pay-off 2-3 years down the road, but may cost them a legitimate Super Bowl run this Season..

If Paulman says something or someone sucks, they are going to be good or already are. He’s rarely right, and when he is, its usually about something elementary like the grass is green.

Take his comments, and believe the opposite and you will pretty much be a scholar in this sport and any other for that matter.

So i guess James Harrison not being drafted holds no weight right? And he came into the league fast n furious right? He averaged 2 sacks a game during the preseason 2 INTs and scared the crap outta the offense that they didnt even wanna come on the field.. All during the preseason… GIMME A BREAK! You who get caught up with pre season and stats so early need to get a book on reality… Alot of guys get caught up with there own personal analysis and them being right that reality goes out the window… Give this time.. Jon Hart – been liking your input overall and thank you.

I don’t care about opinions and you don’t care about mine.
Unless I say “here is my prediction” I’m sharing facts and unbiased observations.
Wish I had the coaches game film, but I am limited to what you see as well.
But, from what I have seen in practice, drills, and preseason games, attacking Matthews nor anyone else at this point is premature.

Negadelphia is correct, we still have a record of 0-0.
We’re tied with the Packers, Patriots, Broncos, Browns, etc.
Go figure that we actually hit on some draft picks that have a hand in winning.
Guess you want the mediocrity to continue, how about trust the front office and staff that keeps us competitive every year.
We were a playoff team last year, and look what we did this offseason.
Basically, I’m saying your negativity (if that is your persona on this site) doesn’t mean shit.
Brotherly love my ass, and it’s too bad some of you don’t let the play speak for itself.
And when it is there to evaluate, how about you critique the right individuals as opposed to following a trend.

It’s like some of you are saying “Oh G. Cobb doesn’t like this player, I’m going to hop on the bandwagon and rag on him because he can’t be good, he was a 4th round pick.”

Well damn, no wonder most of you didn’t keep an athletic career going and/or you’re not involved in how a team operates.
You appear to be die hard fans because you have a lot to say, but the substance is lower than Mike Florio’s sniper/feeble comments on PFT.

I could care less if you respond, I just wish if you’re one of those peeps here, that you get a brain and chill out a little bit.
If you need help chilling out come out to San Diego and I’ll show you how it’s done out here, because this site is going down the drain with your modern WWE comments, watered down!

I rarely say any player sucks.. I just think way too many of you are way to quick to jump on a players bandwagon for it fills a particular need or that the typical “homer” comes out and since you wish he’s good, you are more inclined to think he’s good… I will bet you a $100 right now Jon Hart that neither player (Chaney or Matthews) ever makes the Pro-Bowl in their Careers.. does this mean they suck, of course not, I just think they are young inexeperienced players who will improve with time, but will never rise to the level of a Pro-Bowler or a stud player.. I wish they would, but I try to be realistic when judging, evaluating players and can see their limitations, their lack of size and pure strength at the point of contact to ever become Pro-Bowlers in both of these players cases at this stage of their development.. Will they improve, sure, will they become studs, very doubtful..

paulman –
In order to be realistic, you have to sit and watch before you can formulate an opinion.
This LB core has played 0 games that count on our record.
Week one, you and everyone else have the right to officially hate.
You are not realistic, you are simply mistaken with premature statements that make you look foolish among your Eagles peers.

And this is coming from someone that used to like what you had to say.
No one here is saying so and so will be a hall of fame player.
think about this: a LB core sanwiched between a good d-line and a good secondary only has to do so much.
what you and some others are asking for is pat willis.
if that turns out to be then great, we’re all happy.
but if they do enough in their respective roles to get us a ring, we all will take it.

that’s all i’m saying is, i’m not gonna say you suck or you’re amazing based on preseason and training camp.
get familiar with teammates, new atmosphere, playbook, NFL life
this are where the best of the best in the country play.
enjoy the game you love and the team you follow.
let you opinions develop rather than jump to conclusions, because a ring is all that matters to us and a team, individual accolades are cherries on top.

