Eagles Five Turnovers Cost Them A Game To The Bills, 31-24

It was fitting that the Eagles chances to win the football game against the Jets yesterday would be ended by a mental mistake by defensive end Juqua Parker because the Birds lost the football game because of their mistakes.

First the Bills came up to the offensive line and started shifting their skill players to different positions in the backfield. Next up they became stationary and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick started working the snap count. Everybody and their brother knew not to jump offsides.

I was in a sportsbar and after a couple of seconds, everybody in the bar was saying, “they’re not going to snap the ball”. Parker didn’t get the memo and jumped offsides. It was an awful mistake for a guy who has been in the NFL for more than decade. It gave the Bills a first down and ended the game for the Birds.

Michael Vick threw a total of four interceptions today, but they weren’t all simple interceptions. Still four interceptions are far too many turnovers for this football team. As I expected, the Eagles nearly gained 500 yards on the day. They picked up 489 yards but could only get 24 points on the board because of the five turnovers they committed.

Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant had a big day catching the football but he allowed the Bills to pull two balls out of his hands and those turnovers ultimately played a hand in ending the Birds chances of winning the football game. Avant hadn’t fumbled the football since 2009.

What about the mistake at halftime when the Eagles turned down kicking a field goal with eight seconds remaining on the clock? Reid’s football teams have always had problems with time management and it continued today. They were going to take another shot at the end zone, then kick the field goal if they had an incompletion.

Vick did the one thing that they couldn’t afford to do, he let the clock run out. Number 7 dropped into the pocket, looked for an open receiver and continued looking for an open target for too long. The clock ran out and didn’t get the chance to kick the field goal.

This was an awful defeat for the Eagles. They went up and down the field against the Bills defense, but the turnovers killed them today. They knew they had to stay away from turnovers if they wanted to beat the Buffalo Bills but Michael Vick threw four interceptions on the day and Avant’s fumbles, one .

Yes these were some strange turnovers, but the Bills got the ball from the Birds, nonetheless. What a way to lose for the Eagles. They drove up and down the field all game long, but they couldn’t make the plays when they were needed most.

The start of the game was about as bad as it gets for Vick. The first turnover occurred after the Eagles drove the ball into Bills territory, Vick drops into the pocket looks to his right then comes back to the other side. He tries to throw a screen pass to his left, but the ball is tipped and eventually picked off.

On interception number two, Vick is standing in the pocket and getting ready to deliver the football. He’s hit in the back by a pass rusher, which affects the way the ball comes out of his hands. It looks like knuckle ball just floating in the air and saying “somebody please intercept me”.

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt hopeless, and that’s saying something because as an Eagles fan, I haven’t been given a lot of reasons to hope. I’m diehard. Yet, when you hire an offensive line coach to be your Defensive Coordinator on a short offseason to play a DIFFERENT scheme that you don’t have the personnel for, a fan has a reason to loose faith. Not only has Reid shown that he leaves a lot to be desired as a talent evaluator of players, now his coaching hires are bad. He fired a DC who learned under a master and who had paid his dues to hire someone who hadn’t. He signed new talent but let old talent go. He’s overstocked at CB when with what Namdi is making he might have been able to Quentin, Stewart, and possilbly a Nick Barnett. Imagine this team with Babin, Cullen, Patterson, Cole, Bradley, Barnett, Chaney, Samuel, Chromartie, Mikel, and Allen… Sounds good don’t it. The DC plays Namdi out of position anyway. As small as we are at LB you’d think he’d play bump and run the whole game and do a lot of run blitzing. Frustrated…just frustrated. Andy and Juan must go at end of season.

#1 – poor coaching (it starts with Reid and goes across the entire staff)
#2 – poor talent evaluation (drafts & free agency)
#3 – poor ownership (Lurie needs to put his foot down if he cares)

after the season is over….Lurie should get on a jet and fly to GB and throw money at Winston Moss…. either him or Jets D-Coordinator Mike Pettine…. the Eagles need a defensive minded head coach who knows talent… I prefer Moss over Pettine due to experience.

When you stack up all of the ridiculous things Andy Reid has done with this football team over the years, it’s actually nearly impossible to imagine him still being employed. You really do start to wonder if he has some naked pictures of Lurie and Banner together or something. I just can’t imagine how else someone so epicly stupid could still have a job.

The dude made his offensive line coach his defensive coordinator. Not his defensive line coach, mind you … a COORDINATOR. And then he allowed him to use a bunch of high price free agent talent incorrectly in his defensive scheme. Huh?

Naked pictures. That’s all I gotta say.

when we were shuffling the O-line before game one I told you this team would suck!

