Will The Eagles Strengths Overcome Their Weaknesses?

The Philadelphia Eagles are amongst the most talented teams in the league at a number of positions and they’re also very csuspect at others. Can this football team’s strength make up for their weaknesses? The Birds season will come down to how that question is answered when the 2011 campaign ends.

On the offensive side of the ball, we’ve talked ad nauseum about the weaknesses and question marks on the Birds offensive line. They are many and they are glaring. Inexperience, inconsistency and inability on the offensive line will have to be overcome by the skill positions players on the offensive side of the ball.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles linebackers and safeties are the obvious weaknesses. The defensive line and cornerbacks are their strengths. The linebackers are young, small and lack much of an NFL resume. The safeties are also young, inexperienced and they don’t have big time catch up speed.

One of the defensive challenges will be how well the Birds can defend the run, when big physical teams try to play a ball control style to keep the Eagles explosive offense off the field and wear down the team’s smallish defense. In the passing game, offenses will try to get the safeties isolated in man-to-man coverage on wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.

On special teams, the Birds will be relying on a rookie kicker and a rookie punter. They both have strong legs, but they’re never kicked in the winter weather in the NFC East with the playoffs on the line.

Back to the offense, another key to the season will be how the skill position players perform while the offensive linemen are getting familiar with their positions and their responsibilities. Michael Vick must be able to deal with occasional free pass rushers, by throwing the ball away, getting it to a shallow receiver or taking off on a scramble.

They have a Pro Bowl level quarterback in Vick. From an athletic ability standpoint, there’s not another quarterback in the league who can match him, but the Vick is going to have be great in his recognition of blitzes and his decision-making. We saw what he can do last year, if given the time and targets. He must stay away from turnovers even if the line is struggling.

The quarterback will be throwing the ball to three Pro Bowl level wide receivers. DeSean Jackson, who has made the Pro Bowl twice is the deep guy and Steve Smith, who has made it once, will be a key part of the attack. Jeremy Maclin, who is as talented as they come, is going into his third season and I think Pro Bowls are in his future.

These guys must come up with big plays every time they get the chance because there’s no tell how many chances they’re going to get if Vick is running for his life too much.

Brent Celek is an excellent tight end and he will be asked to again give up pass catching opportunities in order to help the offensive line and their pass blocking. He must make the best of what opportunities he does get.

The Birds have an excellent group of running backs led by LeSean McCoy , Ronnie Brown and fullback Owen Schmitt. They will play a big role in pass blocking. Many times they will be chip blocking before going out on routes and helping out on free pass rushers when an offensive lineman is beaten.

On defense, the Birds have two Pro Bowl defensive ends, Trent Cole and Jason Babin, and an excellence pass rushing defensive tackle in Cullens Jenkins. They’ll need to be dominant.

Defensive tackle Antonio Dixon is a solid run stopper and so is fellow defensive tackle Mike Patterson. They will be tested quite a bit because I expect teams to attack the run defense rather than throw the ball at those corners.

The defensive lineman must create mayhem in the opposing offense’s backfield in order to help the Eagles linebackers in their pursuit of the ball while defending the run. Versus the passing game, if the defensive line puts pressure on the quarterback they will make it nearly impossible for a passer to successfully execute. The better the big boys play upfront, the easier the linebackers’ job will be in plugging the holes.

Of course you know about the three Pro Bowl cornerbacks, Asante Samuel, Nmandi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The will likely be asked to play a great deal of man-to-man in order to keep the safeties out of the one-on-one situations. The ability of these quality cornerbacks to shut down the top wide receivers in the league will make the safeties’ jobs much easier.

If the Birds have any trouble with their run defense, Juan Castillo will walk up one of the safeties and ask his cornerbacks to handle the wide receivers with little if any help.

In the special teams area, the Eagles don’t want to put Alex Henery and his holder, punter Chaz Henry in positions where they have to execute long kicks to win games. The explosive offensive skill people, along with the defensive line and cornerbacks need to make some big plays so that their games aren’t close and don’t go down to the wire.

So there you have it. Will the strengths of this team be able to cover for its weaknesses? We will all find out very soon.

Will the media cease to ask redundant rhetorical questions that only serve to stir up fan negativity and hysteria?

thanks “g” for asking the tough questions and being objective.

Right now I would say..the strengths can cover the weaknesses against weak teams..but will bite us in the playoffs.

The Eagles have more Strength’s then Weakness’s…
The Key for a succesful Season are the Following
Offensively
#1) Protection for QB Vick- Running the ball will help more, quicker passes
#2) Protect the Ball and limit Turnovers – No brainer for every team
#3) Eliminate the silly penalties – Eagles have to improve in this area
#4) Stay Healthy- Vick,Peters,Herreman’s,Celek all need to stay healthy

Defensively
#1) Sure up the Middle of the Defense from Dt,MLB to the Safeties (Teams will attack this Eagles D between the Tackles and the EAgles must stuff it)
#2) LB’s must improve in Covering TE/RB’s out of the backfield and tackle better in space.. (Teams will be throwing a lot of short passes/check downs against the Eagles since the CB’s should shut off many deep/outside routes
#3) Create Turnovers (CB’s probably won’t be picked on a lot, but teams will have to throw their way occasionally, and when they do, take advantage
#4) Eliminate the silly Penalties (especially on 3rd Down in which you help the other team sustain drives)
#5) Stay away from major injuries (T Cole, C Jenkins,A Dixon,Asmo,Coleman)

Special Teams
Just be consistent and smart, Protect the ball, Tackle/Swarm to the ball and eliminate penalties on the return game (blocking in the back, etc) and let the young Kickers/Punter do their thing, they both have strong legs and could be very good players for years to come if they can get off to a good start..