To JH,
Let’s not equate an undrafted James Harrison with the Steelers with anyone that’s on the Eagles..You are talking about one of the best teams with a great tradition at LB over the last 30-40 Years and have turned out Pro-Bowler after Pro-Bowler year after year which is what their defense is built around.. You could almost stick in any LB (Cgcong/MAtt McCoy) and he would play well for that’s they way they scheme whee their big front 3 DL tie up blockers and let the LB run free to the ball which is how the 3-4 is designed to be.. It’s like being a WR for the Indy Cotls under Peyton Manning during his prime.. All of them have become all-stars and household names.. (Harrison,R Wayne, B Stokley, D Clark, A Gonzales,P Ggarcon,A Collie and on and on and on .. I could probably catch 40 Passes for 500 yards in that offense just like in the Eagles pass-happy offense, WR’s are going to put up good #’s as are QB in the Eagles system for that’s what they are best at… but LB in the Eagles scheme of things is not ever going to be top shelf, high priority poisition.. maybe Castillo will change that (and I hope it does) but going by recent performance over the last 10 years, I don’t expect it to.
The Eagles Defense has invested in recent memory about the DE/CB/DL postions while everything else was an after thought.. If you took out B Dakwins out of the mix, who else was a top Safety during the AR/JJ era..They’ve spent some high Draft picks and missed on quite a few too
(Barksdale ,S Considine,Q Demps, M Harris to name a few)
Some teams have specialties of postions where they have great talent, great coaching which are great fits for the typs of schemes they run… The Eagles have probably had their fair share of success at QB/Scat Backs/OT/TE and DE & CB’s over the Coach AR era and mixed results almost everywhere else..

JH I am only critical of these players because of boneheads like you who tend to over-rate, over-hype them to begin with, before you ever get to see them play… And if you state that line (I trust CoacH AR and the Coaches one more time, I mean C’mon, What have they Won…) So it’s alwways a 2-way street on what you read and hear about any players, and I will always go by what my eyes see and right now on both Chaney/Matthews and the others /Rolle/Fokou/Jordan/Jeantry playing LB for the Eagles are a young, inexperienced LB group trying to find their way… I can recognize top talent when I see it JH and the LB position is such an instinctive position that you either have it or you don’t and after watching so many average Eagle LB play over the years, maybe I have forgotten what it is for teh Eagles to have an actual good LB but Matthews/Chaney don’t impress me at all at this stage .. I did think that Chaney has potential playing on the inside and was impressive at times lst year, I really don’t like him on the outside for he’s hitting the wrong gaps too often and not keepint the outside containment as good as he should from what I’ve seen, he was much better in the middle in my opinion. Anyways, it’s only preseason but I think after Thursday’s game with the up and coming Browns, we will have a better feel on where this Defense and team is at as a whole and to be completetly honest with you, they have a lot of work to do up and down this team. I’ve seen a lot of improvements from teams I’ve been watching around the NFL so far in Pre-season and the Eagles haven’t been one of them

Becase they played a better all-around team in the GB Packers whose QB was on fire for the last month of the Season and Steelers RB mendenhall fumbled the ball killing a scoring drive and switching the momentum back to the PAckers after climbing back intothe game..
LB’s are paid to make the tackles, not the Safeies, notthe DT’s… If the LB’s are not the top Tacklers on your Defense, then you are not running the best defense for the talent you have or maybe you just don’t have the talent at the LB position to begin with which I think for the Eagles it’s a little bit of both..

For all you guys hollering negadelphia..and “give Matthews a chance”…you should start understanding the Philly fans are usually correct on guys after seeing them play in a short window.

Remember Matt Mccoy? 3rd rounder – Reid said he would be fine.
We said he was a bum after watching him for a few games. He was a bum.

We said the same about considine – They said he was drafted to take Dawk spot down the line..After watching him for a few games?
We knew he was a Bum.

We watched Mcdougal for a few games…and said immediately.
This guys a bum.

While everyone said we should give Kolb time…Eagles fans seen he wasn’t nothing special…The Eagles Brass made him the top guy without an open competition…. He’s gone

We overlooked Jason Pierre-Paul and traded up to get Graham who couldn’t outplay and aging Parker, even when the job was given to him day one…

BUM

I can go on and on…but the facts remain, the Eagles fans are rarely wrong when see “BUM” written all over a guy early.

If so, I need anyone here to name one player we wrong about early and that guy blossomed into a serious player anywhere near pro bowl caliber.

On the other hand…there’s players we knew were ballers instantly after watching them for a short span.

When we first seen Trotter drafted 3rd round…He was all over the place making tackles in preseason.

When we drafted Corey Simon…He was all in the backfield disrupting during preseason.

