Andy Reid Denies Offering Consultant Position to Eric Mangini

At his weekly Wednesday news conference, Eagles head coach Andy Reid was asked if he had offered former Browns and Jets head coach Eric Mangini a position on the team as a defensive consultant. Reid denied it. He also went on to say that he hasn’t been in contact with anyone in regards to offering them a defensive consultant position.

Sal Pal of ESPN reported that Mangini had been offered the job by the Eagles but turned it down. Mangini currently works for ESPN. I could see them asking him on the air if he was offered the job or not.

As far as I’m concerned, if Reid didn’t offer the job to Mangini, he needs to offer it to somebody. Everybody and their brother can see that something isn’t right on the defensive side of the ball. Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo knew about as much about the “Wide Nine” as I know about knitting scarves.

Reid knows through his years of coaching that it’s foolish to ask somebody to coach something they don’t know. He even admitted on Monday that he has coaches who are learning.

I just passed Castillo in the hallway and he is continuing to believe that he and his players can fight their way through these problems.

I know Andy Reid gave Castillo this job as a way of opening up an opportunity in the future for him to be a head coach, but he really was destroying his career. Castillo had built up a name for himself as an offensive line coach. It took him years to establish himself in that position.

I remember Juan talking about how he didn’t care about that, after he had been promoted to defensive coordinator. It was a bad mistake by Juan and Andy, and they may both lose their jobs because of it.

Reid knows Lurie has his back.

If the fans stop coming to games and attendance is down, then Reid has something to worry about called his JOB.

Money is the only motivation Lurie has.

I know the media cannot always be believed but why would someone report a former coach turning down a job when you can just ask the coach if it’s true. Just doesn’t make any sense on ESPN’s part of they are lying, or on Andy’s part if he’s lying. What exactly has Mangini said? Now what he “reportedly” said but actually said.

atra- i would love for you to explain how “money is the only motivation” for Lurie.

I am aware that this is buisness BUT- the best thing for the birds to do to make more money is for them to win it all. If they did that… just once….. do you know what this city… this fanbase would do??? we would SPEND on shirts, DVD’s….. everything. Id fly home to go to the parade…. everything.

your comment would perhaps make a tiny… little…. smitgen of truth had the eagles NOT just gone out and spend a boat load of cash to bring in the names to win it all. Think man.. think.

Let me ge this straight, you want to bring in a guy who runs a 3-4 D to consult a team thats running a wide 9? This is worse then we thought people, we gotta clean house asap.

AP – isn’t the strength of a 3-4 skilled LB play? Maybe that was the idea.

IMO, the whole story smelled of bs. My thinking is, why would anyone with any real NFL coaching credentials take the job. It’s a shit job offering little in terms of visibility/exposure or chance for more opportunity within the organization, and if things come out rosy on the other end the HC and DC would get the lion’s share of credit for it.

schiller, your right, the strenght of the 3-4 is the skill of the LB play, problem is we dont have any skilled LBs, also keep in mind Reid said they wouldnt scrap the wide 9, theirs no way you can run a 3-4 with a wide 9, none of it makes any sense.

AP – Look, I agree that it’s not certain any of this Mangini stuff happene, but I think you’re being a little closed minded. It is possible that Mangini’s knowledge of NFL defense in general, including an expertise on getting good play out of LBs would be a good addition to this defense even with the differences between a traditional 3-4 and the 4-3 wide9. Just because he coached one thing before, that doesnt’ mean he couldn’t help out.

If he put all his weight and flop his fat ass on A square peg……

Through much force and a serious breaking of wind, the square peg will fit into a small round hole.

This all started at the end of the 2009 Season in my opinion..
Remember the Eagles had their asses handed to them by the Cowboys and then there were multiple Cowboy players (Keith Brookings, D Ware, Spencer, T Newman) were telling reporters that they knew the Eagles Plays just by their formations and McNabb’s pre-snap cadences.. This was the start of the meltdown of Coach AR in my opinion which his coaching record in Big Games up to the point was pretty good, but since then, he has not fared well at all in head to head match-ups with teams with a winning record and now it has snowballed to where his Coaching record at Home is 4-7 since 2010 Season and 5 straight losses at home versus the Vikings,Cowboys, Packers,Giants and now 49ers.. I think the Man is Toast and has lost his marbles and just can’t handle the pressure any longer..
His program was on cruise control for so long and he had his yes men all lined up thoughout the organization (Tom Heckert, Martry Mohrnerwig, David Cullen, JJ, Castillo,Segrest, Shuey,McDermott, Jenkins, Shurmur,,Spags etc, etc, and 1 by 1, they have left to pursue other opportunites, been let go but there is no question that Coach AR has lots of pressure on him and has to make a lot of decision wothout that old comfortable, yes men of the inner circle, now he’s been challenged and he doesn;t have the answers and in some cases, not even a clue on what to do… (about the LB’s and Castillo in particular)

That was the back-to- back games in which the Cowboys manhandled the Eagles .. 1st was final game of the 2009 at home to determine home field advantage and then the following week again versus the Cowboys in the wild-card playoff game which was played in Dallas that I am referring to ..

Dag, it’s guys like us who were trying to avoid this embarrassed quagmire we’re now in by pointing out what was needed, while blasting andy’s stupid decisions.

People called us haters.

Now it full exposure.

