My Thoughts Eagles/Bills

I actually considered not even writing this column this week because I have nothing to offer as I’m just a broken record at this point. It’s the same problems that have plagued the Eagles and they just keep getting worse. I’m not trying to be doom and gloom here, but at 1-4 and a team full of holes that aren’t getting fixed, why shouldn’t I say the season is over? Alright, let’s look at the game:

What I liked…

-I liked that the Eagles finally changed their game plan away from something that wasn’t working. Obviously, they can’t win with fourth quarter leads, so let’s try getting in a three-touchdown hole and trying to get out of that. Didn’t work, but hey, they tried.

-A linebacker did something. Jamar Chaney had an interception. Amazing.

-I think Michael Vick is doing the best he can with what he has.

-I’m completely faking this part of the column, everything I saw on Sunday was a complete joke.

…and not so much…

-I just really don’t know what I can say that hasn’t been said a million times by a million different people.

-Five turnovers? Are you serious? While they weren’t all Vick’s fault, you don’t throw four interceptions in a game and have that all be an accident. Andy likes to throw a lot and this is why Donovan was a great fit for his offense. He didn’t throw many picks despite having to air it out constantly. You get someone who isn’t exactly careful with the ball and this is what you get.

-I’ve been praising LeSean McCoy this season, but his running and cutting abilities are really Reggie Bushing him to death. So I guess he now just refuses to hit holes? The dancing does get him out of a lot of trouble some times, but he has to learn when there is nothing there to just drive it straight forward. You can’t Houdini out of every play. Sometimes it just ain’t happening. This is keeping him from being truly elite. He’s an enormous talent, but needs to fix the east/west issues.

-Anyone else surprised that A. McCoy doesn’t fumble more, and B. defensive coordinators don’t instruct their guys to punch at him more? Seems like he’s begging to have the ball punched out. Then again, they just figure they’ll wait for Jeremy Maclin or Jason Avant to catch a pass and get the ball then.

-Speaking of Avant, I don’t care how many yards you get when you keep handing the other team the ball.

-I’ll mention Juqua Parker here because I have to. But again, nothing for me to add on this. Although, I will see that I’ve seen teams do the hard count in that situation to try to draw someone off, and then decide to hike it as the clock runs down, knowing the defense has relaxed. So that was always a possibility. That said, you don’t jump. C’mon. Even Merrill Reese couldn’t believe it.

-Jarrad Page is an absolute nightmare. I call him “Half Step.” Because he is almost always 1/2 step behind to make a play. He just shouldn’t be out there and I think that’s why we saw some Kurt Coleman late in the game. I can’t believe Page was on the waiver wire that late in the preseason!

-This is one of the worst tackling defenses I’ve seen in a long time and I don’t think it’s coaching. I think these players just aren’t good enough. This is what happens when, year in and year out, you draft undersized guys. Every year at the draft it seems like after the Eagles make a defensive pick, Mel Kiper uses the word “undersized.” I’m looking at a defense with some superstars and a bunch of bums.

-This Wide 9 is great! Now you have two options: Keep the Wide 9 and the nice pass rush that comes with it, but be a train wreck up the middle, or scrap it and turn Jason Babin into what he was the first time he was in Philly. Great options!

-All these new defensive players with an all-new scheme, being implemented by someone who hasn’t coached the defensive side of the ball. Great idea, Andy. This defense is all on you. You’re the one that is terrible at drafting defense (or hasn’t found someone competent to help). You’re the one that promoted Juan Castillo to a job he is completely unqualified for. You are absolutely correct when you say it’s all on your after these terrible losses. It is…All. On. You.

-Anyone notice that DRC isn’t very good and spends a lot of time walking around?

-I think the bad news is that I don’t see any way this defense gets turned around. The offense will probably clean up it’s act and stop the turnovers (although expect short yardage to be a problem as long as Andy Reid is the coach), but I don’t see any way this defense gets fixed unless they sign Mike Singletary from 1985. We can blame coaching all we like, but these guys are just not good enough.

-The sacks I saw were clearly coverage sacks. Without Trent Cole and/or the Wide 9, this front four is the same no-pressure group we’ve had for years. Darryl Tapp is just okay.

I already wrote more than I wanted. Tired of sounding like a broken record and I’m not sure why I’m shocked that this continues. I’m not even upset watching these games because it’s such a circus. I suggested to my buddy Jay during the game yesterday that we add a laugh track to the end of these plays. He thought we should ask if we can have the lockout back. I stopped short of calling the Eagles a doormat team, because they have too much talent on the roster still. But I might use that word next week.