When Chaney got an opportunity we we immediately knew he was a baller and he was in a short time, what Stew never blossomed into (And the only Reason no one clamored about Stew walking is because we thought Chaney was our middle linebacker).

To wrap it up…..

It don’t take a long time to know a baller.

I went on record last offseaon while all you guys were backing Kolb and said, he was a bum with a 2 game leash and will not be in Eagles green next season.

It’s not that I’m some great Seer…..We know when players just dont have it..and when they do.

Allen at Safety- Don’t have “IT” – Jarred – Do have “IT”

Matthews Don’t have “IT” – Chaney Do have “IT”

Justice Never had “IT” – Herremans Have “IT”

Graham Don’t Have “IT” – Hunt – Have “IT”
(And it will be a shame to let Hunt go only to have him become a player some other place..and we’ll be scratching our heads when Graham’s cut wishing we kept Hunt on his low salary).

The Bums I mentioned are gone,,,and you can put your money on all the Bums Eagles fans are pessimistic about will soon be gone also.

We’re not Negadelphia!

We know when a player and philosophy is flawed.

You can not put an undersized linebacker with “0” grit in the middle of a soft defense and expect results.

We are still soft up the middle..Matthews and Allen makes us very vanilla and these guys don’t scare anyone.

That’s the truth.

Wmonell, yeah man we gotta keep it real on here. I love my eagles too and its been that way for years so when you have a guy like paul who lead the charge of negadelphia and tries to cast doubt on everything including the QB position ugh they gotta be exposed. Like Birdo said he must love the attention, but what paul did say was that he enjoys going against us when we say someone is good on the team or if we feel they have potential, which is the stupidest thing i ever heard on here… Dont let what we say effect how you really feel paul.. after he said that how can anyone on here have respect for what he says?…. yeah and i do remember him saying how bad the phils will be and how cole hamels wasnt elite and was only avg, hahaha this guy has lost his entire mind, this must be a hobby for him idk but when he talks foolishness like he has been it gotta be exposed bottom line…

This nitwit Castillo, said he’ll have the LB’s ready for the second half of the year, to win a Super bowl. What about the first half idiot! You need those 8 games too, dope! I don’t like this guy already. I can see being enthusiastic & positive, but this guy is out of his mind & border lined delusional. THE LB’s ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH JUAN!!! WE CAN ALL SEE IT!!! You added an undersized rookie, who never played Mike, to the bad LB’s you already had from last year. Also the only bright spot you had there from last year in Chaney, you moved to the outside. How is this group of LB’s any better or different?

BTW JHart, your correct, Matthews is 245lb’s now! He weighed in at 231lb’s at the combine. But he is small at just under 6′ 1″. He has never played Mike before. He should be on the outside as a back up right now. Just another example of Reid & his cronies forcing a round peg in a square hole again & again & again. It’s like freaking ground hog day with these guys. They are just the football God’s & we don’t know what we are talking about. *Sarcasm*

Double D – Um, I actually agree that Castillo sounds pretty stupid and I’m concerned about that. But your comment her is ignorant. DD – “What about the first half you idiot?” Well, you idiot, this was a incredibly unique/shortened/f’d up offseason for every team in the league and EVERYONE ELSE REALIZES THAT. YOU? You idiot? Nope you’re discounting that. The Eagles LB corp is CLEARLY the weakest part of the team – Castillo knows it, Reid knows it, you and I know it, the media, the fans, Fokou, Mathews and Cheny know it! But to say he’s an idiot for ignoring the first half of this is ignorant. Juan is specifically admitting that the LBs may not play well/come together as an effective unit till the second half of the season. It’s the NFL and real life buddy, sometimes you have to suck it up and be realistic. Juan realizes that the Eagles have a good chance of making the playoffs despite their weaknesses – if you disagree with that you’re dumb. Period. So then, maybe, assuming the make the playoffs, just maybe the time between now and the second half of the season will serve like OTAs/minicamps etc… and they will be better, hey maybe still not that good, but significantly better than now. Why can’t you get that? How is the Indy QB situation right now? Giants secondary? The skins at QB/OL HA? Seriously, you think every team in the league is in week 15 form right now? That’s foolish

The reason i like chaney is it was only his rookie year last year and made a ton of tackes .. his motor never stops .. he was 242 lbs last year and has gained some muscle he may be 250..and runs a 4.4 40.. and has the mentality of a dominent linebacker