I’ve actually picked our team to lose all 5 games…but I overestimated the Rams.

the Eagles have not played one complete game all year, so I’m picking the Skins to really drive the nail in the coffin.

Honestly I dont feel bad at all. I look at this as a fresh start that is coming. I know this team has sooo much talent but a tired and played out commander. If we are gonna do it letss do it right, A 4-12 season, a high draft pick, a new coach and GM. I gotta believe this would be a very attractive job to MANY coaches. Cowher, Billick, etc.

Nev, Watkins started at guard. But this team is pitiful. Turnovers, missed tackles, mental errors, still can’t stop the run. They are just playing some bad ball right now. And the most frustrating part about it is the fact that each game we can make the case that we beat ourselves which in turn gives players and coaches an opening to use garbage excuses for why this team is 1-4. Just really bad right now.

Actually I thought that, in the second half, the offensive line was a bit of a bright spot. They protected Vick pretty well and gave him some time to throw the ball, at least.

scorp is right on the money. Almost every one of these losses has been more about what the Eagles have/have not done than what the other team has done. They beat the Rams, gave up a late lead to the Giants, gave up a late lead to the Niners, and just repeatedly shot themselves in the foot against the Bills.

Which is what frustrates me … there is NO DOUBT that this team has enough talent to win games. They’re just playing sloppy, undisciplined football. I can tolerate a team playing their best and getting beat. I simply CANNOT tolerate a team full of slack-asses who stand around staring at the other guy wondering when he’s going to make a play instead of making one himself.

Or wait … is that the Phillies? I can’t remember.

This is the worst defense I have seen since the pre-Vermeil days. No one tackles! Our red zone defense is an opposing team’s paradise. This is what happens when you go with an inexperienced DC, install a new defemsive line concept, and utelize inexperienced, linebackers. Add to the mix an O-line that can’t block. All of these are Reid’s decisions. To sum up, we can’t tackle, we can’t block, and when we get the ball, we don’t hold on to it. Is there any wonder why we are 1 and 4?

A couple of things that are obvious

#1) Vick can not Win games by himself anymore, but he can sure lose them with poor QB Play.
#2) The Eagles Def/Line (Without Cole and Dixon) is very weak.
#3) The Eagles LB’s Corp are the worst in the NFL (we already knew that)
#4) The Eagles Safety Tandem is one of the Weakest in the NFL
#5) The Eagles TE’s Tandem is one of the Weakest in the NFL (Every game I watch, I see other Teams TE’s making plays but never on the Eagles)
#6) The EAgles WR Corps are good, but overrated and it’s very obvious that the lack of OTA’s and shortened Summer Camp and add D-Jax’s holdout with Maclin’s Illness has negatively effected this group..Way too many drops every game, Poor Ball Security and are just not on the same page consistently with QB Vick as last year.. maybe that lack of practice has caught up to these “Young Guns”

Talk about fundamentals, tackling and blocking and shedding blocks and this team is a very poor tackling team for improper head position, poor angles, not wrapping up, etc,etc.. I’ve seen High School and COllege teams more disciplines with the basic art form of tackling then this Eagle Defense
Eagles cannot shed blocks.. Watch footage of Chaney,Matthews, Rolle being blocked for 4-6-8-10 yards downfield before they can shed a blocker..
This is the NFL and if you can RB’s another 2-3 seconds to get thru a hole and follow blocks and run to open space, it’s all over.. This LB Group is just flat out horrible .
That sequence before the half was comical, All 3 Pass plays were designed 25-30 Yards routes which take longer to develop. Vick on 2nd Down poorly underthrows D-Jax down the right sideline and then on 3rd Own holds the ball to damn long allowing the time to run out..
Many of us have stated and I am damn tired of talking and posting about that we knew this Defense was going to struggle the first 4-6 games due to many factors (inexperienced DC, newSchemes, new players, young inexperienced LBs…) So knowing this, why would an experienced HC and experienced OC MM devise game plans to shorten the games, to minimize the exposure of the Defense until they can get their act and up to speed.. Why not run the ball, throw more shorter safe passes, sustain some drives, eat some clock and help the Defense out by keeping them off the field more.. But Coach Ar and MM only know one way to play, and that’s pass pass pass and wide open and balls to the wall 30-40-50 yards Routes ..
His philosophy is old, predictable and not effective and QB Vick cannot protect the ball like the bigger, stronger D McNabb could back in his prime.. So go ahead and expose Vick and his turnover tendancies even more so with this struggling Eagles Defense and you have a train wreck which is what you can say is happening this Season… I don’t think VIck can drop back 40-50 times a game and not make poor Decisions, it’s his style ,his aggressiveness and risk taking, but by making 3-4-5 turnovers every game, the Eagles won’t win 4-5- which is what they are on target for… and here is the real killer part about todays loss to the Bills.. for as terrible as a start the Eagles missed a golden opportunity to gain on 2 of the NFC Teams that
they will be battling for a potential playoff spot. The Giants, & TB Bucs both lost today to move to 3-2 and the Eagles missed a great opprtunity to move within a game of them.. Now they are in the basement with Panthers,Cardinals,Vikings who are all 1-4 .. It’s all over at this point for the Eagles would have to jump over 6-7 Teams to even sniff the Playoffs and that’s not going to happen.. ..