For those that think this is not about coaching take a good look at the 49ers, their 4-1 with the same team as last year and Alex Smith still the starting QB, Alex Smith ! If that doesnt tell the people who come on here and blame Vick or it doesnt tell the front office then nothing will. Theirs gonna be some good coaches out there next year and they better not delay to grab one cause theirs gonna be a few teams making coaching changes next year.

The only thing working well for the Eagles right now is the Phillies losing in the first round.
I hate to say it, but I’m kind of enjoying the spectacular collapse of the Eagles’ season. I think it’s going to take something epic like 8-9 loses in a row with 10-20 point collapses and guys fumbling left and right, and dumb decisions going into the half, and onside kicks before the clock is reset, and poorly designed goal line plays and linebackers that can’t play and rookie kickers missing chip-shots and opposing quarterbacks sneaking for 10 yards, and under-qualified coordinators etc. etc. for Jeff and Joe to finally give Andy the heave-ho.

Actually, we’ve had most of this nonsense for years, the one thing we’ve missed is the 8-9 losses in a row.

So I’m hoping for 8 or 9 losses in a row. I feel a little guilty, but Andy must go.

My question is….If Andy know more than us fans why in the offseason and preseason we’re right and Andy is wrong?

Who didn’t know this linebacking corp would struggle?

Who didn’t know these safeties would struggle?

Who didn’t know our offensive line would have no push in the middle with undersized linemen?

we’re not in a dome with Peyton Manning getting the ball out in 3 seconds.

Andrew P- great point. The 49ers are void of much talent on offense. But they have a solid if not spectacular defense that keeps them in games, creates turnovers to provide a short field and features appopropiate sized players at their given positions. The offense plays to its strengths (running/short passes), avoids its weaknessess and so, the team is 4-1 with an entirely new coaching staff and the same amount of “missed time” from the lockout as any other team. That comes down to coaching.

Could you please add:

Who didn’t know Mike Vick would have turnover problems?

For some reason you guys keep leaving the Qb out of your posts. Ints on 3 of his first 4 drives is no way to start a game on the road.

Yeah it is pretty funny that nobody takes shots at vick like they did with mcnabb.everyone would say mcnabb would choke because he could not win the game in the 4th quarter being down only one score but yet vick has not led the team to any victories in the 4th quarter either yet this year and he has alot more talent on offense then mcnabb did.

Vinnie ..I first I’ll do that when you give Vick credit for the things he does.

Hell , if Kolb was the quarterback of this team with this offensive line,,,,,he would be dead by now..

And that includes any other pocker quarterback.

Vick is probably the only quarterback that can survive in this offense the way it’s currently constructed along with a suspect offensive line.

When Vick can drop back and not be under duress 90% of the time then I’ll blame him for mistakes made.

But until then Vick do get a pass.

Also …it’s not Vick’s fault if sure handed Avant gets the ball ripped out on two big plays that could have resulted in points.

Hats off to the Bills Safeties…I remember when our safeties use to harass and rip balls away instead of running away from plays.

our safeties and linebackers are ass!!!!

I believe Chaney can be respectful under the right coaching after seeing him play down the stretch last season ….we need a defensive coordinator

Chris Mortenson just reported Andy Reid and the front office are talking about bringing in a defensive consultant during the bye week to help Castillo, this means Reid is admitting what every single one of us on here has been saying since day one, making your O-Line coach DC is one of the dumbest moves ever !

Another reason I can’t blame Vick is because Reid’s issues we’re seeing were here while Vick and before Vick was incarcerated.

Reid wasted a very talented franchise quarterback Mcnabb …in his prime and now he’s getting Vick killed.

My Sources tell me its Tim Hauck (former DC of the Titans) who would obviously be familiar with the Wide 9 Technique and as the Coordinator with the Titans would blitz his CB & Safeties alot… Tim Hauck wa also a very good Safety and Secondary Coach before becoming a DC who could help with the young Safeties on the Eagles.. I have been yelling Haucks name fout or about 2 months now…

Guys, I’m think Jeff Fisher. He’s already worked with Washburn, and Has a pretty good Defensive mind. That way the playbook shouldn’t change too much and he would know how to effectively use the players that he is handed. Then they could move Juan to coach 3rd string LBs so he can still learn under a great coach. Then, at the end of the season if it’s time to move Reid out of town Jeff can take over as Head Coach and keep the current staff or mold it as he seem fit. Just my thinking. I think it could work, and this way he could stay away from Vince Young until it’s time to trade or let him walk. What do you guys think. The only problem would be trying to get him here. I also believe that the players would respond well to a guys who’s been around the block in the league, and a guy if not for a short catch at the goal line in the super bowl would have a ring.