The coaching staff is ass…there’s talent here.

I remember before andy came to the Eagles that there was talent on the defensive side but the coaching staff lost the team not setting a premium on the offense. We’re now in the same position in reverse.

We need a good defensive Guru to come in and bring his philosophy and a offensive coordinator that values the run game and know how to build a cold weather team for the playoff stretch.

Andy have our players playing like Women!

Damn Jason Avant called a players only meeting.

Jason Freakin Avant?

Is that the guy who had two balls ripped away in key moments of the game that led to another loss?

Damn…I miss Brian Dawkins

When Jason Avant is the voice of reason, this let us know how far our talent and leadership have fallen.

No one in the Eagles organization would give you a real answer especially Reid.

You have defensive backs who are poor tacklers. How many teams in the NFL have 4 defensive backs that don’t wrap up or pack a punch when they hit. They have a third round draft choice whio is a hitter but he probably can’t cover and learn the system from Juan who is still lear5ning it himself. What a screwed up mess for a head coach with 13 years in the league. Many opposing receivers have gotten big YAC against us while Macklin and Jackson are thrown down like ragdolls.

There’s never a pocket for Vick to step into because this bum Kelce can’t hold his ground…and the Redskins runningbacks will rack it up.

My fantasy runningback is usually on the team against the Eagles..I want choose Mccoy but we know what Reid thinks about using a runningback properly…So

This Sunday game will be the nail in the coffin.

I can’t imagine what thos runningbacks on the Skins are going to do against our weak ass linebackers.

Combo of Torrain, Hightower and Helo will rush for 220 YArds versus the EAgles Front 7.. They have no chance without Cole nad Dixon along the DL which puts even more pressue versus the LB’s… I would play with 5 2-4 Scheme and play 5 DL with Fokou and Chaney as LB.’s. Have Safety Coleman down in the box (Almost as a MLB) and have Asmo/Samuel play man to man with DCR as a deep Safety to prevent the Deep play.. Id Grossman completes lots os passes to his WR, than this Eagle Secondary isn’t worth it’s weight.. The Redksins will run the ball 45 times and have Grossman attempt 15-20 passes mostly on play-action and mostly to his TE C Cooley and F Davis and bubble screens/slants and wheelhouse routes to Samuels side It’s funny that I tend to say every week the same thing on how teams are goign to attack this Eagle Defense and nothing seems to have changed.. This has been the receipe on how to attack the Eagles front 7 since Game II of the Preseason and teams are going to keep doing it until the Eagles can show that they can stop it… My $$ is on the other 11 Teams Offensive Coordinators the Eagles will face the rest of this Season

How in the hell do you hire a position coach then tell the defensive coordinator he must fit his scheme based on the position coach’s alignment?

Now, it’s clear why Andy had to hire Juan Castillo.

No other defensive coordinator would have been forced to go with the wide 9.

You need exceptional strong linebackers to execute the wide 9.

Teams are now using 3-4 schemes because most colleges run it now and it’s a smoother transition drafting linebackers from the same scheme which gives rookies an easier transition to the Pros.

If Andy would have hired a defensive coordinator with a pedigree there’s no way a scheme could have been forced on the defensive coach.

They probably went to Mangini “TO CONSULT” and he refused to avoid career suicide stepping on a sinking ship.

Here it is Juan is asking to do more than a regular coordinator would by trying to combine 3 seperate schemes to make every one happy, and you wonder why the players look confused?

Let’s run a 4-3 with a wide 9 alignment, in a cover 2.

But, we’ll still use Jimmy Johnson’s blitz scheme sometimes.

What the hell?

This is Andy’s doing out smarting the rest of us earthlings.

Juan is a hard worker and a good guy who should have never been placed in this difficult position.

Qualifications?

Juan use to sit down with JJ discussing defensive line attacks so he could prepare the offensive line against opposing defensive lines.

What?

This loser used past lunchtime conversations as a reference knowing JJ have passed away and can not confirm or vauch for such a move.

JJ probably would have said HELL NO!

You need serious apprenticeship to step in those shoes..and the apprentice was thrown under the bus after Reid depleted his secondary by letting Dawk and Sheldon Brown walk in consecutive years.

Andy got his last comrad Juan Castillo a job before the ax.

great…mission accomplished..

Now Lurie?

Former Browns head coach Eric Mangini turned down a consultant role with the Eagles according to ESPN.

Mangini, now employed by ESPN, was a successful defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick with the Patriots before he became head coach of the Jets and last served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

The Eagles denied on Tuesday that they were looking for defensive consultants to be a sounding board for first-year coordinator Juan Castillo. Castillo’s defense ranks 27th in the NFL. He replaced Sean McDermott, who was let go after two years in that role. Castillo had previously been the Eagles’ offensive line coach for 12 seasons.

With the Eagles struggling to stop the run, coach Andy Reid said that the four straight losses wouldn’t lead him to fire Castillo. He also said the team didn’t plan to scrap the defensive line alignment known as the “wide-9” which sets the defensive ends well outside the opposing offensive tackle.

That has led to 16 sacks for the Eagles in five games, even without top pass rusher Trent Cole. But it also has been problematic for the back seven of the defense, which is struggling to fill run lanes created by the wide splits of the defensive line.

We need to discuss the reason Mangini didn’t want no part of this mess.