How many more years do we have to go through this before you figure out the problem is and always was Andy Reid? I’m sure he’s a nice guy but who cares? You guys always say you’re the gold standard. You do know that the city of Philadelphia all laugh at you. You do know that? You can try and contain this through your propaganda media of Dave Spadaro and Howard Eskin but the fans knew this all along. We knew it last year when you guys moved up in the draft when we’ve been needing a safety for 4 years and the #1 safety is on the board and you guys go D end. You guys were lucky Desean and Lesean landed on your lap in the 2nd round. Those were 1st round talent players. I’m amazed at the stupidity that comes from Andy Reid. All of this trickery like he’s Bill Belichek. He’s not Bill Belichek and I’ll tell you another thing, we’ve all had it with Andy wearing his damn Green Bay packers championship ring. This guy is a joke. Juan Castillo defensive coordinator… laughable. Marty Moronwhig for offensive coordinator. I think him and Matt Millon combined for 2 wins when he was at Detroit. How many times can he run an end around? This team is a complete mess. Way to not sign Stew Bradley you tight wads. Way to put your faith in a completely untested and overrated Oregon line backer. How did that work out for us? Way to completely ignore the right tackle in the draft this year… I could go on and on… I’m sure this will go nowhere, but you’ll see it in ticket sales and jersey sales… WE ARE OUTRAGED!!! FIRE REID!!!

Shady on pace for 1500 yards on a little over 220 attempts. . Maclin and Jackson on pace for 1300 yards recieving and 90 and 70 catches respectivley. Vick on pace for 4000 yards and damn near 1000 rushing. Its almost comical that this team isnt scoring 40 a game. All this behind a bad offensive line. Just imagine if these guys get good. For the offense its redzone and turnovers. The Eagles may break every offensive record besides points scored this year and win only 4-5 games.

Can you imagine going to Gruden, Cowher, Parcells etc. I have a job opening. Its not the typical 4-5 win team, The perrenial bottom feeders association. This team has Mike Vick, McCoy, Maclin, Jackson, Asomugha, Samuels, DRC, Cole, Babin and Jenkins. Ownership who spends money. A fan base that has a waiting list. Kolb goes down, Vick comes in and plays 4, 5 weeks of great football. He makes the Eagles think they have a good team and are close to winning. He comes back down to earth as a mediocre QB, but it’s too late. The team is sold. They give him the big deal.

Now one play where Kolb gets his bell rung sets back the franchise 5 years.

This isn’t in defense of Kolb, but if they kept wth Kolb, they would have figured out how bad this team is and started to rebuild instead of pay money for free agents this year.

To Dag..
I know what Cowhers,Parcell’s and maybe even Jeff Fisher response would be..
Get rid of VIck first, then talk to me about Coaching your Team
One thing that everyone has to keep in mind is that the Eagles committed
Vick to be the Face of the Franchise for the next 5-6 Years at a $100 Million .. Not eveny coach is going to like Vick’s Stype of QB, there is not many traditional syle of Offense with pocket QB’s Offensive Schemes that actually fit QB Vick’s style.. SO it may not be all that easy to find a replacement..
Another think is that if you are looking for a Defensive Minded Coach, this Defense is weak in a lot of positions, The LB’s, Safeties and DT ‘s need an over haul (outside of Cullen Jenkins that is)
The Eagles will hire someone from the Coordinator Level that most people never heard of and not a big name Coach like a Cowher,Gruden, Dungy, etc, etc

Rocko, fyi, Big Jamall Jackson played 1 half of Football last season before suffering his season ending injury Opening game versus the Packers and didn’t play with Vick except for a few plays all of last Year….