When everything goes wrong we put all the blame on reid. Although SOME is his fault because he is the HC after all, he isn’t even half of the problem. He has been running the ball this season like all of us have bitched about for ten years. Andy is not the one out there playing like Vick said. It’s not his fault Vick got injured. It’s not his fault were jumping offsides. It’s not his fault were missing crucial chip shot field goals…. Oh yeah, and it’s not his fault were fumbling and missing tackles. Not every team is gonna be mistake free in a game, but I guarantee you all if you erase just a quarter of the mistakes I’ve listed above then we would have a winning record. You all wanna play the blame game cause he’s fat and the only one to blame. Quit bitchin and saying he doesn’t draft good. He has rebuilt our whole roster the past three years and we won ten games last year.. There’s a reason the eagled are the third most winning franchise the past decade in the reg season. You don’t do that by drafting bad and being a bad coach

We have beat ourselves this season in these past four losses more than teams actually whooping our asses. AR has put our guys in position to win and we keep fuckin it up and making him look bad with all the mistakes THE PLAYERS are making. Juan has even done his job. Once again it’s not his fault they miss tackles and we have weak lbs and safeties. We need to get another Dawkins/ trotter out there to lead that defense.

I was very pro Reid – but that article in Philly.com – basically asked the question – what if you just look at the last 6 years under Reid – how does that change your perspective if you look at his results in just the last 6 years….. then Jim Mora was talking about coaches and issues they have in being in the same organization for more then 10 years (but then look at college coaches).. my perspective is starting to shift towards maybe Reid peaked, maybe he can fight and struggle, but maybe we need new blood……

Be interesting to see how the team responds (but I have been thinking that for 3 weeks and the team keeps coming up with new and amazing ways to crap games away

Micah,
Your article was ok until you got to DRC. He’s a helluva player in a terrible defensive scheme. I actually seen his speed close in on guys and saved a couple of TD’s the last couple of games, he’s just in a terrible defense. I don’t blame Juqua for the loss (though I was pissed when he “jumped the gun”). look, what happen to Juqua was unfortunate and he manned up to it. We were already behind, and with our terrible red zone offense – what difference would it have made even if we got the ball back; Juqua shouldn’t be blamed for this loss because he’d be just another AR & JC scapegoat, and AR is a not so good coach, he got lucky off of playmakers the last 11 years. Yesterday someone on here stated that Brett Favre made andy in Green Bay and that’s the truth. AR lives off of other players success, he hasn’t his own winning rings to show for it.

Lesean Mccoy is also a helluva back. He’s not so much reggie bush as yousay. i’ve watched our o-line stand around after the ball is hiked and that’s it while Mccoy is looking for a hole to run through or some blockers to run behind. That’s why it lookds like he’s running like a chicken with his head cut off because he’s looking for some maulers to run behind and we have a bunch of “panty boyz” on that o-line except for Peters and Herremans. last year when jamal jackson was in the middle he opened big holes for our mccoy, Justice did as well. our boys had continuity and AR destroyed it by letting Mudd run our offense with those small high o-line men.

This is all Reid’s fault for getting those high priced Dbacks and wasting luries money. The FO will probably let him go like the Red sox did Francona; a “mutual parting of ways for both sides”. He needs to go now but our FO doesn’t work that way. they don’t have the balls like Jerry Jones to terminate the problem immediately. Andy has lost any “moje” left in da tank and is a goner.

Avant is reliable and had an off day, he owned up to it and apologized and it is what it is. MV7 has to get better in his decisions and just take the sack. He’ll live for the next series, but he doesn’t need to be consistently throwing picks. granted, the O-line doesn’t give him any help, but that’s still no excuse. Though I’m still rooting for him, if he continues to throw picks and fumbles the ball away, it may be time to sit his a*@ on the bench and put VY in.

Reid has been wasting the talents of our playmakers the last 11 years with nothing to show for it and it’s time for him to go. Take MM and JC with you. FIRE ANDREW REID IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vick has more turnovers because Idiot Boy Andy, refuses to run a BALANCED offense. As they did with McNabb in Minnie last Sunday, just let him MANAGE the game. Hand off to the backs with a strategically thrown pass now and then. Mix it up NOT 100 passes per game. The more Vick passes the more exponentially there will be turnovers. But, Reid’s a genius.

Why hire him as a consultant? Hire him as the DC for crying out loud Reid, you idiot. Man up and admit you made a mistake for once. It will help you get your cred back with the fans…maybe.