Offensive Strengths (QB,RB,WR,LT)
Questionable (Interior of OL and TE)

Defensive Strengths (DL,CB, Pressure on the Passer and playmakers)
Questionable (the young and size of the LB’s, standing up to Power Rushing teams, the young safeties development)

i kinda feel as the season moves along , the OL ,LB and safety position should get stronger with game action and experience. perenally a 2nd half weakness has been the DL , and i am a little concerned about that again. my other concern would be the kickers , mainly down the stretch when the pressure is on ! not that akers did much better when the pressure got to him.

I think “ad nauseum” is it. Let’s get the season started and go from there. There’s nothing more to discuss at this point. The horse is truly dead.

For them to overcome their weaknesses on the O-line, the are going to have to consistently run the ball & utilize their good core of Receivers, with good play calling, not tell DJax to run 30 yd routes every play. But they won’t, because Andy is a stubborn SOB, & refuses to change. He will throw 70% of the game, & Vick will get killed, by week 3. I hope i’m proven wrong, because I want a friggen SB, damn it!

On a positive note, I think the DF has a chance to be studly. Even if the Lb’s suck! I think the safeties will be okay. They have to stay healthy! Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

have all that talent on the d line and at CB will only make the LBs and Safeties. Coleman is going to be a great player in this league. guy never misses tackles and is always in position. Our running game will be strong and we all know the passing game. Lets start showing some confidenc ein our strengths because they drastically outweigh the weaknesses.

If our weaknesses don’t kill us, or substantially hurt us in the early going, our strengths could see us through.

Okay, most of you guys know my rant. It’s all about play-calling. If we call plays that learn to our strengths, it would help greatly.

We tend to do that on defense. We try to force teams to the pass; believing that our pass rush/coverage has the advantage in obvious passing situations. On offense, however, it’s anther story altogether. It seems we force the pass regardless of down, distance, situation, personnel, injury, etc.

Only time will tell.

We’re healthy goin into the seaons and i expect that to really spring board us.Whats good about this football team is all the p-makers on the team….the other guys tend to pick there game up and follow.

KTDawk…good point about Coleman..he did that at OSU and he’s gonna be the next Mike Lewis with better ball skills.

ITS ON…I LOVE GAMEWEEK,BIRDGAME!!BIRDBRAINS.

Lets look at the week match ups for the Rams O….
Jackson vs. our d-line/lb’s
There o-line is solid but im taken our d-line in a street fight anyday.Speed on that turf. Backers need to wrap him and wait for help.

Bradford and there wides vs. 22/23/24….I see alot recievers struggling to get open….the Steelers game was about the best test they got and none of there guys had alotta success…again turf…pressure him and we’re good.

Guys…let’s keep a new poll.

Let’s watch the season to see who goes down with a torn acl or back surgery from other teams.

So, we can bet on which of these guys will be picked up next season by our beloved eagles.

This is actually an untapped nuance we as Eagles fans should follow.

Who will be the next Marlin Jackson, Stacey Andrews or the next Harris we’ve just given a medical settlement to.

We average one each season and I’m beginning to believe Joe (Nickles) have come up with an insurance scheme that give Eagles a kick back with these settlements.

There’s no other reason for signing these players the never help the team on the field.

Is there a reason we sign these injured players “G”?

I have been following the Eagles for decades and can not remember a coach who signed so many seriously injured players.

speaking of weaknesses….

You think we could have used this guy?

The San Francisco 49ers have signed linebacker Tavares Gooden to a one-year deal, giving the team a reliable defender against tight ends.

Former Raven with good cover skills…

This would have allowed Chaney to go back to the middle.

WM, the problem with you is, you think i’m not a fan & hate the Eagles. When did I ever say that? I love the Eagles, always have, & never have been a bandwagon jumper. I love route for my teams win or lose, I’m just not going to be a blind, stepford, loyalist like you & Schill, & i’m going to ever talk down to people, & tell people what to do like you do. You might not agree with people, but you get out of hand & talk to people, like our opinions don’t matter & they are wrong. I have a free mind & know what i’m talking about. I don’t ignore the flaws & the truths to the problems with this team, that never seem to get fixed. Also no one with a brain can say that anyway shape or form is this team elite. Stop exaggerating, you make yourself look foolish!
Hey I get it, i’m a little over the top with the negativity sometimes, but that doesn’t mean i’m wrong about the points I make. So get your $#!T correct.

Songs you dope. There has only been free agency for so long so don’t give me ‘for decades’! And with your little ‘poll’, which it is not, all that will do is put a number to your hate. Your just counting and guessing! That’s like saying “holy shit, I have 2 arms and 10 toes! Am I some sort of freak?! You have to do the work, and not just cherry pick data, and compare them to the rest of the league to have any legit credibility to an excersize like that.