interesting and valid point Mugsy..
It doesn’t appear the Kolb would have beenany better either but I do agree that Vick’s out of nowhere performance last Season gave the team, front office and yes even the fans and media a false sense of accomplishment, of championship caliber football by the Eagles when indeed, the team has many weaknesses which we have already discussed (LB’s,Safeties,OL, TE, etc, etc)
The Smartest move in hindsight would have been to havejust kept the Franchise Tag on VIck for this 2011 Season and see how he performs as teh #1 Man and Face od the Franchise, It would have cost $ 6-7 m ore Million to do this for this Season, but by the end of the Season, you caould have determine whether he is worth the long-term deal of $100 Million or not.. Now they have already committed, will proabbly only win 5-6 games sinec there are a lot of other holes to fix, bring in a new D/C and restart and rebuild the Defense again with new terminology, new schemes, etc,etc which means the Defense probably wont be all that good in 2012 which means the window for Vick is half closed in my opinion… (that’s if he evens lasts that long) but signing him to the huge deal will set this Franchise back as naming Juan Castillo as DC was.. and was the results of the last 2 Draft Selections by H Roseman set this team back in missed opportunities..
Anyone notice the Rookie LB Kelvin Shepard get some good shots on VIck today.. This kid has a bright future and would have looked damn good in Green & Silver.. He was the one that tagged Vick on his Int thrown to Barret on ran it back for a TD..

I’m still perplexed at this teams off season agenda going into 2011. They pin their fortunes to a 30 yr old, tiny, fragile QB that likes to run based on a 5 or 6 game hot streak and do nothing to solidify a known pourous O-line from 2010 other than draft a 27 yr old whos still learning the game, sign a RT with chronic back problems and sign two afterthoughts at guard out of panic having seen the line play in the preseason as alarmingly bad. Then we sign Babin (a year removed from being considered a 1st rd bust), Jenkins (great signing), VY (seriously), R.Brown (Miami didnt even want), S. Smith (?) and Nnamdi, when we had just traded our other QB of the future for a DRC (pro-bowler) and already had Samuel. We shed Mikell and Bradley, who admittedly werent great, but would be Nitschke and Lott compared to what we have. Then knowing there is little or no pre-season, put a OL coach as DC and try to install new schemes on defense and O-line. Not to mention the last two drafts of “reaches”, who didn’t even begin to address positions of need. When you say it all together, its almost galactically stupid. It’s one thing to have to “put players in a better position”, but its another when they (players you chose) are in that better postion and lack the ability/size/knowledge/skill to make a play. I love this team, but this is painful to watch.

This entire FO & coaching staff is an abortion, & needs to be $#!t canned right away! Big changes need to made, for this team to truly ever contend for a SB! Most of us have been saying the obvious & inevitable for months, even years now, but nothing ever changes. They have long yardage plays, then make way, way too many turn overs, & are horrid in the red zone. It doesn’t help when the play calling & O-line protection is a joke! The even more horrifying vision is, if they do wind up losing enough to get a top 5 pick, they’ll still have Rosemilk & square peg in round hole Reid’s, stupid, incompetent @$$e$, still here!

This isnt a Vick problem. It wasnt a McNabb problem in his prime. It wasnt the QBs fault because we cant convert a 3rd and 1. The redzone debacles arent the QBs fault. Your oline has been below average for years and you keep making your QBs throw 40-50 time a game. How can so many educated fans be so blind. Tom Brady wouldnt last 3 weeks on this team with this play calling, this offensive line, no TE, and recievers running 30 yards every other play.

Wheres all the KOLB lovers? He SUCKS. He sucked here and he sucks out there. If there is anything you should be thankful for its that we didnt sign that stiff to a long term deal. Even with the great Fitzgerald he throws for 150 yards and a cloud of dust. If he was still here with our play calling and oline in would be on IR right now or wetting his pants behind center.

I don’t understand why everybody is bashing the QB. Every QB has games where they throw 3 INTS once in a while. Yes I say 3 because no matter what anybody says that last play is all on Avant, that’s a fumble in my book. I guess its was Vick’s fought when Maclin fumbled last week, and Vicks fought that Avant fumbled TWICE at the end of the games. I saw the QB make plays with his feet and arm to bring the team back. They have to give the QB a chance to bring his team back at the end without somebody making a bonehead mistake. Even the game when Vick got knocked out the game and Kafka was bringin the team back Maclin drops the ball on 4th down. Not to mention the 12 year vet Parker jumping offsides. I’m use to seeing mcnabb choke while attempting to bring his team back, now its everybody around the QB. Good teams find a way to win games like this, but our defense isn’t good enough. I know I’m beating a dead horse but our safeties, and LB’ers suck. Page has to go, he can’t tackle, and is too damn slow.
